Report: Panthers may not be done adding to front office after Dan Morgan promotion

Monday’s promotion of new GM Dan Morgan may not be the only adjustment the Panthers make atop their front office.

Just because they’ve locked in on their new general manager, it doesn’t mean the Carolina Panthers are done making big moves behind the scenes.

On Monday, the team announced the promotion of Dan Morgan to the president of football operations and general manager positions. The former Panthers linebacker, who is now also the former Panthers assistant general manager, now takes the reins atop the front office after three years as the No. 2.

But according to CBS lead NFL insider Jonathan Jones, owner David Tepper may be looking to partner Morgan up with a numbers guy. Jones writes:

It’s possible Tepper isn’t done adding to his front office, sources say. Tepper had a healthy mix of GM candidates in this search with football backgrounds or cap/analytics backgrounds. Back in 2021 before hiring Fitterer, Tepper flirted with the idea of splitting the GM position in two: A CFO of football and a COO of football, according to sources.

With Morgan taking the controls as the primary football executive, his secondary football executive position is now vacant in Carolina.

Some, including Joe Person of The Athletic and Albert Breer of Sports Illustrated, have suggested it may be Kansas City Chiefs vice president of football operations Brandt Tilis that is ultimately hired to run the business side.

Tilis was one of eight general manager candidates the Panthers officially announced an interview request for back on Jan. 8. He reportedly interviewed with the organization on Jan. 15.

Jones also noted that Philadelphia Eagles assistant general manager Alec Halaby and New York Giants assistant general manager Brandon Brown were finalists for the job.

Report: Panthers have ‘quietly entered’ 2nd round of GM interviews

Per CBS Sports’ Jonathan Jones, the Panthers have quietly entered their second round of GM interviews.

The Carolina Panthers are keeping their search for a new general manager on the down low.

According to CBS Sports lead NFL insider Jonathan Jones, the organization has “quietly entered” the second round of interviews for the vacancy.

Like their head-coaching hunt, the Panthers officially announced interview requests for their group of candidates back on Jan. 8. But unlike their head-coaching hunt, the team has not provided many updates throughout the process.

Based on numerous reports, the Panthers had interviews set up for at least seven of the 11 known candidates—assistant general manager Dan Morgan, vice president of football administration Samir Suleiman, Baltimore Ravens vice president of football administration Nick Matteo, Indianapolis Colts assistant general manager Ed Dodds, Kansas City Chiefs vice president of football operations Brandt Tilis, Las Vegas Raiders interim general manager Champ Kelly and Philadelphia Eagles assistant general manager Alec Halaby.

Jones also notes that Morgan went into the search as “strong candidate” for the role.

Panthers reportedly interviewing 2 more GM candidates on Monday

Kansas City’s Brandt Tilis and Baltimore’s Nick Matteo are reportedly interviewing for the Panthers’ GM job today.

Two high-ranking individuals from two high-ranking organizations are set to talk to the Carolina Panthers about their general manager position.

According to NFL Network insider Ian Rapoport, the Panthers are interviewing Kansas City Chiefs vice president of football operations Brandt Tilis and Baltimore Ravens vice president of football administration Nick Matteo today. They are two of 11 known candidates for the organization’s front-office opening.

Tilis is currently in his 14th season with the Chiefs. He’s also served as Kansas City’s director of football administration (2017 to 2020), director of salary cap and football operations analytics (2014 to 2016) and as a salary cap/contract analyst (2010 to 2013).

Matteo, another numbers guy, is now in his fourth season for Baltimore. He—per the Ravens’ official site—”oversees all areas of football administration, including day-to-day salary cap management and general roster transactions.”

To this point, the Panthers have also reportedly locked in or conducted interviews with Philadelphia Eagles assistant general manager Alec Halaby, Indianapolis Colts assistant general manager Ed Dodds, Las Vegas Raiders interim general manager Champ Kelly and with two of their own in assistant general manager Dan Morgan and vice president of football administration Samir Suleiman.

Keep it here as we track each candidate throughout the process.

Panthers confirm interview requests for 8 GM candidates

The Panthers confirmed interview requests for eight GM candidates on Monday.

Hmmm . . . it’s almost as if the Carolina Panthers knew they weren’t moving forward with Scott Fitterer.

On Monday, not even 12 hours after announcing his firing, the team confirmed their interview requests for eight general manager candidates.

The list is as follows:

  • New York Giants assistant general manager Brandon Brown
  • Tampa Bay Buccaneers assistant general manager Mike Greenberg
  • Kansas City Chiefs vice president of football operations Brandt Tilis
  • Philadelphia Eagles assistant general manager Alec Halaby
  • New Orleans Saints assistant general manager Khai Harley
  • Baltimore Ravens vice president of football administration Nick Matteo
  • Indianapolis Colts assistant general manager Ed Dodds
  • Las Vegas Raiders interim general manager Champ Kelly

Just as in their head-coaching hunt, where they’ve also confirmed interview requests for nine candidates, the Panthers are not permitted to hold in-person interviews for the position until Jan. 22.

This will be the first time the organization is set to hire both a new general manager and a new head coach in the same offseason since 2002.

Panthers reportedly request interview with Eagles assistant GM Alec Halaby

Per NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport, the Panthers have requested to speak with Eagles assistant GM Alec Halaby.

The Carolina Panthers have gone to work on Black Monday.

After parting ways with general manager Scott Fitterer, the team not only signed 14 players to new deals this afternoon, but they also reportedly started on interview requests.

They began their search for their front office’s new shot-caller with a trio of names. As reported by league insiders Peter Schrager and Tom Pelissero, the feelers have been sent out for Tampa Bay Buccaneers assistant general manager Mike Greenberg, New York Giants assistant general manager Brandon Brown and Kansas City Chiefs vice president of football operations Brandt Tilis.

A fourth name would then emerge, courtesy of NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport. Rapoport tweeted that the Panthers have requested to speak with Philadelphia Eagles assistant general manager Alec Halaby.

Halaby has been with the Eagles for the last 16 seasons. Before being named to his current post in 2022, the Harvard University graduate spent six years as the team’s vice president of football operations and strategy.

His emphasis on analytics, which helped build an NFC championship roster last season, may be valued by Panthers owner David Tepper.

Panthers reportedly request GM interviews with 3 candidates

The Panthers have reportedly begun putting in their requests to interview GM candidates.

We have our first three names in the Carolina Panthers’ 2024 search for a new general manager.

Here’s the trio of initial candidates, as reported on Monday by NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero and FOX Sports’ Peter Schrager:

15 possible candidates to replace former Panthers GM Scott Fitterer

Who’s next in line to lead the Panthers’ front office? Here are 15 candidates that could replace Scott Fitterer.

The Carolina Panthers didn’t wait long to make a move after wrapping up the worst record in the history of a 17-game season.

On Monday, the team announced they have parted ways with general manager Scott Fitterer. The decision puts an end to a bumpy three-year run, one that resulted in an overall 14-37 record.

So, who’s next for owner David Tepper?

Here are 15 possible candidates for Carolina’s new opening:

Panthers request interviews with Chiefs front office executives Ryan Poles, Brandt Tilis

Eric Bieniemy isn’t the only person on the Kansas City Chiefs’ staff getting interviews.

Kansas City Chiefs OC Eric Bieniemy isn’t the only member of the organization getting interview requests.

According to reports from NFL Network insiders Ian Rapoport and Peter Schrager, the Carolina Panthers have requested interviews with two Chiefs front-office executives for their GM vacancy.

Rapoport says the Panthers have requested to interview Assistant Director of Player Personnel Ryan Poles. The former offensive lineman for the Boston College Golden Eagles has climbed the ladder through the Chiefs’ personnel department over the past 111 years, starting off as a Scouting Assistant and working his way up to becoming the College Scouting Coordinator for the team. He eventually earned promotions to the Director of College Scouting and now the position he holds today.

Poles has played a big part in building the Chiefs’ roster through the NFL draft and undrafted free agency over the years, so he’s certainly deserving of the opportunity.

Poles is not the only front office executive that the Panthers have an interest in. According to Schrager, they’ve also requested an interview with Chiefs Director of Football Administration Brandt Tilis for the GM vacancy.

If Tilis sounds familiar that’s because he’s one half of the salary-cap duo along with Chris Shea, that helped orchestrate the incredible work structuring the monster contracts in Kansas City, such as the half-billion-dollar deal with Patrick Mahomes. He’s not so much a personnel evaluator as he is a money-man, so that could be appealing to a team like the Panthers that appears set to give HC Matt Rhule roster control.

These types of things are to be expected when you have a winning team. Thankfully, the Chiefs have a number of in-house candidates who they can promote to help offset the loss if either Poles or Tilis were to be hired for the GM job in Carolina.
