Gimme Him: One player Giants would steal from Eagles

The New York Giants are in need of quality edge rushers, so this all-around talent from the Philadelphia Eagles would be worthy of stealing.

The New York Giants and Philadelphia Eagles will square off for the second time in a four-week span on Sunday afternoon at MetLife Stadium.

It’s a game where Big Blue can potentially spoil the playoff hopes of the Eagles, but would do damage to themselves in the process — further risking their draft positioning and possibly even saving the jobs of general manager Dave Gettleman and head coach Pat Shurmur.

There will be plenty of discussion about that throughout the week, but for now, we’re looking to steal.

In Week 14, we theoretically robbed the Eagles of offensive tackle Lane Johnson, which trims the list of players worthy of stealing off Philly’s roster this time around. But fear not, there is someone we have our eye on.

With the Giants likely out of the Chase Young hunt, they remain in need of quality edge rushers to go along with Markus Golden, assuming they opt to keep him in 2020. As such, that’s our area of focus when going over the Eagles’ roster.

And wouldn’t you know it, they have a quality edge rusher currently playing defensive end in their 4-3 — Brandon Graham.

In 15 games this season, the 31-year-old Graham has recorded 47 tackles, nine stuffs, one forced fumble and 7.5 sacks to go along with his Pro Football Focus grade of 84.3.

We know some will look at Graham’s career statistics and wonder if he’s truly worthy of stealing and if he’d make that much difference, but he’s consistently productive as a rotational defensive lineman and largely has been throughout his career. He’s also solid against the run, which gives him the leg up over someone like Golden, who struggles a bit in that area.

Graham may not be the flashy big-name player we usually steal in these segments, but he’s a quality all-around talent that would immediately help the Giants at an area of need.

What say you, Giants fans? Would you steal Graham this time around or someone else (someone other than Lane Johnson)?

Eagles practice in full pads as Doug Pederson challenges his leaders to step up

Eagles practice in full pads as Doug Pederson challenges his leaders to step up

Doug Pederson is viewed around the NFL as a player’s coach, whose biggest asset is the ability to get his guys to respond when it counts the most. Pederson got the Eagles to respond when Carson Wentz tore his ACL in 2017.

Last season when it looked like all was lost, the Eagles started a playoff run in early December that lasted until a heartbreaking divisional playoff loss to the New Orleans Saints.

Now with the Eagles sitting at 5-7 on the season, Pederson is challenging his team once again according to Tim McManus of ESPN.com.

McManus reports that the Eagles held a full-padded practice, after being verbally challenged by Pederson to have his leaders “step up” and right the ship.

Star right guard Brandon Brooks addressed the full padded practice and called it a tone-setting practice on Thursday in advance of the Giants.

Eagles land on ESPN’s list of most improved defenses

Philadelphia Eagles land on ESPN’s list of most improved defenses

The Philadelphia Eagles defense was criticized and battered during the first of the NFL season, but over the past four weeks, the Birds have gotten healthy and seemed to have found their rhythm.

With Jalen Mills and Ronald Darby healthy, the Eagles defense is among the best in the NFL over the past three weeks. According to ESPN.com, the Birds meteoric improvements as a defense have landed them on a list of the most improved defensive units.

8. Philadelphia Eagles
2019: -7.2% (6)
2018: 0.0% (15)
Gain: -7.2%

It’s a modest improvement, but the Eagles have gone from a 6.7% pass defense DVOA last year (15th) to -0.5% pass defense DVOA this year (12th). They’ve blitzed a bit more than they used to under Jim Schwartz, currently at 27.2% per SportsRadar, as compared to a league-low 16.0% in 2018.

The Birds have improved with the return of Jalen Mills and Ronald Darby to the secondary. Two other additions, Rudy Ford and Pass rusher Genard Avery, have also helped spur on the Eagles’ newfound defensive success.

Tom Brady not over Super Bowl loss, hints at Patriots using their own ‘Special’ play vs. the Eagles

Tom Brady says he’s still not over Super Bowl loss to the Eagles

[jwplayer Q699ryAc]

Tom Brady is preparing for his first duel with Carson Wentz, yet he still can’t get over the sting of New England’s crushing 41-33 loss to Philadelphia in Super Bowl LII.

While a guest on WEEI’s “The Greg Hill Show” in Boston on Monday morning, Brady discussed the ‘mental scar tissue’ that remains from that crushing defeat against the Birds.

“You assume I’m over it? Come on now,” Brady said. “That’s a lot of mental scar tissue from that year. That was a tough game.

Brady went on to provide further insight into the lasting hangover he feels from that loss.

“In a lot of ways we learned from that year and we came back stronger the next year. We won the Super Bowl in ’18. I think everything is a matter of perspective and when you play in that game and you play great teams, you’re not going to win them all. This is not the Harlem Globetrotters vs. the Washington Generals. This is all about tough competition against the best teams. They deserved it that year, and now a couple years later we get a chance to play the organization again. We’ve had a lot of changes, they’ve had a lot of changes. It’s totally different circumstances. Huge game for us. Big game for them. The better team is going to win.”

Both teams are coming off bye weeks and the Patriots (8-1), are nearly unbeatable when they’ve had a week to prepare.

While discussing the “Philly Special”, Brady hinted at the Patriots pulling out their own bag of tricks in the rematch.

“Tough play to stop. They executed it well,” Brady told WEEI. “That play will go down in history, just like a lot of those big plays in the Super Bowl have. Good for them.”
