Jets vs. Dolphins Week 15 recap: Everything we know

The Jets had all the momentum in the world. Then they came crashing back to earth against the Dolphins. Recap:

The Jets had all the momentum in the world. Then they came crashing back to earth.

A strong first quarter had Gang Green in solid shape for a Week 15 win, but the team fell apart on both sides of the ball and once again allowed their opponent to put up over 30 points. The Dolphins had no problem coming back on their home turf, winning 31-24 following a second-half collapse by New York.

What looked to be a promising day resulted in the Jets’ 11th loss of the season. The Dolphins, meanwhile, extended their winning streak to six and improved to .500.

4 things to know about new Jets CB Rachad Wildgoose

Get to know new Jets cornerback Rachad Wildgoose.

The Jets secondary has been ravaged by injuries this season. Lamarcus Joyner was lost for the season in Week 1, while Marcus Maye suffered a season-ending torn Achilles injury against the Colts in Week 9.

The unit’s woes worsened against the Bills, as Brandin Echols suffered a quad injury that is expected to keep him out for 3-5 weeks. In an effort to mitigate the loss of the rookie starter, New York signed Rachad Wildgoose to its active roster on Wednesday.

Here are four things to know about the Jets’ newest cornerback.

Jets sign CB Rachad Wildgoose, make 7 other roster moves

The Jets signed CB Rachad Wildgoose and TE Kenny Yeboah on Tuesday, in addition to a handful of other moves.

The Jets made a bevy of roster moves before their Week 11 matchup with the Dolphins.

New York signed TE Kenny Yeboah and CB Rachad Wildgoose to the active roster to bolster the depth at two key positions. The team also signed LB Corey Thompson and WR Keelan Doss to the practice squad. CB Lamar Jackson and DE Jabari Zuniga were protected on the practice squad.

CB Brandin Echols was placed on injured reserve with a quad injury, while LB Noah Dawkins landed on practice squad injured reserve with an undisclosed injury.

Here’s a little bit on the newcomers and New York’s other roster moves.

Brandin Echols out 3-5 weeks with quad injury, Mekhi Becton to miss 1-3 more weeks

Jets rookie cornerback Brandin Echols will miss 3-5 weeks with a quad injury, while Mekhi Becton remains 1-3 weeks away from practicing.

The Jets’ defense took another hit in Week 10.

Rookie cornerback Brandin Echols will miss 3-5 weeks with a quad injury suffered in New York’s 45-17 loss to the Bills, Robert Saleh said Monday. Echols injured his quad in the second quarter and did not return.

Echols’ injury is another blow to an already weak secondary decimated by injuries. The Jets have lost both their starting safeties in Lamarcus Joyner and Marcus Maye to season-ending injuries and will now be down their No. 2 cornerback. Echols was fourth on the team in defensive snaps with 407 and tallied 41 total tackles and four defended passes in nine starts.

Echols’ absence means either undrafted free agent Isaiah Dunn or fifth-round pick Jason Pinnock, who is currently on the COVID-19 list, will need to step in as the Jets’ second cornerback alongside Bryce Hall while Javelin Guidry and Michael Carter II command the slot. Dunn has seen just four defensive snaps this season while Pinnock has only played in two.

Left tackle Mekhi Becton, who suffered a dislocated knee cap in Week 1 and hasn’t played since, is still a few weeks away from returning to practice, according to Saleh.

Mike White among Studs & Duds from Jets’ Week 10 loss to Bills

Mike White and the Jets’ entire defense headline our studs and duds from New York’s embarrassing 38-3 loss to the Bills.

The Jets have played the Bills well — albeit in defeat — recently, but that was not the case on Sunday afternoon. Buffalo marched into MetLife Stadium and dominated New York for all four quarters in a 45-17 win.

Mike White struggled to the tune of multiple interceptions, while the Jets couldn’t stop a nosebleed defensively for the fourth straight game.

Here are the studs and duds — mostly duds — from New York’s embarrassing loss to the Bills.

Ty Johnson, Sheldon Rankins among 5 unsung heroes in Jets’ win over Bengals

Players like Ty Johnson and Sheldon Rankins didn’t necessarily star against the Bengals, but they were among the unsung heroes in Week 8.

The Jets shocked the Bengals in Week 8 with backup quarterback Mike White under center. White had a game for the ages, throwing for over 400 yards and three touchdowns to lead New York to a 34-31 come-from-behind victory.

Players on both sides of the ball shined for New York, though not everyone received equal credit for fending off a Bengals team that traveled to MetLife Stadium fresh off its biggest regular-season win in a long time. Here, we’ll take a look at some unsung heroes who flew under the radar in the Jets’ Week 8 win.

Jets cornerbacks haven’t allowed any passing touchdowns through 4 weeks

New York’s opponents have rarely scored through the air, thanks in large part to the Jets’ young cornerbacks.

Originally viewed as the Jets’ biggest weakness, New York’s young cornerbacks look like one of the best units in the NFL after four weeks.

The Jets have given up just two passing touchdowns this season, best in the league. But their cornerback group is the only one in the NFL that has not been charged with allowing a passing score, per Pro Football Focus. Safety Sheldrick Redwine allowed a long Robby Anderson touchdown in Week 1, while Titans wideout Cameron Batson found himself wide open at the end of regulation in Week 4.

Bryce Hall looks every bit a No. 1 cornerback and the combination of Brandin Echols, Javelin Guidry, Michael Carter II and Isaiah Dunn have shut down opposing offenses. The unit also ranks top-five in yards per cover snap allowed, passing yards per game allowed, yards per target allowed and penalties committed, according to Jets X-Factor’s Michael Nania.

The lack of passing touchdowns is most impressive given the state of the league. Teams have become reliant on scoring through the air and the Jets’ ability to take that away has given them an opportunity to keep games close. It hasn’t always worked out – the team is still 1-3 and has given up 13 field goals — but the losing record can’t be pinned on the corners.

New York’s cornerbacks haven’t encountered their toughest competition yet. A.J. Brown and Julio Jones missed the Week 4 match vs. the Titans, and the Patriots and Broncos aren’t loaded with potent pass-catchers. The Jets prevented Panthers’ receiver D.J. Moore from scoring, but they still gave up six receptions for 80 yards to him.

The next several weeks will determine if this unit’s ability is legit, exaggerated or a product of bad competition. New York plays the Falcons’ Calvin Ridley, Kyle Pitts and Cordarrelle Patterson in Week 5 and will see the Dolphins and Bills twice, as well as Tom Brady and his arsenal of weapons, later this season.

Hall and the cornerbacks have a chance to be special. They just need to stay consistent as the season progresses.

Elijah Moore nearing return with 2 other Jets in concussion protocol

Robert Saleh revealed that Jets WR Elijah Moore is close to coming out of concussion protocol.

Robert Saleh received more good news following his first win as a head coach.

Saleh revealed that WR Elijah Moore is close to coming out of concussion protocol on Monday. The rookie missed New York’s Week 4 victory over the Titans after suffering a concussion in Week 3 against the Broncos.

Moore, the 34th overall pick, came into the season with high expectations. However, the speedy and versatile receiver has yet to make a sizeable impact, catching eight passes for 66 yards. Moore missed the entire preseason due to injury; he was thrown into the fire in his first few NFL games.

While Moore is almost ready to return, CB Brandin Echols and WR Jeff Smith are day-to-day in concussion protocol. Smith suffered his head injury in a car accident last week, while Echols exited the Titans game early on.

Zach Wilson, Corey Davis among Jets’ Studs & Duds in Week 4 win over Titans

Studs & Duds: Zach Wilson, Corey Davis & C.J. Mosley played major roles in the Jets beating the Titans in OT for their first win of 2021.

The first 30 minutes of the Jets’ Week 4 clash with the Titans looked like more of the same. New York’s defense was doing its part, but its offense wasn’t doing anything right.

That all changed in the third quarter, as Zach Wilson heated up to get the Jets to overtime. Jeff Ulbrich’s defense delivered after allowing Tennessee to tie the game in the closing seconds of regulation, forcing Randy Bullock into a missed 49-yard field goal to secure a 27-24 win — Robert Saleh’s first as a head coach.

Wilson threw two touchdown passes in the fourth quarter, with his 53-yard strike to Corey Davis putting the Jets up 24-17. Wilson also led New York down the field in overtime, resulting in a short field goal by Matt Ammendola to go up 27-24.

Here are the studs and duds from the Jets’ thrilling overtime win over the Titans.
