New York’s opponents have rarely scored through the air, thanks in large part to the Jets’ young cornerbacks.
Originally viewed as the Jets’ biggest weakness, New York’s young cornerbacks look like one of the best units in the NFL after four weeks.
The Jets have given up just two passing touchdowns this season, best in the league. But their cornerback group is the only one in the NFL that has not been charged with allowing a passing score, per Pro Football Focus. Safety Sheldrick Redwine allowed a long Robby Anderson touchdown in Week 1, while Titans wideout Cameron Batson found himself wide open at the end of regulation in Week 4.
Bryce Hall looks every bit a No. 1 cornerback and the combination of Brandin Echols, Javelin Guidry, Michael Carter II and Isaiah Dunn have shut down opposing offenses. The unit also ranks top-five in yards per cover snap allowed, passing yards per game allowed, yards per target allowed and penalties committed, according to Jets X-Factor’s Michael Nania.
The lack of passing touchdowns is most impressive given the state of the league. Teams have become reliant on scoring through the air and the Jets’ ability to take that away has given them an opportunity to keep games close. It hasn’t always worked out – the team is still 1-3 and has given up 13 field goals — but the losing record can’t be pinned on the corners.
New York’s cornerbacks haven’t encountered their toughest competition yet. A.J. Brown and Julio Jones missed the Week 4 match vs. the Titans, and the Patriots and Broncos aren’t loaded with potent pass-catchers. The Jets prevented Panthers’ receiver D.J. Moore from scoring, but they still gave up six receptions for 80 yards to him.
The next several weeks will determine if this unit’s ability is legit, exaggerated or a product of bad competition. New York plays the Falcons’ Calvin Ridley, Kyle Pitts and Cordarrelle Patterson in Week 5 and will see the Dolphins and Bills twice, as well as Tom Brady and his arsenal of weapons, later this season.
Hall and the cornerbacks have a chance to be special. They just need to stay consistent as the season progresses.
