Rutgers fails epically in the red zone, punts on fourth-and-goal from the 43

Rutgers opened its season and wound up punting on fourth-and-goal

It isn’t officially college football season until Rutgers pulls, uh, a Rutgers.

Fortunately, the Scarlet Knights didn’t keep people waiting long on Saturday when they opened the season against Boston College.

Add this classic to the Rutgers highlight reel of infamous football moments.

How about the Scarlet Knights found a way to punt on fourth-and-goal? Yes, they had first-and-goal at the BC 10 and wound up with a fourth-and-goal at the BC 43.

Can’t imagine Greg Schiano had his team practice a drive going that far in reverse.

All-American punter Adam Korsak managed to salvage something as his boot pinned the Eagles at their 3.

The debacle:

  • 4th & Goal at BC 43

(4:11 – 1st) Adam Korsak punt for 40 yds, downed at the BC 3

  • 3rd & Goal at BC 38

(6:33 – 1st) Gavin Wimsatt sacked by Jaylen Blackwell for a loss of 5 yards to the BC 43

  • 3rd & Goal at BC 33

(6:33 – 1st) RUTGERS Penalty, False Start (-5 Yards) to the BC 38

  • 2nd & Goal at BC 33

    (6:33 – 1st) Gavin Wimsatt pass incomplete

  • 2nd & Goal at BC 23

(6:33 – 1st) WIMSATT, Gavin pass to the right complete for 8 yards to CRUICKSHANK, Aron caught at the BOS27 and advanced to the BOS15 (WILLIAMS, Jaden). PENALTY RUT Holding on RYAN, Sean enforced 10 yards from the BOS23 to the BOS33 [SG]. NO PLAY (replay the down).

  • 2nd & Goal at BC 8

(6:33 – 1st) WIMSATT, Gavin pass to the left incomplete intended for LANGAN, Johnny thrown to the BOS0. PENALTY RUT Pass Interference on LANGAN, Johnny enforced 15 yards to the BOS23 [SG]. NO PLAY (replay the down).

  • 1st & Goal at BC 10

(6:33 – 1st) Kyle Monangai run for 2 yds to the BC 8

Vintage, Scarlet Knights football.

Rutgers vs. Boston College: Stream, injury report, broadcast info for Saturday

Rutgers takes on Boston College in their season opener. Here’s how to watch, the injury report, and key players for Saturday’s game

The Rutgers Scarlet Knights play the Boston College Eagles on Saturday in the season opener, and if you’re wondering how you can watch the action live, you’ve come to the right place.

This is a northeast battle between former Big East conference mates. Historically, the Eagles have owned The Scarlet Knights. However, Rutgers is 9-4 in season openers under head coach Greg Schiano, including victories the past two years over Michigan State and Temple. The team is 79-64-9 all-time in openers.

Rutgers is going to have a much tougher time getting off to a hot start this season, however, as Boston College is not a cookie-cutter opener you might see to get a team rolling. This is a Power Five school that finished with a record of 6-6 and earned their way into a bowl game outright last season. Despite being in the midst of a rebuild, Rutgers did lose some key players from last season where they finished 5-8. With uncertainty at the quarterback position and a rotation in the back field, Rutgers will look to find some consistency in this one while trying to improve Schiano’s record in Week 1.

Two teams still rebuilding in tough conferences should lead to a lot of trying new things and figuring out what works. But with both teams having strong conference schedules, it will be a fight to see who gets the very important first victory.

Here’s when you should tune in to see the game:

  • Date: Saturday,
  • Time: 12:00 p.m. ET
  • TV Channel: ACC Network
  • Live Stream: fuboTV (watch here)

Rutgers at Boston College injury report:

Rutgers:

  • RB Aaron Young – Questionable (Undisclosed), DL Mohamed Toure – Out for season (knee), LB Moses Walker – Out for season (knee)

Boston College:

  • TE Joey Luchetti – Out for season (Undisclosed), OL Christian Mahongany – Out for season (knee)

Players to watch:

Gavin Wimsatt (Rutgers – QB): One of the top rated recruits in program history, Wimsatt is undoubtedly the future at the position for the Knights. However, incumbent Noah Vedral is a veteran who was named as a team captain for the second straight season. Schiano has been non-committal to a starter. Expect to see both during the game, but also expect Wimsatt to outshine the competition.

[lawrence-related id=18393]

Pat Garwo III (Boston College – RB): Garwo was a 1,000 yard rusher as a sophomore last season, averaging 5.1 yards per carry. Knowing that he will has the lion’s share of the carries again this season and after a full offseason of training, Garwo will look to make a lot of noise. And the opportunity may present itself against a young, smaller Rutgers defensive line. This matchup may be the difference maker in the game.

Boston College Eagles Preview 2022

Boston College continues to be stuck in the land of the okay.

From 2013 to 2018 the Eagles won seven games five times in the six years. They were steady, consistent, and they couldn’t seem to break through and do a whole lot more.

Now they’re on a run of three straight six-win seasons, but to be fair, COVID had something to do with that – they haven’t been able to play in either of the last two bowl games they’ve been eligible for.

In Year Three under head coach Jeff Hafley, is this when Boston College can go from just okay to more of a player?

It won the first four games of last year and dropped six of the last eight once ACC play started. An injury to QB Phil Jurkovec had a lot to do with that, and now the experience is there, the talent level has been built up, and there are positives to build on. However …

Boston College Eagles Preview 2022: Offense

The offense was the worst in the ACC. It averaged just 350 yards per game, the passing attack went in the tank after Jurkovec got hurt – his return from a hand injury wasn’t enough to help – and there wasn’t the ground game in place to make up for it.

Jurkovec is back, and he just might be the difference-maker for a pro style attack that would like to speed things up a wee bit. A good pro prospect, there’s a chance Jurkovec does for the Eagles what Kenny Pickett did for Pitt last year. That might be asking a lot, but the talent is there to crank up the downfield attack.

The receivers are going to be great. Zay Flowers is one of best returning wideouts in the ACC, with the ability to be a volume catcher as well as a deep threat. Leading receiver TE Hunter Long is gone, but the rest of the corps is loaded with veterans and Notre Dame transfer George Takacs helps the tight end situation. However …

The offensive line needs a reboot. The parts to the passing game are great, the running backs were fine even after David Bailey left for Colorado State last year – Pat Garwo can handle the work again – but the offensive line is all but starting over.

It’s almost impossible to replace the NFL talent of Zion Johnson (LA Chargers), Alec Lindstrom (Dallas), Tyler Vrabel (Atlanta) and Ben Petrula (Cleveland). There’s size, and this group should be okay in time, but any offensive improvement starts here.

Boston College Eagles Preview 2022: Defense

The defense did what it could considering the offense didn’t provide enough help. The Eagles finished fourth in the ACC in total defense, was third in the nation in pass D, and even though it struggled at times against the run, it was a good season overall.

There has to be more of a pass rush and more plays behind the line, but seven starters are expected back with enough talent and depth to be even stronger.

It starts with the defensive front. A bit by design, this isn’t an attacking group that’s going to take a whole lot of chances to get into the backfield. However, there should be a decent rotation in the interior and leading sacker Marcus Valdez – just five sacks and seven tackles for loss – returns on one end.

Leading tackler Kam Arnold and good-hitting all-star safety Jaiden Woodbey are back in a strong back seven. The safeties are big, the corners can do a little of everything, and if the pass rush is just a wee bit better, one of the best pass defenses college football will do it all again.

Where every ACC team landed in the first AP top-25 poll of the 2022 CFB season

See where every ACC team ranks ahead of the 2022 college football season.

We are near the start of the 2022 college football season, and it couldn’t come sooner.

As we approach the first games of the season, we now have the very first AP top-25 poll. Teams will have an idea of where they stand heading into their first week of competition with the opportunity to either rise to the top or fade into obscurity.

The ACC is well represented in this first AP poll, with five teams listed in the top-25. Clemson sits the highest among ACC teams as the only team ranked in the top ten.

Here’s how every ACC team ranked, or didn’t, in the Preseason AP Poll.

The definitive, final, ‘show me the money’ top 25 future Big Ten expansion candidates

If the Big Ten expands again in the future, this is the list of teams and the rankings that Big Ten brass should operate from.

Enough talk about who fits in academically with the Big Ten through their Association of American Universities ranking. Let’s get down to brass tax. Who can Big Ten commissioner Kevin Warren add that increases everyone’s bottom line?

Let’s end the charade. That’s what all of this expansion business is about anyways. Warren and others can act like it’s about respected research universities, but this is about dollars and cents. It’s why he convinced Pac-12 commissioner George Kliavkoff that they were on the same team, and then turned around and poached his league’s two biggest assets.

For the most part, this isn’t about regional fits anymore. USC and UCLA joining the Big Ten in 2024 shows us that. Now, adding a dance partner or two for the Trojans and Bruins makes sense, but only if it enhances the league members’ per-school payouts.

So, what should the top 25 big board of future Big Ten expansion candidates look like? Feel free to reference this list as needed Mr. Warren. It’s the “Show Me the Money” rankings. If your school isn’t on this list, sorry, you’re not joining the Big Ten conference now or in the future.

For our friends over in Ames, Iowa, save your time. Iowa State isn’t joining the Big Ten and, in fact, they’re not in the top 25 pool of candidates either. This is about TV ratings and expanding market shares. The Cyclones don’t add anything that the Big Ten doesn’t already have with the Iowa Hawkeyes.

Every program is fair game so long as they aren’t already in the Big Ten or SEC.Without further ado, here’s the official, no-need-to-look-anywhere else top 25 future Big Ten expansion candidates.

Clemson figures to have its share of newcomers that will contribute immediately this fall, but what about the Tigers’ competition?

The Clemson Insider is taking a look at some of the new faces around the ACC that could make an immediate impact for their new teams. Whether it be transfers or incoming freshmen, we’ll start with key players on teams that the Tigers will face next season before moving on to the rest of the league.

Boston College

TE George Takacs

Takacs is an intriguing prospect that could fill in immediately for the departed Trae Barry, who was Boston College’s second-leading receiver at tight end last season. At 6-foot-6 and 247 pounds, Takacs, who had just three catches last season, spent most of his time in South Bend as a run blocker, but he has the frame and the opportunity to be a bigger threat in the passing game for the Eagles this fall.

WR Dino Tomlin

The son of Pittsburgh Steelers coach Mike Tomlin, the younger Tomlin didn’t have much of a role at Maryland as a reserve the last three seasons. Boston College still has all-conference receiver Zay Flowers on the outside, but the speedy Tomlin could be a factor in the slot and on special teams. The 6-0, 165-pounder was a three-star recruit coming out of high school.

TE/WR Joseph Griffin Jr.

Griffin was the highest-ranked recruit in Boston College’s signing class, earning offers from the likes of Notre Dame and Arizona before ultimately choosing to stay close to home. As a 6-4, 200-pound receiver, it’s easy to see why the Springfield native was coveted by multiple Power Five programs. Griffin had more than 100 catches, 1,900 receiving yards and 20 touchdown receptions during his high school career and may be too talented for the Eagles to keep off the field this season.

Ohio State and Boston College to meet on the gridiron in 2035 and 2036

Ohio State has finalized an agreement to play Boston College on a future schedule #GoBucks

Ohio State and Boston College have come to terms on an agreement to play on the football field in 2035 and 2036. An original arrangement was made in 2012 to play in 2020 and 2021, but like a lot of things, that was re-visited because of the COVID-19 pandemic. The games were originally moved to 2023 and 2024, then moved again to 2026 and 2027, and now out to the recently communicated dates on Thursday.

Ohio State will play host to the Eagles on September 15, 2035, and will have a return trip to Chestnut Hill on September 13, 2036. It’ll be the first time the two programs have met since the 1995 season, a 38-6 OSU victory in the Kickoff Classic out in East Rutherford, New Jersey.

The new dates now confirm home-and-home series with Notre Dame, Washington, Texas, Alabama, Georgia, and Boston College. The future dates line up like the following:

Sept. 3, 2022 – Notre Dame

Sept. 23, 2023 – at Notre Dame

Sept. 14, 2024 – at Washington

Aug. 30, 2025 – Texas

Sept. 13, 2025 – Washington

Sept. 12, 2026 – at Texas

Sept. 18, 2027 – Alabama

Sept. 9, 2028 – at Alabama

Sept. 14, 2030 – at Georgia

Aug. 30, 2031 – Georgia

Sept. 15, 2035 – Boston College

Sept. 13, 2036 – at Boston College

As always, a lot of these agreements are made years in advance. As more is made available to round out future schedules, we’ll update you accordingly.

Iowa Hawkeyes offer 2023 RB Nolan Ray out of Michigan

Nolan Ray, a three-star running back out of Brother Rice High School in Michigan, picked up an offer from the Iowa Hawkeyes.

Iowa has identified another playmaker it would like to add to its 2023 class. Six-foot, 195 pound running back Nolan Ray picked up an offer from the Hawkeyes.

Ray is a running back out of Brother Rice High School in Bloomfield Hills, Mich. According to 247Sports, Ray is a three-star running back, the No. 52 running back in the 2023 class and the No. 16 player from Michigan.

Rivals ranks Ray as a three-star talent as well and as the No. 16 player from the Great Lakes State. On3 also regards Ray as a three-star running back, the No. 73 running back in the 2023 class and the No. 18 player from Michigan. ESPN does not have a star rating for Ray.

Ray holds three other power-five offers from Boston College, Maryland and Pittsburgh according to 247Sports. He also has offers from Army, Ball State, Buffalo, Central Michigan, Marshall, Miami (Ohio), Ohio, Temple, Toledo and Western Michigan.

Currently, Iowa has seven commits in its 2023 class. That group includes quarterback Marco Lainez III, EDGE Chase Brackney, athlete Alex Mota, linebacker Ben Kueter, offensive lineman Leighton Jones, defensive back John Nestor and defensive lineman Maddux Borcherding-Johnson. Iowa’s 2023 class is currently ranked No. 14 by 247Sports, No. 16 by Rivals and No. 20 by On3. ESPN’s Craig Haubert also gave Iowa an early ranking of No. 15 in his 2023 class rankings.

Iowa’s 2023 class doesn’t include a pledge from a running back yet, so adding Ray would be an important get for the Hawkeyes if they can close the deal. Here’s a look at Ray’s junior season Hudl highlights at Brother Rice High School.
