Carolina Hurricanes at Boston Bruins Game 6 odds, picks and predictions

Analyzing Thursday’s Carolina Hurricanes at Boston Bruins Game 6 odds and lines, with NHL expert picks, predictions and best bets.

The Carolina Hurricanes and Boston Bruins meet for Game 6 of their 1st-round Eastern Conference playoff series Thursday at TD Garden in Boston. Carolina leads the series 3-2. Puck drop is scheduled for 7 p.m. ET (TNT). Below, we look at the Hurricanes vs. Bruins odds and lines, and make our expert NHL picks, predictions and bets.

The Hurricanes picked up the victory on home ice in Game 5 as they routed the Bruins 5-1. Carolina has won all 3 games at home by a combined score of 15-4, but they’re 0-2 in Boston while being outscored 9-4.

The Bruins seek a win at TD Garden to force a Game 7 Saturday in Raleigh. The Bruins are averaging 2.6 goals per game in this series, but 4.5 goals per game in 2 outings on home ice.

Odds provided by Tipico Sportsbook; access USA TODAY Sports Scores and Sports Betting Odds hub for a full list. Lines last updated at 7:37 a.m. ET.

  • Money line: Hurricanes +102 (bet $100 to win $102) | Bruins -125 (bet $125 to win $100)
  • Against the spread (ATS): Hurricanes +1.5 (-250) | Bruins -1.5 (+180)
  • Over/Under (O/U): 5.5 (O: -125 | U: +100)

Hurricanes at Bruins projected goalies

Antti Raanta (15-5-4, 2.45 GAA, .912 SV%, 2 SO – regular season) vs. Jeremy Swayman (23-14-3, 2.41 GAA, .914 SV%, 3 SO – regular season)

Raanta did a great job in Game 5, turning aside 33 of the 34 shots he faced to earn his second victory of the postseason. His 4 games played in these playoffs have already set a career-high for postseason appearances in a single season. He is 2-1-0 with a 1.96 GAA and .942 SV% so far.

Swayman suffered his first loss of the postseason in Game 5, allowing 4 goals on 37 shots. He is still 2-1-0 with a 2.69 GAA and .911 SV% since taking over for the ineffective G Linus Ullmark in Game 3.

[tipico]

Hurricanes at Bruins picks and predictions

Prediction

Bruins 4, Hurricanes 2

Money line

The BRUINS (-125) registered a pair of home victories in Games 3 and 4. Boston actually was forced to erase a 2-1 deficit in the most recent home outing. The home team is 5-for-5 so far in this series, and with the exception of Game 3, none of the games have really been terribly close.

Against the spread

The BRUINS -1.5 (+180) are worth a shot on the puck line for a chance to nearly double up. The home team is not only 5-0 in this series so far, but the margin of victory is 3.2 goals per game — the most of any series in the postseason. If you like the home team and the favorite, you should also like them on the puck line.

Over/Under

OVER 5.5 (-125) is the lean here, even so slightly. The Over is 4-0-1 in this series but we have had a total of 6 goals in 3 of the 5 outings, barely cashing the Over.

Carolina Hurricanes at Boston Bruins Game 4 odds, picks and predictions

Analyzing Sunday’s Carolina Hurricanes at Boston Bruins Game 4 odds and lines, with NHL expert picks, predictions and best bets.

The Carolina Hurricanes (2-1) and Boston Bruins (1-2) meet for Game 4 of their 1st-round Eastern Conference playoff series Sunday at TD Garden in Boston. Puck drop is scheduled for 12:30 p.m. ET (ESPN). Below, we look at the Hurricanes vs. Bruins odds and lines, and make our expert NHL picks, predictions and bets.

Rookie G Pyotr Kochetkov was no match for the Bruins or their hostile crowd in his first-ever NHL playoff start on the road in Game 3 Friday. While C Vincent Trocheck staked him to an early 1-0 lead midway through the 1st period but the B’s rattled off 4 straight goals, including a shorthanded marker by C Charlie Coyle late in the 1st frame to amp up the crowd.

Rookie G Jeremy Swayman took over in the net after G Linus Ullmark started the first 2 games in Raleigh, and he turned aside 25 of the 27 shots to give Boston its 1st win of the best-of-7 series.

Hurricanes at Bruins odds and lines

Odds provided by Tipico Sportsbook; access USA TODAY Sports Scores and Sports Betting Odds hub for a full list. Lines last updated Saturday at 1:31 p.m. ET.

  • Money line: Hurricanes +110 (bet $100 to win $110) | Bruins -135 (bet $135 to win $100)
  • Against the spread (ATS): Hurricanes +1.5 (-250) | Bruins -1.5 (+180)
  • Over/Under (O/U): 5.5 (O: -135 | U: +110)

Hurricanes at Bruins projected goalies

Antti Raanta (15-5-4, 2.45 GAA, .912 SV%, 2 SO – regular season) vs. Jeremy Swayman (23-14-3, 2.41 GAA, .914 SV%, 3 SO – regular season)

Raanta was knocked out of Game 2 early after a collision with RW David Pastrnak. He was able to return to pre-game skate ahead of Game 3 and could have started. However, head coach Rod Brind’Amour elected to use the rookie Kochetkov. Raanta stopped 35 of 36 shots in the Game 1 victory, and all 6 shots he faced in Game 2 before departing.

Swayman started Game 3 after Ullmark lost the first 2 games, and the rookie stopped 25 of the 27 shots he faced. He also stopped 21 of the 23 shots he faced in a 3-0 loss Oct. 28 at Carolina, his only regular-season appearance against the Hurricanes.

[tipico]

Hurricanes at Bruins picks and predictions

Prediction

Hurricanes 4, Bruins 3

Money line

The HURRICANES (+110) had a poor outing in Game 3, as they imploded on special teams. Carolina was due for a loss after winning 8 straight heading into Boston. It’s not going to lose a second consecutive game. This is still a team that outscored Boston 22-4 in the first 5 regular-season and playoff matchups. Look for Carolina to get back to basics.

Against the spread

The Hurricanes +1.5 (-250) will set you back two and a half times your potential return for a little insurance, and that’s just not a good long-term betting strategy.

AVOID.

Over/Under

OVER 5.5 (-135) is the best play on the board as it’s 3-for-3 so far in the series. We’ve had a total of 4 goalies patrolling the crease in this series, with 2 different backstops for each team. The offense has ruled the day so far, with an average of 6.33 goals per game in this series.

Carolina Hurricanes at Boston Bruins Game 3 odds, picks and predictions

Analyzing Friday’s Carolina Hurricanes at Boston Bruins Game 3 odds and lines, with NHL expert picks, predictions and best bets.

[mm-video type=playlist id=01fb7dafw2b08817yr player_id=none image=https://sportsbookwire.usatoday.com/wp-content/plugins/mm-video/images/playlist-icon.png]

The Carolina Hurricanes (2-0) and Boston Bruins (0-2) meet for Game 3 of their 1st-round Eastern Conference playoff series Friday at TD Garden in Boston. Puck drop is scheduled for 7 p.m. ET (TNT). Below, we look at the Hurricanes vs. Bruins odds and lines, and make our expert NHL picks, predictions and bets.

The Hurricanes lost goaltender Antti Raanta to a lower-body injury in the first period after a collision with Bruins star David Pastrnak. Enter rookie Pyotr Kochetkov, who made 30 saves on 32 shots to earn the victory.

The B’s have been outscored 10-3 through the first two games of this series, while going 0-5 in five meetings overall against the Hurricanes. Carolina has outscored Boston 26-4 across those five outings.

Hurricanes at Bruins odds and lines

Odds provided by Tipico Sportsbook; access USA TODAY Sports Scores and Sports Betting Odds hub for a full list. Lines last updated at 7:30 a.m. ET.

  • Money line: Hurricanes +102 (bet $100 to win $102) | Bruins -125 (bet $125 to win $100)
  • Against the spread (ATS): Hurricanes +1.5 (-270) | Bruins -1.5 (+190)
  • Over/Under (O/U): 5.5 (O: -120 | U: -105)

Hurricanes at Bruins projected goalies

Pyotr Kochetkov (3-0-0, 2.42 GAA, .902 SV%, 0 SO – regular season) vs. Jeremy Swayman (23-14-3, 2.41 GAA, .914 SV%, 3 SO – regular season)

Kochetkov emerged as a hero in Game 2, not only for coming on in relief and steadying the ship, but also getting into a small skirmish with Brad Marchand. The Russian rookie is drawing comparisons to Cam Ward and the 2006 Stanley Cup championship run, which saw Ward emerge from nowhere to become a star. Can Kochetkov follow suit?

Head coach Bruce Cassidy changes course, rolling with Swayman over Linus Ullmark, who was snowed under in the first two games in Raleigh. Swayman faced the Hurricanes just once, way back on Oct. 28 at PNC Arena, allowing two goals on 23 shots in a 3-0 loss.

[tipico]

Hurricanes at Bruins picks and predictions

Prediction

Hurricanes 3, Bruins 2

Money line

The HURRICANES (+102) are slight underdogs, but they have shown very few signs of slowing down against the Bruins (-125). While yes, the change of venue should help the home side, Boston was outscored 13-1 in two home games against Carolina in two regular-season losses.

Against the spread

The Hurricanes +1.5 (-270) will cost you over two-and-a-half times your potential return, and that’s just too much risk for not enough reward. If you like Carolina, and you should, play them straight up.

AVOID.

Over/Under

UNDER 5.5 (-105) is worth playing lightly. The Over is the dominant trend for the Canes, but the Under is 8-3-2 in the past 13 for the Bruins, and 5-0-1 in their past six games at home. The change to Swayman should slow down the Carolina offense somewhat, and Kochetkov certainly looked capable in Game 2.

Boston Bruins at Columbus Blue Jackets odds, picks and prediction

Analyzing Monday’s Boston Bruins at Columbus Blue Jackets odds and lines, with NHL expert picks, predictions and best bets.

The Boston Bruins (43-20-5) visit the Buckeye State to battle the Columbus Blue Jackets (32-32-5) Monday at Nationwide Arena. Puck drop is scheduled for 7 p.m. ET (ESPN+). Below, we look at the Bruins vs. Blue Jackets odds and lines, and make our expert NHL picks, predictions and bets.

The Beantown Bullies have won eight of their last 10 games and just dismissed the Blue Jackets 5-2 on the front end of the home-and-home Saturday. Boston sits two points behind the Tampa Bay Lightning and Toronto Maple Leafs in the Atlanta Division as they look to avoid the first-round matchup against the Carolina Hurricanes they’re currently pegged for.

The Blue Jackets have fallen in the tank as they’ve lost six contests in a row. They are mathematically still in the hunt, but they’re down 15 points with 13 games to go.

Bruins at Blue Jackets odds, spread and lines

Odds provided by Tipico Sportsbook; access USA TODAY Sports Scores and Sports Betting Odds hub for a full list. Lines last updated at 8:17 a.m. ET.

  • Money line: Bruins -240 (bet $240 to win $100) | Blue Jackets +190 (bet $100 to win $190)
  • Against the spread (ATS): Bruins -1.5 (+105) | Blue Jackets +1.5 (-130)
  • Over/Under (O/U): 6.5 (O: -102 | U: -122)

Bruins at Blue Jackets projected goalies

Linus Ullmark (21-9-2, 2.65 GAA, .910 SV%) vs. Elvis Merzlikins (22-18-5, 3.41 GAA, .902 SV%, 2 SO)

Ullmark was great in March with a 4-1-1 record, 2.20 GAA and .915 SV%. The tandem of G Jeremy Swayman and Ullmark has really solidified the back end for the B’s. This is his first matchup against Columbus this season, and he is fresh with his last game coming March 31.

Merzlikins wasn’t terrible Saturday as he was pelted for 40 shots and allowed just 3 goals. Once the net was empty, the Bruins scored 2 more. He’s 0-1-1 with a 3.47 GAA and a .903 SV% across two games against the Bruins this season.

[tipico]

Bruins at Blue Jackets odds, lines, picks and predictions

Prediction

Bruins 5, Blue Jackets 2

Money line

The Bruins are a complete team right now. C Patrice Bergeron has a goal and 6 helpers in four games since returning from injury. RW David Pastrnak had 10 goals and 8 assists in March.

Is it possible Columbus ends their losing streak here at home? Sure, but not likely, and we’re going to PASS on spending -240 on Boston.

Against the spread

Columbus has been profitable on the puck line at home as it’s 22-13 ATS, but there’s nothing in the data that tells us they can hang with the Bruins right now. RW Patrik Laine doesn’t have a goal in six games, and he didn’t even register a shot Saturday.

Take the even money and go with BRUINS -1.5 (+105).

Over/Under

Boston has been ablaze with four goals per game in its last 10 outings. Columbus, on the other hand, has just 14 goals in its last 6 games. The Over is 4-0 in the Bruins’ last four games and last four as favorites. The Over is 5-0-1 in the Blue Jackets’ last six games with a day of rest. Boston may need some empty-netters to push it across, but LEAN to the OVER 6.5 (-102).

New Jersey Devils at Boston Bruins odds, picks and prediction

Analyzing Thursday’s New Jersey Devils at Boston Bruins odds and lines, with NHL expert picks, predictions and best bets.

The New Jersey Devils (24-37-5) face off against the Boston Bruins (41-20-5) Thursday at TD Garden. Puck drop is scheduled for 7 p.m. ET (ESPN+). Below, we look at the Devils vs. Bruins odds and lines, and make our expert NHL picks, predictions and bets.

The Devils come to town on the heels of a 3-2 shootout win over the Montreal Canadiens Sunday. They were heavily favored, and the game shouldn’t have been that close. C Jack Hughes has led the charge with 5 goals and 2 assists in the last 4 games.

The Bruins were throttled 6-4 Tuesday by the visiting Toronto Maple Leafs. RW David Pastrnak scored his team-leading 38th goal of the season. He has 5 goals and 2 assists in the last 3 games.

Devils at Bruins odds, spread and lines

Odds provided by Tipico Sportsbook; access USA TODAY Sports Scores and Sports Betting Odds hub for a full list. Lines last updated at 3:18 p.m. ET.

  • Money line: Devils +205 (bet $100 to win $205) | Bruins -260 (bet $260 to win $100)
  • Against the spread (ATS): Devils +1.5 (-112) | Bruins -1.5 (-108)
  • Over/Under (O/U): 6.5 (O: -108 | U: -112)

Devils at Bruins projected goalies

Nico Daws (8-8-0, 3.05 GAA, .900 SV%) vs. Linus Ullmark (20-9-2, 2.70 GAA, .909 SV%)

Daws was solid in his last start, stopping 31 of 33 shots in the Montreal win. It was a positive performance after allowing 4 goals apiece in 4 of his 5 previous games. This will be Daws’ first matchup against the Bruins.

Ullmark came on in relief Tuesday’s Toronto loss, and stopped all 7 shots he faced. He won his previous 3 starts and allowed an average of 2.0 goals in the stretch. He beat the Devils in January, stopping 23 of the 26 shots in a 5-3 home victory.

[tipico]

Devils at Bruins odds, lines, picks and predictions

Prediction

Bruins 4, Devils 3

Money line

The Bruins are heavily favored here — and rightly so. I like Boston in this spot.

C Patrice Bergeron has been quiet lately, and he’s due to break out down the stretch. However, with an ML price of -260, there’s no value here outside of packaging Boston in a parlay.

PASS.

Against the spread

Boston is an awful puck-line team at home as they’re 8-25. The Devils are 16-17 ATS on the road and 31-35 ATS overall.

Three of New Jersey’s last 6 losses have been by 1 goal, and the price isn’t too bad here.

Let’s go with DEVILS +1.5 (-112).

Over/Under

There are some trends leaning to an Over.

The Bruins have been decent the last 10 games with 3.3 goals per contest. The Devils are right there with them at 3.2 goals per game.

Both of their two earlier meetings this season cashed Over tickets.

The Over is 6-1 in the Devils’ last 7 games as underdogs.

The Over is 6-1-1 in the Bruins’ last 8 against Metropolitan opponents.

Let’s slightly LEAN OVER 6.5 (-108).

Toronto Maple Leafs at Boston Bruins odds, picks, and predictions

Analyzing Tuesday’s Toronto Maple Leafs at Boston Bruins odds and lines, with NHL expert picks, predictions and best bets.

The Toronto Maple Leafs (41-19-5) hit the road to face the Boston Bruins (41-19-5) at TD Garden Tuesday. Puck drop is scheduled for 7 p.m. ET (ESPN+). Below, we look at the Maple Leafs vs. Bruins odds and lines, and make our expert NHL picks, predictions and bets.

The Maple Leafs worked over a good Florida Panthers team by a 5-2 score Sunday. That was a bounce back from an embarrassing 4-2 defeat at the Eastern Conference last-place Montreal Canadiens Saturday.

The Bruins have registered four consecutive wins to pull into a third-place tie with the rival Maple Leafs in the Atlantic Division. Boston has also won seven of the previous eight games, including a 6-3 win Saturday against the New York Islanders last time out.

Maple Leafs at Bruins odds, spread and lines

Odds provided by Tipico Sportsbook; access USA TODAY Sports Scores and Sports Betting Odds hub for a full list. Lines last updated at 7:20 a.m. ET.

  • Money line: Maple Leafs +110 (bet $100 to win $110) | Bruins -135 (bet $135 to win $100)
  • Against the spread (ATS): Maple Leafs +1.5 (-240) | Bruins -1.5 (+175)
  • Over/Under (O/U): 6.5 (O: +100 | U: -125)

Maple Leafs at Bruins projected goalies

Erik Kallgren (2-2-1, 2.49 GAA, .917 SV%, 1 SO) vs. Jeremy Swayman (19-8-3, 2.09 GAA, .925 SV%, 3 SO)

The rookie Kallgren is expected to get the starting nod. He allowed 3 goals on 17 shots in Saturday’s loss in Montreal for a second consecutive road loss since a 2-0-1 start to his career.

Swayman has actually been better on the road than at home, although he is still a solid 8-5-1 with a 2.52 GAA and .906 SV% at home. This will be his first career start against the rival Maple Leafs.

[tipico]

Maple Leafs at Bruins odds, lines, picks and predictions

Prediction

Bruins 4, Maple Leafs 2

Money line

The BRUINS (-135) are actually a pretty strong value on home ice, as the Maple Leafs have dropped three in a row on the road. Toronto is also 0-4 in its last four as a road underdog, and traditionally it doesn’t play very well in Boston. The Bruins have won nine of the previous 12 meetings in New England.

Against the spread

The BRUINS -1.5 (+175) are worth a shot on the puck line.

Boston has been red-hot lately. While just two of its seven wins in the past eight games have been by more than 1 goal, each of Boston’s six wins in the previous 10 meetings in this series since April 13, 2019, ha2 been by 2 or more goals.

Over/Under

UNDER 6.5 (-125) is only worth playing lightly.

The Toronto goaltending situation is a little on the shaky side, and the offense is always capable of scoring plenty of goals. However, if there is a lean it’s to the Under based on Swayman’s play of late.

Boston Bruins at Columbus Blue Jackets odds, picks and prediction

Analyzing Saturday’s Boston Bruins at Columbus Blue Jackets odds and lines, with NHL expert picks, predictions and best bets.

The Boston Bruins (33-18-4) visit the Columbus Blue Jackets (28-25-2) Saturday at Nationwide Arena. Puck drop is scheduled for 7 p.m. ET (NHL Network). Below, we look at the Bruins vs. Blue Jackets odds and lines, and make our expert NHL picks, predictions and bets.

Boston enters this tussle winners of six of its last seven games. The Bruins disposed of the Vegas Golden Knights 5-2 Thursday and have been getting contributions from reliable and unlikely sources alike. RW David Pastrnak has 7 goals in as many games, and C Craig Smith broke out with a hat trick Thursday.

Columbus nearly pulled off the upset Friday but was downed 4-3 in overtime by the Los Angeles Kings. RW Patrik Laine remains ablaze with 15 goals in the last 14 games.

Bruins at Blue Jackets odds, spread and lines

Odds provided by Tipico Sportsbook; access USA TODAY Sports Scores and Sports Betting Odds hub for a full list. Lines last updated at 9:30 a.m. ET.

  • Money line: Bruins -220 (bet $220 to win $100) | Blue Jackets +175 (bet $100 to win $175)
  • Against the spread (ATS): Bruins -1.5 (+120) | Blue Jackets +1.5 (-150)
  • Over/Under (O/U): 5.5 (O: -122 | U: -102)

Bruins at Blue Jackets projected goalies

Jeremy Swayman (14-7-3, 1.95 GAA, .930 SV%, 3 SO) vs. Jean-Francois Berube (3-1-0, 3.25 GAA, .924 SV%, 0 SO)

The second-year man Swayman holds the NHL lead with a 1.95 GAA. He is 21-10-3 with a 1.82 GAA and a .934 SV% over the first 35 games of his career. The B’s have a clear advantage when he’s between the pipes. He played Monday and Thursday, which should have him fresh enough to lace them up for this one.

Berube has been a crash test dummy in his first four starts this season seeing an average of 42.5 shots per night. He has allowed at least 3 goals in each, but he has really stood his ground stopping 92.4% of them. He has been off for a week and enters this one rested for another barrage.

Bruins at Blue Jackets odds, lines, picks and predictions

Prediction

Bruins 4, Blue Jackets 1

Money line

The BRUINS (-220) are a good play even though they’re slightly above my limit for money line favorites.

The Blue Jackets lost a heartbreaker in overtime Friday, and the Bruins are on a tear. Boston has won six of seven games and has averaged 4.1 goals per game across that span. The B’s are also 5-1 in their last six on the road. With advantages across the board, including in rest, this one shouldn’t be close.

Against the spread

The BRUINS -1.5 (+120) aren’t a good puck line team at 22-33 on the year, but they are 16-12 against the puck line on the road. The Blue Jackets will have tired legs in their fourth game this week and on back-to-back nights. Back Boston here for a half-unit.

Over/Under

The UNDER 5.5 (-102) is the preferred route here, but it may get juiced up the closer we get to puck drop. The Under is 7-1 in the last eight meetings between these two and 4-0 in the last four in Columbus. Boston should cover their end, but the wary Blue Jackets may not. Back the Under or avoid.

Bruins at Kings odds, lines, picks and predictions

Prediction

Bruins 3, Kings 2

Money line

The BRUINS (-130) have played well on this road trip, but wins over the Kraken and Sharks isn’t exactly a huge undertaking. This game against the Kings (+105) will be the biggest test, perhaps of the entire trip.

L.A. has been rock solid lately, but it hasn’t fared well in recent years against Boston. The Kings are just 2-5 in the past seven meetings, and the road team has won five of the past six in this series. Back the B’s.

Against the spread

The Kings +1.5 (-270) are quite expensive, costing you over two-and-a-half times your initial stake. That’s quite a bit of risk, and if you like L.A., just play them straight up. However, I like Boston much better due to the series trends, and the fact it is equally as hot.

AVOID.

Over/Under

The UNDER 5.5 (-115) is the lean in this one. For Boston, the Under is an impressive 5-0-2 across the past seven outings, including 5-0-1 in the past six on the road. The Over cashed in Saturday’s game for L.A., but the Under is 2-1 in the previous three outings, with the Kings yielding just 1.67 goals per game during the span.

Boston Bruins at Colorado Avalanche odds, picks and prediction

Analyzing Wednesday’s Boston Bruins at Colorado Avalanche odds and lines, with NHL expert picks, predictions and best bets.

The Boston Bruins (24-13-2) travel to meet the Colorado Avalanche (29-8-3) Wednesday at Ball Arena. Puck drop is scheduled for 10 p.m. ET. Below, we look at the Bruins vs. Avalanche odds and lines, and make our expert NHL picks, predictions and bets.

The Bruins are looking to rebound from a 5-3 loss Monday against the Anaheim Ducks. This will be the first road game for the B’s since Jan. 10 when they posted a 7-3 victory in Washington. The Bruins have won three in a row away from home, outscoring the opposition 17-6 in those outings.

The Avalanche won their seventh straight game when they blanked the Chicago Blackhawks 2-0 behind G Pavel Francouz. The Avs have outscored the opposition 24-9 during the win streak.

  • Money line: Bruins +155 (bet $100 to win $155) | Avalanche -190 (bet $190 to win $100)
  • Against the spread (ATS): Bruins +1.5 (-170) | Avalanche -1.5 (+133)

Bruins at Avalanche projected goalies

Linus Ullmark (14-5-0, 2.55 GAA, .915 SV%) vs. Darcy Kuemper (19-5-1, 2.63 GAA, .913 SV%, 1 SO)

Ullmark has been on fire in January as he’s won all seven of his starts. He has posted a 2.60 GAA and .901 SV% while allowing 3 or fewer goals in each of his eight appearances.

Kuemper and Francouz have also been on fire in January. Kuemper has won three straight starts, including a shutout against the Arizona Coyotes Jan. 15 and Francouz has won six starts, including a pair of shutouts.

Bruins at Avalanche odds, lines, picks and predictions

Prediction

Avalanche 4, Bruins 2

Money line

The AVALANCHE (-190) is a little more expensive than I generally care to play, but sometimes you have to make an exception. Ullmark has been hot, but the Bruins have been a bit too erratic lately. Colorado is playing much better hockey, and it is the preferred play here.

Against the spread

The AVALANCHE -1.5 (+133) are worth a roll of the dice, covering the puck line in four of their last six games during their win streak.

The Avs are also 7-0 in their last seven against Eastern Conference foes while going 44-9 in the last 53 as a home favorite. Play Colorado, as it has won six of the last seven in this series.

Over/Under

UNDER 6.5 (-115) is the lean, ever so slightly. The Under is 10-4-1 in the last 15 meetings in this series and is 5-0-1 in the last six overall for the Avalanche. Goaltending has been tremendous for Colorado lately, and it will continue in this one.

Washington Capitals at Boston Bruins odds, picks and prediction

Analyzing Thursday’s Washington Capitals at Boston Bruins odds and lines, with NHL expert picks, predictions and best bets.

The Washington Capitals (22-9-9) visit the Boston Bruins (22-12-2) Thursday. Puck drop at TD Garden is set for 7 p.m. ET. Below, we look at the Capitals vs. Bruins odds and lines, and make our expert NHL picks, predictions and bets.

The Capitals have had a rough January with just two wins in seven outings. They picked up a 4-3 overtime win at home over the Winnipeg Jets last time out Tuesday as LW Alex Ovechkin scored for the third consecutive game and extended his point streak to five games.

The Bruins had a five-game win streak snapped Tuesday when they dropped a 7-1 decision to the Carolina Hurricanes on home ice. G Tuukka Rask allowed 5 goals on just 12 shots before getting the hook and will not be between the pipes Thursday. Boston won at Washington 7-3 Jan. 10.

Capitals at Bruins projected goalies

Vitek Vanecek (8-4-5, 2.49 GAA, .911 SV%, 1 SO) vs. Linus Ullmark (13-5-0, 2.52 GAA, .917 SV%)

Vanecek allowed 3 goals on 33 shots in the overtime win against the Jets Tuesday and recorded his lone shutout of the season with 23 saves two starts back at the New York Islanders. Vanecek came in relief and allowed 3 goals on 15 shots to the Bruins Jan. 10.

Ullmark has picked up wins in all six of his January starts, although he’s allowed 3 goals apiece in four of those games and has been granted plenty of goal support – including his Jan. 10 start against the Capitals. However, the Swede hasn’t allowed more than 3 goals in a start since Nov. 11.

Capitals at Bruins odds, lines, picks and predictions

Prediction

Bruins 4, Capitals 3

Money line

The BRUINS (-175) are right on the edge of a safe money line play at this price as I expect them to get back on track against a Washington squad that’s struggled all month. Boston was embarrassed at home Tuesday and will come out strong and get back on track against a team they handled just 10 days ago.

I’d bet BRUINS (-175), but I’d certainly consider a pass if the line gets much steeper.

Against the spread

AVOID.

The Capitals insurance price (+1.5, -175) is just too steep for a line that could be ruined with an empty-net goal in the waning minutes of play. The Bruins price (-1.5, +135) isn’t enticing enough to chase a multi-goal victory against a team of the Capitals’ caliber, even if they are in a slump.

Over/Under

The OVER 5.5 (-130) is my favorite play in this game.

The Over is 7-2-1 for Boston in January, and it’s hit in three of the Caps’ last four games. Both squads are sporting netminders that are comfortable letting in 3 goals, and both squads sport offensive production that can help push the tempo.
