Browns open up roster spot, waive CB Bopete Keyes with injury designation

The Browns are now back down to 89 players after waiving one with an injury designation

The Cleveland Browns officially have the pads on and are entering into their full contact phase of training camp as they wrap up their week at The Greenbrier in West Virginia. One player, however, will not be returning to Berea with the rest of the team as cornerback Bopete Keyes has been waived with an injury designation (according to WEWS’s Camryn Justice). The injury has not been disclosed by the team.

Keyes now departs his seventh team in three seasons after being a seventh round selection of the Kansas City Chiefs. The Browns now have an open roster spot to get their total back up to 90 as they approach the Pro Football Hall of Fame game on Thursday night.

Texans release CB BoPete Keyes from practice squad

The Houston Texans have released former Kansas City Chiefs cornerback BoPete Keyes from their practice squad.

The Houston Texans continue to make moves to their practice squad ahead as the season drags on for the 1-7-1 club.

The Texans released former Kansas City Chiefs cornerback BoPete Keyes. The Tulane product joined the Texans on Nov. 17 but was released a day later, ending his second stint with the team. The former 2020 seventh-rounder was initially on the Texans’ practice squad starting Sept. 13 through Oct. 18.

From Oct. 25 through Nov. 8, Keyes was a member of the Atlanta Falcons’ practice squad.

The 25-year-old from Laurel, Miss., did not see any activations for Houston during either of his tenures with the club in 2022. The last NFL action Keyes saw was in 2020 when he was a member of the Chicago Bears. Keyes played five special teams snaps for Chicago on Dec. 20, 2021.

Texans sign defensive back BoPete Keyes to practice squad ahead of matchup vs. Commanders

Keyes’ addition to the #Texans practice squad will help shore up the team’s secondary

After claiming running back Eno Benjamin off waivers earlier this week, the Houston Texans added another fresh face to their practice squad on Thursday by signing defensive back BoPete Keyes to their practice squad. The team also parted ways with practice squad running back Gerrid Doaks, indicating that they are comfortable with the depth they have at the position after moving on the aforementioned Benjamin.

While practice squad signings are rarely of consequence to teams at the midway point through the season, the Texans’ decision to sign Keyes should turn some heads given the defensive back’s pedigree. He has played for no less than five other teams since entering the league as a seventh-round pick in 2020 by way of the Kansas City Chiefs who selected him following their Super Bowl championship season.

Doaks, on the other hand, has only spent time with the Miami Dolphins since turning pro in 2021 as a fellow seventh-round selection out of the University of Cincinnati. He initially signed with the Texans in early September but was never elevated from the team’s practice squad for any on-field action.

For now, these moves won’t have much of an effect on Houston’s chances of getting their second win of the 2022 season against the Washington Commanders on Sunday, but the Texans’ decision to sign Keyes could pay dividends in the future. If he can channel his inner playmaker that he showed on film from his time in college at Tulane, Keyes could turn into a high-end rotational role player in the Texans’ secondary.

It is unknown if this signing is in any way related to rookie cornerback Derek Stingley’s designation as a non-participant in Thursday’s practice session, but Keyes could potentially see himself activated if Houston is short on defensive backs heading into their Week 11 matchup. Fans will want to keep an eye on the team’s active roster heading into Sunday’s action.

The Houston Texans have added a veteran defensive back to their practice squad as they enter the advent for Week 2.

The Texans signed former Kansas City Chiefs 2020 seventh-round pick BoPete Keyes to the practice squad Tuesday.

Keyes, 24, played eight games for the Chiefs as a rookie in 2020, starting in one game. Keyes collected eight combined tackles for Kansas City, who waived Keyes at the end of the 2021 preseason.

The 6-1, 202-pound defensive back spent time on the practice squads for the Indianapolis Colts, New England Patriots, and Chicago Bears in 2021. With the Colts and Bears, Keyes played five games combined and had a tackle. The Bears waived Keyes on Aug. 23 during the second round of roster cuts.

The Kansas City Chiefs have had no shortage of young talent flowing through their facilities in recent seasons, and another of their former players has made his way to a rival’s roster.

BoPete Keyes, a 2020 Chiefs seventh-round draft pick, signed with the New England Patriots on Tuesday, marking his second stint with a new team this season. It is unclear if he might actually see playing time under Bill Belichick, but the addition to their scout team is a clear indication that he remains a hot commodity that the Chiefs could regret moving on from.

Though his role in Kansas City was relatively limited, he managed to find the field on almost 15 percent of the Chiefs’ defensive snaps last season, and almost 25 percent of the team’s special teams snaps. He made the only start of his career in Week 16 of last season, recording eight tackles in a 38-21 loss to the Chargers.

After a spotless preseason left the Chiefs with too much talent and too few roster spots, Keyes was one of the odd men out when they made their final cut to 53 players. He was waived in August ahead of final roster cuts and Indianapolis was quick to claim him. They started giving him playing time starting in Week 4 before ultimately deciding to pursue other options after Week 7.

In Keyes, New England is getting a solid developmental prospect with plenty of upside. There’s a reason the Chiefs traded back into the 2020 NFL draft to acquire Keyes in the seventh round. He has the potential to become an NFL starter if he capitalizes on opportunities that may arise as the season wears on. The Patriots are one of the hottest teams in football right now, sitting atop the AFC East with an 8-4 record and all the momentum they need to be a playoff contender.

Keyes’ time in Kansas City may be over, but the team’s early investment in him could prove to be the difference in him finding a role with another team in the league.

Colts sign a pair of CBs to the practice squad

The Colts added a pair of CBs to the practice squad.

The Indianapolis Colts signed cornerbacks Anthony Chesley and Brian Poole to the practice squad and released cornerback BoPete Keyes from the practice squad, the team announced Monday.

Chesley has spent time on the practice squad and active roster for the Colts throughout the 2021 season. He was waived on Saturday when the Colts made room to call up safety Jahleel Addae before the Week 11 win over the Buffalo Bills.

Poole, 29, entered the league as an undrafted free agent in 2016 with the Atlanta Falcons. He has spent time with the  Falcons (2016–2018), New York Jets (2019–2020), New Orleans Saints (2021) and New England Patriots (2021).

In 70 career games (38 starts), Poole has recorded seven interceptions, 31 passes defended, six sacks, 17 tackles for loss and 18 quarterback hits.

Colts sign CB BoPete Keyes to the practice squad

Colts sign CB BoPete Keyes to the practice squad.

The Indianapolis Colts signed cornerback BoPete Keyes to the practice squad, the team announced Monday.

Keyes was a waiver claim for the Colts following the initial roster cuts in September but didn’t much work outside of a reserve role in the secondary. With T.J. Carrie coming off of the injured reserve list, Keyes was released from the active roster.

But with Keyes back, the Colts will have a little more depth in the secondary with knowledge of the scheme if he needs to be called up.

Colts’ BoPete Keyes (hamstring) ruled OUT vs. 49ers

Colts CB BoPete Keyes suffered a hamstring injury and won’t return vs. the 49ers.

Indianapolis Colts cornerback BoPete Keyes suffered a hamstring injury and was ruled out for the remainder of the Sunday night game against the San Francisco 49ers.

With Rock Ya-Sin already inactive due to an ankle injury and Xavier Rhodes suffering a calf injury during Sunday night’s game, the Colts are down to three cornerbacks in Kenny Moore, Isaiah Rodgers and Anthony Chesley.

Keyes hasn’t seen much playing time since the Colts claimed him off of waivers from the Kansas City Chiefs, serving mostly depth in the cornerback room. That depth is getting pretty thin as the injuries continue to pile up in the secondary.

Studs and duds from Colts’ 31-25 loss to Ravens

Studs and duds from the Colts’ 31-25 loss to the Ravens.

The Indianapolis Colts (1-4) nearly pulled off a miraculous upset on the road against the Baltimore Ravens (4-1) on Monday night but a late, fourth-quarter collapse resulted in a 31-25 loss in overtime.

It was pure domination by the Colts for the first three quarters as they took a 25-9 lead with 12 minutes remaining in the game. From that point on, it was the Lamar Jackson show.

The prime-time loss was a mixed bag. There were bright spots in the loss. However, they will be overshadowed by the dud performances of the night.

Here are the studs and duds from the 31-25 loss in Week 5:

6 Colts to watch vs. Dolphins in Week 4

Keep an eye on these Colts in the Week 4 matchup with the Dolphins.

The Indianapolis Colts (0-3) are one of the five winless teams across the league and will be looking to end that streak when they visit the Miami Dolphins (1-2) at Hard Rock Stadium on Sunday.

The Week 4 matchup is a big one for both teams. The Colts are looking to avoid an 0-4 start for the first time since 2011 and only the second time since Peyton Manning’s rookie season in 1998. The Dolphins are coming off of a tough overtime loss against the Las Vegas Raiders.

As the Colts play with their backs against the wall, here are six players to watch in the Week 4 matchup:
