Giants waive DE Boogie Basham

The New York Giants have waived defensive end Boogie Basham.

The New York Giants are parting ways with defensive end Boogie Basham.

Basham, 26, was a second-round pick of the Buffalo Bills (61st overall) back in 2021 out of Wake Forest. Giants general manager Joe Schoen was the Bills’ assistant GM at the time Basham was drafted.

Basham was traded to the Giants before the start of the 2023 season along with Buffalo’s 2025 seventh-round pick in exchange for the Giants’ 2025 sixth-round pick.

Basham has only been active for one of the Giants’ seven games this season. Last year, he recorded 11 tackles in 13 games but the writing was on the wall for him as the Giants are likely to add an offensive tackle to the active roster this week.

Basham could possibly end up back with the Giants on the practice squad if he goes unclaimed off the waiver wire.

Boogie Basham grateful for bond with Giants GM Joe Schoen

Boogie Basham is thrilled to be reunited with New York Giants GM Joe Schoen, who scouting him out of college while with the Buffalo Bills.

The New York Giants traded a 2025 sixth-round draft pick to the Buffalo Bills this week in exchange for defensive end Carlos “Boogie” Basham Jr. and a 2025 seventh-round selection.

The trade was unexpected to many, but not so to the principals involved. Basham and Giants general manager Joe Schoen have a relationship that goes back to before the 2021 NFL draft when Schoen was the assistant general manager of the Bills and Basham was a draft prospect out of Wake Forest.

“He’s the reason I got drafted in Buffalo in the first place,” Basham said of Schoen at his introductory press conference on Wednesday. “To come in here, he wanted me here, so that’s like a little bond we got right there for sure.”

The Bills selected Basham in the second round of the draft that year, 61st overall.

“(Schoen was) one of the first scouts that contacted me, talked to me in the process and he was like, ‘I really want you in Buffalo.’ I knew it was going to happen eventually, just had that bond with him before he left Buffalo,” Basham said.

Now, Basham and Schoen are reunited. The addition of Basham is another step in Schoen and head coach Brian Daboll’s quest to mold the team’s roster according to the vision.

Basham is excited to play for Daboll, who was the Bills’ offensive coordinator when Basham arrived in Buffalo in 2021.

“He always had that mindset that he wanted to be a head coach, even when he was an offensive coordinator,” Basham said of Daboll. “Just a matter of time. I’m thankful that I get the opportunity to play for him. He’s crazy, you know he’s got his little sayings here and there, I’m already used to it, but it’s a great opportunity.”

Basham was a defensive end in Buffalo in a 4-3 alignment. His role will be slightly different in coordinator Wink Martindale’s 3-4 based scheme.

“We’ve got to get him out here and see what he can do,” Daboll said on Wednesday. “He ran a different system, a 4-3 system at Buffalo with his hand in the ground, defensive end. But he’s 275 pounds. He’s a thick body. We’ll ask him to do the same stuff that all of our outside backers do.”

Basham said he’s ready for whatever role the Giants have in store for him.

“For me, it’s going out there for my family, playing for these guys. They don’t really know me yet, but I am definitely a team player, ready to give all I’ve got,” Basham said.

Basham said Martindale had little to say to him this far about his role, except that is will be as a stand-up outside linebacker.

“Just physical, knock back, that’s all they need me to do. The rest of it will come,” Basham said.

He revealed that he has played some outside backer in the past and said it was something he could transition to full-time.

“You’re standing up, so you are a little higher so sometimes you just have to adjust your body a little bit,” he said.

Many will be wondering why the Bills gave up on the promising pass rush specialist so soon. Basham knows he has no control over that. Ha can only look forward.

“I would say just it is what it is, it’s part of the business. No hatred towards them at all. Thankful for the opportunity, but now it’s just all about the Giants. I’m here and ready to play ball,” he said.

Jersey number shuffle: 5 Giants get new digits

Five New York Giants players, including rookie WR Jalin Hyatt, have changed their jersey numbers or been assigned a new number.

As the New York Giants trimmed their roster down to 53 men, a few jersey numbers became available in the process.

On Wednesday, five Giants changed their numbers including some big names.

  • Jalin Hyatt, No. 13
  • Isaiah Simmons, No. 19
  • Deonte Banks, No. 25
  • Gervarrius Owens, No. 39
  • Boogie Basham, No. 45

Hyatt switching from 84 to 13 is an interesting decision given the connection the number has to former Giant Odell Beckham Jr.

Beckham delivered a message to Hyatt shortly after the Giants drafted him, jokingly asking him not to break any of his rookie records. However, Hyatt is looking to start his “own legacy with it.”

Hyatt wore No. 11 at the University of Tennessee.

Meanwhile, Isaiah Simmons was traded to the Giants just one week ago and when he joined the team, open numbers were scarce. Simmons changed from 46 over to 19, which was last worn by Kenny Golladay.

The acquisition of Simmons is something fans are excited about given his fit in Wink Martindale’s defense. Hopefully, Simmons can help fans forget about associating Golladay with number 19 in a hurry.

Rookie Deontae Banks wore 36 all preseason and is now switching over to 25. Banks primarily wore No. 3 in college at Maryland.

2023 seventh-round pick Gervarrius Owens has claimed number 39 after sporting with 31 during the preseason. The change was expected given that Matt Breida also wears number 31.

Boogie Basham, who was acquired on Tuesday, will wear 45 after wearing No. 55 with his former team, the Buffalo Bills.

And this is why you wait to purchase jerseys.

Official compensation in Bills-Giants deal for Boogie Basham

Official compensation in #Bills-#Giants deal for Boogie Basham:

The full details of the Buffalo Bills’ biggest roster cut-down day transaction has been announced.

The Bills traded former second-round pick Boogie Basham to the New York Giants. Those hoping for some good news should turn away.

The initial reports indicated that there was a “swap” of late-round selections at the 2025 NFL draft. That could have simply meant picks on Day 3. That area of the draft is between Round 4 and 7.

But… we hope you didn’t get too excited about.

The Bills announced Basham left with a seventh-round pick. The Giants merely gave up a sixth rounder.

It was reported that other teams had enquired about AJ Epenesa, too.

Like Basham, he is an underperforming former second-round pick by Buffalo. It’s unclear if the Bills simply got a better offer for Basham or they preferred to keep Epenesa.

Regardless, the second round hasn’t been too kind to general manager Brandon Beane once again with the Basham experiment over. He joins the likes of receiver Zay Jones, offensive lineman Cody Ford… and Epenesa. All left something to be desired.

7 takeaways from Bills trading Boogie Basham to Giants

7 takeaways from the #Bills’ decision to trade Boogie Basham to the #Giants:

Amongst the numerous roster moves made by the Buffalo Bills ahead of the NFL’s 4 p.m. roster cut-down deadline, one stands out.

Pass rusher Boogie Basham is now a member of the New York Giants. He was traded by the Bills.

With the dust settled, here are seven takeaways from the decision to deal Basham to the Giants:

Report: Bills received trade interest for AJ Epenesa before Boogie Basham deal

Report: #Bills received trade interest for AJ Epenesa before Boogie Basham deal:

It wasn’t the most shocking thing for the Buffalo Bills to do. It came down to sheer numbers, and in the end, Boogie Basham was the odd-man out.

But he was not the only trade possibility.

Prior to Tuesday’s roster cut-down deadline at 4 p.m. the Bills dealt Basham to the New York Giants. However, AJ Epenesa’s name was tossed around in trade talks as well.

Per ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler, Buffalo received trade offers for Epenesa before Basham’s departure. In the deal, Epenesa sticks with the Bills while Basham heads down to New Jersey.

The overriding reason for the trade came down to numbers in this position group. Von Miller, Greg Rousseau and Leonard Floyd are at the top of it. That left Basham, Epenesa and Shaq Lawson to fill in the bottom part. Then there’s Kameron Cline, who had some moments in preseason too, who could end up on the practice squad.

That’s just simply too many players for one position group.

However, it is worth noting the similarities between Epenesa and Basham.

The Bills selected Basham at the 2021 NFL draft. He was a second-round pick. Like Basham, Epenesa was a second-round draft selection (2020). Both players have really left something to desire in their careers to this point.

One has to wonder what trade packages were offered for both which led to Basham being dealt to the Giants.

Buffalo Bills trade Boogie Basham to New York Giants

The #Bills make a trade:

The Buffalo Bills have made a move on roster cut-down day which was not a player being released or waived. Rather, it was a trade involving former second-round pick Boogie Basham.

According to NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero, Basham has been sent to the New York Giants.

The Bills selected Basham at the 2021 NFL draft. During his career, things never really came together for Basham. Buffalo also has a major logjam of players at the defensive end position which is the main reason the team would have traded the pass rusher.

In return, the Bills and Giants will swap late-round draft selections at the 2025 NFL draft to round out the Basham deal.

In a separate report, ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler indicates that there was interest from other NFL teams in Buffalo’s AJ Epenesa. Like Basham, Epenesa is a second-round draft selection (2020) that has not panned out just yet.

But the overall headline here is the depth in this position.

This pecking order will also be affected Miller’s health status. He remains on the PUP list for now as he continues to rehab his season-ending knee injury from 2022.

The Bills and Giants doing business is clear as well: New York’s head coach and general manager, Brian Daboll and Joe Schoen, were both in Buffalo when Basham was drafted by the team. The two teams have multiple overlapping players, especially players who followed Daboll and Schoen to the Giants after their time in western New York.

Keep tabs on Bills Wire throughout roster cut-down day for all updates.

Giants acquire DE Boogie Basham from Bills

The New York Giants have acquired defensive end Boogie Basham in a trade with the Buffalo Bills.

New York Giants general manager Joe Schoen never shies away from a little wheeling and dealing and on Tuesday morning, he did it again.

With hours remaining until the 53-man roster cutdown deadline, Schoen and the Giants acquired defensive end Boogie Basham from the Buffalo Bills.

In exchange for Basham, the Giants and Bills agreed to swap late-round picks in 2025. Buffalo will get a sixth-round pick and New York will receive a seventh-round pick.

The 25-year-old Basham was a second-round pick in the 2021 NFL draft and is someone Schoen is obviously familiar with from his time in Buffalo.

Here is what NFL draft analyst Lance Zierlein had to say about Basham ahead of the 2021 draft:

Three-year starter at defensive end with burly frame, heavy hands and an ability to take on physical rigors of the NFL. His rush attack is more technical and explosive, using active hands, spin counters and a thoughtful approach. His lack of suddenness and edge speed could get him pegged as an early-down end while moving inside to become an interior rusher on passing downs. He needs to become comfortable handling the heavy lifting as a run defender as he’s much more likely to be a worker bee than playmaker in that regard. He’s strong and plays heavy at the point of attack with leverage to sit down and battle for his space of turf. He’s unlikely to produce headline-making production, but should be a good pro.

In 23 career games, the 6-foot-3, 281-pound Basham has recorded 37 tackles (20 solo, five for a loss), one fumble recovery, eight QB hits, 4.5 sacks and one interception.

Last season, Basham earned an overall grade of 66.4 courtesy of Pro Football Focus. He was also given a pass rush grade of 68.8.

With the Giants still relatively thin along the edge, Basham provides some depth but it may come at the expense of a player like Oshane Ximines.
