Seahawks Russell Wilson, Bobby Wagner named Pro Bowl starters

Seattle Seahawks quarterback Russell Wilson and linebacker Bobby Wagner were both named to the Pro Bowl for the third consecutive year.

The 2020 NFL Pro Bowl rosters were announced on Tuesday night, and two Seattle Seahawks made the cut as starters for the NFC squad.

Quarterback Russell Wilson and linebacker Bobby Wagner will both be making their sixth career Pro Bowl appearances.

Wilson has already proven himself worthy of the mega-contract extension he signed over the offseason, putting together an MVP campaign through 14 games. He’s completed 300 passes for 3,708 yards with an excellent 28-to-five touchdown-to-interception ratio.

While he finished second behind Lamar Jackson of the Ravens in fan voting, it’s clear Wilson is among the best quarterbacks in the NFL, and his third consecutive Pro Bowl nod is even more proof of that.

Wagner, also fresh off a contract extension, already has 139 combined tackles this season – topping last year’s mark and on pace to break his career-high of 168, set in 2016. All set to make his sixth consecutive Pro Bowl appearance and potentially his fourth consecutive year as an All-Pro, Wagner is continuing to cement himself as the best linebacker of his era, and a future Hall of Famer.

The Seahawks also had seven players selected as alternates: wide receiver Tyler Lockett, tackle Duane Brown, running back Chris Carson, defensive end Jadeveon Clowney, safety Quandre Diggs, cornerback Shaquill Griffin and guard Mike Iupati.

Punter Michael Dickson, notably, was not selected despite leading the NFC in fan voting at the punter position.

The 2020 Pro Bowl will be played on Sunday, Jan. 26, 2020 and televised live on ESPN at noon PT from Camping World Stadium in Orlando, Fla.

3 Seahawks among positional leaders in Pro Bowl fan vote

The Seahawks have three players, Russell Wilson, Michael Dickson and Bobby Wagner, among the leading vote getters in the Pro Bowl fan vote.

The Seattle Seahawks will almost certainly have a handful of players represented at the Pro Bowl again this year, which will be held in Orlando the week before the Super Bowl.

The rosters are set to be announced on Tuesday, December 17 at 5:00 p.m. PT, but the results of the fan voting – which accounts for one-third of the election process – are in, and three Seahawks are polling well.

Russell Wilson is second among NFC quarterbacks, behind Lamar Jackson of the Ravens, while linebacker Bobby Wagner and punter Michael Dickson are tops at their respective positions.

While those three are almost certainly going to be extended Pro Bowl invitations for the second year in a row, the Seahawks have a handful of other players who could hear their name called as well.

Running back Chris Carson is approaching 1,200 rushing yards on the season, ranking fourth in the NFL, and should be named to the team this year after being an alternate last year.

Tyler Lockett is nearing the 1,000 yard marker, and although his performance has waned in the past few weeks thanks to an injury and a bout with the flu, he still seems like an option for the roster.

Finally, a few other defensive players (Jadeveon Clowney, Bradley McDougald, Shaquill Griffin) are strong candidates, at the very least as alternates.

Of course, the Seahawks have their sights set on a Super Bowl berth, which would cause each of their Pro Bowlers to decline their invitation while they get ready for the big game.

Quandre Diggs not expected to play Week 16 against Cardinals

Seattle Seahawks coach Pete Carroll confirmed that safety Quandre Diggs has a high-ankle injury, and his status for Week 16 is in jeopardy.

The Seattle Seahawks went into Sunday’s game against the Carolina Panthers down four defensive starters, and they left the game down two more – Bobby Wagner and Quandre Diggs – who both suffered sprained ankles in the team’s Week 15 victory.

Wagner’s injury seems to be minor, but Diggs may not have gotten as lucky.

Carroll confirmed on 710 ESPN Monday morning that Diggs suffered a high ankle sprain and said they don’t know exactly how long he will be out.

“Quandre, he had a high-ankle shot there, so we’re gonna have to see how that goes and how he responds to it,” Carroll said on 710 ESPN’s Pete Carroll show Monday morning. “We don’t know at this point. Some of these injuries are really bad and sometimes guys have bounced right back. We don’t know yet.”

Diggs has been a huge addition to Seattle’s defense, recording three interceptions, one for a touchdown, as well as 21 combined tackles and one forced fumble in five games since coming over in a trade from the Lions.

He has been Seattle’s highest performer in the secondary, and his play has elevated the play of Bradley McDougald as well.

Seattle will likely turn to Lano Hill and potentially Marquise Blair to replace Diggs for as long as he is out, and updates on his status will be available throughout the week.

After ankle sprain scare, Bobby Wagner should be available Sunday

Seattle Seahawks linebacker Bobby Wagner sprained his ankle Week 15 in Carolina but does not believe it will be a factor going forward.

Seattle Seahawks linebacker Bobby Wagner gave fans quite a scare Week 15 in Carolina when he went down on the field after a play in the fourth quarter. Able to walk off to sidelines under his own power, Wagner was then held out for the remainder of the ball game.

“I definitely was scared, but I’m good,” Wagner told reporters in the locker room. “The doctor said that if everybody goes out and votes for me for Man of the Year that it will be better. That’s what he said.”

After the win, coach Pete Carroll confirmed Wagner had sprained his ankle.

“I felt like I probably slipped a little, but then he hit me in my side and my back,” Wagner explained. “My leg kind of got caught underneath. I’ll be fine.”

Carroll provided an update on Wagner’s status during his Monday morning radio show on 710 ESPN Seattle.

“Bobby is going to try to ignore this as an injury,” Carroll said. “He doesn’t think it’s going to be a factor, but we’ll see.”

Quandre Diggs, however, may not be as fortunate. Carroll confirmed the safety suffered a high ankle sprain and could be sidelined for the near future.

Snap counts and playtime percentages: Seahawks at Panthers

Snap counts and playtime percentages from the Seattle Seahawks Week 15 win over the Carolina Panthers.

The Seattle Seahawks defense was truly tested Week 15 with four starters out for the matchup. Defensive ends Jadeveon Clowney and Ziggy Ansah, linebacker Mychal Kendricks and cornerback Shaquill Griffin were all inactive on Sunday.

To make matters worse, three more defenders were injured later in the contest, including safety Quandre Diggs and linebacker Bobby Wagner, who both succumbed to sprained ankles and did not return to the game.

“Yeah, we didn’t have Clowney, we didn’t have Shaq, we didn’t have Ziggy out there today – Mychal Kendricks not out there,” coach Pete Carroll said after the win. “I think that’s a great statement for us to go out and win a football game with the other guys playing for us. Really proud of those guys. And it’s great for us, again. It gets them closer to helping us when we need it down the stretch. They’re all going to have to contribute. Everybody plays on our team, so they’re going to have to, so hopefully we’ll get better.”

Here’s a look at the snap counts and playtime percentages for both the Seahawks and the Panthers.

5 takeaways from Seattle’s 30-24 road victory over Carolina

The Seattle Seahawks improved to 11-3 by defeating the Carolina Panthers by a score of 30-24. Here are five takeaways from the game.

The Seattle Seahawks (11-3) defeated the Carolina Panthers (5-9) on the road by a score of 30-24, clinching the best road record in franchise history at 7-1 and a playoff berth virtue of the Rams falling to the Cowboys on Sunday. The Seahawks control their own destiny as they return home for the final two games of the regular season. Here are a few takeaways from the Week 15 win.

Russell Wilson returns to form

After throwing four touchdowns to four interceptions over as many games, Wilson returned to his form over the first nine weeks, throwing for 286 yards, two touchdowns, and no interceptions. He also had a perfect passer rating through the first half. Wilson was poised, decisive and kept mistakes to a minimum. The Seahawks will need this kind of production from Wilson consistently if they wish to make a deep postseason run. A solid day for Seattle’s treasured franchise quarterback.

Veteran linebackers rack up interceptions

K.J. Wright recorded two interceptions, while Bobby Wagner had another. Whenever Seattle’s two veteran LBs had an opportunity to make a play, they made the most of it. The Seahawks gave the ball right back to Carolina after Wright’s first pick but turned his second one into points with a field goal. Wagner’s interception was athletic, worthy of the highlight reel, and prevented the Panthers from scoring points before halftime. Wagner suffered an ankle injury late and did not return, but walked off the field under his own power. A great day for the vets.

Chris Carson steps up in Rashaad Penny’s absence

After Rashaad Penny’s unexpected production over the past few weeks and his devastating ACL tear, Chris Carson was expected to carry the load as the workhorse back. He did that with superb ability this week against the Panthers’ porous run defense, rushing for 133 yards and two touchdowns, the second of which came on a fourth and 1 in a crucial moment in the game. He was perhaps the player of the game for the Seahawks, picking up first downs when they needed him to and never losing grip of the football. This performance was exactly what Carson and the team needed.

Tyler Lockett is healthy again

It is safe to say that Lockett is healthier than he was in the past three weeks. It showed on the field, as he recorded eight receptions for 120 yards and a touchdown, breaking his career-high of 965 receiving yards last year. He said in his postgame interview that he still feels a little sick from the flu, but he certainly looks better. He is knocking on the door of 1,000 receiving yards for the season, needing just six yards to reach the mark. If he accomplishes this, he will be the first Seattle receiver to do so since Doug Baldwin in 2016. Lockett looks to be returning to peak form on his road to 100% recovery, which is a very good thing for Seattle.

The Seahawks cannot blow many teams out

Seattle has only blown out an opponent once this year, the Cardinals on the road in Week 4. Once again, the Seahawks built up a sizable lead and found a way to nearly squander it. This team always keeps games competitive whether they are winning or losing. Pete Carroll loves to burn out the clock, but this tactic often leads to three-and-outs and gives the opposing team opportunities to play catch-up, which may eventually bite Seattle if not careful. It says something about the Seahawks’ resilience as they keep finding ways to win . . . but they have made many games closer than they should be on paper.

4 Studs and 2 duds as Seahawks beat Panthers 30-24 in Week 15

The Seahawks were able to advance to 11-3 on the year after beating the Panthers in Week 15 – here are the studs and duds from the contest.

The Seattle Seahawks never make it easy on themselves or their fans, do they? For the 10th time in their 11 wins, the Seahawks snaked away with yet another one-score victory. Seattle led 30-10 in the fourth quarter but walked away with a narrow 30-24 win.

Seattle entered Carolina banged up on defense and left worse off with injuries to Quandre Diggs, Delano Hill, and Bobby Wagner. However, on the bright side, Sunday’s win was historic for the Seahawks.

Head coach Pete Carroll earned his 100th victory with the Seahawks, as the team improved to 11 wins for the first time since 2014 and set a franchise record with seven wins on the road.

Here are the four studs and two duds in yet another of Seattle’s nail-biting victories.

Seahawks Quandre Diggs, Bobby Wagner suffer ankle sprains in Carolina

Coach Pete Carroll provided a number of injury updates during his postgame press conference and confirmed both Diggs and Wagner suffered ankle sprains.

The Seattle Seahawks took the field Week 15 in Carolina down four defensive starters, as defensive ends Ziggy Ansah and Jadeveon Clowney, linebacker Mychal Kendricks and cornerback Shaquill Griffin were all inactive due to injuries.

Despite the win, things got even worse for Seattle in the health department as the game progressed with three more defenders sustaining injuries throughout the matchup. Safety Quandre Diggs was the first to leave with an ankle injury, linebacker Bobby Wagner was next – also with a sore ankle – and finally, safety Lano Hill appeared to get banged up in the fourth quarter.

Coach Pete Carroll provided a number of injury updates during his postgame press conference and confirmed both Diggs and Wagner suffered ankle sprains.

“He sprained his ankle a little,” Carroll said of Wagner. “We don’t know how bad it was – he was pretty good getting off the field today.” Carroll did say Wagner was not cleared to return to the game.

As for Diggs, it appears his injury could possibly linger a bit longer.

“Quandre sprained his ankle also and he looks a little more serious than Bobby did,” Carroll explained. “That would be a big loss if we can’t get him to get back next week. He’s been playing great football for us.”

Carroll should have further updates on both injured players Monday afternoon after both are checked out more thoroughly by the Seahawks’ medical staff.

Watch: Panthers QB Kyle Allen throws another devastating interception

Carolina trails 20-7 at halftime.

The Panthers had a chance to cut into the Seahawks’ lead before the half, but another costly turnover ended that hope. Watch quarterback Kyle Allen throw another bad interception, his 13th of the season. It’s an admittedly sharp play by Bobby Wagner, but Allen appeared to stare down wide receiver Chris Hogan and then released the ball too late.

There’s no point in dragging Allen, anymore. This is who he is. Rookie QB Will Grier deserves a chance to prove he can do better, whether it’s in the second half or next week against the Colts.

Carolina trails 20-7 at halftime.

Shaquem Griffin just getting into rhythm as pass rusher

Seattle Seahawks edge rusher Shaquem Griffin is just getting started as a pass rusher, despite immediate results.

The Seattle Seahawks decided a few weeks ago to unleash Shaquem Griffin, who at the time was contributing only on the special teams, as an edge rusher in pass rushing situations.

The results have been excellent, as Griffin’s speed off the edge and experience getting to the quarterback from his time at UCF have made him a formidable presence on the defensive side of the ball.

Griffin has racked up three quarterback hits in his limited role off the edge in the last four games, and according to teammates, he’s only just getting started.

“When he got to the league and you saw him pass rush for the first time, you knew he had the ability to do that,” linebacker Bobby Wagner said of Griffin on Thursday. “We had him off the ball for a while, and the moment he got back to being on the ball, you see the potential that he has. He’s so quick, and he’s able to get around people, and he’s able to use his speed to get to the quarterback. I think he’s just getting into his rhythm. It’s going to be fun to see what he does.”

Griffin excelled as a pass rusher in college, but his lack of size is what kept him on the special teams and as a backup outside linebacker for the first 1.5 years of his NFL career.

Eventually though, his work in practice and the relative lack of pass rush the rest of the team was generating gave Pete Carroll the idea to let him try rushing in games, and while he hasn’t posted huge numbers it is evident he has given this unit a much-needed boost down the stretch.

Griffin will be counted on again on Sunday, when the Seahawks take on the Panthers in North Carolina starting at 10:00 a.m. PT.
