Giants fall to Jets in preseason finale as injuries pile up

The New York Giants dropped their preseason finale to the New York Jets and lost several players to injury in the process.

The New York Giants faced off against the New York Jets on Saturday night at MetLife Stadium in the final preseason game for both teams.

The game held significance in several ways. It was the Jets debut for superstar quarterback Aaron Rodgers and the final game for many young hopefuls on both sides who are competing for roster spots to strut their stuff as final cuts are due Tuesday afternoon.

The Giants, as the ‘home’ team, wore their blue jerseys while the Jets wore all white. Two veterans — wide receiver Sterling Shepard and linebacker Jihad Ward — served as game captains for Big Blue.

Gametime temperature was a balmy 84 degrees with 49 percent humidity and a slight wind of six miles per hour.

Should Giants attempt to trade safety Bobby McCain?

Bleacher Report suggests that the New York Giants trade Bobby McCain to the Las Vegas Raiders prior to the start of the 2023 NFL season.

NFL teams across the league are constantly looking for ways to improve. Scouting prospects is a 24/7/365 job. Players continually work to be the best they can be, which creates an ever-changing landscape.

As the 2023 NFL season opener nears, Bleacher Report suggested one trade that each NFL team should propose before the season starts.

When it came to the Giants, Alex Ballentine suggested they trade safety Bobby McCain to the Las Vegas Raiders.

The New York Giants signed Bobby McCain to a one-year deal this offseason. The plan was most likely to have McCain replace Julian Love, who left for the Seattle Seahawks in free agency.

But plans change, and McCain might have to sweat out making the roster if he remains with the Giants. That’s because of the play of seventh-round rookie pick Gervarrius Owens.

Owens has been a pleasant surprise since the Giants selected him. He works hard in practice, had a pass breakup in the first preseason game and disrupted the Carolina Panthers’ offense during the second preseason game, recording seven tackles.

There’s no reason to think Owens won’t make the cut, which means someone else has to go.

The Raiders, on the other hand, could use an insurance policy if Tre’Von Moehrig can’t step up in Year 3. McCain could slot in alongside free-agent addition Marcus Epps.

Right now, there’s no indication that the Giants plan to trade or cut McCain. This is purely speculation, and the Giants’ history with safeties suggests that depth is important at the position.

Giants stock report: Risers, fallers after two weeks of training camp

Whose stock is rising and whose is falling after two weeks of New York Giants training camp?

The New York Giants are well into their 2023 training camp and several players have shone while others have not. And while there’s still plenty of time left and things are subject to change, a story is beginning to take shape.

Here is a quick list of “risers” and “fallers” since camp began two weeks ago.

Giants’ Bobby McCain anxious to ‘whoop’ Commanders in 2023

New York Giants safety Bobby McCain says he still has love for the Washington Commanders but looks forward to “whooping” them in 2023.

New York Giants safety Bobby McCain is eager to “whoop” division rival Washington Commanders.

The Giants signed the former Miami Dolphins and Washington safety to a one-year, $1,317,500 deal in free agency. McCain was coming off of a bit of a down year in 2022 where he failed to notch an interception and only recorded five passes defensed.

This was a drop off from the year before where he recorded four interceptions (two of them coming against Big Blue) and nine passes defensed. This likely led to him not being re-signed by Washington, motivating him to want to destroy them.

McCain could not hold back his excitement on facing his former employers.

“I believe they might change the name now, I don’t know — I don’t care. I appreciate my time there, I appreciate the guys there, I’ve still got love for them. But we’re definitely going to whoop their (expletive),” McCain told NJ Advance Media.

New York has been pretty successful in the past five years in doing exactly that as they have a record of 6-3-1 against Washington during that span. Big Blue will hope that can continue with the help of McCain.

Giants minicamp: Notes, videos and highlights from Day 1

News, notes, highlights and a few videos from Day 1 of the New York Giants’ 2023 mandatory minicamp.

After canceling their final two practices of organized team activities (OTAs) due to poor air quality, the New York Giants were back at it on Tuesday. This time for their mandatory two-day minicamp.

Running back Saquon Barkley, who has not yet signed his franchise tender, is not permitted to take part in team-related activities and was not in attendance per NFL rules. He will not be fined for his absence.

On the schedule were press conferences with the team’s defensive assistants, head coach Brian Daboll and assistant general manager Brandon Brown. Select players also spoke with members of the media following a two-hour practice.

Here’s a look at some notes, highlights and videos from Day 1.

What free agents might Commanders like to sign?

Will the Commanders add any veteran free agents before training camp?

The free agency signing surge that occurs annually in March has passed, and now the annual April draft as well. So, whom will the Commanders sign now?

The value of free agents has flattened out, there will be players released as well, a result of draft choices having been made, making many veterans more expendable.

Take the 2021 offseason for example. Washington had finished atop the NFC East at 7-9 in the 2020 season, bowing out to the Tampa Bay Bucs in the playoffs.

Following the free agency wave and the draft, the “Football Team” in mid-May signed offensive tackle Charles Leno, who had been waived by the Bears.

Two days later, Washington signed defensive back Bobby McCain who had been released by the Miami Dolphins. The following week the team announced the signing of tight end Ricky Seals-Jones.

The moves were designed to build roster depth, and strengthen the team at spots needing to be addressed.

Following the 2021 season, the free agency signing period, and the 2022 draft, Washington in May signed veterans Trai Turner and Alex Erickson.

Consequently, this 2023 offseason, the Commanders will again be looking for a few roster spots they can bolster by signing a few inexpensive veterans.

Will they pursue and sign an offensive tackle?

Remember Eric Fisher who played for the Chiefs in Eric Bieniemy’s offense? The Dolphins released Fisher in March, and he has yet to sign with a team. Would they sign George Fant or Brandon Shell?

With J.D. McKissic gone, would the Commanders sign Kenyan Drake, Myles Gaskin, or Kareem Hunt?

Perhaps they would like to add one more edge rusher? Would they sign Kyle Van Noy, Al-Quadin Muhammad, or Trey Flowers?

The Commanders most likely want to see their rookies and undrafted players at next week’s rookie minicamp before making any veteran signings.

Giants announce new jersey numbers, Parris Campbell will wear No. 0

The New York Giants announced several new jersey numbers this week including WR Parris Campbell, who will wear No. 0.

The New York Giants announced new jersey numbers for several of their recent free-agent acquisitions on Wednesday. They also announced an in-house jersey number change.

Here’s a quick look at which Giants will wear what number in 2023.

Bobby McCain could tell ‘things were different’ with 2022 Giants

Safety Bobby McCain noticed a considerable difference with the New York Giants in 2022 compared to years past.

The success of the 2022 New York Giants, which resulted in a playoff appearance and a postseason win, has free agents and even some of the Giants’ potential draft targets taking notice.

The Giants recently signed defensive back Bobby McCain, who is the most recent to comment on the team’s success from last season.

“Yes, definitely competitive games. We knew the games were going to be tough every time we played the Giants, especially this past year. You could tell things were a little bit different,” McCain told reporters on Thursday. “Especially this past year, things were definitely different. I’m excited to just be here and compete. You can feel the competitive nature when you walk in the building, so I’m just excited to be here.

“It’s kind of just the energy the guys were playing with, the play calling. It just felt different playing from two years prior.”

McCain spent the last two seasons with the division rival Washington Commanders so it’s telling from someone playing the Giants twice each of the last two years.

Clearly, the Giants have the right head coach in place, which seemed to be a problem with each of the last three head coaches.

Headed into free agency, Bobby Okereke told his agent that the Giants were his preferred destination.

Parris Campbell came over from the Indianapolis Colts, just like Okereke. Campbell praised the Giants, saying they were trending in the right direction and credited his signing to a conversation with head coach Brian Daboll.

As recently as this week, projected first-round pick Jaxon Smith-Njigba, who met had dinner with the Giants, talked about Big Blue being on the rise.

Like the others, McCain sees the rising stock of the Giants.

Clearly, Joe Schoen and Daboll have etched a desirable and noticeable culture change within the organization.

Giants signed Bobby McCain signed to play safety

Bobby McCain says he will play safety, not cornerback, with the New York Giants in 2023.

The New York Giants brought in Bobby McCain from the rival Washington Commanders to play safety.

McCain will be replacing Julian Love, who started 32 games at safety for New York over the last four years recording 291 tackles and five interceptions.

McCain is a tenured veteran in the league who has played all over the defensive backfield. However, when he comes to East Rutherford he will be playing exclusively safety.

“I’ll be playing safety here. I’ll be looking to be the guy. I’m coming here to play. I’m coming here to compete. And I’m coming here to win,” McCain told reporters on Thursday.

Over the last four seasons, McCain transitioned to safety where he started in 55 games for the Miami Dolphins and Commanders, recording 159 solo tackles, 22 passes defended, and seven interceptions.

However, Washington moved McCain to slot cornerback last season and many felt he excelled at the position.

McCain will be joining a New York defense that outperformed expectations in 2022. He will pair up with safety Xavier McKinney, who McCain is excited to play with. He thinks the duo will be able to play well with one another and form a lasting connection.

“There are things that we can both help each other with — whether it’s via on the field, via off the field. I know he’s a really good player,” McCain said. “He’s going to continue being a good player in this league. And just us being able to communicate, we’ve already been in contact and been in touch. And us being able to communicate will help each other and it’ll help us go a long way.”
