Bo Nix runs away from Penix with the Pac-12 QB rankings title

Oregon quarterback Bo Nix is the top-ranked QB in the Pac-12 with his elite play all season long.

USC’s Caleb Williams won the PFF.com Pac-12 quarterback rankings a year ago and turned that into a Heisman Trophy. Now Oregon’s Bo Nix is attempting to make it a repeat performance in the last year of the Conference of Champions.

The Trojans’ lackluster second half cost Williams games and his ranking kept going down, but the same couldn’t be said for Nix or Washington’s Michael Penix. They proved week in and week out that they were the top two quarterbacks in the Pac-12 and both should earn a trip to New York for the Heisman ceremonies.

As it should be, Nix and Penix will face each other on Friday for the last Pac-12 championship with the winner most likely claiming the Heisman.

Besides the QBs out of the Northwest, the Pac-12 had its share of great quarterback play all season long. Here’s the final rankings for the 2023 season.

Instant Reactions: Ducks down Arizona hex with massive win vs. ASU

With 6 TDs from Bo Nix and a dominant defensive performance, the Ducks once again blow out their opponent in a 49-13 win over ASU.

Anyone would be hard-pressed to name a better college quarterback right now.

Oregon’s Bo Nix might be the leading contender for the Heisman Trophy after throwing for nearly 400 yards and six touchdowns in one half of play. The Ducks scored on their first six possessions, took a 42-0 halftime lead to eventually take a 49-13 rout over Arizona State.

In the midst of all the points scored, Troy Franklin became the program’s leading all-time receiver with 23 career touchdowns, 13 this season, also a record and two in this game. He wound up with eight catches for 128 yards.

Nix’s six scores through the was also a personal best. He now has 35 touchdowns and just two interceptions for the season.

Now the Ducks will prepare for the regular season finale, the Civil War with Oregon State on Friday with a trip to the Pac-12 title game on the line.

Column: Even Dan Lanning can’t deny the Heisman buzz, but it doesn’t change a thing for Ducks

Bo Nix has a great shot to potentially win the Heisman Trophy this year, but it doesn’t impact the Ducks’ drive for a national championship.

On Saturday night after the No. 6 Oregon Ducks’ 36-27 win over the USC Trojans, Dan Lanning sat down for his post-game press conference and said something that he hadn’t said before this season.

It made my ears perk up in the moment. In the days since, I’ve combed through his hours of interviews since the start of training camp and confirmed what I thought to be true the instant he uttered that word as the clock struck midnight on Saturday.

“I think that’s a Heisman-worthy performance from Bo,” Lanning said of his QB who just threw for 412 yards and 4 touchdowns in a decisive win.

While the Oregon head coach has endlessly propped up his quarterback all season long, time after time calling him the best QB in the nation and deploring anyone who thought otherwise, this was the first time he mentioned the Heisman Trophy. It no longer was “I think anybody who’s watching Bo right now knows he’s playing at a really high level,” but rather a sentiment that could be translated to, “Our quarterback deserves to be holding that bronze statue in a month’s time.”

While that may not seem like a meaningful occurrence, it caught my ear because it goes against what Lanning has done during his time in Eugene. He’s not one to focus on the future or concern himself and the team with accolades off the field. Routinely, you’ll hear him state that “the next game is the most important game” rather than look more than a week down the road to discuss rematches, playoffs, or anything of the ilk. Those types of conversations are fun for fans and media members to talk about, but they are often viewed as distractions for teams who have business to take care of.

On Saturday night, Lanning wasn’t afraid to talk about those accolades, though, and look into the future for a brief second. I followed up on Monday night and asked about how he strikes that balance, still keeping a keen focus on the right here, right now, while also knowing that there are some historic things at play when it comes to what his team’s leader is doing on the field.

“Well, Bo’s earned that attention, and Bo would be the first one sitting up here to tell you that he’s earned that attention because of the things that his teammates have done,” Lanning said. “Those things come to teams that are having a lot of success. I think you always go back and look at teams that have you know, Heisman winners, and they’ve done well throughout the season. They’ve been competing for an opportunity for championships within the year.”

At the moment, Nix is the betting favorite to win the Heisman Trophy after his 4-TD performance over USC, having just recently passed Washington QB Michael Penix Jr. in the race. Projecting ahead, you can assume that, barring a cataclysmic downfall in the final two weeks of the season, Nix has already guaranteed his seat in New York for the early December ceremony. Should the Ducks close out the regular season with a par of wins, and then grab a victory in the Pac-12 Championship game on December 1st, there is a really strong chance he ends up becoming the second Oregon Duck in school history to hoist that bronze statue.

If you want further proof that Nix is playing at the Heisman caliber, then it becomes clear when comparing his stats to those of Marcus Mariota during his 2014 Heisman season. Through 10 games, Nix has 3,135 yards, 34 TD and 2 INT, while Mariota racked up 2,780 yards, 37 TD, and 2 INT through the first 10 games of that 2014 season.

To Lanning, that’s all well and good. It’s more than deserved if you ask him. But it doesn’t do a damn thing to change “the main thing,” as he would say.

“If you made Bo pick what he could have, I promise you the first thing he wants is a championship,” Lanning said. “We know that the rest will kind of take care of itself.”

The Heisman will be handed out long before any national championships are decided, but if Oregon’s QB can make it so the Ducks are able to compete for one with a spot in the College Football Playoff, then Lanning is right — the rest will sort itself out.

If the Ducks wake up on the morning of December 2 with a 2023 Pac-12 Championship Trophy in their possession, and an almost guaranteed spot in the playoff, then the writing is on the wall. It might not just be time to make room in the Hatfield-Dowling Complex trophy case for another conference title trophy.

Maybe they ought to start drawing up plans for a spot next to Marcus.

Bo Nix becomes heavy favorites to win Heisman Trophy after 4 TD performance in Week 11

Bo Nix becomes heavy favorites to win Heisman Trophy after 4 TD performance in Week 11

A couple of weeks ago, we knew Oregon Ducks’ quarterback Bo Nix was sitting in a good spot when it came to the Heisman Trophy.

After the big win over the Utah Utes, Nix had jumped back into the conversation at the sportsbooks. With games against California and USC coming up — a pair of defenses that didn’t pose much of a threat — it seemed the opportunity was there for the fifth-year QB to boost his resume.

We told you to buy in on his odds if you hadn’t already, even though they dropped from plus-1300 to plus-600 after the statement win. I hope you listened because the value has completely left when it comes to placing a wager.

After four touchdowns and more than 400 yards passing against USC, Nix is now the heavy favorite to win the award, surpassing both Michael Penix Jr. and J.J. McCarthy. The latter has completely fallen off the board.

Take a look at where Nix’s odds now stand in comparison to the rest of the candidates:

Bo Nix joins dead heat at top of Heisman Trophy odds after statement win

The Heisman race is getting crowded at the top, but Oregon’s Bo Nix is right in the thick of it.

We’re now getting set to turn our calendar over to November, which means that in the world of college football, it’s gut-check time.

While the first 9 weeks of the season were filled with non-conference cupcakes for most teams and a feeling-out period for others, the true contenders separate themselves once we get into November. Spots in conference championship games are put on the line, and College Football Playoff resumes are built as well.

Heisman Trophy resumes also start to be thrown under the microscope.

With just over a month until the ultimate player-recognition award is handed out, the top athletes in the nation are continuing to jockey for position and try to land a seat in New York City for the ceremony at the start of December. Based on their play now, and their continued success over the next month, the ultimate individual achievement in college football can be won or lost.

It’s safe to say that there is a lot riding on these next few weeks for the top players in the nation. As we continue to watch while this thing winds down, here’s a look at the latest betting odds from FanDuel Sportsbook on the award.

Bo Nix Heisman buzz quickly grows after signature win at No. 13 Utah

Bo Nix’s consistency might win out over having a “Heisman Moment” when it comes to the most prestigious award in college football.

The picture of who’s in the running to win the Heisman Trophy is becoming more clear as the college football season heads into November. Oregon quarterback Bo Nix has made himself a legitimate contender after the Ducks’ 35-6 road win over No. 13 Utah.

Voters usually look for that one “Heisman Moment” for the eventual winner, this may be the year where that moment doesn’t come, but instead, consistency over the entire regular season wins out and becomes that moment unto itself.

And while Nix still has time to generate that moment, his consistency hasn’t been matched by other so-called contenders. He hasn’t had any games where he has thrown for under 245 yards and two touchdowns. Oregon still has contests with USC, Oregon State, and possibly Washington once again.

It always helps to have your coach in your corner and Nix definitely has Dan Lanning as a pretty good spokesman.

“I’m going to say it again, Bo Nix is the best quarterback in the nation just to be really clear. I don’t think there’s any doubt about it,” the Oregon second-year coach said. “It’s not just the plays he makes on the field … I think a lot of people talk about chasing stats and all these things, this guy just plays consistently. He gets us in the right calls, he comes to the sideline and helps us through adjustments. He tells us what he sees. He’s an unbelievable person. When you have a good team like we have, and we have a quarterback like we have, that’s a special recipe for success.”

Perhaps more important is to have your fellow teammates have your back and sing your praises. Center Jackson Powers-Johnson says Nix is just one of those special players.

“He’s great. I went up to him and gave him a hug and said ‘thank you’,” Powers-Johnson said. “We (the offensive line) do our part to make the offense go, but I’m going to give all the credit to Bo. He’s an amazing quarterback, an amazing person and an amazing leader. Hopefully there’s more media talk for Heisman because he deserves it.”

Like a good player and overall person, Nix is downplaying the Heisman talk and for him, it’s all about the team.

“I think that’s something that comes with playing really good team football and so my ultimate goal is to do whatever I can to win games. The guys in the locker room know that I want to win a championship,” Nix said. “We’re gonna do everything we can to go back to work on Monday to do that because we got it right in front of us. We can really feel it. That’s all we want to take care of. So all of this really is just gonna be chattering and talking noise, and we got to make sure that we don’t get distracted by it, myself included, and I’m just gonna go to work to win games.”

Oregon has done its share of winning games, going 7-1 overall and California is next on the schedule where Nix might have that Heisman moment. More likely, however, he’ll complete 75 percent of his passes, throw for 285 yards and three or four touchdowns.

Bo Nix sees another massive bump in Heisman odds; Caleb Williams falls off the map

Oregon Ducks quarterback Bo Nix has seen another big boost in his Heisman Trophy odds after a great game against Washington State.

In my weekly column, I preached patience for fans of the Oregon Ducks as they dive into the stretch run of the season with eyes on the Pac-12 Championship and a potential spot in the College Football Playoff.

It’s become clear that patience is also needed when it comes to Bo Nix and the Heisman Trophy.

[lawrence-related id=50639]

Early in the year, the Oregon Ducks’ quarterback was among the upper-middle tier of Heisman candidates, and he backed that up with very solid stats, leading the nation in completion percentage and among the top players in terms of TD-to-interception ratio.

After the Ducks dropped a game against the Washington Huskies, though, Nix’s odds plummeted, despite him having great stats in the performance.

Unsurprisingly, we just needed to exercise some patience and wait for Nix’s odds to jump back up

With another 3 total TD and zero turnover game last weekend against the Washington State Cougars, Nix is once again near the top of the Heisman board, and if he can keep it up going forward through Oregon’s tough schedule, there should be very little doubt that he will be in New York for the ceremony in December.

Here’s where the full Heisman odds stand after Week 8 of the season:

When it comes to stakes, they don’t get much higher in a regular season game than we will see on Saturday in the showdown between No. 8 Oregon Ducks and No. 7 Washington Huskies.

A pair of Pac-12 title contenders, a pair of College Football Playoff contenders, and a pair of two favorites to win the Heisman Trophy in 2023 will be squaring off in Seattle. ESPN’s College GameDay will be in town, a national audience that will likely get nearly 10 million viewers will tune in, and a pair of the best teams in the nation will face their biggest tests of the season thus far.

The two players who will likely garner most of the attention are the quarterbacks on each side of the ball — Bo Nix and Michael Penix Jr. So how much hype is there for them, and what are the early expectations? To get that answer, look no further than where they rank in the latest odds to win the Heisman Trophy, according to FanDuel Sports Book:

Bo Nix jumps into top three of Heisman Trophy odds after 4 TD game in Week 5

Nearly midway through the 2023 season, Bo Nix has found his way into the top three of Heisman betting odds.

There was a lot of buzz surrounding Bo Nix and a potential Heisman Trophy run before the start of the 2023 season. With the billboards that were going up in New York City and down in Dallas, Nix was the talk of the town and expected to be among the leaders of the Heisman race from start to finish.

Once the season started, Nix continually put up good numbers, but his Heisman buzz cooled off a bit, likely because of the emergence of both Washington QB Michael Penix Jr. and Colorado QB Shedeur Sanders.

Eventually, though, we knew Nix would get back into the conversation.

After a 4-touchdown performance in Week 5 against the Stanford Cardinal, it appears that the Oregon QB is right back in the middle of the race rather than lingering on the outskirts. He is now among the favorites to win the award once again, going into an incredibly important stretch of games that will see the Ducks take on the No. 7 Washington Huskies, No. 13 Washington State Cougars, and No. 18 Utah Utes.

Here’s a look at where Nix’s Heisman odds currently stand, according to FanDuel Sportsbook.

Where Bo Nix’s Heisman odds stand after thrilling win over Texas Tech in Week 2

Now might be a good time to grab the Bo Nix for Heisman Trophy odds…

If you’re interested in getting some good return on your investment, it may be time to start looking at a wager placed on Oregon Ducks quarterback Bo Nix in the Heisman Trophy race.

Through two games, Nix has put up some very solid numbers, averaging over 320 yards and 2.5 TD per game through the air on a 77.5% completion percentage. Despite the flawless play, Nix has seen his odds of winning the Heisman go down bit by bit so far this season, largely due to the level of competition that the Ducks are playing.

So if Nix continues to play this way throughout the Pac-12 season and puts up similar numbers, it’s fair to expect his odds to improve as well, no?

Sounds like a decent time to get in…

Here are the latest odds according to Fanduel after Week 2 of the college football season.
