Notre Dame baseball starts trip with a win

The Irish have started a streak on spring break

The Notre Dame baseball team are in a stretch of playing eight games in ten days and they are starting to get into a groove. After dropping the first two games to Georgia Tech, they won on Sunday and had a chance to start a winning streak today.

Mission accomplished, as the Irish defeated St. Joseph’s in Holly Springs, North Carolina 6-3. There was offense early on both sides, as each team scored two runs in the first inning, but then the Irish pitching settled down and the bats did enough to come away with a victory.

Starter [autotag]Matt Bedford[/autotag] lasted just the first inning then reliever [autotag]Blake Hely[/autotag] took over and pitched four innings, allowing just a hit while walking a batter. [autotag]Jack Findlay[/autotag]
would give up a run but [autotag]Carter Bosch[/autotag] would close out the game for the Irish.

Offensively, it was [autotag]Carter Putz[/autotag] putting the team on his back, as he went 3-for-4 with 4 RBI and a run scored. [autotag]Nick Juaire[/autotag] and [autotag]Jack Penney[/autotag] each added an RBI.

The Irish get back on the diamond tomorrow facing the same SJU team with first pitch scheduled for 1 p.m. EST.

Notre Dame baseball finishes their weekend tilt against Wake Forest with a win

The Irish salvage the finale

It wasn’t the best second ACC series for [autotag]Notre Dame baseball[/autotag] but it wasn’t all lost. The Irish battled host Demon Deacons, getting a 3-1 win on getaway day, salving was could have been a very bad weekend.

Notre Dame lost the first two games of the series to [autotag]Wake Forest[/autotag], but didn’t let the previous two make a difference in the series finale. The Irish scored two runs early and a third one later as the pitchers held off the Deacons bats.

[autotag]Brooks Coetzee[/autotag] had two big RBI hits and [autotag]Carter Putz[/autotag] had the other. Notre Dame pitchers [autotag]Jack Findlay[/autotag] and [autotag]Blake Hely[/autotag] led the staff through seven innings, not allowing a run. The Deacons would score one but the Irish got the victory, 3-1.

The win keeps the Irish over .500 at 9-8, with a 2-4 record in ACC play. They will finally play in front of their home fans at [autotag]Frank Eck Stadium[/autotag] on Tuesday as they are set to host [autotag]Valparaiso[/autotag] with first pitch scheduled for 4:00 p.m. EST.

Notre Dame baseball falls 5-4 against Lipscomb

Game one didn’t result in their first win but tomorrow is another day

This wasn’t the way new [autotag]Notre Dame[/autotag] head coach [autotag]Shawn Stiffler[/autotag] envisioned opening the season: losing to Lipscomb, 5-4. It was a difficult go for the Irish hitters, who mustered one hit all afternoon.

The hit was a big one. Outfielder [autotag]TJ Williams[/autotag] blasted a two-run homer in the top of the fifth. The offense showed some life late, putting two runners on in the ninth. Both advanced and scored on wild pitches. With two outs, Zack Prajzner walked and Williams came to the plate. He struck out to end the game.

It wasn’t easy on Irish pitchers either. Both starter [autotag]Blake Hely[/autotag] and reliever [autotag]Jack Findlay[/autotag] gave up multiple runs.

Hely lasted three innings, giving up three runs while striking out just one. Findlay came in to relieve him. While he had his strikeout pitches working, fanning seven, he gave up two runs in his three innings.

The Irish try again for win No. 1 of the year on Saturday, 3 p.m. EST. The game will be broadcast on ESPN+.

Notre Dame baseball wins Sunday, takes series over North Carolina-Greensboro

The Irish win their first series of the season

The [autotag]Notre Dame[/autotag] baseball team had a pivotal game on Sunday afternoon against host North Carolina-Greensboro and came out victorious 7-4. The Irish jumped on UNCG early, withstood their comeback attempt and evened up their record at 3-3.

The Irish used speed early as [autotag]Zach Prajzner[/autotag] stole second and [autotag]Brooks Coetzee[/autotag] drove him in to get the scoring started. Coetzee would then plate another run in the top of the fourth with a single and the Irish scored another on a walk and bad defense by UNCG. [autotag]Danny Neri[/autotag] would finish off the inning with a single plating two, giving the Irish an early 5-0 lead.

UNCG would score three of their own in the bottom of the fourth, but the Irish answered with one in the top of the fifth, scoring on a passed ball. [autotag]TJ Williams[/autotag] finished off the offense for Notre Dame with a RBI single in the top of the seventh.

Starting pitcher [autotag]Blake Hely[/autotag] struggled through 3.2 innings, giving up three earned runs and striking out just one. Relievers [autotag]Will Mercer[/autotag], [autotag]Matt Bedford[/autotag] and [autotag]Carter Bosch[/autotag] pitched clean outings while [autotag]Sammy Cooper[/autotag] gave up a run in his .2 innings of work.

Notre Dame gets back to action next weekend as they travel to Birmingham, Alabama to face UAB. Game one of the series is set to start on Friday, with first pitch at 3:00 p.m. ET.

Notre Dame’s baseball season begins tomorrow, starting rotation is set

The season begins tomorrow

A new era of [autotag]Notre Dame baseball[/autotag] is upon us. Gone is [autotag]Link Jarrett[/autotag], who set the bar extremely high for new head coach [autotag]Shawn Stiffler[/autotag].

The Irish will get their season started by traveling to Nashville, Tennessee to take on the Lipscomb Bison’s. The three game series will begin on Friday afternoon, with rightly [autotag]Blake Hely[/autotag] getting the start. It will be his first one in an Irish uniform as he transferred in from Davidson.

[autotag]Radek Birkholz[/autotag] will then follow him on Saturday, with [autotag]Jackson Dennies[/autotag] getting the Sunday start. It’s a trio of righties to start the games that the Irish will send to the bump throughout the weekend.

All three games will be broadcasted on ESPN+ as the Irish hope to get off to a fast start in 2023.

Notre Dame lands Davidson right-handed starter Blake Hely

Notre Dame’s run to the College World Series caught the attention of the college baseball world. Some players in the transfer portal had to have seen it as a potential next destination. One person who already was won over was Davidson right-handed starting pitcher [autotag]Blake Hely[/autotag], who informed BlueAndGold.com of his enrollment at the university. This comes right after [autotag]Jack Findlay[/autotag] withdrew his name from the transfer portal.

Hely comes to Notre Dame after four years with the Wildcats. During that time, he compiled a 17-7 record with a 4.09 ERA and 189 strikeouts over 191 2/3 innings. In 2022, he went 9-2, had a 3.80 ERA and struck out 97 hitters over 85 1/3 innings. He also has spent time in the South Florida Collegiate Baseball League.

Hely is the son of Bob Hely, who was drafted out of high school in the fifth round by the Milwaukee Brewers in 1975. Instead of turning professional, he went to Wake Forest, where he saw football game action at quarterback in 1976 and 1977.
