Matthew Leach of MLB.com released six college baseball prospects with their stock on the rise. Tidwell joins five other prospects.

Tidwell entered the year as one of the top pitching prospects in the Draft, but he missed much of the season due to injury. Tennessee’s dominant season has made it a bit easier for the Vols to be patient while Tidwell builds back up, and his SEC Tournament start against Vanderbilt was another encouraging sign.

He went 4 1/3 innings, which may not sound like all that much, but was his second-longest outing of the year. He held the rival Commodores to a run on three hits. Tidwell remains something of an unknown as long as he’s on the comeback trail, but every effective outing helps his case more. –Matthew Leach

2022 MLB draft: Two Vols projected as first round selections

2022 MLB draft: Two Vols are projected as first round selections

The 2022 Major League Baseball first-year player draft will take place July 17–19 in Los Angeles, California.

The draft is 20 rounds and will be televised by MLB Network. Baltimore has the No. 1 overall pick.

Jim Callis of MLB.com released a first round mock draft.

Pitcher Blade Tidwell is projected as a No. 19 pick to Oakland. Right fielder Jordan Beck is projected as the No. 24 overall selection by Boston.

Callis provided analysis of Tidwell and Beck. The entire first round mock draft can be read here.

Tidwell missed the first six weeks of the season with shoulder soreness and has yet to last five innings in a start, yet he may have more upside than any active college pitcher. There’s buzz that South Carolina prep third baseman Tucker Toman could go in the first round, with the Athletics one of the teams attached.

Four of the next five projected picks are college bats, and they all could go in the teens if teams prefer safer picks than high school pitchers. The Red Sox selected Beck in the 14th round out of an Alabama high school three years ago and he often gets compared to Hunter Renfroe, who made a similar leap in his third SEC season.
