USA TODAY Sports Super 25 Regional Football Watchlist: Southwest region

Keep an eye on these teams as the opening Super 25 ranking nears.

The 2023 high school football season has arrived, with teams kicking off across the country in August.

That means the first USA TODAY Sports Super 25 is nearing, which marks another start to an iconic franchise that began back in 1982.

Last year’s Super 25 was one of the tightest races of all time, as St. John Bosco narrowly won out over Mater Dei and Bishop Gorman, among others.

How will things stack up this season? Ahead of the opening Super 25, USA TODAY HSS is looking around the country at the five regions we use to create the national rankings:

Next up is Southwest, which comprises of Arkansas, Louisiana, Mississippi, New Mexico, Oklahoma, and Texas.

Watch: Wake Forest gets commitment from 4-star SG Parker Friedrichsen

Wake Forest has secured one of the most sought-after scorers in the 2024 recruiting class.

Wake Forest has secured one of the most sought-after scorers in the 2024 recruiting class.

On Monday evening, Bixby (Okla.) four-star shooting guard Parker Friedrichsen announced his commitment to the Demon Deacons, sharing the news on Twitter with a video post.

According to MaxPreps, Parker (6-foot-3, 165 pounds) averaged 27.8 points per game last season while shooting 46% from the floor, 70% from the foul line and 34% from the three-point range. Parker does more than score, though. He also managed five assists, four rebounds and 3.3 steals per game.

Going by the composite rankings, Parker is second overall in the state, No. 17 at his position and No. 118 overall in his class.

An extremely popular recruit, Parker had offers from 25 different programs altogether, including On3’s predicted favorite Notre Dame, plus Davidson, Oklahoma State and Nebraska.

Second 2023 Notre Dame recruiting class member asks for release

Another signee out the door as a result of Brey’s pending retirement.

SOUTH BEND – Once again, [autotag]Mike Brey[/autotag]’s plea for Notre Dame’s signees to meet a new coach has gone unheeded. Less than a week after losing 2023 signee Brady Dunlap, the Irish now find themselves without the future services of shooting guard Parker Friedrichsen. Matt Freeman of Irish Sports Daily is reporting that Friedrichsen, who hails from Bixby, Oklahoma, has asked for and been granted his release from his National Letter of Intent. That leaves only [autotag]Markus Burton[/autotag] in the upcoming recruiting class:

Brey’s retirement announcement already has almost completely decimated the incoming group of freshmen. There’s no telling at this point who, if anyone, will commit to the Irish for next season or even beyond. All that’s certain is that the 2023-24 Irish are going to look almost completely different with players who mostly are lucky to see garbage-time minutes this season. Given that and players who aren’t used to game action with each other, lean times for the program aren’t far away.

Bixby breaks Oklahoma high school football record with 49 wins in a row

Bixby High School broke the Oklahoma state record for most consecutive wins and took home its fourth championship in a row.

Bixby (Okla.) High School’s 63-14 victory over Deer Creek High School (Edmond, Okla.) in the state championship gave them their fourth title in a row. It was their seventh in the last eight years.

It also set a state record for number of wins in a row by an 11-man football team.

The championship was Bixby’s 49th consecutive victory, breaking a record set by Wagoner (Okla.) High School from 2014-17, according to Tulsa World.

The Spartans did not allow more than 20 points in any game this season. They scored more than 40 points in every game except one. They have not lost since Aug. 24, 2018, extending their win streak to three years and three months.

Three-star Oklahoma State commit Braylin Presley was dominant as he started the game with a trick-play, 76-yard passing touchdown, ran for a 94-yard score that gave him the school rushing yards record, and finished the game with four total touchdowns.

Preston Solomon, who was the recipient of the 76-yard trick play touchdown, finished the game with 141 receiving yards and three touchdowns. The defense had four interceptions.

Bixby is moving up to the 6AI division next season, according to Tulsa World. They’ll test themselves against the new competition as they work to extend their winning streak — and perhaps win a fifth straight championship.
