Second 2023 Notre Dame recruiting class member asks for release

Another signee out the door as a result of Brey’s pending retirement.

SOUTH BEND – Once again, [autotag]Mike Brey[/autotag]’s plea for Notre Dame’s signees to meet a new coach has gone unheeded. Less than a week after losing 2023 signee Brady Dunlap, the Irish now find themselves without the future services of shooting guard Parker Friedrichsen. Matt Freeman of Irish Sports Daily is reporting that Friedrichsen, who hails from Bixby, Oklahoma, has asked for and been granted his release from his National Letter of Intent. That leaves only [autotag]Markus Burton[/autotag] in the upcoming recruiting class:

Brey’s retirement announcement already has almost completely decimated the incoming group of freshmen. There’s no telling at this point who, if anyone, will commit to the Irish for next season or even beyond. All that’s certain is that the 2023-24 Irish are going to look almost completely different with players who mostly are lucky to see garbage-time minutes this season. Given that and players who aren’t used to game action with each other, lean times for the program aren’t far away.

Notre Dame signee Brady Dunlap requests release from letter of intent

We already are seeing the effects of Mike Brey’s pending retirement.

Despite [autotag]Mike Brey[/autotag]’s call for the 2023 recruiting class to meet with Notre Dame’s new coach, Brady Dunlap has decided he wants out. Not willing to wait and see who leads the Irish next, Dunlap has requested to be released from his national letter of intent. He released the following statement to On3:

“Due to the announcement of coach Brey’s retirement, I have requested my release from Notre Dame and will open my recruitment.

“I want to wish coach Brey well and thank coach [autotag]Antoni Wyche[/autotag] for all of his efforts in recruiting me.

With the departure of Dunlap, a 6-foot-7 forward from Los Angeles, only guards [autotag]Markus Burton[/autotag] and [autotag]Parker Friedrichsen[/autotag] remain in the Irish’s incoming recruiting class. What figures to be a long road back to prominence for the program starting next year just got longer.

Whoever takes over for Brey is not going to have a lot to start with, so solid recruiting immediately will be a must. That’s not going to be easy.

Blake Wesley Will Stay in South Bend, Signs Letter With Notre Dame

Blake Wesley won’t have to go far for his next basketball venture.

Blake Wesley won’t have to go far for his next basketball venture. The recruit out of Riley in South Bend has signed a National Letter of Intent to join Notre Dame next season. Tom Noie of the South Bend Tribune was on hand when Wesley made his announcement Friday:

Mike Brey had this to say about the consensus four-star recruit:

“We have been watching Blake work on his game since middle school and he has developed himself into a complete guard who has great length with court vision – and is a big-time defender. He has a natural ability to score the basketball. To welcome in another local basketball talent is exciting not only to our program, but the South Bend area.”

Wesley, who was the area’s leading scorer with 26.0 points a game last season, is the second South Bend product in two weeks to sign a letter of intent with the Irish. J.R. Konieczny of St. Joseph was the first. Clearly, there will be a strong local presence for Notre Dame basketball in the near future. And at least with this particular signing, that’s just fine with former Irish star Demetrius Jackson, who met Wesley at the program’s summer camp years ago:

J.R. Konieczny Signs National Letter of Intent for Basketball

National Signing Day always is exciting for prep athletes. It’s when they announce where they’ll continue their careers at the next level.

National Signing Day always is exciting for prep athletes. It’s when they announce where they’ll continue their careers at the next level. On Wednesday, Notre Dame benefited from it when 6-foot-7 guard J.R. Konieczny signed a National Letter of Intent to join the team in 2021-22. That Konieczny hails from St. Joseph in South Bend is not at all lost on Mike Brey:

“We are thrilled to add J.R. to our program. It is great to have a ‘local product’ in a Notre Dame uniform. Our staff has watched him grow up in this town and get better since he was 13 years old. He has worked to become a 6-[foot]-7 guard who can shoot, handle the ball and has a great feel for the game. He is a perfect fit for how we like to play.”

ESPN has rated Konieczny a four-star recruit, and he’s been listed as one of the top 150 high school basketball seniors. During the 2019-20 season, he was named third team all-state, averaging over 24 points a game. After scoring 42 in a sectional semifinal, he was named the Indiana Basketball Coaches Association Player of the Week.

Here’s where a junior golfer needs to be ranked to make a Division I roster

A frequently asked question in the recruiting process is, “Where do I need to be ranked to secure a spot on a college golf roster?”

Navigating the road through junior golf to college golf is an inexact science. There’s no formula to follow and everyone’s path, particularly to Division I golf, looks a little different.

One of the questions asked most frequently throughout the recruiting process involves a player’s ranking, more specifically, “Where do I need to be ranked to secure a spot on a college golf roster?”

Golfweek sorted the list of recent National Letter of Intent signees from the class of 2020 in search of that answer. Data from that class provides a reference point.

A junior boy ranked inside the top 500 overall can safely assume he has the game to play Division I college golf. According to data from the class of 2020, a player inside the top 150 in his class can play Division I golf.

On the girls side, being inside the top 300 overall will get a player a look from Division I schools. Class by class, a player needs to be ranked inside the top 100 players.

The following charts (scroll down to see girls) list 2020 NLI signees with their overall Golfweek Junior Ranking as of Dec. 1, 2019. Note that these lists do not include all NLI signees and only include players who were ranked by Golfweek (played five or more Golfweek-ranked events) at the time of signing. Also note that there are unranked players who do sign with Division I schools.
