Mike White among Studs & Duds from Jets’ Week 10 loss to Bills

Mike White and the Jets’ entire defense headline our studs and duds from New York’s embarrassing 38-3 loss to the Bills.

The Jets have played the Bills well — albeit in defeat — recently, but that was not the case on Sunday afternoon. Buffalo marched into MetLife Stadium and dominated New York for all four quarters in a 45-17 win.

Mike White struggled to the tune of multiple interceptions, while the Jets couldn’t stop a nosebleed defensively for the fourth straight game.

Here are the studs and duds — mostly duds — from New York’s embarrassing loss to the Bills.

5 takeaways from the Jets’ Week 10 blowout loss to the Bills

Mike White came back down to earth and the Jets’ defense continued to struggle. Takeaways from New York’s loss to the Bills:

The Mike White Experience is over.

The Jets struggled to get anything going under center in White’s third start of the season and continued to underwhelm defensively in a 45-17 loss to the Bills. White played poorly against one of the best secondaries in football, throwing four interceptions and failing to orchestrate Mike LaFleur’s offense.

Here are five takeaways from New York’s Week 10 loss to the Bills.

Bills vs. Jets inactives: Tevin Coleman, Corey Davis return from injury

Tevin Coleman and Corey Davis are back for the Jets against the Bills in Week 10 after missing time with injuries.

The Jets are getting their No. 1 wide receiver on Sunday afternoon, as Corey Davis is active against the Bills.

Davis missed New York’s last two games with a hip flexor injury suffered in practice. The 26-year-old will reassume his role as the Jets’ No. 1 option in the passing game and will look to build on his chemistry with Mike White after catching a touchdown pass from him against the Patriots in Week 7.

Also back for the Jets is Tevin Coleman, who had also missed New York’s last two games with an injury. Coleman was a full participant in practice on Friday and will slot into a complementary role behind Michael Carter and Ty Johnson in the backfield.

Shaq Lawson (hamstring) and Alijah Vera-Tucker (toe) are active after being listed as questionable leading up to Week 10. Braden Mann and Conor McDermott were activated from injured reserve on Saturday and will play against the Bills. Nick Bawden, Ronnie Blair, Hamilcar Rashed Jr. and Kenny Yeboah join the Jets’ active roster after being elevated from the practice squad. Laurent Duvernay-Tardif is active for the first time since the Jets acquired him from the Chiefs before the trade deadline.

New York’s inactives include Zach Wilson, La’Mical Perine, Isaiah Williams, Elijah Riley, Tim Ward and Jonathan Marshall. Denzel Mims and Jason Pinnock are also inactive and on the COVID-19 list.

Bills running back Zack Moss is active and good to go after suffering a concussion against the Jaguars last weekend. Linebacker Tremaine Edmunds is out with a hamstring injury. Wide receiver Cole Beasley (ribs) and tight end Dawson Knox (hand) are active and will play against the Jets. Knox has not played since the Bills beat the Chiefs on Oct. 10.

The Jets are just hours away from returning to action after their Thursday Night Football loss to the Colts.

New York hosts a Bills team that is coming off a 9-6 loss to the Jaguars in which its offense struggled throughout the game and was plagued by turnovers. Buffalo is still the top dog in the AFC East, though, posing the Jets with a tough test after their 15-point loss to Indianapolis.

The Bills have experienced a wake-up call during the past two weeks courtesy of Florida’s Dolphins and Jaguars teams. Both clubs were underdogs who came to play when facing Buffalo.

While the Bills ultimately defeated their AFC rivals in Buffalo, they didn’t have the same favorable outcome the following Sunday in Jacksonville.

With the Jets next up this weekend in the first of two-division meetings this season, it’s the ideal time to make necessary adjustments in the teams’ mental and game preparations.

Unlike in recent years, this season Buffalo finds itself not as the perpetual NFL underdog out to prove itself, but as an odds-favored Super Bowl contender. They’ll have challenges across the remaining regular-season schedule with opportunities to prove they are just that, and it starts Sunday at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, NJ.

Here are three keys to the game for the Bills (5-3) against the Jets (2-6):

Bills vs. Jets: Mike White’s chance to prove he belongs among 5 Week 10 storylines

Does Mike White have what it takes to beat an elite Buffalo defense? Keep an eye on that and these other Bills-Jets storylines:

The Jets are hoping a little magic is left in MetLife Stadium after their Week 8 upset of the Bengals.

Buffalo travels to East Rutherford this Sunday fresh off an embarrassing loss to the Jaguars last weekend. An angry Bills team is about the worst possible opponent for the Jets after giving up over 500 yards of offense to the Colts on Thursday Night Football — especially considering Josh Allen and company are averaging 390.1 yards and 29.4 points per game.

Here are five storylines to know for Gang Green’s first clash of the season with the Bills.

Jets chant Mike White’s name whenever he enters the locker room

Ever since he beat the Bengals, Jets QB Mike White hears his name chanted whenever he enters New York’s locker room.

Jets fans serenaded Mike White with chants of his name after he led Gang Green to a stunning win over the Bengals at MetLife Stadium in Week 8.

Now, his teammates are getting in on the fun.

Chants of White’s name have made their way to One Jets Drive. Every time he enters the locker room, his teammates are there and ready to show him some love.

“The only thing that’s really changed is [I] walk in the locker room and some of these guys won’t stop chanting ‘Mike White,'” the quarterback said Thursday. “And I told them, ‘This has to stop at some point, guys.'”

White has gone from a career backup who had to wait four years to throw an NFL pass to a folk hero in less than a month’s time. The 26-year-old will get the chance to start again this weekend with Zach Wilson working his way back to full strength. If chants of his name surface in East Rutherford for a second straight home game, he’ll know he’s doing something right under center.

“I hope there’s Mike White chants, because that means the offense is doing something good,” he said. “I hope to hear some type of cheering from the fans.”

Jets are double-digit underdogs for first matchup with AFC East-leading Bills

Oddsmakers aren’t giving the Jets much of a chance to beat the Bills in Week 10.

The Bills suffered an embarrassing loss to the lowly Jaguars last weekend, but oddsmakers are not looking down on the top dogs in the AFC East after their third defeat of the season.

Tipico Sportsbook pegs the Jets as 11.5-point underdogs for their first matchup of the season with the Bills. New York is fresh off an underwhelming performance of its own — a 45-30 loss to the Colts in which it allowed more than 500 yards of offense — but the talent disparity between the two teams is gaping. Buffalo is an AFC title contender, while the Jets are still rebuilding.

The 2-6 Jets are -108 (bet $108 to win $100) to cover their end of the spread, while the Bills are -112 (bet $112 to win $100). The over/under is 47.5 and New York’s money line is +500 (bet $100 to win $500). Buffalo’s is -750 (bet $750 to win $100).

Bills CB Dane Jackson calls NFL debut interception ‘surreal’

Buffalo Bills CB Dane Jackson on his first-career interception.

The Buffalo Bills defeated the New York Jets in Week 7, 18-10, thanks to a career effort by kicker Tyler Bass and 300-plus passing yards from quarterback Josh Allen.

But football is three-phase game and in the second half, heroics came via the Bills defense. Pass rusher Jerry Hughes stole the headlines, but underneath the surface there was another big performance that helped get the Bills across the finish line. The one from cornerback Dane Jackson.

The overlooked seventh-round rookie had a pass breakup and his first-career interception in what was his NFL debut. Following the game, Jackson described what happened in an expected manner, but also credited his teammates for his performance, saying the veteran guys provided him with plenty of motivation.

“I felt good, it felt kind of surreal out there,” Jackson said. “I went out there with a lot of confidence thanks to the older guys.”

With Josh Norman (hamstring), Levi Wallace (ankle) and Cam Lewis (wrist) out with injuries, Jackson was one of four players who were called up from the practice squad on Saturday prior to kickoff. Buffalo head coach Sean McDermott, like many, probably didn’t have high expectations for a player making his first start. But as it turns out, Jackson was solid.

“That was huge, for any rookie to contribute like that, especially coming off the bench the way he did. That’s our team, you know, next man up mentality,” McDermott said. “It’s a great lesson for the rest of the young players on our team that when your number’s called you better be ready.”

Naturally the highlighted moment that Jackson won’t soon forget was his first pick. Late in the first half, Darnold tossed a funny looking pass thanks to Buffalo’s pass rushers which Jackson jumped in front of while in zone coverage.

“I was in the right place at the right time,” Jackson said.

A strong day during his first time at the office is certainly a big-time confidence booster for Jackson and something that his team could certainly use moving forward. On Sunday, Buffalo continues their season against the Patriots, however, their two games after that, the Bills will need all the confident defensive backs they can get with the Seahawks and Cardinals also en route.

Jerry Hughes says Bills were ‘road warriors’ vs. Jets

Buffalo Bills DE Jerry Hughes reflects on win over the New York Jets in Week 7, 18-10.

Prior to Sunday’s win against the New York Jets, the Buffalo Bills defense and pass rush looked more like an engine revving to start up than the well-oiled machine of recent memory.

Even in the first half of the eventual 18-10 win, the Bills defense was still playing like it was stuck in the mud. Jets running back Frank Gore was consistently gashing the Bills on the ground. When the two teams went back in the locker room at half, New York led 10-6 in big part to that.

As things turned out, it was a tale of two halves for the Bills. Not only did Buffalo hold the Jets scoreless in the second half, they nearly left Gang Green yard-less. The Jets only advanced the ball four net yards the entire second half.

That’s some turnaround.

Playing a big role in that effort was defensive end Jerry Hughes. With two sacks, he led the Bills’ pass rush which finally came to life. Hughes also had a game-sealing interception. Following the victory, Hughes said the improvement actually had more to do with mentality than anything else.

“We were able to bring that energy on the road, and be those road warriors,” Hughes said. “And I think it was huge for us just to get out of that slump.”

The captain’s 10th career game with two-plus sacks tied another former team leader, Kyle Williams, for fifth in franchise history in that category. On his interception, a pass batted by Quinton Jefferson, Hughes recorded his first pick since his junior year in college at TCU.

“It was just floating there. What are the odds you have one floating like that in D-line territory?” added Hughes. “Figured why not grab it, try to score a touchdown. Have some fun.”

In trying to have a simple good time, Hughes also managed to impress some of his teammates, including linebacker Tremaine Edmunds, who had a couple of opportunities himself to grab an interception but failed to do so.

“Hats off to my dog Jerry, man. That’s a good play,” Edmunds said. “But I’ve got to make a play, simple as that. And I will, man. Opportunities are going to come. I’ve just got to take advantage of them & capitalize off of them.”

The momentum-building effort in the second half against the Jets came just before the Bills face another AFC East foe next weekend as well…  the Patriots. While only 2-4, Buffalo won’t be overlooking the team that has dominated their division for many years.

But having some extra confidence gained against New York heading into their meeting with New England? That won’t hurt.
