Carlos Dunlap on track to make Seahawks debut vs. Bills

Seahawks will have DE Carlos Dunlap vs. Buffalo Bills in Week 9.

The Seahawks are likely to have the services of defensive end Carlos Dunlap for the first time on Sunday against the Bills.

On Oct. 28, the Seahawks (6-1) bolstered their defensive front by adding the 31-year-old prior to the trade deadline via trade with the Bengals. The move came days prior to the recent trade deadline on Tuesday, and doing so has now come in handy.

The NFL’s COVID-19 safety protocols require a player to go through multiple days of waiting and testing before they’re allow to join their new team. Some speculated that trades, like the Seahawks’ decision to add Dunlap, would come earlier than Tuesday’s deadline so teams could get one extra game out of new additions. Had Seattle traded for Dunlap at the deadline on Tuesday, he wouldn’t have gotten in enough practice and protocol time to play against the Bills (6-2).

In regard to Dunlap playing in Buffalo, Seahawks coach Pete Carroll essentially all but said it’s happening on Wednesday.

“I don’t see any restriction at all on him playing this week,” Carroll said via Seahawks Wire. “We’ll find out during the week and all, but really excited to have him out here, and he’s really pumped about being part of it.”

Dunlap could be a big help to the Seahawks defense… if he can get to the quarterback. Seattle’s defense in the worst-ranked pass defense in the entire NFL and it’s not really close.

Dunlap is a two-time Pro Bowler but hasn’t been elected to the game since 2016. He’s spent his entire career with the Bengals, which will change in Week 9. In 2020, Dunlap only has one sack and Pro Football Focus grades him the 96th best edge defender so far this season out of 113 qualifying ones. But perhaps a change of scenery could go a long way for him.

Pete Carroll wishes Quinton Jefferson was still on Seahawks

Seattle Seahawks coach Pete Carroll on Buffalo Bills DL Quinton Jefferson

Quinton Jefferson is quietly enjoying a successful start to his Buffalo Bills career. But that’s not coming as a surprise at all to Seattle Seahawks head coach Pete Carroll.

As a free agent this offseason, Jefferson decided to leave the Seahawks (6-1) for the Bills (6-2) via a two-year contract. But there wasn’t any hard feelings at all on Wednesday when Carroll chatted via conference call with the western New York media. In fact, he wishes Jefferson was still on his side.

“We miss the heck out of Big Q. He was a real favorite of ours, a guy we drafted and all that. It just came a time in his contract where he had a chance to be a free agent,” Carroll said. “He’s a really good ball player, really versatile… he was banged up early in his career, it took him a couple of years to get going, but once he did, he was a nice player enough where [the Bills] recognized it and were able to put him on their club.”

Jefferson’s deal landed him $13.5 million with the Bills. Carroll added he understands players have to cash in when they can.

“It’s the game that we play. I wish we had him on our team, but we couldn’t at the time. That is the way the league is,” Carroll said.

In his first half of a season with the Bills, the defensive lineman has been a bit of a bright spot for Buffalo’s otherwise woeful defense. He’s forced two turnovers, a fumble and he tipped a pass which was then intercepted by teammate Jerry Hughes and in total, Jefferson has two sacks and four QB hits as well.

According to ESPN’s Net Gen Stats, Jefferson is doing so against a lot of double teams, too. Only a handful of guys in the NFL, such as the Rams’ Aaron Donald, has faced more double teams. Efforts like that have also led to Pro Football Focus grading him a 61.2 overall mark so far in 2020, the best grade among all of the Bills’ defensive tackles.

It’s easy to see that Carroll’s right… Jefferson adds plenty of value to Buffalo’s defense.

But Jefferson had an interested thought last month. Perhaps the best is yet to come. Following Buffalo’s win over the Raiders, Jefferson said he’s still only just settling in, so things could get better and better for not just him, but the entire defensive line.

“It’s a long season, we’re just starting to mesh together, still getting a feel for each other… we’re only going up,” Jefferson said. “We’re going to keep growing and keep meshing together, I’m excited for what the future holds.”

The Bills are going to need efforts from the likes of Jefferson and others on the defensive line this weekend especially. His former team sports quarterback Russell Wilson, who’s the MVP front-runner at the mid-point of the 2020 campaign.

Seahawks’ Jamal Adams expected to practice in full ahead of Bills meeting

Injury update for Seahawks safety Jamal Adams ahead of facing Buffalo Bills in Week 9.

One of the biggest early-season transactions before the 2020 campaign even got going was star safety Jamal Adams being traded from the Jets to the Seahawks.

However, Adams has been hindered by a lingering groin injury he sustained Week 3 and he got some good news heading into his team’s matchup with one of his old AFC East rivals. According to Seahawks Wire, the Bills are likely to face Adams in Week 9 as he’s expected to have a full week of practicing.

“He’s going to go full practice this week and get back into action,” Carroll said on Monday. “He was going to try that last week and it just didn’t work out right, he got ill. He should be able to go. We won’t know until Thursday about Friday, just as we do it.”

“He’s just dying to get out there with the fellas, so we’re really looking forward to it,” Carroll added.

While only appearing in parts of three games so far for the Seahawks, Adams has recorded three tackles for loss this season with two sacks. According to Pro Football Focus, his overall grade thus far this season is a 68.0 overall.

In six career games against Buffalo, Adams has a 3-3 overall record and has defended four passes.

Bills QB Josh Allen: Seahawks will be ‘four-quarter dog fight’

Buffalo Bills QB Josh Allen, Sean McDermott on Seattle Seahawks and QB Russell Wilson.

If the best defense is a good offense, the Buffalo Bills have a huge task ahead of them.

The Seattle Seahawks lead the NFC West and head to Bills Stadium in Week 9. Their defense is ranked the worst in the NFL and it’s not particularly close. Seattle’s defense, on average, has allowed 30 more yards a game than the next closest team. However, the Seahawks have a 6-1 record..

It doesn’t take much explanation… clearly the Seahawks have an excellent offense to offset their terrible defense. The Bills know that and understand it’s going to be tough to deal with. Bills quarterback Josh Allen might have to do heavy a lot of heavy lifting to counter the Seahawks offense led by quarterback Russell Wilson. Allen said Buffalo’s not expecting that to be an easy task.

“We understand how well the Seahawks are playing. How well the quarterback, Russell Wilson, is playing there. We got no small task this coming week. They’re on top of a lot of statistical categories on the offensive side of the ball. We’ve got to make sure we’re doing our part and try to keep them off the field as much as possible,” Allen said via video conference on Wednesday. “They’ve got some very opportunistic guys on defense, they’re forcing a lot of turnovers, it’s going to be a four quarter dog fight. We understand that.”

Buffalo head coach Sean McDermott will have the even harder task ahead of him. Allen’s going to do his best to keep the ball away from Wilson, but there’s only so much he can do. McDermott’s defense needs to put up at least some sort of a fight, and that’s where the real difficulty sits.

Wilson is the current MVP front-runner in the NFL for a reason after all. He leads the league in several QB categories, from passing touchdowns (26) to passer rating (120.8).

But McDermott, like Allen, knows Wilson & Co. will probably get theirs. Because of that, the coach said the entire Bills roster has to rise to the challenge, not just the defense.

“They present a huge challenge. They won a Super Bowl,” McDermott said. “Russell’s playing at an all-time high, an MVP level. They’ve got weapons and they score a lot of points. It’ll be a big challenge for us defensively and as a team.”

“We recognize they have good players, good scheme. They’re playing at high level. They’re tough, man. They’re really tough. They got against San Francisco and they beat them pretty good there,” McDermott added.
