Bills explain more changes made to O-line vs. Rams

Buffalo Bills offensive coordinator Brian Daboll on changes made by team’s offensive line.

Week in and week out, the Bills haven’t had the same offensive line on the field at all this season, despite Buffalo head coach Sean McDermott stating before the start of the campaign that he really just wants to have the position group settled and ready to go.

Putting the Bills behind the eight-ball immediately this season in terms of their O-line depth was the loss of Jon Feliciano to a chest injury. Another change could be en route in terms of Buffalo’s offensive line structure come when Feliciano is healthy as well, but that’s a discussion for another day.

The topic at-hand currently is the benching of Quinton Spain in Week 3, who was signed to a contract extension this offseason. Cody Ford was moved to Spain’s spot at left guard, while Brian Winters got his first start with the Bills at right guard.

And it sounds like we’re still only getting started with the musical chairs on the O-line based on what Bills offensive coordinator Brian Daboll said on Monday via video conference. Daboll did not commit to Week 3’s combination at guard sticking around.

“That was just a decision for that game, that week, that we came up with. Have confidence in all three of those guys… how it shakes out going forward, we’ll see. It’s a good group to work with,” Daboll said. “We just felt that was the direction we wanted to go with… and basically that was it.”

Not exactly the most most deceive stance taken by Daboll, which came just a week after McDermott addressed the offensive line shake up against the Dolphins in Week 2. In that game, Spain did start, but the Bills briefly moved to their lineup for the Rams.

A week ago, McDermott downplayed the situation and said it’s just some tinkering around the team was doing. Evidently it was much more than that though, considering the Bills completely removed Spain from the lineup vs. the Rams.

“Just taking a look at [the offensive line] from an offensive strategy standpoint. Looking at some things. The first kind of week, three four weeks, you’re trying to find out who you are as a football team and what gives you the best chance to win, different matchups, different looks. And so that’s where we are at some positions now. In particular because we haven’t had the preseason games to do that,” McDermott said last week.

It’s anyone’s guess what the Bills will go with against the Raiders in their next game in the trenches at this point. While subjective, Pro Football Focus does provide us some context on how Buffalo’s offensive line has played through three games.

At the tackle position? Very well. Daryl Williams clocks in as the NFL’s 13th best tackle to date, while Dion Dawkins lists at No. 30. Williams was even named to the football analytics outlet’s Team of the Week for this past weekend. But inside? It’s been messy all around. Spain clocks in at a 56.3 overall to lead the way, which is a below average grade for PFF. The rest of the interior of the line falls in at: Ford (51.3), Winters (52.2) and center Mitch Morse (55.0). Again, PFF can be taken with a grain of salt… but that’s not a great start.

Lee Smith, Robert Woods, EJ Manuel, Marquise Goodwin had a Bills ‘homecoming’

Four former teammates with the Buffalo Bills got together on a virtual call prior to Bills-Rams in Week 3.

A lot has changed around One Bills Drive since wide receiver Robert Woods was a member of the Buffalo football team. Woods returned to Orchard Park this weekend with the Los Angeles Rams in a game that ended up being nothing short of an emotional roller coaster for both sides.

The Bills ended up winning 35-32.

In terms of familiar faces, there really weren’t many that Woods knew of. Among the players still on the Bills from when Woods was, there’s tight end Lee Smith.

As things go in the NFL, guys are still friends even if business takes them in another direction, like Woods going to the Rams. Prior to kickoff on Sunday, it looks like Woods and Smith linked up and said hello on the field at Bills Stadium, but they included a couple of other former teammates that weren’t at the games as well.

Former Bills quarterback EJ Manuel took to his social media account on Instagram and shared a fun photo. Manuel, Smith, Woods and another former Bills wide receiver, Marquise Goodwin, all evidently jumped onto a video call and had a pre-game chat while Smith and Woods were actually on the field together.

Manuel’s post said Woods called it a “homecoming” for the crew.

Check out Manuel’s story post via Bills Wire’s Bradley Gelber below:

Maybe the reunion, of sorts, helped out the guys who played in the game too? Smith, inactive for the first two games of the season, played, and only played one snap… and he scored on the play. Meanwhile Woods hauled in five of his six targets for 74 yards and had a touchdown.

Currently Manuel is not on an NFL roster, but Goodwin will be with the Philadelphia Eagles in 2021, at least. After being traded to Philly this offseason, Goodwin decided to opt out of the season due to the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic.

PODCAST: After overcoming second-half woes, is Josh Allen an MVP?

Buffalo Bills podcast following Week 3, 2020 NFL season vs. Los Angeles Rams on quarterback Josh Allen.

The Buffalo Bills left us with another nail-biter finish this weekend, as they defeated the Los Angeles Rams 35-32 in Orchard Park. With a 28-3 deficit in hand for the Bills early in the third quarter, the Rams rallied back to challenge the Bills, scoring 29 unanswered points, but could not finish the game on top.

It certainly left many scratching their heads, as the phrase “28-3” is not one that is kindly used on the team with 28 points. The Bills, however, avoided that ugly stigma with another incredible, yet roller coaster ride of a fourth-quarter comeback. The Bills now have three wins in as many weeks, with a road trip to Las Vegas to play the Raiders next week.

There are certainly some questions about this Bills defense, and the scheme being used after they jumped to the massive lead that they did. How could a team that was ranked in the top-five last year allow such a comeback? It was certainly worrisome, as that put Bills quarterback Josh Allen and the offense in unnecessarily challenging predicaments the last several weeks,

Allen continues to earn a solid reputation amongst his fans and even his biggest critics. Allen has thrown for 300-plus yards in every game this year, and it isn’t too far-fetched to start mentioning Allen in the MVP discussion. It’s still early, and there’s lots of great football to be played, but he’s playing as great as any elite quarterback in the NFL right now.

Reaction: What national media said about Bills’ comeback vs. Rams

National reaction to Buffalo Bills, Josh Allen comeback win in Week 3 vs. Los Angeles Rams.

The Buffalo Bills beat the Los Angeles Rams 35-32, improving to 3-0 on the season. The score line alone reads nicely, but factoring in a major comeback after an ugly collapse? Even better.

It was a win that has earned nation-wide buzz similar to when Buffalo defeated the Dallas Cowboys on Thanksgiving Day last season. Week 3’s victory made a strong impression on many.

Here’s what some of the top national media outlets, analysts and others had to say on social media about the Bills’ win over the Rams:

Bills TE Tyler Kroft says clutch performance was emotional

Buffalo Bills tight end Tyler Kroft says Week 3 two touchdowns against the Los Angeles Rams was emotional for him.

Tyler Kroft came out of nowhere for the Buffalo Bills in Week 3 against the Los Angeles Rams.

Kroft had four catches for 24 yards on five targets from quarterback Josh Allen in the 35-32 win. That alone is the best production the Bills have got  out of their tight end position this season.

But factor in two touchdowns, including the game-winning score in the dying seconds? It’s the best game by any Bills tight end in… a very, very long time and after Kroft struggled during his first season with the Bills in 2019, there were some emotions in the Bills locker room after the win.

Among his teammates, wide receiver Cole Beasley and offensive lineman Mitch Morse both admitted via video conference following the win that they got emotional seeing Kroft deliver.

“You talk about Tyler Kroft, you talk about one hell of a dude,” Morse said to WROC-TV. “A guy who… kind of had a B.S. deal given to him the first year, with injury… And a guy who has taken everything with grace… and a guy who’s only mentality was to take it day-by-day and come be the best player he can be. And holy cow, you talk about a guy who, when he scored that touchdown? Our sideline erupted. It’s just fun. It’s fun to see him score cause he’s just the best guy.”

Naturally if the feels were felt by his teammates, Kroft himself had some thoughts in the same direction. Acknowledging his lengthy injury history in just over a season with the Bills, Kroft said he was just grateful to be given the opportunities.

“Obviously there’s emotion that’s been brought into this. Me re-breaking my foot, blowing out my other ankle, so, I mean, playing on two bad feet last year, there’s just a lot of stuff to overcome personally. But I’ve always been taught you come to work every day, ready to go, handle your opportunities when they come and handle your business like a pro. I’m just happy I was in a position to make a play today,” Kroft said via video conference.

The tight end also had to give a shoutout to his quarterback, too.

“We have some competitive dogs in our locker room. I can’t say enough about 17 (Josh Allen). He’s competitive as hell,” Kroft said.

Kroft’s clutch plays certainly came in handy for the Bills, who continue to get big games from players all over their lineup. Sometimes it’s a guy like Kroft, others it’s a Week 2 standout by star Stefon Diggs. Regardless, the Bills locker room continues to show it doesn’t matter to them who does it, just that it gets done.

Kroft even displayed this on Sunday, too.

The only reason the veteran tight end was put in that spot was because second-year pro Dawson Knox suffered a concussion last week against the Dolphins. Overall, Knox hasn’t exactly had the big year so far that some have hoped for with only three catches and a fumble to his name in 2020.

Still, watching his teammate from the same position group put out the heroics? Knox shared his happiness during the game on social media via Twitter. Kroft took note after the game, and gave a “love you bro” right back:

The comradery the Bills have built in their locker room continues to shine and it came in handy on the field in the dying seconds, didn’t it?

Josh Allen sums up comeback heroics for Bills in one sentence

Buffalo Bills quarterback Josh Allen sums up his comeback efforts for his team in one sentence vs. Los Angeles Rams.

Just another day at the office for Buffalo Bills quarterback Josh Allen, right?

Allen surpassed 300 yards in the air for the third-straight game, going 24-for-33 passing with 311 yards in the air.

Oh yeah, Allen also had five total touchdowns, including four in the air.

Whoops, one more note: Allen had a ridiculous comeback effort after his own team blew a big lead in a Falcons-like way. After the Bills looked dead, Allen brought them back from the grave for the win, 35-32, in Week 3 against the Los Angeles Rams.

How did the Bills QB end up pulling that rabbit out of the hat? It took a few simple words strung together, seven in total, for Allen to describe what went down.

“I just want it… more than anything,” Allen said via video conference following the game.

Allen certainly showed that, and it’s something he’s put on display throughout his young NFL career. Just last season, Allen had five game-winning drives, tying the Texans’ Deshaun Watson and Seahawks’ Russell Wilson in that category. He’s back up to two already through three games in 2020. That extra gear is something the Bills have longed for at the quarterback position.

Buffalo head coach Sean McDermott, never one for the dramatics, even had to take notice of what his quarterback has accomplished very recently.

“To come back and win the game in the NFL is tough to do and he’s done it twice in the last two weeks,” said McDermott. “We got the DNA that guys believe in themselves that they’re going to make plays.”

At the end of the day, Allen, McDermott and Western New York are happy with that win. It’s another one on the good side of their win-loss column, but that doesn’t mean Allen wants to do that again.

Fourth-quarter comebacks happen, but having to do them after having a huge lead? Allen sounds fine if that scenario never unfolds again for his team.

“Going up 28-3, as a team, we have to be better. We need to make sure we keep our foot on the pedal and we’ve got to put that game away,” Allen said. “I’m very happy with how resilient this team was, but I’m also  little mad at myself for allowing this kind of dip there.”

Bills Wire’s Week 3 Player of the Game: QB Josh Allen

Buffalo Bills quarterback Josh Allen wins the Bills Wire’s Player of the Game for Week 3.

It wasn’t pretty by any means, but Buffalo Bills quarterback Josh Allen certainly earned his second Bills Wire Player of the Week designation against the Los Angeles Rams in Week 3. Perhaps he was angry with us that wide receiver Stefon Diggs got it last week?

After leading the bills to a 28-3 lead early in the third quarter, the Rams mustered a near comeback, scoring 29 unanswered points. However, Allen, overcoming some penalties, including a facemask penalty of his own, took the Bills on an 80-yard, 11-play drive which concluded in a game-winning touchdown pass to tight end Tyler Kroft in the dying seconds. It was another fourth-quarter comeback for Allen, as he’s earning quite the reputation for that sort of thing.

Allen went 24-for-33 passing on the day, with 311 passing yards, four passing touchdowns, one rushing score. He did have an interception, but it was a very questionable call. Nonetheless, Allen’s heroics earn him the coveted hardware from Bills Wire again this week.

5 takeaways from the Bills’ 35-32 win over the Rams

Here are five takeaways from the Buffalo Bills’ 35-32 win over the Los Angeles Rams in Week 3.

The Buffalo Bills never make it easy, do they?

But at the end of the game, the Bills had more points on the scoreboard than the Los Angeles Rams and have survived the battle of undefeated teams. Buffalo took the 38-35 win over Los Angeles to jump to 3-0 this season.

Here are five takeaways from the win:

Josh Allen, wow

How else do you explain that fourth quarter by the Bills quarterback? Down and out, Josh Allen found a way. While Allen did enter the game with eight fourth-quarter comebacks, which included a tie for the league-lead in that category in 2019 with Seahawks QB Russell Wilson, this one was just… different.

For the first time in a comeback win for the Bills, they were down and out. No, no… they were just out cold. There were no signs of life from the Bills.

Enter Allen.

Without a doubt after three games of the season, Allen would have won the MVP Award after that showing on his final drive. Allen found deep completions to Cole Beasley on third and 22, and then another to Stefon Diggs to get into the red zone. With the help of a fourth-down penalty from the Rams, Allen found Tyler Kroft, again, in the end zone for the game-winning score. Ugly sacks and second-half penalties aside, the Bills had an incredible win in Week 3.

The Bills’ beloved mascot was over the moon for the Bills to take a 28-3 lead on the Los Angeles Rams in Week 3.

Maybe it was the Josh Allen pass? Perhaps the Stefon Diggs catch? Or just the fact that it was Rams cornerback Jalen Ramsey trying to defend Diggs on the play? Check out Billy Buffalo going wild in an empty Bills Stadium via WIVB-TV’s Scott Swenson:

WATCH: AJ Epenesa gets first sack with Bills

First career sack for Buffalo Bills DE AJ Epenesa.

Early in the Buffalo Bills’ Week 3 meeting with the Los Angeles Rams, defensive end AJ Epenesa showed his 40-yard dash time didn’t mean much.

The second-round rookie recorded his first sack of his NFL career after Rams quarterback Jared Goff scrambled out of the pocket. Epenesa’s speed certainly didn’t hold him back there.
