Bills’ Ed Oliver after Chargers sack: ‘Christmas gonna be good!’

Ed had a key sack late:

Buffalo Bills defensive tackle Oliver had a resounding sentiment from the postgame press conference podium following Buffalo’s 24-22 road win over the Chargers in Los Angeles.

“Christmas gonna be good!”

Oliver and the Bills defense closed out the final 28 seconds of the game to seal the victory following a Tyler Bass field goal that gave them the lead.

The defensive tackle had a big sack on L.A.’s backup QB Easton Stick on first down during the Chargers’ final drive, followed by a deflected second down pass and a failed series of laterals as time ran out.

Oliver was able to break through the Bolts’ offensive front to get to Stick for an electrifying second sack of the game and of the fourth quarter.

“Coach [Sean] McDermott said we need a sack to end the game, I said ‘OK!’” Oliver shared. “I had already hit the dude with the move earlier … he fell for it again. Went with it, the quarterback tried to climb the pocket, I was already on him … Took him down, so that ran time off the clock. … I already knew once I got the sack that it was over.”

Consistency in closing out games has been an area Buffalo has looked to improve in.

For Oliver’s part, the No. 9 overall first-round pick in the 2019 NFL draft has been under the microscope since the Bills selected him. Buffalo’s emphasis on player development has yielded yet another success story, as Oliver has taken the next step at the pro level to emerge as a disruptive force at the line of scrimmage.

In June of this year, the Bills signed the 26-year-old to a four-year, $68 Million extension, including a $500,000 incentive bonus in his contract if he gets eight sacks this season. An incentive he hit the play on Stick in the final minute of Saturday’s contest, making the game-closing impact the Bills need.

“Hit the incentive right before Christmas,” Oliver noted. “I told my family if I hit it, it’s going to be a nice Christmas. So, now I gotta go buy more Christmas gifts, to make sure everybody’s taken care of. … They’re going to come after Christmas, but just know, it is what it is.”

His head coach spoke highly of how the DT is handling the expectations of his contract as well.

“He’s taken it – and these are my words – but he’s taken like, ‘Hey, I’m going to show you how grateful I am for it, and I’m going to play up to that level,’” HC Sean McDermott said to the press. “And that just really says a lot about who he is as a person and how much pride he takes in his work and the job he does.”

Oliver himself was also to the point in describing his feelings on netting the game-clinching sack.

“That’s what they paid me for,” Oliver said. “Everybody, you know, when I got paid, they had a certain opinion. And I had my opinion by my own self, and I’m the type of guy who walks around with a chip on my shoulder 24/7. … I just keep on trucking.”

Bills’ Josh Allen on Chargers win: ‘We found a way’

#Bills’ Josh Allen on #Chargers win: ‘We found a way’

The Bills shocked the Chargers in Los Angeles Saturday night, winning their head-to-head matchup 24-22 and eliminating the Bolts from playoff contention.

On offense, this was due in big part to the heads-up play of QB Josh Allen during the contest, which included a pass for 38 air yards downfield (the QB’s longest of the season) to WR Gabe Davis, which went for 57 yards total and a touchdown.

Allen went 15-for-21 for 237 yards with the touchdown, and one interception passing while adding two rushing scores on the ground. In the win, he became the first player in NFL history with four consecutive 40+ total touchdown seasons and extended his NFL record for consecutive games with a passing and rushing touchdown to 11.

“It’s tough because when you’re playing a team with nothing to lose, that’s a dangerous team. We gutted it out and we found a way,” Allen said to the press. “This is our playoffs. It didn’t matter how we get them done, just get them done.”

And the Bills did just that, though it wasn’t easy.

L.A. had a new coach and backup quarterback, which made it a challenge to prepare for and defend their own respective attack.

“(The Chargers) were doing some things that they hadn’t shown (this season). They came in well-prepared,” head coach Sean McDermott said. “I thought our guys settled in and responded. We did a good job in the red zone and had some big plays on third down to help us out.”

Ultimately, the Chargers got the short end of the stick thanks to a four-minute drill to run the clock down, with all three phases executing to secure the win. The offense did their part managing the clock, and K Tyler Bass secured the winning points on a field goal. Buffalo’s defense then sealed the victory by closing out the Chargers on their final drive with a sack by safety Ed Oliver followed by a failed lateral attempt to end the game.

“Just trusted our guys go make big plays,” Allen noted, via NFL Network. “Stefon Diggs on third down making some big conversions, Tyler Bass kicking a field goal in the end, and then Ed Oliver with the sack to end it, essentially. So, just trusting our guys to make plays, and we did tonight.”

Buffalo moved from the eighth playoff spot up into the sixth spot in the AFC playoff picture, thanks to their win and a loss by the Cincinnati Bengals (8-7) to the Pittsburgh Steelers.

If they win out in their final two games against the Patriots and Dolphins, the team will punch their ticket to the postseason. If the Dolphins lose just one of their remaining games against the Cowboys, Ravens, and Bills, Buffalo wins the division.

Chargers don’t hire Bills’ Brian Daboll

Chargers hire Brandon Staley.

Mom Brian Daboll is going to grab some KC barbecue next week and that’s it.

Daboll, the offensive coordinator of the Buffalo Bills, will be in Kansas City facing the Chiefs next week in the AFC Championship game. In addition, he will not be in Los Angeles in September.

According to NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero, the Chargers are not going to hire Daboll as their next head coach. The choice is Brandon Staley, the Rams’ offensive coordinator, by the Bolts.

Daboll had interviewed for the job last week and many Bills’ faithful thought Daboll would land the job. Evidently he is not. Daboll only interviewed with the Chargers and New York Jets thus far this offseason. Both teams have since hired coaches.

Daboll could still interview for other gigs but thus far, he’ll be staying in Buffalo.

Stay tuned to Bills Wire for the latest updates.

ESPN pegs Bills’ Brian Daboll ‘favorite’ for Chargers job

ESPN’s Adam Schefter called Buffalo Bills offensive coordinator Brian Daboll the ‘favorite’ for Los Angeles Chargers job.

In regard to keeping their offensive coordinator around, the Bills got some good news this week. Their AFC East divisional rival in the Jets hired a guy named Robert Saleh… not their man, Brian Daboll.

Phew, a slight exhale for a second.

Now we’re back at square one.

According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter on Saturday, Daboll has “emerged as a, if not the, favorite to land” the Chargers’ vacant head coaching position. The Bolts fired former Bills offensive coordinator Anthony Lynn following the 2020 regular season.

Per the report, nine folks have been interviewed for the Chargers job, including Daboll, who’s only had one reported interview for the job so far.

Interestingly, Schefter does cover his track a bit later in the report.

He wrote, while explaining the rules of interviewing head-coaching candidates that are employed by teams still in the postseason:

If the Bills lose, Daboll can meet with the Chargers whenever he wants and accept the job as their head coach if offered.

The key phrase we’re bringing to light is “if offered.”

The explanation goes on to say if the Bills win, Daboll can’t do anything with the Chargers until after Buffalo is eliminated from the playoffs. Previously with the Chargers, we last heard that Daboll interviewed for that job last weekend, along with the Jets’ previously vacant spot.

Schefter goes on to mention in his report that Daboll has desirable “traits the Chargers are looking for in their next head coach,” pointing to him being an offensive-minded coach who helped with Bills quarterback Josh Allen’s growth. Justin Herbert is the Bolts’ QB.

ESPN specifically mentioning the update on Daboll certainly could be significant. With the way reporting goes in the modern-day NFL, Schefter is much more connected to teams, agents, players and coaches than anyone locally.

Things could change… but this is one tough pill to swallow for those wanting Daboll to stick in Buffalo.

Recently Daboll was also connected twice to the Eagles’ head-coaching search via “interest” from the team, but hasn’t actually had an interview with them reported. In related news, Bills defensive coordinator Leslie Frazier is scheduled to interview with the Texans on Sunday, per reports.

Stay tuned to Bills Wire for all head-coaching search updates involving the Buffalo coaching staff.

Chargers request interview with Bills’ Brian Daboll

Buffalo Bills offensive coordinator Brian Daboll set to interview for Los Angeles Chargers head coach position.

The Los Angeles Chargers are the second team on the board for Brian Daboll’s services.

According to NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero, the Bolts requested permission from the Bills to interview the offensive coordinator as the search to find their next head coach began on Monday. Another former Bills offensive coordinator, Anthony Lynn, was fired as the Chargers head coach following the 2020 season.

In 2020, Lynn led the Bolts to a 7-9 record and oversaw rookie QB Justin Herbert’s development into a top prospect. That record also included a four-game winning streak to end the year. Evidently that was not enough to retain his job. Lynn signed a one-year extension this past offseason.

Lynn ends his four-year stint with the Chargers with a 33-31 regular-season record and a 1-1 postseason mark.

Daboll, a western New York native, has been tied to the Chargers’ opening because of Tom Telesco. The Los Angeles general manager is also a western New York native. Both attended St. Francis High School.

Daboll also oversaw the development of Buffalo quarterback Josh Allen in 2020.

As of Tuesday, the only other team to request permission from the Bills to interview Daboll was the Jets.

Bills’ Brian Daboll is favorite to become Chargers head coach

Buffalo Bills offensive coordinator Brian Daboll is the favorite to become the next coach of the Los Angeles Chargers.

(Update: 8:32 a.m.): Late on Tuesday evening news dropped which indicated that the Chargers had requested to interview Daboll.

At time of initial writing, the Bolts had not done so.

Details:

Chargers request interview with Bills’ Brian Daboll

Previous coverage:

The Los Angeles Chargers got rid of one former Buffalo Bills offensive coordinator on Monday. Despite a 33-31 record in four seasons, the Bolts fired Anthony Lynn.

While the search for his replacement has barely started… the won’t hold Sportsbooks back.

According to Chargers Wire, the opening favorite to become the Chargers’ next head coach is the guy that replaced Lynn in Buffalo eventually, Brian Daboll.

Daboll (+250) and Panthers offensive coordinator Joe Brady (+300) are the odds on favorite via SportsBetting.Ag, followed by Chiefs offensive coordinator Eric Bieniemy (+700) and Patriots offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels (+700).

At this point, there has yet to be a report of the Chargers planning to interview Daboll. But to see that news drop in the near future won’t be very surprising. Daboll is likely the favorite because he has helped develop Buffalo QB Josh Allen into one of the top quarterbacks in the NFL and an MVP candidate in only Year 3 of his professional career.

Allen tallied 46 touchdowns this season and nearly 5,000 all purpose yards.  The Chargers spot a roster highlighted by rookie quarterback Justin Herbert.

An old friend doesn’t hurt, too.

Tom Telesco is the Chargers general manager leading the search for their next coach. He’s a St. Francis High School graduate from western New York, as is Daboll.

As of early Tuesday, only the Jets have reportedly asked for permission to interview Daboll for their vacant head coaching gig

Former Bills coach Anthony Lynn fired by Chargers

Former Buffalo Bills coach Anthony Lynn fired by the Los Angeles Chargers on Monday.

The Chargers parted ways with head coach Anthony Lynn on Monday, according to Chargers Wire. Prior to joining Los Angeles ahead of the 2017 season, Lynn flew up the coaching ranks for with the Buffalo Bills in 2016.

Starting the 2016 season as Buffalo’s running backs coach, Lynn was promoted to offensive coordinator, replacing Greg Roman, and then was tabbed the Bills’ interim head coach following Rex Ryan’s dismissal. Lynn went on to interview for the Bills’ vacancy after the season, but Buffalo opted for current head coach Sean McDermott.

Lynn ends his four-year stint with the Chargers with a 33-31 regular-season record and a 1-1 postseason mark.

Bills LB AJ Klein named AFC Defensive Player of the Week

Buffalo Bills linebacker AJ Klein named AFC Defensive Player of the Week for Week 12.

Buffalo Bills linebacker AJ Klein was named the AFC’s Defensive Player of the Week by the NFL for his effort in his team’s 27-17 win over the Los Angeles Chargers.

Klein had 14 tackles, a career-high, to lead the Bills, while adding three of those tackles for loss, with 1.5 sacks and a pass breakup. In Klein, Buffalo has their second AFC Defensive Player of the Week Award for this season.

The first was defensive end Jerry Hughes in Week 7. In addition, quarterback Josh Allen won the Offensive Player of the Week Award in Week 2 and Week 9.

Klein’s play has recently been praised after a tough start to the year. He’s seen significant playing time throughout the year filling in for the injured Matt Milano. So far in 2020, Klein has 58 tackles, two forced fumbles, two passes defended and five sacks, which more thank doubles his previous single-season, career-high.

Anatomy of a Play: Tre’Davious White reads Justin Herbert’s mind

Buffalo Bills cornerback Tre’Davious White turns in perhaps the play of the game with this interception of rookie QB Justin Herbert.

It has been an up-and-down season for Buffalo Bills cornerback Tre’Davious White. Considered by most to be one of the top cornerbacks in the league entering 2020, White has been managing back and lower body injuries this season, and has not turned in the kind of campaign that Bills fans and the cornerback himself were probably hoping for. But if the Bills do go on to win the AFC East, their narrow win Sunday over the Los Angeles Chargers will be a reason why, and it was White who turned in perhaps the play of the game, reading the mind of rookie quarterback Justin Herbert.

In this breakdown, you’ll see White read Herbert’s intentions almost immediately after the snap, and then jump a route working from the other side of the field from his alignment as a Cover 3 cornerback on the outside:

This is a tremendous bit of football savvy and awareness from the cornerback, and it is plays like this that make him one of the best in the NFL.

7 studs and 4 duds in Bills’ 27-17 win over Chargers

Studs and duds from the Buffalo Bills’ Week 12 win over the Los Angeles Chargers.

The Buffalo Bills are putting their final reviews on their latest matchup, this one being their recent 27-17 win over the Los Angeles Chargers in Week 12.

In the effort, we saw the Bills let another opponent get close to them in the end, but, Buffalo (8-3) pulled it off. In doing so, we saw a bit of an unorthodox style of success for the Bills in terms of their 2020 season.

After looking at the tape and letting the dust settle, here are seven studs and four duds from the Bills in their win over the Bolts:

Studs

Buffalo linebacker A.J. Klein (Gannett photo)

DE Jerry Hughes

Jerry Hughes had another one of his patented under the surface big games for the Bills. He did have a noticeable half sack, but he also added four tackles, two of which were for loss, and he set the edge very well a few times against the run. Hughes also had the highest grade of any Bills defender against the Bolts in Week 12, according to Pro Football Focus‘ grading system.

LB AJ Klein

The star from this one, AJ Klein was named Bills Wire’s Player of the Game. Since being unleashed as a weapon to try and track down opposing quarterbacks, Klein’s thrived for the Bills. He had 1.5 sacks with two quarterback hits and an impressive 3.5 tackles for loss. Klein certainly got after opposing running backs very quick as well and at least twice, single-handedly, stopped the Chargers on third down via a pass breakup and tackle for loss.

RB Devin Singletary

Devin Singletary and Buffalo’s rushing game, overall, had their best game-to-date in Week 12. Singletary personally had 72 rushing yards, a 7.5 per carry average, and added three catches for 20 yards. Singletary did this despite playing in 40 percent of snaps on offense.

Bills wide receiver Gabriel Davis. Credit: Rich Barnes-USA TODAY Sports

WR Gabriel Davis

Without wide receiver John Brown in the lineup, the Bills showed opposing teams will get a lot of Gabriel Davis in the coming weeks. Both Davis and Stefon Diggs played in all but two snaps on Buffalo’s offense against the Chargers. With those, Davis made a ridiculous 44-yard contested catch and added another 20-yard touchdown catch. He led Buffalo with 79 total receiving yards.

CB Tre’Davious White

On a crossing route, Jalen Guyton beat Tre’Davious White in this one, as did Mike Williams on a fourth-down contested catch. But sometimes a play is just so clutch it outshines all of those. In general, White had few mistakes, but his interception in the second half was as big as they come. He broke off of his coverage, read a rookie QB’s eyes, and made the interception just moments after the Bills turned the ball over on offense.

DT Ed Oliver

Ed Oliver is starting to come into form. Like White, a clutch turnover via a forced fumble on Chargers quarterback Justin Herbert. That came right after he pretty much gift wrapped three points to the Bolts via two penalties. Good mini redemption story there. In addition to his hard stats, Oliver earned a career-high day from PFF. His overall grade of 80.7 tied a career-best and his pass rush grade of 90.8 was the best he’s had.

RB Zack Moss

Like Singletary, Moss, who played in the other 60 percent of Buffalo’s snaps on offense, had a good outing. He totaled 59 rushing yards and a 6.6 yards per carry average. But he certainly is that “changeup” from Singletary. While Singletary was very impressive with his one-cut approach to gaining yards, Moss bowled forward for his. Per PFF, Moss had 52 of his 59 rushing yards after contact. That’s insane to think about.
