Rockets star Jalen Green focused on ‘three great players’ in 2022 draft

“We have the third overall pick (and) there are three great players,” Jalen Green says of Houston’s draft approach. “Let’s build. Come on.”

Houston Rockets general manager Rafael Stone has said that he and his staff will be open-minded with the No. 3 overall pick in the 2022 NBA draft, including the consideration of potential trade scenarios.

But it doesn’t sound like rising star Jalen Green, who was drafted No. 2 in the 2021 first round, is expecting a curveball. In a newly released podcast with Bill Simmons, Green says the Rockets already reached out to him to ask about his thoughts regarding the third overall selection.

“I got asked,” Green said. “They checked with me, for sure. We have the third overall pick. There are three great players. Let’s build. Come on.”

The top-three prospects on most draft boards are three bigs: Gonzaga’s Chet Holmgren, Auburn’s Jabari Smith, and Duke’s Paolo Banchero.

Green endorsed the draft model from the perspective of team building. “I like the home-grown stuff,” Green told Simmons. “Chemistry, everybody playing together, knowing their roles. Stuff like that.”

As of now, it seems Green is strongly under the impression that Houston will be using that third pick. The full episode can be listened to below.

Jalen Green, Bill Simmons clear the air in newly released podcast

Jalen Green responds to Bill Simmons: “When I saw it, I was like, ‘Damn, I don’t know him. What did I do to him?’ I don’t know where this is coming from. But, everybody’s going to talk.”

The bizarre saga involving veteran NBA scribe Bill Simmons and Jalen Green, which led to a sarcastic shoutout by the Rockets star after he was named to the All-Rookie First Team, seems to be coming to an end.

On Tuesday morning, Simmons released a new podcast episode featuring a guest interview with Green. While most of the discussion was about basketball, they did briefly discuss the events of recent weeks.

“When I saw it, I was like, ‘Damn, I don’t know him. What did I do to him?’ I don’t know where this is coming from,” Green told Simmons, an NBA awards voter who did not vote Green to the first team. Simmons’ initial explanation included a profane remark directed at Green.

“But, everybody’s going to talk,” Green said. “I’m used to it, seeing things like that, people talking in general. I never took it too personal. I started making a joke out of it on Twitter. Laughed about it. It’s all good.”

Simmons insisted that his original remark was made in jest.

“F–k Jalen Green,” Simmons said on April 13. “I don’t care you’re scoring 40 points and your team’s 19-60. Congratulations. Herb Jones is like guarding dudes in real games. Now, the Houston people are going to be mad at me. I’m sorry. I like winning players, I’m sorry. Jalen Green will get there, it’s just that team was 21-61 this year or whatever.”

Simmons’ remarks were widely criticized in the coming weeks, including by Golden State’s Draymond Green and Philadelphia’s Joel Embiid.

While Simmons did not directly apologize to Green in Tuesday’s podcast, his rhetoric and tone were much more positive than in recent weeks. As a result, Green sounds satisfied with putting this controversy in the past.

“I’m glad we got to get on and talk about that,” Green concluded.

Bill Simmons thinks the Thunder should pick Jabari Smith Jr. second overall in 2022 NBA draft

“I think Jabari wins the lottery if OKC takes him.”

The Ringer’s Bill Simmons recently expressed his hope that he wants Auburn forward Jabari Smith Jr. drafted to the Thunder due to his fit with the team. Simmons believes that a core of Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, Josh Giddey and Jabari Smith Jr. could really be a special trio.

“I think Jabari wins the lottery if OKC takes him. I think he’s super competitive, really gives a shit,” said Simmons. “He has Giddey in his life for the next 10 years. Just that alone — not to mention the SGA piece. That would be a nice fit.”

Smith Jr. is currently being mocked by most to go first overall to the Orlando Magic, with Chet Holmgren going second to the Thunder. It seems like those two are going to be the top two picks of this draft with the order still undecided. The Thunder recently won the 2022 NBA draft lottery by jumping from fourth to second overall in the lottery.

The full soundbite can be watched here, where Simmons also talks about Thunder general manager Sam Presti and his unorthodox approach to NBA drafts.

Jalen Green put Bill Simmons on blast after making the NBA All-Rookie Team

Jalen kept the receipts

The Rockets might have been one of the NBA’s worst teams, but that doesn’t mean they didn’t have their bright spots.

Take Jalen Green — Houston’s No. 2 overall pick in the 2021 draft.

As a 20-year-old NBA freshman, Green averaged 17 points, three boards, and nearly three assists a game. He did this while shooting 34 percent from three-point land. It’s not superstar production, but it is stellar for a rookie just getting their feet wet in the Association.

Green was rewarded for that effort on Wednesday when he was named to the NBA All-Rookie First-Team. And after getting this illustrious honor, Green decided to put one of his more notable critics, The Ringer’s Bill Simmons, on blast.

Simmons made waves in late April when he said he did not vote for Green on the All-Rookie First-Team. He even took it a profane step further while explaining why:

More from Rookie Wire:

“(Expletive) Jalen Green!” Simmons said on April 13. “I don’t care you’re scoring 40 points and your team is 19-60. Congratulations. Herb Jones is guarding dudes in real games. Now, the Houston people are going to be mad at me. I’m sorry. I like winning players, I’m sorry. Jalen Green will get there, it’s just that team was 21-61 this year or whatever.”

Green’s response toward Simmons after getting his rookie honor is totally understandable. That he took the high road — seemingly implying he used Simmons as motivation — makes it all the sweeter.

Bill Simmons suggests that the Lakers should go after Thunder GM Sam Presti

Bill Simmons believes Sam Presti could fix the Lakers

During an episode if The Ringer’s podcast, “The Bill Simmons Show,” Bill Simmons and Sports Illustrated’s Chris Mannix talked about the possibility of the Los Angeles Lakers pursuing Oklahoma City Thunder general manager Sam Presti. Both agreed that it would be the best course of action but doubts that Lakers owner Jeanie Buss would go after Presti and give him full control of the franchise.

“The worst-case scenario for all those teams is if Jeanie (Buss) looks around one day, as she’s having people on the deck with all her advisers — all of whom are just either taking money from her or whatever. And she looks around and goes, ‘Maybe I get that guy, Sam Presti from Oklahoma City? And I’ll just pay him $50 million a year. And he could just run this and fix this.’ That would be a worst-case scenario for the league. And Presti’s just sitting there now as, you know, Masai (Ujiri) is in Toronto. The Boston situation seems pretty stable at this point. Clippers are stable. Golden State’s stable. If you’re just talking about like, who’s the big-ticket name out there that could immediately fix your franchise? I would say it’s Presti. I don’t know if he’d want to work for the Lakers. He grew up in Massachusetts. But it’s kind of hard for me to believe she wouldn’t look at this and go, ‘Our team can’t find or keep talent. We made wrong decisions pretty much all the time except for the Anthony Davis trade which, by the way, we gave up more assets in that trade than anyone’s ever given up in an NBA trade ever. Maybe I need to bring somebody in who actually knows what they’re doing.'”

Mannix responded to this by agreeing that hiring Presti would solve a lot of the Lakers’ problems but says he has a hard time seeing it actually happen.

“I don’t know if he’d want to work there either, but I think another opportunity, a big one, would appeal to him. A whole truckload of money — which the Lakers could offer — would appeal to him. I’m 100% sure that if Sam Presti took a job like that, he would only take it if he could pink-slip everybody in the organization and he could tell every member of the Buss family, besides Jeanie, that they should lose his number and they do not have access to the front office and their input is no longer required.

“Owners always have input. Like Jeanie Buss should have input in what goes on with that team. Every owner does including, by the way, Clay Bennett in Oklahoma City. So that’s not an issue. But like everybody else? You’re gone. I’m building out my own staff. I’m doing my own thing. And I’m going to do this my way. Which I’m not so sure that that Jeanie Buss would would give. She seems satisfied with this.”

Presti is one of the longest tenured general managers in the league, being on the helm since 2007. When asked about his long-term future with the franchise during his exit interview, Presti alluded to the fact that he’s not going to be the Thunder GM forever and said that one day, someone else would take his place — which, duh, that’s obvious; Presti is right that he literally won’t be the only GM in Thunder history. But it seems like that Presti is committed to seeing the rebuild through at the very least.

This also isn’t the only time Presti and the Lakers have been mouthed in the same sentence this year as LeBron James praised him during All-Star weekend by calling him the “real MVP” of the team due to his drafting history.

Nonetheless, I have a hard time seeing Presti leave to go to the Lakers. I doubt Presti would want to waste so much time politicking with Buss to curry favors when he has ultimate power in Oklahoma City.

Add Golden State Warriors star Draymond Green to the growing list of NBA voices who are speaking out against Bill Simmons’ harsh rhetoric involving Houston Rockets rookie Jalen Green.

In profane remarks on a recent podcast from The Ringer, Simmons said he did not vote Green to the 2021-22 All-Rookie first team despite his electric and historic scoring stretch to end the 2021-22 season. Furthermore, Simmons suggested that Green is not a winning player.

In an Instagram story, Golden State’s Green wrote:

How is it that this guy has a voice in deciding if Jalen Green will qualify for a super-max deal? He clearly says F Him, which sounds very personal, by the way. But he has a say in what someone earns? What work has he done in his life that qualifies him to have a say in an NBA player’s salary?

Draymond tagged the NBA at the conclusion of his remarks.

In this particular case, because the debate is over the All-Rookie team and not the All-NBA team, there are no direct salary implications. However, Green’s larger point is questioning the personal nature of Simmons’ remarks and whether that is appropriate for an NBA awards voter — particularly given the implicit endorsement that the league is giving to those awards by allowing some to be tied to player salaries.

In his comments, Simmons appeared to deem New Orleans rookie Herb Jones, who is playing in the 2022 NBA playoffs, as more of a winning player than Green. Then again, Jones joined a team with big-name veterans like Brandon Ingram and C.J. McCollum to carry the load and take on larger responsibilities, allowing the 23-year-old to be a specialist.

Green, on the other hand, was a 19-year-old joining a Houston squad that had the league’s worst record from the previous season — and that was before shutting down five-time All-Star guard John Wall!

In terms of a “winning” comparison: Apples, meet oranges.

‘F–k Jalen Green’: Bill Simmons put on blast by Houston fans after awards remark

NBA awards voter Bill Simmons had harsh words for Jalen Green on a new podcast, and Rockets fans quickly pushed back on his flawed argument.

Houston Rockets guard Jalen Green went on a historic scoring streak late in his rookie season, and his head coach, Stephen Silas, is quite convinced that Green belongs on the 2021-22 All-Rookie First Team.

Whether Green actually receives that honor, however, is an open question. Based on media ballots thus far, Detroit’s Cade Cunningham, Cleveland’s Evan Mobley, Toronto’s Scottie Barnes, and Orlando’s Franz Wagner appear to be locks, with the fifth spot contested between Green, Oklahoma City’s Josh Giddey, and Herb Jones of the Pelicans.

The Ringer’s Bill Simmons, who actually has an NBA awards vote, went with Jones and explicitly attacked Green on his podcast.

“F–k Jalen Green,” Simmons said on the episode.

There are a number of problems with this argument, of course. For starters, Green doesn’t have a veteran next to him in Houston anywhere near the caliber of Brandon Ingram (a recent All-Star) or CJ McCollum — and it’s not as though the Pelicans (36-46) were a “winning team,” either. Furthermore, Simmons doesn’t seem to be using that same “record” standard for rookies from the Pistons (23-59) or Magic (22-60).

As a result, Rockets fans on Twitter pushed back strongly against Simmons after Wednesday’s show went live. Scroll on for the best replies.
