‘Bing Bong’ received votes to become mayor of NYC but so did Trae Young

In order to get elected mayor of New York City, Eric Adams had some unexpected foes he had to earn more votes than along the way.

Eric Adams received more than 70 percent of the voting share and had little trouble winning the election on Nov. 2. But now that results for the write-in candidates were released for public record, we got to see some of the ways that New Yorkers had fun with the voting process.

At least for basketball fans, when looking at the results, the most interesting write-in votes were cast for “Bing Bong” to become the next mayor of New York City.

Bing Bong, as we learned back in October, has become the rallying cry for the New York Knicks so far this season. It originated from a wild video from the folks at Sidetalk NYC and it sounds like the noise the closing doors make on the subways across the city.

Fans have turned the phrase into a meme and even players on the team, like Evan Fournier, have tweeted about it.

So even though we don’t know its political affiliation or the platform that it would have run on, we do know Bing Bong at least received multiple votes — including one likely vote from NYC band Rebounder — for political office.

Considering the popularity of Bing Bong across the city, it’s no surprise that folks took the joke to the ballot. But it was more surprising to see Atlanta Hawks guard Trae Young earn a vote.

The current mayor of New York City, Bill de Blasio, publicly told Young to stop “hunting fouls” because it’s not the right way to play basketball.

Young, whose Hawks defeated the Knicks in the first round of the playoffs this past season, immediately became an NYC villain with theatrical antics like taking a bow after winning or showing up at Madison Square Garden for an appearance on WWE’s Smackdown.

However, despite the criticism from de Blasio, at least one person in New York City went all the way to the polls just to write Young’s name down.

Meanwhile, in the world of baseball, two players on the New York Mets got some nods.

Mets stars Jacob deGrom and Pete Alonso were not campaigning for the position. But as noted by Newsday reporter Tim Healey, both players also received consideration.

Other notable New York sports figures to receive votes include Knicks wing RJ Barrett, Yankees outfielder Aaron Judge and Jets quarterback Mike White.

A change in the New York City Mayor’s office could pave the way for Kyrie Irving to return to the Brooklyn Nets in 2022. Mayor-elect Eric Adams plans to “revisit” the city’s COVID-19 vaccine mandate rules once he takes office, according to the New York Post. “We need to revisit how we are going to address the vaccine mandates. Now, I stated I did not want to Monday-morning-quarterback the mayor [Bill de Blasio]. This is his time to be the man, he has to make the decisions,” Adams said on MSNBC’s “Morning Joe,” per the Post.

More on this storyline

He added on CNN’s “New Day” that “I hope the mayor — and I am encouraging him to do that — to sit down with unions and come to a resolution. And if he doesn’t, if this is still going to January, I’m going to sit down with them and we’re going to get this resolved.” The Nets last month banned Irving, a West Orange native, from practices and games because he’s not vaccinated against COVID-19. The team has said he can only return as a “full participant,” meaning either he gets vaccinated or New York’s regulations change. Irving is projected to lose about half of his $35 million salary this season as a result, but still gets paid for road games. -via Newark Star-Ledger / November 3, 2021
Mayor-elect Eric Adams vowed to “revisit” the COVID-19 vaccine mandate for municipal workers when he takes office and reach a “resolution” on the matter, as he took an election victory lap Wednesday morning. During a series of media appearances the day after he handily beat Republican opponent Curtis Sliwa, the Democrat also repeatedly promised he wouldn’t step on Mayor Bill de Blasio’s toes regarding the controversial jab order. “We need to revisit how we are going to address the vaccine mandates. Now, I stated I did not want to Monday-morning-quarterback the mayor. This is his time to be the man, he has to make the decisions,” Adams said on MSNBC’s “Morning Joe.” -via New York Post / November 3, 2021
As Kyrie Irving remains away from the Nets, refusing to adhere to the city’s COVID-19 vaccine mandate, the team has moved on without him. Tuesday afternoon, in an ironic twist, the Nets and Liberty teamed up with Gov. Kathy Hochul to offer free tickets to anyone who gets vaccinated at Barclays Center — which Irving has been unwilling to do. “I think the message is that the team itself supports vaccinations,” Hochul said, when asked directly about Irving’s decision not to get vaccinated. “The vast, vast, vast majority of their players are vaccinated, and they’re here to support making sure that members of the community are vaccinated. That’s the takeaway from today’s event.” -via New York Post / November 3, 2021

New York major Bill de Blasio wore a Nets jersey to a press conference, and Twitter had so many jokes

This is QUITE the look for mayor Bill de Blasio.

New York mayor Bill de Blasio is doing whatever he can to encourage his constituents to get vaccinated. And he’s going to desperate lengths. To be clear, desperate times call for measures. We’re still in a pandemic. But while his intentions are very, very good, his efforts are still hilarious.

He made a truly bizarre video of himself eating burger and fries to promote a free Shake Shack meal for vaccinated New Yorkers. And on Tuesday, de Blasio tried a different angle. At the vaccination sites outside Barclay’s Center, the home of the Brooklyn Nets, people can get playoff tickets with their shot. (There are a limited number of tickets.)

To promote this initiative, de Blasio went to a press conference wearing a Nets jersey and hat. It was … quite the look, which led to a lot of jokes on Twitter.

Be right back, gotta go pick up my Shake Shack burger.

New York City plans to cancel Trumps’ contract to run Ferry Point Golf Course

Trump Organization vows to fight Mayor Bill de Blasio’s plan to end contract, another blow to President Donald Trump’s golf organization

Mayor Bill de Blasio announced Wednesday that the City of New York is taking steps to terminate the Trump Organization’s contract to run the city’s Ferry Point Golf Course – also known as Trump Golf Links at Ferry Point – as well as contracts to operate the Central Park Carousel and two skating rinks.

The decision came a week after a mob of President Donald Trump’s supporters stormed the U.S. Capitol while a joint session of Congress prepared to formalize the 2020 election results favoring Joe Biden. Five people died in the assault on the Capitol, including Capitol Police officer Brian Sicknick.

The Jack Nicklaus-designed Ferry Point opened in 2015 in the Bronx. Built on an old landfill, it ranks No. 2 in New York on Golfweek’s Best Courses You Can Play state-by-state list for public-access layouts. The course sits near the Whitestone Bridge and offers views of Manhattan.

“The President incited a rebellion against the United States government that killed five people and threatened to derail the constitutional transfer of power,” de Blasio said in a statement announcing the city’s plan to cancel the contracts. “The City of New York will not be associated with those unforgivable acts in any shape, way or form, and we are immediately taking steps to terminate all Trump Organization contracts.”

The statement by the city said it could take several months to terminate the contract at Ferry Point. The other contracts can be ended sooner.

Eric Trump, the outgoing President’s son who has been part of management for Trump Organization after his father ascended to the Presidency in 2016, replied with a statement to several media outlets, including NBC News.

“Yet another example of Mayor de Blasio’s blatant disregard for the facts,” Eric Trump said. “The City of New York has no legal right to end our contracts, and if they elect to proceed, they will owe the Trump Organization over $30 million. This is nothing more than political discrimination, an attempt to infringe on the first amendment and we plan to fight vigorously.”

Counting Ferry Point, Trump owns or operates 19 golf properties around the world, stretching from Scotland to Dubai. Twelve of those are in the U.S.

The mayor’s announcement wasn’t the first blow to the Trump Organization’s golf operations since the Jan. 6 riot. The PGA of America announced Sunday that it was removing the 2022 PGA Championship from Trump National Golf Club in Westchester, New York. The R&A, which governs the game in much of the world away from the United States, followed with a statement that Trump Turnberry in Scotland would not host the British Open any time soon.
