Ohio State No. 4 seed in Big Ten Women’s Basketball Tournament bracket

Let’s get ready to cheer on the Lady Bucks this weekend. #GoBucks

The calendar officially flipped to March today and you know what that means, right? Yes, it means sleet takes the place of snow, and kite season gets ushered in, but more importantly, it means some tournament basketball is about to take place in an arena and on a television set near you soon.

March. Madness.

The Big Ten men still have another weekend to finish things up, but not the women. They have finished the regular season and are ready to get a little March Mayhem going in earnest this weekend in Minneapolis, Minnesota.

The Ohio State women roared out to a historic start for the program and were all the way up to No. 2 at one point in the rankings, but have slid back a little because of injury and stiff competition. They will enter the Big Ten women’s basketball tournament as a No. 4 seed and a double bye. The Lady Bucks are set to get things cookin’ on Friday. They’ll play the winner of No. 5 seed Michigan and whoever outlasts each other between No. 12 seed Minnesota and No. 13 seed Penn State.

The rest of the Big Ten women’s tournament bracket is below, and it should be one whale of a conference tournament with as many as five teams having a legitimate shot at making a run to the championship.

Ohio State’s game is set to be played on Friday at roughly 2 p.m. ET, or 25 minutes after the game ahead of it at 11:30 a.m ET. Indiana is the No. 1 seed, Iowa the No. 2 seed, and Maryland checks in as the No. 3 seed.

Here’s to rooting on the Buckeyes and hoping they can regain that form we saw earlier in the year.

Big Ten keeping football championship in Indianapolis

The Big Ten is keeping its football championship game in the perfect spot through 2024.

For as long as the game has existed, the Big Ten’s football championship game has been played in LucasOil Stadium in Indianapolis. After an announcement on future championship sites on Wednesday, the Big Ten confirmed that will remain the case for another three seasons.

The Big Ten announced it will continue to play its football championship game in the home of the Indianapolis Colts through the 2024 season, giving the next three Big Ten football title games to LucasOil Stadium in Indianapolis. While there have been discussions about exploring other potential venues for the championship game, keeping the game in Indianapolis is perhaps the best option for the Big Ten.

Indianapolis is widely regarded as a terrific host city, and its central location serves the Big Ten well. Having the dome handy is also nice, although some fans would love to see just one Big Ten title game played outside in the Big Ten elements. But, all things considered, playing on a neutral field in a controlled environment allows for the best quality product for the Big Ten and all parties involved.

Penn State has appeared in the Big Ten championship game once, topping Wisconsin in 2016 to earn a berth in the Rose Bowl Game. The Big Ten has played a conference championship game every season since 2011, when the conference expanded to 12 members with the addition of Nebraska and split into two divisions, the Legends and Leaders Divisions.

Men’s and women’s basketball tournament sites confirmed too

The Big Ten also confirmed its future plans for the men’s and women’s basketball tournaments. The 2023 women’s basketball tournament will be played in Minneapolis, Minnesota at the Target Center. Both the men’s and women’s tournaments will be played in the same location the following season, in 2024. This will mark the first time either tournament has been played in Minnesota.

The 2023 men’s basketball tournament is already scheduled to be played in Chicago at the United Center. The Big Ten men’s basketball tournament has been played in Chicago 10 times since 1998, including the first four years the tournament was held beginning in 1998. Chicago and Indianapolis have alternating hosting duties for the tournament throughout the history of the Big Ten tournament, with Washington D.C. and New York City each hosting the tournament in back-to-back years in 2017 and 2018, respectively.

Lady Lions go one-and-done in women’s Big Ten Basketball Tournament

Penn State closed out its 2021-22 season with a blowout loss to Rutgers in the Big Ten women’s basketball tournament.

Penn State’s time in the women’s Big Ten basketball tournament ended just as soon as it started. Penn State came up short in a first-round matchup against Rutgers on Wednesday afternoon in Indianapolis, losing 75-50. Penn State’s season concludes with a record of 11-18 overall, and 5-13 in the Big Ten.

Penn State trailed by six points at halftime but Rutgers pulled ahead by a wide margin in the third quarter by outscoring Penn State 23-11. Rutgers put the game well out of reach with a big 11-2 run to start the fourth quarter, by which time the damage had been done.

Leilani Kapinus recorded a double-double in the losing effort and Makenna Marisa added 15 points to finish off her impressive season.

Penn State’s season may have ended with a thud against Rutgers, but it does so with an improved win total from the previous season. And for the second straight season, Penn State improved its win total under head coach Carolyn Kieger. Penn State won just seven games in Kieger’s first season since being hired away from Marquette. Each of the past two seasons has tacked on two more wins to the season record.

Those small steps forward may be difficult to respect given the current state of the program overall. Losing by 25 points to the 13-seed in the Big Ten tournament is truly a tough pill to swallow, but we will see what comes next for the program in 2022-23. Kieger’s track record suggests Penn State could be due for a major step forward soon. Kieger won 9 and 12 games in her first two seasons as head coach at Marquette before winning at least 24 games in each of the following three seasons, with back-to-back second-round appearances in the NCAA tournament.

Ohio State women’s basketball beats Michigan, advances to Big Ten Tournament Championship Game

The Ohio State women’s basketball team beat rival Michigan to advance to the Big Ten Tournament Championship Game against Maryland.

Poor Michigan. It just can’t seem to beat Ohio State at anything substantial these days. And so it was again Saturday night when the Buckeyes turned back the Wolverines 66-60 in the semifinal of the Big Ten Women’s Basketball Tournament.

The Buckeyes will now face Maryland on Sunday for the 2019-2020 title, in a year in which its youth has continued to get better as the season has gotten longer in the tooth.

Ohio State controlled the game for a large portion, holding the lead for most of the contest from the 2nd quarter on, but Michigan wouldn’t quite go away. The Wolverines were able to tie it late at 47 points apiece with just seven minutes to go. But then the Buckeyes would go on a run and finish the game at the free-throw line despite the Wolverines getting it to a one-possession game a couple of times.

Five Buckeyes finished in double figures, with Madison Greene leading the way with thirteen points. It’s the second-straight game OSU had five players in double figures on a team that is maturing from multiple spots on the floor.

Tomorrow’s contest will be a rematch of the 2018 Big Ten Tournament Championship when Ohio State was able to take down the Terps. But this time will be more difficult.

Maryland has been the clear class of the conference all season, and OSU has yet to give the No. 1 seed a game this season, losing twice by an average of fifteen points. The Terps have won sixteen straight games.

It’ll all go down at 6 PM Eastern on ESPN2.
