What Iowa fans want from the new Big Ten football schedule

We talked to @HawkeyesWire about Iowa fans’ views of the #B1G football schedule. Three teams emerged as clear priorities.

Iowa football fans are, along with other Big Ten fan bases, waiting for the Big Ten football scheduling announcement to drop. Before the scheduling format is revealed, everyone is wondering what the conference will do. This is, of course, of great interest to USC now that the Trojans are entering the Big Ten. USC and UCLA coaches and players are going to see how their travel schedules will be affected in the coming years. Fans who are planning to attend road games can begin to map out a strategy. It’s all going to be very interesting. For USC fans, it’s going to be brand new.

You might ask: What do various fan bases want from the Big Ten schedule? We asked Hawkeyes Wire editor Josh Helmer for his view of what Iowa fans want. In a discussion which will soon become a podcast — but which, at press time, is still in production — Helmer told us very simply that Iowa fans want their rivalries with Nebraska, Minnesota and Wisconsin to be preserved. If Iowa fans have to deal with a Big Ten schedule in which the Hawkeyes (and other Big Ten teams) get three annual opponents, those are the three schools Hawkeye fans want, according to Helmer.

Later this month, we will release several Iowa-USC podcasts here at Trojans Wire, as our Big Ten tour continues. Also watch for reports and analysis on the Big Ten football scheduling announcement.

What Nebraska fans want from the new Big Ten football schedule

It’s very simple, and it’s not a long list. We talked to @CornhuskersWire for the (perhaps surprisingly) blunt answer.

Some things in life either aren’t complicated or don’t need to be. The Big Ten is about to release its scheduling format for 2024, when USC joins the conference. A lot of fan bases might have several specific demands. They might want the architecture of the new Big Ten schedule to fill several different needs. It’s natural to want a lot of different things from a conference as a relatively new member. Nebraska has been a Big Ten member for under 15 years, so the Huskers are in some ways still adjusting to their surroundings.

You might think Nebraska fans would be very particular about their desires in relationship to the Big Ten schedule announcement. After all, the Huskers left the Big 12 for the Big Ten precisely because they were tired of the University of Texas calling all the shots.

Yet, Nebraska fans don’t seem to want a whole lot from the new Big Ten schedule, at least not according to Cornhuskers Wire editor Evan Bredeson. When we talked to Evan recently, he said Nebraska fans really care about only one thing.

“They want to play Iowa on Black Friday,” Bredeson said.

That’s it. That’s the tweet. That’s all Nebraska fans want. They want that Iowa game on the Friday after Thanksgiving to remain in place.

Some people don’t need a ton of things in order to be satisfied. That’s impressive.

Here’s the full conversation with Cornhuskers Wire, below:

Big Ten to announce 2024 football conference schedule on Thursday

The official finalized Michigan State football 2024 schedule will be announced on Thursday.

The official finalized Michigan State football 2024 schedule will be announced on Thursday.

The Big Ten will announce the 2024 conference schedule and future scheduling model on Thursday afternoon. The schedule will be revealed during a televised event on the Big Ten Network at 4:30 p.m. ET.

The announcement of the 2024 conference schedule is especially notable as it’ll be the first season with USC and UCLA in the Big Ten. It’ll also indicate whether or not the league will move away from the East and West Divisions model — which has long been speculated after the announcement of USC and UCLA joining the league.

Michigan State’s non-conference schedule for 2024 currently includes home games against Florida Atlantic and Louisana and a road game at Boston College. The remaining nine games will be against Big Ten teams.

The Big Ten’s stance on College Football Playoff expansion

Where does the conference stand on CFP expansion?

Big Ten Media Days kicked off on Tuesday afternoon at Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis, and College Football Playoff expansion was among a long list of topics covered with conference commissioner Kevin Warren.

Where does the conference stand on expanding the current four-team structure? Warren’s answer was as clear as day: “I’m 100 percent supportive of College Football Playoff expansion,” Warren told the media in Indianapolis.

“We need to take a holistic view. We need to make sure we protect some of the critical bowl relationships. So as we work through all these, whether it’s automatic qualifier, whatever the case may be, I’m confident as we get these new individuals in the room, get these issues on the table, that we’ll be able to reach some resolution.”

2025 is the soonest the College Football Playoff could implement any changes as the current contract runs until then.

15 schools the Big Ten should consider adding

Should the Big Ten look to turn into a super conference?

With UCLA and USC joining the Big Ten conference earlier this month, the questions turn to where the league goes from here.

Signs in college football are pointing toward a slow buildup of massive conferences, and the Big Ten may be only just beginning their additions.

With the Bruins and Trojans joining in, it’s clear that geography is no longer an obstacle. The bottom line will surpass all in terms of what the conference looks like in a few years.

So, who are the most likely candidates for the Big Ten to add if the conference chooses to go even bigger? In no particular order, here is a look at the best options from across the college sports landscape:

Big Ten announces football and basketball championship game venues through 2024

A look at the host sites for the Big Ten basketball and football championships through 2024

On Wednesday, the Big Ten released the schedule for upcoming championship games in both football and basketball.

The venues are staying mostly the same, although there is a new city in the mix. Minnesota is now one of the sites for Big Ten basketball, as the Target Center will become a host arena.

Lucas Oil Stadium has been the home of the football championship game, and will remain the home through 2024. After that date, the state of Wisconsin could host the Big Ten championship game.

The Packers submitted Lambeau Field as a possible host site for 2025 and the 2027-2030 seasons.

Here is a look at where the basketball and football championship games will be through 2024:

Wisconsin Football Schedule What To Know: Who do the Badgers miss from the Big Ten East Division?

Oh that’s fun … Wisconsin gets to go to Ohio State. And Michigan State to face former Badger-now-Michigan State coach Mel Tucker. And gets a possibly dangerous Maryland team – but that’s coming off a two-week break.

There’s no Michigan or Penn State – that’s obviously a plus – but there’s no Indiana or Rutgers, either.

In West play, Minnesota and Purdue come to Camp Randall, but back-to-back road games against Iowa and Nebraska is rough.

Wisconsin Football Schedule What To Know: It’s all about the road games

There are five road dates, but they’re all a problem.

Going to Ohio State is brutal, and it’s worse when it starts a run of three road games in four weeks. The Badgers always turn the ball over a bazillion times at Northwestern, and that’s followed up by the trip to Michigan State.

Again, the Iowa and Nebraska games on two straight road dates is an issue.

Wisconsin Football Schedule What To Know: What does it all really mean?

Washington State will bring a fun passing game, but the Badgers get to ease into the season with all three non-conference games at home. They get a free pass with that date at Ohio State to follow.

It’s a workable schedule to win the West and get to the Big Ten Championship, but it’s all going to come down to those two road games against Iowa and Nebraska. Win those two, (most likely) get to Indianapolis.

Purdue Football Schedule What To Know: Who do the Boilermakers miss from the Big Ten East Division?

Purdue misses Ohio State, Michigan, and Michigan State, so there’s no whining about not getting Rutgers on the slate.

Not only are three of the biggest and best teams in the Big Ten not on the schedule, but the Penn State game is at home in the opener. Boo hoo – the Boilermakers have to go to Indiana, and Maryland comes to West Lafayette.

In the division, going to Wisconsin and Minnesota hurts, but Iowa is a home game coming off a two-week break.

Purdue Football Schedule What To Know: It’s stretched out nice

If you’re going to go on the road to face a Power Five team, you might as well be going to Syracuse. Indiana State and Florida Atlantic shouldn’t be a problem.

Best of all, there isn’t a clump of road games in a row. Purdue doesn’t have to deal with back-to-back away dates, and it only leaves the great state of Indiana twice after October 1st.

Purdue Football Schedule What To Know: What does it all really mean?

There’s not a whole lot to complain about.

Every Big Ten team has to play a few difficult teams on the road. If Wisconsin and Minnesota are your two most difficult games, you’ve got an okay schedule.

Again, not playing Ohio State, Michigan, and Michigan State is massive, and again, the seven home games mixed through the schedule makes the whole thing manageable.

Long ramble short, it’s not the schedule’s fault if Purdue has a bad year.

Northwestern Football Schedule What To Know: Who do the Wildcats miss from the Big Ten East Division?

Northwestern doesn’t catch a whole lot of breaks in interdivisional play. It misses Michigan and Michigan State (good) along with Indiana and Rutgers (bad).

Also bad – Ohio State. At least the Buckeyes come to Evanston, but the Wildcats have to go to Penn State and Maryland. Making matters worse is that those two are sandwiched around the date with Wisconsin.

Northwestern Football Schedule What To Know: Take a long August trip, stay home in September

Not only does Northwestern get to play in Ireland against Nebraska to start the season, but it gets a week off before diving into a light and creamy non-conference run. Duke, Northern Illinois, and Miami University are all home games before diving back into Big Ten play to start October.

And then there’s a problem …

Northwestern Football Schedule What To Know: What does it all really mean?

Yuck.

The regular season finale against Illinois is winnable, but what kind of shape will the Wildcats be in? There isn’t one sure-thing winnable game from October 1st through Thanksgiving.

Yeah, the non-conference slate isn’t any big deal, and yeah, there are plenty of home games to get up to speed, but Northwestern has five road games in seven dates including a brutal second half run of four road games in five around a home game against Ohio State.

Throw in that Nebraska game, and half the season is away from home – that’s not big-time for a Big Ten program.
