Week 13 Big Ten power rankings, Michigan doesn’t move after big win

Michigan football got a big win over Michigan State last week, how does that game affect the latest Big Ten Power Rankings this week?

[jwplayer EZymdmas-XNcErKyb]

Michigan got a big win over Michigan State last week, winning 44-10 as it was the biggest Big Ten game last week despite the records of both teams. It wasn’t the only huge game in the conference though, as Iowa was able to ruin Minnesota’s undefeated season, and possibly ruin their College Football Playoff chances, along with leaving them in doubt of going to Indianapolis in a few weeks.

We saw some shift among the bottom seven teams in my latest power rankings for the Big Ten, check them out below.

1. OHIO STATE 10-0 (7-0)

Ohio State was supposed to blow out Rutgers this week and while they did win 56-21, the score was closer than many predicted. Quarterback Justin Fields had a great game, going 15/19 for 305 yards and four touchdowns as he led the offense as the passing game was the bread and butter for the offense.

The defense allowed Rutgers to put up 231 yards of offense on them and find the end zone three times. They were given some fits from the Rutgers rushing attack that got 110 yards and two touchdowns on 40 carries. Ohio State takes on Penn State this week as if they win they are going to the Big Ten Championship game.

2. MINNESOTA 9-1 (6-1)

Minnesota doesn’t fall despite losing their first game of the season to Iowa 23-19. Quarterback Tanner Morgan went 25/36 for 368 yards and a touchdown as he led the offense in their efforts to win the game.

The defense had issues with trying to stop Iowa’s passing game, letting their quarterback Nate Stanley go 14/23 for 173 yards and two touchdowns. Their defense held Iowa to 290 yards while their offense put up over 400 yards, but they still couldn’t get the win. They take on Northwestern this week as they try and keep themselves in the driver seat in the Big Ten West.

3. PENN STATE 9-1 (6-1)

Penn State had a tough test this week in Indiana, winning 34-27. Penn State’s ground game was the deciding factor as they scored three times on 45 carries for 192 yards. Running back Journey Brown had 21 carries for 100 yards and a touchdown.

The defense was having issues with Indiana quarterback Peyton Ramsey, letting him go 31/41 for 371 yards and a touchdown, along with 12 carries for 31 yards and two touchdowns. Penn State was able to hold on though and this week’s game defines their season. If Penn State can win against Ohio State, they just need to win their final game and they go to Indianapolis.

4. WISCONSIN 8-2 (5-2)

Wisconsin was struggling at first but ended up pulling away against Nebraska, winning 37-21. Running back Jonathan Taylor had another good game, getting 204 yards and two touchdowns on 25 carries, but he did fumble once.

The Badgers defense allowed almost 500 yards of offense as they were getting gashed by the Nebraska offense. Nebraska ran for 273 yards on 37 carries and they scored twice. Wisconsin takes on Purdue this week as they try and keep their Big Ten Championship hopes alive.

5. MICHIGAN 8-2 (5-2)

Michigan got a huge rivalry win last week as they dominated Michigan State 44-10. Quarterback Shea Patterson had his best game at Michigan ever, going 24/33 for 384 yards with four passing touchdowns. Patterson threw for over 300 yards for the first time at Michigan and the offense finally looked like a well-oiled machine.

The defense was able to hold MSU in check, holding them to just 54 rushing yards on 30 carries. Michigan forced two turnovers and blocked a punt as it was just a dominant game by the defense. Michigan takes on a feisty Indiana team this week as they will have to be on the lookout for a possible upset.

6. IOWA 7-3 (4-3)

Iowa jumps up a spot after upsetting Minnesota 23-19. Iowa was able to run somewhat on the Golden Gophers defense, getting 117 yards and a touchdown on 31 carries.

Iowa’s defense struggled to stop the passing attack from Minnesota, but when it came to stopping the run they did that with ease. They held Minnesota to just 63 yards and a touchdown on 30 carries. Iowa takes on Illinois this week in what could be a solid matchup.

7. INDIANA 7-3 (4-3)

Indiana falls down a spot after coming up short on beating Penn State, losing 34-27. While Ramsey had himself a good game, the running game couldn’t get much going without him. Besides Ramsey’s carries, the running attack for Indiana only got 60 yards on 19 carries, never finding the end zone.

The defense did all they could to stop Penn State’s quarterback Sean Clifford, having him go 11/23 for 179 yards and a touchdown, but let him rush for two touchdowns and 55 yards on 10 carries along with a fumble. Indiana takes on Michigan this week as they look to get a big win for the first time this season.

8. ILLINOIS 6-4 (4-3)

Illinois was on a bye week last week. This week they take on Iowa as they look to improve their bowl stock.

9. PURDUE 4-6 (3-4)

Purdue was on a bye week last week. This week they take on Wisconsin as they look to keep their bowl hopes alive as one more loss knocks them out of the postseason antics.

10. NEBRASKA 4-6 (2-5)

Nebraska gave Wisconsin a scare in the first half, only down 27-14 as quarterback Adrian Martinez had himself a game, going 13/23 for 220 yards with a touchdown and an interception, but he also had 89 rushing yards and a touchdown on 16 carries.

The defense couldn’t stop the running game from Wisconsin but also had some troubles with their quarterback Jack Coan, who went 13/21 for 162 yards and a touchdown. Nebraska takes on Maryland this week as they try and keep their bowl hopes alive.

11. MICHIGAN STATE 4-6 (2-5)

Michigan State falls down a spot after getting embarrassed by the Wolverines, losing 44-10. Quarterback Brian Lewerke had a better game than last season, but he still struggled as he went 17/30 for 166 yards with a touchdown and two interceptions.

While the MSU defense was getting torched by Patterson, they held Michigan’s ground game in check, holding them to 83 yards and a touchdown on 34 carries. MSU takes on Rutgers this week as they look to try and keep their sights on a bowl game after this season.

12. MARYLAND 3-7 (1-6)

Maryland had a bye week last week. This week they take on Nebraska as they try and ruin the Cornhusker’s bowl chances as Maryland is already eliminated from bowl play.

13. NORTHWESTERN 2-8 (0-7)

Northwestern moves up after getting their second win of the season as they beat UMASS 45-6. Northwestern won this game on the ground as nine different people ran the ball for a combined 52 carries for 334 yards and a touchdown. Quarterback Aidan Smith only went 7/13 for 76 yards and threw two interceptions.

The defense did well in holding UMASS to 83 yards on 31 carries on the ground. They had issues in the passing defense, allowing both UMASS quarterbacks to combine for 227 yards on 25 passes, but they did force an interception. Northwestern takes on Minnesota this week as they could try and ruin their underdog season.

14. RUTGERS 2-8 (0-7)

Rutgers falls into the last slot of the rankings after they lost 56-21 to Ohio State. The offense put up a good fight as quarterback Johnny Langan went 12/26 for 121 yards with a touchdown and two interceptions. The ground game scored twice with 110 yards on 40 carries.

The defense struggled to restrict the passing attack from Ohio State, but they did better than expected in holding the ground game to 217 yards and two touchdowns on 44 carries. Rutgers plays Michigan State this week as they try and knock MSU out of bowl eligibility.

Michigan State Football stuck at no. 9 in latest Big Ten Power Rankings after loss to U of M

Michigan State is ranked all the way down at number 9 in the Detroit Free Press’ latest Big Ten Power Rankings after their big loss to Michigan.

[jwplayer XS9Z4UFR]

I could take the Wisconsin loss. I dealt with the Ohio State loss. The Penn State loss? Still coping but I was getting through it. Losing to Michigan? Nope. Cannot handle it. Absolute despair is being inflicted on my fandom. Michigan State’s loss to in-state rival U of M not only crushed the fanbase, it will also cement MSU as one of the teams at the bottom of the Big Ten Power Rankings from the Detroit Free Press, where they are currently stuck at number 9.

Here is what the Free Press said about the Spartans:

“There was a time this season when Michigan State was ranked. Hard to believe, right? Spartans haven’t won since late September, and in many of their recent games they haven’t been competitive. Take for instance Michigan State’s 44-10 loss to Michigan last Saturday. That one turned ugly – much like the mess Mark Dantonio’s program has become.”

Yikes.

Big Ten football power rankings after week 12: Movement at the top?

We’ve got the latest Big Ten football power rankings. Is there some movement at the top with Minnesota’s loss? What about Ohio State?

The season is now hitting the home stretch in the Big Ten and in college football in general. We’re now eleven weeks into the college football season, and we have a fairly good feel about who’s in this thing, and who’s not. Michigan continues to be a bit resurgent, Ohio State has clearly separated  itself, and everyone else is looking to position themselves for the postseason.

We’re here to make sense of it all, and teams like Penn State and Wisconsin are still right there for a trip to Indy.

As we do each week, here’s your Big Ten football power rankings after the latest round of games. As always, give me a break on these, after being in vacation in Mexico, I had to catch up on This is Us, A Million Little Things, and The Purge. The struggle is real.

14. Rutgers – (Last week 14)

Things aren’t good when a 35-point loss is a moral victory, but that’s what we had when the Scarlet Knights were able to put up 21 points against the Ohio State defense Saturday.

13. Maryland – (Last week 13)

Nothing to see here really. The Terps were on a bye week and it’s still the same Maryland team that’s quite on the season.

12. Northwestern – (Last week 12)

The Wildcats stepped out of conference and finally got another win. It’s still an awful season for Pat Fitzerald and crew.

11. Nebraska – (Last week 11)

Another week, another loss for everybody’s preseason dark horse in the West Division. The ‘Huskers now have to win their last two games just to get to a bowl. That’s sounds like a proverbial corn maze with a gain against Iowa to end things. It’s doable, but you have to make all the right turns.

Week 12 Big Ten power rankings, Michigan falls during bye week

Michigan Football moves down on their bye week, how far do the Wolverines fall after the dust settles in my latest Big Ten power rankings?

[jwplayer QTTbY4Ik-XNcErKyb]

The bye week was a good week overall for the Wolverines. Penn State, a team ahead of them in the Big Ten championship race fell, and Michigan State blew a 28-3 lead against Illinois. Even with those moves, Michigan falls back in my Big Ten power rankings. There were some huge Big Ten games last week, so expect some big changes in the rankings. You can check them out below.

1. OHIO STATE 9-0 (6-0)

Ohio State came off their bye with a suspension from their star defensive end Chase Young. No length has been determined for his suspension, but he didn’t play against Maryland last week and most likely won’t play Rutgers this week.

Moving to the action last week against Maryland, the offense never put their foot off the gas in the 73-14 beatdown. Ohio State put up 705 yards of offense, 322 came from the four different quarterbacks that played and combined for four touchdowns. The other 383 yards came on the ground as eight different people ran the football for those yards and six touchdowns.

The defense played hard, holding Maryland to 139 yards of offense. They had Maryland try out both quarterbacks Josh Jackson and Tyrrell Pigrome, holding them to 77 passing yards with a touchdown and an interception. The Buckeyes take on Rutgers this week in what could be a repeat of this game.

2. MINNESOTA 9-0 (6-0)

Minnesota was able to pull off the upset last week, beating Penn State 31-26. Quarterback Tanner Morgan played lights out, going 18/20 for 339 yards and three touchdowns.

The defense was able to create some big turnovers, forcing Penn State to throw three interceptions and make it a struggle to pass the ball on them. The win moves Minnesota to the second spot as they look to keep their Big Ten championship hopes alive as they are in the driver seat. They play Iowa this week as a win would officially eliminate the Hawkeyes and make it come down to their game next week to clinch their spot in Indianapolis.

3. PENN STATE 8-1 (5-1)

Penn State possibly just knocked themselves out of the playoff picture and the Big Ten title picture with their 31-26 loss to Minnesota. Quarterback Sean Clifford struggled, going 23/43 for 340 yards with only one touchdown and three interceptions. The running game had some better production, as the leading running back Journey Brown had 14 carries for 124 yards and two touchdowns.

The defense couldn’t stop the Minnesota passing game and only forced one fumble all day long. They did hold the Golden Gophers to 121 rushing yards and a touchdown on 40 carries, so they were forced to pass and it was still working. Penn State will look to rebound this week against Indiana as they try and keep their playoff and Big Ten championship hopes alive.

4. WISCONSIN 7-2 (4-2)

Wisconsin moves up with their 24-22 win over Iowa as they take over the second-place spot in the Big Ten West, with hopes that Minnesota slips up just once before they take them on in the season finale. Running the football with Jonathan Taylor was the main focal point of the offense, as Taylor had a whopping 31 carries for 250 yards, but he never found the endzone.

The defense made it a mission to shut down the Hawkeyes ground game and they did just that, holding the Hawkeyes to 87 yards on 23 carries. Wisconsin looks to keep their Big Ten title hopes alive as they take on Nebraska this week.

5. MICHIGAN 7-2 (4-2)

Michigan was on a bye week this week as they fall a spot with Wisconsin winning over Iowa. They take on Michigan State this week as they try and keep the Paul Bunyan trophy in Ann Arbor for at least another year.

6. INDIANA 7-2 (4-2)

Indiana moves up with the Iowa loss as they were on a bye week as well. The Hoosiers have a chance to ruin Penn State’s season this week and what better way to do that than in front of their own fans.

7. IOWA 6-3 (3-3)

Iowa falls a spot after their 24-22 loss to Wisconsin as they need a miracle to reach the Big Ten championship game now. Quarterback Nate Stanley went 17/28 for 208 yards with two touchdowns and a fumble. The running game struggled to get into the end zone, getting held to just 87 yards.

The defense was able to hold quarterback Jack Coan in place, having him go 16/25 for 173 yards with two touchdowns, an interception, and a fumble, but stopping Taylor wasn’t possible unless it was out of the endzone as he ran for 250 on them. Iowa takes on Minnesota this week as they look to try and ruin their perfect season and keep their Big Ten title hopes alive.

8. ILLINOIS 6-4 (4-3)

Illinois got a huge win last week as they came back down 28-3 and beat Michigan State 37-34. Quarterback Brandon Peters played very well, going 22/42 for 369 yards with three touchdowns and an interception. Wide receiver Josh Imatorbhebhe had a great game too, with four catches for 178 yards and two touchdowns.

The defense, while allowing over 500 yards of offense, held MSU quarterback Brian Lewerke in check by forcing him to go 19/36 for 251 yards with a touchdown and three interceptions. Illinois gets a week off this week but takes on Iowa next week.

9. PURDUE 4-6 (3-4)

Purdue jumps after their own comeback as they came back down 14-0 to win 24-22 over Northwestern. It was behind their quarterback Aidan O’Connell who went 34/50 for 271 yards with two touchdowns and two interceptions.

The defense did their best in stopping Northwestern’s passing game and it did as well as it could, holding them to 184 yards with two touchdowns and an interception. Purdue gets a week of rest as they take on Wisconsin as they try and keep their bowl hopes alive.

10. MICHIGAN STATE 4-5 (2-4)

Michigan State falls two spots after blowing a 25 point lead to Illinois at home. While Lewerke struggled, the running game had some better success, getting 275 yards and two touchdowns on the ground as the team was able to average 5.4 yards per carry.

The defense is where things fell apart as they let Illinois get back into the game with a 25 point lead. While they couldn’t stop Peters that much, they did well in stopping the Illinois rushing attack, holding them to 36 yards and a touchdown on 27 carries. They take on Michigan this week as they try and upset the Wolverines in Ann Arbor.

11. NEBRASKA 4-5 (2-4)

Nebraska sits still after their bye week. This week they take on Wisconsin as they try and eliminate the Badgers from the Big Ten title picture. Nebraska is looking to make a bowl game as well as they need to win two of their final three games.

12. MARYLAND 3-7 (1-6)

Maryland is officially out of the bowl game picture after its 73-14 loss to Ohio State. Maryland couldn’t do much on offense, and it showed as they were only able to muster up 139 total yards on offense as the running game had 62 yards and a touchdown on just 32 carries.

The defense couldn’t do anything to stop Ohio State, allowing 705 total yards and 10 touchdowns. Six came on the ground, and four in the air. Maryland has a bye week this week, but they take on Nebraska next week.

13. RUTGERS 2-7 (0-6)

Rutgers had a bye week last week and this week they look to have a huge upset as they try and take down Ohio State.

14. NORTHWESTERN 1-8 (0-7)

Northwestern blew a 14 point lead and lost to Purdue 24-22 as they couldn’t keep their offense moving constantly. The running game was the bread and butter for the team, getting 251 yards and a touchdown on 45 carries.

The defense had troubles in stopping the passing game, but when it came to stopping the run they had more success, holding Purdue to 74 yards and a touchdown on 21 carries. Northwestern takes on UMASS this week in a late non-conference game.
