Michigan at a standstill in Big Ten Week 5 power rankings

Where did Michigan football fare in the latest Big Ten power rankings after losing to Wisconsin?

[jwplayer sQ93pYVw-XNcErKyb]

Another week gone by for the Big Ten, and the week was particularly action-packed with multiple storylines unfolding. There was the first non-Wisconsin COVID-19 game cancellation, two undefeated teams battling in the Big Ten West, two winless teams fighting for a taste of victory and even more.

Michigan football was on the losing end of its game once again this week, losing 49-11 to No. 10 Wisconsin. The Wolverines looked lost, falling to 1-3 on the season. Wisconsin came back from its two-week bye after it dealt with a COVID-19 outbreak and showcased why it’s still a contender in a messy Big Ten Conference that has turned upside down this season.

Despite the loss, Michigan wasn’t able to budge either way in the latest Big Ten power rankings. There was minimal movement due to the results of the action from last week, but this week, we’re seeing the top two Big Ten East and Big Ten West teams battle to take control of their respective divisions and not let go with five games left.

What were the minimal changes in the conference power rankings? Check them out below.

Big Ten football power rankings after week three of conference play

It’s time for another look at where each Big Ten team stacks up against the rest in our weekly power rankings.

Big Ten football is back, and we’ve now seen three weeks of action (well, for most). What we thought we knew going into the very delayed season thanks to the coronavirus pandemic has changed substantially from the start of the 2020 conference campaign.

The third week of play continued to give us surprises with Maryland making it look like Penn State forgot what American football was, Indiana remaining undefeated, and Wisconsin still sitting on the sidelines with COVID-19 protocols.

It’s all been a crazy year and a zany football season. It makes you wonder what next week will hold.

Regardless, it’s not holding us back here at Buckeyes Wire. Each week we take a look at the pecking order in the conference, and here’s how we see it after another week. It’s our week three Big Ten football Power Rankings.

Big Ten football power rankings after week two of conference play

After two weeks of Big Ten football, things are starting to sort themselves out with where teams stand in our weekly power rankings.

Big Ten football is back, and we’ve seen two weeks of action already (okay, scratch the term already). What we thought we knew going into the very delayed season thanks to the coronavirus pandemic has changed substantially from to start off the season.

Then, it changed again when week two rolled around and some of what we thought we knew from where we originally ranked teams after week one came crashing down in Ann Arbor (sorry, I had to).

It makes you wonder what next week will hold.

Regardless, we are soldiering on here at Buckeyes Wire and continuing to do our best to make sense of it all with our weekly power rankings of how the Big Ten conference looks.

Here we go after week two …

14. Illinois (0-2) – last week (13)

We sure thought the Fighting Illini were on an upward trajectory coming into 2020, but two-losses to start the season and we are reminded that you cannot let those in Champaign keep an eye on nice things. They will break them.

13. Minnesota (0-2) – last week (9)

It felt like P.J. Fleck had a culture and program changing season last year, but so far this year, the wholesale changes on defense have been hard to replace.

12. Nebraska (0-1) – last week (10)

Nebraska put up a fight against Ohio State in the first half of week one, but had no fight to bring because of the canceled game against Wisconsin. We’ll reserve judgment for now.

11. Iowa (0-2) – last week (8)

This Iowa program is about as inconsistent as the weather in the Midwest this time of year. It’s looking like one of those unexpected years in Iowa City, and not in a pleasant-surprise-Kirk-Ferentz-contract-extension kind of way.

Michigan State Basketball ranked No. 4 in Jon Rothstein’s Preseason Big Ten Power Rankings

Michigan State came in at No. 4 in Jon Rothstein’s preseason Big Ten power rankings.

[jwplayer wLZ8OZt0]

Michigan State Men’s Basketball really thrived during the Cassius Winston and Xavier Tillman era. The Spartans won three straight regular-season Big Ten Championships from 2018-2020 in what was a memorable stretch in MSU basketball history.

However, the winds of change are blowing through East Lansing. Cassius Winston and Xavier Tillman are gone, and with them went a lot of the respect that would normally be given to a team that has won three straight conference championships.

With a much different looking roster in 2020, the Spartans are being ranked much lower than they normally would in preseason previews. Over the weekend, NCAA Insider Jon Rothstein put out his Big Ten Preseason Power Rankings, and MSU was ranked down at No. 4, behind Iowa, Wisconsin, and Illinois.

You can see the full rankings on the next page.

MSU Basketball ranks no. 1 in final Detroit News Big Ten Ranking

Michigan State Basketball ranks at number one in the final Detroit News Big Ten Power Ranking. Here is some information on this ranking.

Michigan State basketball ranks at the top of the very last Detroit News Big Ten Power Ranking. What an emotional year for this team. There were a number of ups and downs for the team and for individual players like Cassius Winston.

Here is what Matt Charboneau had to say about this ranking:

“The Spartans closed the regular season winning five straight, including four in a row over ranked opponents, to capture a share of their third straight Big Ten championship. Xavier Tillman has been outstanding all year, but Cassius Winston has been rolling as well, while Rocket Watts and Aaron Henry (11) have come alive as MSU heads into March will plenty of momentum.”

You can check out the entire Detroit News Big Ten Power Ranking here. Charboneau ranks Wisconsin at no. two and Maryland at number three. Interstate rival Michigan ranks down at number seven.

Big Ten football power rankings very early look ahead for 2020

The Big Ten football season is over, but we’re looking ahead to the what the pecking order might be in 2020.

All the Big Ten football teams have now completed their bowl seasons and headed on into off-season mode. This last year was one to remember with plenty of surprises, storylines and moments to remember.

But just because the season has ended doesn’t mean we’re done with football — especially on a site dedicated to Ohio State, where football is king. The Buckeyes have a slew of talent coming back for 2020, but what does the rest of the league look like?

Will the usual suspects be there? Who surprises, and what programs take that next step. Most importantly, can anyone knock off three-time defending champion OSU?

Here’s a very, very early look at what next year might look like.

14. Rutgers

I mean, is there really another answer at this point? It’s going to take recycled head coach Greg Schiano a bit to get this program up and going again.

13. Maryland

We need to see more before anyone can believe that the Terps jump up next season. It’s still a team not built for the Big Ten and the culture has to change.

12. Purdue

The Boilermakers were far too consistent last season and a quarterback will need to emerge for Purdue to be a force next season.

11. Illinois

The Illini might have caught lightning in a bottle this past season, but it limped a bit to the finish line and we still need to see proof the momentum can continue.

In final regular season Big Ten Power Rankings, Michigan falls after loss to Ohio State

Michigan football lost to Ohio State 56-27, how does that affect the final Big Ten Power Rankings before post-season play.

[jwplayer MfLEtgwV-XNcErKyb]

Michigan finishes their regular season 9-3 after losing to Ohio State once again, 56-27 as their playoff chances are officially gone along with a New Year’s Six Bowl.

The rankings got a shake-up after some games in the conference this week as Wisconsin upset Minnesota to get a rematch with Ohio State in the Big Ten Championship game. Check out the final rankings of the regular season.

1. OHIO STATE 12-0 (9-0)

Ohio State finished their regular season undefeated after beating Michigan 56-27 in Ann Arbor. Running back J.K. Dobbins had his way with the Wolverines, rushing for 211 yards and four touchdowns on 31 carries.

The defense was questionable in the first half as they struggled to stop the passing game, but they held Michigan to just 91 rushing yards and two touchdowns on 26 carries. Ohio State plays Wisconsin for the Big Ten Championship this week as they try and keep their undefeated season alive.

2. WISCONSIN 10-2 (7-2)

Wisconsin jumps up to number two after upsetting the Golden Gophers 38-17 and clinching their ticket to Indianapolis to try and take down the mighty Buckeyes. Quarterback Jack Coan was the main source of offense, going 15/22 for 280 yards and two touchdowns.

The defense shut down Minnesota’s rushing attack, holding them to 76 yards on 30 carries. Wisconsin will try and get its revenge with the Buckeyes on Saturday and shake up the College Football Playoff talk.

3. PENN STATE 10-2 (7-2)

Penn State doesn’t change after beating Rutgers 27-6. Backup quarterback Will Levis started as starting quarterback Sean Clifford missed the game due to the injury he suffered against Ohio State last week. Levis finished the game with just 81 yards, a touchdown, and an interception after going 8/14, but had 108 yards on the ground with 17 carries.

The defense kept Rutgers at bay as they held them to just two field goals, despite allowing 383 yards, 199 in the air and 184 on the ground. Penn State will be in contention for a New Year’s Six Bowl as well, but their destination is unknown as well.

4. MINNESOTA 10-2 (7-2)

Minnesota falls to fourth after losing their Big Ten West title hopes after losing 38-17 to Wisconsin. Quarterback Tanner Morgan did everything he could, going 20/37 for 296 yards with two touchdowns and an interception.

The defense kept Wisconsin running back Jonathan Taylor in check as they held him to just 76 yards on 18 carries, but he scored twice. Minnesota might play in a New Year’s Six Bowl, but either way had a fantastic regular season and are awaiting their postseason game information.

5. MICHIGAN 9-3 (6-3)

Michigan falls back to fifth after getting demolished at home 56-27. Quarterback Shea Patterson did everything he could as well, going 18/43 for 305 yards with a touchdown and an interception.

The defense just didn’t know what to do as they let quarterback Justin Fields go 14/25 for 302 yards and four touchdowns. It was an embarrassing loss once again to the Buckeyes as the Wolverines now wait to see what bowl game they are playing in.

6. IOWA 9-3 (6-3)

Iowa held onto the win this week against Nebraska, winning 27-24. Iowa could pound the rock down Nebraska’s throats, finishing with 225 yards and two touchdowns on 31 carries.

The Hawkeye defense shut down the Cornhuskers passing attack, holding them to a combined 12/23 for 100 yards, with one touchdown and one interception. Iowa will be awaiting their bowl game announcement on Sunday as well.

7. INDIANA 8-4 (5-4)

Indiana held onto the lead as they beat Purdue in double overtime 44-41. Quarterback Peyton Ramsey went 23/39 for 337 yards and three touchdowns, along with 19 carries for 42 yards and two touchdowns.

Indiana had some struggles with stopping the run though as they let Purdue run for 181 yards and two touchdowns on 33 carries. Indiana will be looking for their ninth win of the season in their bowl game this month.

8. ILLINOIS 6-6 (4-5)

Illinois got pushed aside by Northwestern 27-10 as Illinois struggled to score. The passing attack was without starting quarterback Brandon Peters, as backup Matt Robinson got the start again and finished going 8/17 for 108 yards.

Illinois did well in stopping the passing game of Northwestern, holding them to 55 yards, a touchdown, and an interception as their quarterback Andrew Marty went 6/10. Illinois will be waiting to see which bowl game they are going to this year.

9. MICHIGAN STATE 6-6 (4-5)

Michigan State clinched their bowl game after beating Maryland 19-16. Quarterback Brian Lewerke had some troubles but finished the game by going 30/41 for 342 yards with two interceptions, along with eight carries for 26 yards and a touchdown.

Their defense was tested by Maryland’s rushing attack, allowing 164 yards and a touchdown on 29 carries. Michigan State will await their bowl game announcement as they look to end the season with a winning record.

10. NEBRASKA 5-7 (3-6)

Nebraska was close to becoming a bowl team before losing to Iowa 27-24. The run game was the best part of the offense, as the team had 184 yards and a touchdown on 56 carries.

The defense did well in stopping Iowa quarterback Nate Stanley, holding him to just 99 yards and an interception after having him go 11/24. Nebraska will be looking to make a bowl game next year in year three under head coach Scott Frost.

11. PURDUE 4-8 (3-6)

Purdue came close to playing spoiler against Indiana, losing 44-41 in double overtime. Quarterback Aidan O’Connell did well, going 28/49 for 408 yards, three touchdowns, and an interception.

The defense did it’s best to stop Indiana, but in the end, they just couldn’t. Indiana was able to run the ball well against Purdue, with 50 carries for 185 yards and three touchdowns. Purdue will look at 2020 as a rebound year after multiple injuries shook the team this season.

12. NORTHWESTERN 3-9 (1-8)

Northwestern moves up a spot after beating Illinois 29-10. Northwestern ran the ball a lot against Illinois as they finished with 65 total carries for 378 yards and three touchdowns.

The defense completely shut down Illinois rushing attack, holding them to just 14 yards, and a touchdown on 26 carries. 2020 will be looked at as a rebound year for the Wildcats and head coach Pat Fitzgerald.

13. MARYLAND 3-9 (1-8)

Maryland falls after losing to Michigan State 19-16 as the offense just couldn’t get it done. Quarterback Josh Jackson went 11/27 for 141 yards with a touchdown and an interception. The defense held MSU’s rushing attack in check, holding them to 88 yards and a touchdown on 37 carries.

14. RUTGERS 2-10 (0-9)

Rutgers fought hard against Penn State but lost 27-6. Quarterback Johnny Langan went 12/24 for 164 yards as he was able to move against the nifty Penn State defense.

Rutgers defense though had issues with stopping the running game, as Penn State ran for 252 yards and three touchdowns on 46 carries. Rutgers will be looking to be relevant again next year under their new (and old) head coach Greg Schiano

Big Ten football power rankings after week 14: The writing is on the wall

The regular season is over and most teams are locked into the Big Ten football power rankings for 2019. There’s a change near the top.

All the regular season games are now complete in the Big Ten, and only two teams have a conference game left. That would be the Big Ten Championship game of course, and there are two familiar combatants.

Ohio State and Wisconsin are the two teams that have reached Indy the most, so off we go again. It’s a little zany because the Buckeyes blew the doors off the Badgers earlier this year, so there’s that. Make of it what you will. Either way, it’s a chance to get some more hardware so both teams will put the pads and helmets on and perform feats of athletic endeavors in Lucas Oil Stadium.

Meanwhile, the rest of the conference is done aside from those nine teams that are going bowling. But that won’t likely change the destiny of what’s been written in stone almost for this 2019 season.

Here’s the final power rankings for the regular season.

14. Rutgers – (Last week 14)

The season is mercifully over, and now the Scarlet Knights can begin the Greg Schiano era — again. There’s a ton of wood to chop folks.

13. Maryland – (Last week 13)

The season is mercifully over, and now the Mike Locksley era can continue. They’re all out of wood folks.

12. Northwestern – (Last week 12)

Yup. The season is mercifully over and now Pat Fitzgerald can quite being so salty towards the media. Where the heck did this pile of turds season come from anyway?

11. Nebraska – (Last week 11)

You guessed it. The season is mercifully over and now Scott Frost and company can start the promotional train on being the darkhorse to win the Big Ten West again. Boy was everyone wrong on that one.

Week 14 Big Ten power rankings, Michigan moves up before Ohio State matchup

Michigan football beat Indiana last week 39-14, how does that win affect their conference standing before taking on Ohio State?

[jwplayer u3unzbYK-XNcErKyb]

Michigan improved to 9-2 on the season with a 39-14 win over Indiana last week as it was the first time under head coach Jim Harbaugh that the Wolverines didn’t need overtime in Indiana to defeat the Hoosiers. That wasn’t the biggest game last week, as Ohio State defeated Penn State and showed signs of weakness at points in the game.

There were some wins that change up the entire rankings list ahead of the final week of regular-season play approaches as the Big Ten Championship game is next week. Check out my latest rankings.

1. OHIO STATE 11-0 (8-0)

Ohio State stays on top after they defeated Penn State 28-17 and keep their undefeated season alive. While quarterback Justin Fields had his worst performance this season by fumbling the football three times, running back J.K. Dobbins had a solid performance despite fumbling once. Dobbins finished with 157 yards and two touchdowns on 36 carries.

The defense did a solid job in making sure passing the ball would be tough for the Nittany Lions as they held both Penn State quarterbacks to just 128 yards combined and an interception. Ohio State takes on Michigan this week in the biggest game of the season for them as they try and keep their undefeated and playoff hopes alive.

2. MINNESOTA 10-1 (7-1)

Minnesota was able to shake off the Northwestern Wildcats, winning 38-22 as quarterback Tanner Morgan had another impressive performance, going 15/23 for 211 yards with four touchdowns and an interception. Minnesota also was able to rush for 212 yards and a touchdown on 39 carries.

The defense made Northwestern struggle in the passing game once again, having both quarterbacks combine by going 8/12 for 95 yards and a touchdown. Minnesota takes on Wisconsin this week as the winner takes on Ohio State next week in the Big Ten title game.

3. MICHIGAN 9-2 (6-2)

Michigan jumps over Penn State and Wisconsin despite having their losses being to them. The reason being, Michigan is playing better now than they were against the Badgers, and if they played like they did in the second half for all four quarters against Penn State, they would’ve won.

Last week they handled Indiana with ease for the first time in a while, winning 39-14. Quarterback Shea Patterson tried one-upping his performance against Michigan State by throwing for 366 yards with five touchdowns and an interception.

The defense had some struggles at first, but would later calm down and shut down the Hoosiers offense, holding the Hoosiers to 97 rushing yards on 37 carries, allowing the only two touchdowns of the game. Michigan takes on Ohio State this week as they try and play spoiler against the Buckeyes perfect season, and put a damper on their playoff hopes.

4. PENN STATE 9-2 (6-2)

Penn State falls only one spot after losing to Ohio State last week. They put up a good fight on offense, but with quarterback Sean Clifford getting injured, backup Will Levis had to step in and change up the offense. Penn State was able to get some action on the ground against Ohio State, finishing with 99 yards and two touchdowns on 36 carries.

The defense did all they could for the offense as they forced four fumbles and recovered three of them, which helped keep the game close. Fields hasn’t had any issues with turnovers this season, but this was his worst game when it came to that. Penn State takes on Rutgers this week as they look to get their 10th win of the season.

5. WISCONSIN 9-2 (6-2)

Wisconsin falls a spot as they had some troubles with Purdue before pulling away, winning 45-24. Running back Jonathan Taylor had another impressive performance with 222 yards and a touchdown on 28 carries, but the fumbling issues returned as he coughed it up twice.

The defense helped out greatly with the Badgers offense turning the football over four times. They forced Purdue to air it out as the Boilermakers could only muster up 50 yards on 20 carries. Wisconsin will try and upset the Golden Gophers next week and punch their ticket to a rematch against Ohio State in Indianapolis.

6. IOWA 8-3 (5-3)

Iowa was given a tough fight from Illinois, but pulled it out in the end, winning 19-10. Iowa had to move the ball through the air as quarterback Nate Stanley went 18/35 for 308 yards and an interception.

The defense helped the Hawkeyes lock up the victory as they forced Illinois quarterback Brandon Peters to go 16/31 for 125 yards with a touchdown, two interceptions, and a fumble. Iowa takes on Nebraska this week as they look to ruin the Cornhusker’s bowl eligibility.

7. INDIANA 7-4 (4-4)

Indiana put up a good fight against Michigan, but the injuries were too much on offense to put up any more points. Indiana was without their top wide receiver, Whop Philyor and wide receiver Ty Fryfogle would miss most of the game as well. Quarterback Peyton Ramsey went 17/29 for 217 yards with an interception and a fumble as the passing game was able to push the Wolverines back.

While the defense didn’t have an answer for Patterson, they did hold the Michigan running game in check, holding them to just 87 yards on 29 carries. Indiana takes on Purdue this week as they just are looking to improve their record for a better bowl game.

8. ILLINOIS 6-5 (4-4)

Illinois sits still after their tough fight against Iowa. While Peters struggled, the running game was able to help the offense despite never finding the endzone. They finished with 192 yards on 39 carries as they were the best thing the offense had going.

The defense couldn’t have much of an answer for Stanley, but when it came to stopping the Iowa rushing attack Illinois did just that. They held the Hawkeyes to 79 yards and a touchdown on 32 carries. Illinois takes on Northwestern this week as they look to improve their bowl game bid.

9. NEBRASKA 5-6 (3-5)

Nebraska jumps up two spots after having their way with Maryland, winning 54-7. Nebraska was able to just run the ball right through the Terrapins, getting 305 yards and four touchdowns on 57 carries.

Nebraska’s defense made Maryland regret trying to pass the football on them. Four different quarterbacks tried to attack the Cornhuskers secondary and none of them were able to do it. All four quarterbacks combined by going 7/21 for 57 yards. Nebraska will look to get into a bowl game as they try and upset Iowa in the season finale.

10. MICHIGAN STATE 5-6 (3-5)

Michigan State moves up after getting a shutout against Rutgers 27-0. Quarterback Brian Lewerke rebounded after the poor performance against Michigan, going 21/30 for 239 yards with three touchdowns and an interception.

The defense also rebounded by not allowing Rutgers to score or get over 150 total offensive yards. They held Rutgers to just 140 yards and when it came to the pass defense, Michigan State did a good job at shutting that down. They held Rutgers quarterback Johnny Langan to 57 yards and an interception as he went 8/20. Michigan State takes on Maryland this week as they look to clinch a bowl game with a victory.

11. PURDUE 4-7 (3-5)

Purdue put up a good fight against Wisconsin, but it wasn’t enough in the end for them. Quarterback Aidan O’Connell did all he could by going 26/43 for 289 yards with two touchdowns and an interception.

The defense did great at forcing turnovers on the Badgers, but they couldn’t have an answer for quarterback Jack Coan who went 15/19 for 203 yards with two touchdowns and an interception. Purdue takes on Indiana this week as they try and come up a hair short to a bowl game.

12. MARYLAND 3-8 (1-7)

Maryland had a horrible performance last week, and while the passing game couldn’t do much, the running game could at least move the ball down the field. Running back Javon Leake had eight carries for 80 yards and a touchdown as he was the only player on the team to score.

The defense struggled to stop everything Nebraska had. When it came to the passing game, Nebraska quarterback played well, going 16/25 for 194 yards with two touchdowns and an interception, even getting 94 yards and a touchdown on the ground in his 10 carries. Maryland takes on Michigan State this week as they try and ruin the Spartans postseason possibilities.

13. NORTHWESTERN 2-9 (0-8)

Northwestern put up somewhat of a fight against Minnesota but ultimately failed. The ground game was able to find the end zone more than the passing game, as quarterback Andrew Marty finished with two rushing touchdowns and 52 yards on 16 of his carries as he didn’t do poorly in the passing game by going 8/10 for 95 yards and a touchdown.

The defense couldn’t stop either the run or the pass by the Golden Gophers, allowing 423 yards as both were almost equal in the damage done to the Wildcats defense. Northwestern takes on Illinois this week as they look to get their first Big Ten conference win of the season.

14. RUTGERS 2-9 (0-8)

Rutgers got shutout this week after dropping 21 on Ohio State the week before. The ground game was the only thing that could somewhat work for them as they had 83 yards on 27 carries against a tough Michigan State defense.

Rutgers defense couldn’t defend the pass but did better in stopping the rushing game by Michigan State. Running back Elijah Collins had 31 carries for 109 yards as he was the main back for the Spartans. Rutgers takes on Penn State as they try and upset the Nittany Lions and get their first Big Ten conference win of the season.

Big Ten football power rankings after week 13: Solidifying spots

There’s just one more game left in the regular season and after an interesting Saturday, we’ve got the latest in our Big Ten Power Rankings.

There’s now just one week of football to go in the Big Ten, and we are as close to ever at knowing which teams are going to Indy, which are positioning themselves for bowl games, and which one’s are still alive for some pretty big things.

Ohio State clinched its spot in the Big Ten Championship Game after a hard fought win over a top ten Penn State, Michigan keeps winning, and the West now comes down to Wisconsin and Minnesota.

As we do each week, here’s your Big Ten football power rankings after the latest round of games. As always, give me a break on these, I ran across the Donald Trump impeachment hearings and couldn’t turn it off. Shame on me.

14. Rutgers – (Last week 14)

Rutgers has one more shot to get a Big Ten win. It’s against Penn State next week. The Scarlet Knights will finish winless in the conference.

13. Maryland – (Last week 13)

Boy has this team quit on the season. It got blitzed by Nebraska. Literally nobody has gotten blitzed by Nebraska up until now.

12. Northwestern – (Last week 12)

Pat Fitzgerald is going to blow a gasket in one of these press conferences coming up. He’s about had it with this team and you can bet he’s ready to turn the page after yet another loss, this time to Minnesota. In hindsight, it might not be a good idea to play a team that likes to row boats on the shores of Lake Michigan.

11. Nebraska – (Last week 11)

The Cornhuskers looked like the darkhorse we thought in the West Division against Maryland. But, since the Terps aren’t good at the American version of the sport this year, we’ll pause on that. One more win and Scott Frost can take his team to the postseason.
