Twitter Reacts: Penn State’s upset against Northwestern in Big Ten Tournament

How Twitter reacted to Penn State’s big win over Northwestern.

The clock still has not struck midnight on the Penn State Nittany Lions as they continue to fight through the Big Ten tournament.

It took a total team effort from the male Nittany Lions but they were able to upset Northwestern in their home state for the second time this year. This win all but guarantees an NCAA tournament berth for the team and now their gritty work ethic will get to be on the big stage.

Between the big win and a questionable call at the end of the game, Twitter was buzzing throughout the game.

If a win over Illinois didn’t clinch Penn State’s at-large berth in the NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament, then a win over Northwestern on Friday night in Chicago may have been more than enough to push the Nittany Lions into the big dance. Penn State’s overtime 67-65 victory over the Wildcats, its second overtime win over Northwestern in as many weeks, forced the team to dig deep and make some big shots in a game that was anything but pretty.

[autotag]Seth Lundy[/autotag] hit some big three-point shots toward the end of the game to help give Penn State the win, and [autotag]Jalen Pickett[/autotag] shrugged off a tough night to come up with some big moments of his own in the final stretch.

How to watch Penn State vs. Northwestern in the Big Ten men’s basketball tournament on Friday

After digging deep to score a big win in their Big Ten tournament opener, Penn State is quickly back in action on Friday to face the Northwestern Wildcats. Penn State advanced to the third Big Ten quarterfinals with a victory over Illinois on Thursday evening, overcoming a deficit in the second half to pull away with the win.

The win over Illinois is believed to be enough to get Penn State into the NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament for the first time since 2011, but a win over Northwestern would certainly help lock things up for the Nittany Lions.

Penn State won the only regular-season meeting with Northwestern with a wild 68-65 overtime victory in Evanston in the next-to-last game of the regular season. Can the Nittany Lions knock off the tournament-bound Wildcats one more time to advance to the Big Ten semifinals?

Here is how to catch all of the action as Penn State faces Illinois on Friday. The full Big Ten tournament schedule and updated tracker can be found here.

Penn State advances in Big Ten Tournament: Wins thriller against Illinois

Penn State advances and prepares for a matchup with Northwestern.

What a game!

In a tournament that had seen the lower-seeded teams win all four games prior to Penn State tipping off, that could have been looked at as either a good or bad omen.

The 10th-seeded Nittany Lions faced the seventh-seeded Illini, who they had beaten twice this season. Coming into the game, the old adage that it’s hard to beat a team three times was prevalent.

That was put to bed Thursday night with Penn State winning 79-76 to reach the quarterfinals of the tournament for the second straight season.

As expected in a trilogy, the game was tight to start. During the first ten minutes of the game, there were four lead changes and two ties. That would be a theme throughout the game.

However, the ten-minute mark was when Penn State started to separate in the first half.

After leading 17-14, they held Illinois to six points over the next six minutes. With five and a half minutes remaining in the first half, Penn State held a nine point lead.

Then, it was Illinois’ turn to make their run.

Penn State was held to two points for the remainder of the first half. The Illini cut the lead to 31-30 at halftime.

The second half had the makings of an all-time Big Ten Tournament game.

Two minutes in, it was tied 34-34 and it was game on from there. The second half saw 12 lead changes and four ties.

Penn State looked like they were in big trouble at times. Playing in front of a pro-Illinois crowd in Chicago, the stadium erupted when the Illini took a 40-46 lead at the 14:18 mark.

It was all grit from the Nittany Lions as they battled back. [autotag]Jalen Pickett[/autotag], who had a quiet scoring night, finished their 7-0 run to put Penn State back up 47-46.

From that point, it was a back and forth affair. Each team took the lead and then gave it up the next possession.

At the 6:30 mark, Pickett made a layup that put Penn State up for good. They never relinquished the lead for the rest of the game.

There was just enough separation that kept Illinois at arms length. This was punctuated by [autotag]Andrew Funk[/autotag]’s dagger three to put Penn State up eight with just under four minutes remaining.

Funk was sensational. He was the game’s leading scorer with 20 points, 18 of them coming from his six three-pointers.

In a night that Pickett was quiet scoring the ball, seniors [autotag]Camren Wynter[/autotag] and [autotag]Seth Lundy[/autotag] stepped up scoring 18 and 17 points respectively. Lundy finished with a double-double adding 10 rebounds.

Down the stretch, Penn State made things interesting when they couldn’t quite completely shut the door by missing multiple three throws.

But what’s a Penn State basketball game without some drama?

Illinois clawed their way back into the game, but their effort came up just short. Senior guard [autotag]Terrence Shannon Jr.[/autotag] was the Illini’s leading scorer with 19 points. Junior forward [autotag]Coleman Hawkins[/autotag] was a problem for Penn State all night and finished the game with 17 points.

This was a huge win for the Nittany Lions. It all but assures they’ve punched their ticket into the NCAA Tournament for the first time in 12 years.

But this team isn’t thinking about that right now.

They are still playing in the Big Ten Tournament and face a Northwestern team on Friday that they just beat.

That game is expected to tip off at 6:30 pm ET on Big Ten Network.

Whether or not it was enough to assure themselves of a spot in the NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament remains to be seen, but Penn State’s victory over Illinois was certainly worth remembering fondly. Jalen Pickett and the Nittany Lions battled Illinois in a back-and-forth second half before finding a run to put the Illini in the rearview mirror. The win moved Penn State onto the Big Ten quarterfinals and gave them one more good win to add to their tournament push with Selection Sunday looming.

Penn State will face Northwestern on Friday evening in the United Center in Chicago. For the second game in a row, the Nittany Lions will take on a team that is already tournament bound with a likely partisan crowd in its favor. Penn State will be in for another tough battle, as every game should be at this point in the season.

How to watch or stream Penn State vs. Illinois in the Big Ten Men’s Basketball Tournament on Thursday

Looking to make one final statement to secure an at-large bid in the NCAA Tournament, the Penn State Nittany Lions are set to begin what they hope will be a good run in the Big Ten men’s basketball tournament on Thursday. Penn State faces Illinois Thursday evening with hopes of moving on to a Friday matchup with Northwestern.

A few bracketology updates already have Penn State in the big dance, but Jalen Pickett and company know it would serve them well to not be one-and-done in Chicago at the Big Ten tournament. One win against Illinois could prove to be enough to keep the bubble intact, so Penn State will have to play a good clean game and take this tournament one game at a time.

Here is how to catch all of the action as Penn State faces Illinois on Thursday. The full Big Ten tournament schedule and updated tracker can be found here.

USA TODAY updates bracketology. Where Penn State sits before Big Ten tournament

USA TODAY Sports has updated its bracketology. Where Penn State sits before the Big Ten tournament.

Penn State could be sitting in a favorable position as far as its NCAA Tournament odds are concerned before playing in its first Big Ten tournament game on Thursday. After a strong finish to the regular season highlighted by back-to-back wins against Northwestern and Maryland, two teams essentially locked into a tournament bid at this point, the Nittany Lions may be able to get away with not even winning its Big Ten tournament opener against Illinois, although it would certainly be good to win the game just to be sure.

USA TODAY Sports’ updated bracketology published on Tuesday has Penn State getting into the tournament, although it would be as one of the participants in the opening round games as an 11-seed. According to the most recent update to the bracket forecast from USA TODAY, Penn State would be paired up with Mississippi State to give the Big Ten a total of 10 teams in the big dance. The other Big Ten teams include Purdue, Indiana, Northwestern, Iowa, Michigan State, Maryland, Illinois, Rutgers, and Wisconsin (who also would be in an opening round matchup).

A victory over Mississippi State in the opening round would send the Nittany Lions to the 11-seed in the West region, where future Big Ten member UCLA is the top seed. Penn State would take on six-seed Creighton out of the Big East in the first round, with a possible shot at 3-seed Kansas State in the second round on the line. The Big Ten’s regular-season champion, Purdue, is the second seed in the West and could be waiting for a Sweet 16 matchup if things were to go Penn State’s way. Purdue would have to get out of the first round that includes a first-round matchup with UNC Ashville and the winner of a Duke-MEmphis matchup in the first round.

Penn State is sitting in a slightly more comfortable spot in the updated bracket from Joe Lunardi of ESPN. Lunardi has Penn State in as one of the last four teams not having to play in the opening round games.

Either way, Penn State knows it still has some work to do to ensure they end their NCAA Tournament drought. A win against Illinois on Thursday, a team they have beaten twice already this regular season, would help in a big way, and a second win against Northwestern on Friday would likely be more than enough to wrap up a tournament invite.

But of course, four wins would ensure Penn State doesn’t have to worry about any at-large scenarios.

The Big Ten men’s basketball tournament gets underway on Wednesday with a pair of games. Penn State will face Illinois on Thursday evening. Here is the full Big Ten tournament schedule and updated tracker.

Joe Lunardi’s bracket for ESPN has been updated. Is Penn State in?

Joe Lunardi’s updated bracket for ESPN has been updated. Where Penn State stands leading into the Big Ten tournament.

Penn State reshaped its tournament profile in the final week of the regular season with momentum-shifting wins at Northwestern and at home against Maryland, but the Nittany Lions are still not quite a given to make the tournament NCAA tournament just yet. Penn State will head to the Big Ten tournament in Chicago knowing there is still some work to so to lock down an at-large bid in the tournament, but EPSN bracketologist Joe Lunardi feels the Nittany Lions have a slight margin for error.

Lunardi’s updated bracket for the 2023 NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament was updated Tuesday, and the Nittany Lions are one of his last four teams in not having to play in the opening round. But they are the last team to get in before being slotted into one of the tournament’s opening round games.

Penn State gets Lunardi’s 11-seed in the South region, which would deliver a first-round matchup with San Diego State, the six-seed and the champions of the Mountain West Conference getting an automatic qualifier. That would send Penn State to Denver for the first round. If Penn State was to pull the upset of the Aztecs, Penn State would face the winner of the Kansas State-UC Irvine matchup with a potential shot at Duke or Purdue coming after that in the Sweet 16.

The other three teams in Lunardi’s last four in without having to play an opening-round game include (in order) Boise State, NC State, and Pittsburgh. The last four teams in Lunardi’s bracket are Mississippi State, Utah State, Rutgers, and Nevada. Rutgers is interesting because the Scarlet Knights were 2-0 against Penn State and finished one game ahead of Penn State in the Big Ten standings. Rutgers will also play one of Lunardi’s teams sitting just outside the bracket, Michigan, in their first Big Ten tournament game. Michigan is among Lunardi’s next four teams out, while Wisconsin is one of his first four teams out. Wisconsin faces Ohio State in the first game of the Big Ten tournament on Wednesday. Penn State went 1-5 against Rutgers, Michigan, and Wisconsin during the regular season.

One win in the Big Ten tournament could potentially be enough to get Penn State into the NCAA Tournament. The Nittany Lions face Illinois on Thursday evening in their first game of the tournament. Penn State was 2-0 against Illinois during the regular season. A third win would send Penn State on to face Northwestern in the quarterfinals. Penn State won an overtime thriller in Evanston last week.

Of course, if Penn State were to just win four more games, it wouldn’t have to worry about any of the at-large conversations.

A deep run can be the difference between playing more postseason basketball and the season being over.

The Purdue Boilermakers won the regular season conference title after going 15-5. They’ll be the one seed for this tournament and one of the four teams who earned a double bye.

Here are the seeds and matchups for the Big Ten Tournament starting March 8th.

What the Big Ten basketball tournament matchups are right now
