The last time Penn State was the favorite, the Nittany Lions were blown away at home by Nebraska, a program that went on a perfectly-timed tear right at the end of the season. But Penn State played tough in their final two road games of the season against Illinois and Rutgers. Illinois claimed the No. 1 seed in the Big Ten tournament and Rutgers earned a double-bye with the No. 4 seed.
Penn State and Minnesota split their regular-season series with a pair of games played within a week of each other after an earlier matchup had to be rescheduled. Minnesota handed Penn State a 76-70 loss in the first meeting in mid-February. Penn State blew out the Gophers in the revenge game in Happy Valley five days later, with an upset of Michigan State in the middle for Penn State.
