Former Wisconsin men’s hockey player among Big Ten alums in NHL Stanley Cup Final

Former Wisconsin men’s hockey left wing Dylan Holloway is one of five Big Ten alums to reach the Stanley Cup Final this summer.

The 6-foot-1, 206-pounder will represent the Edmonton Oilers during their 2024 title run. Pitted against the Florida Panthers, the Edmonton Oilers laced up for game one on Saturday night in Sunrise, Florida.

Holloway will share the ice with fellow conference alumni Zach Hyman, William Lockwood, Mackie Samoskevich and Kyle Okposo. Hyman, Lockwood and Samoskevich represented the University of Michigan during their collegiate tenures, and Okposo attended the University of Minnesota before making the jump to the NHL.

Drafted 14th overall in the 2020 NHL Draft, Holloway played his final season at UW in 2020-21. The same season, he earned a First-Team All-Big Ten nod and was named a Top-10 finalist for the Hobey Baker Memorial Award as a sophomore.

Holloway appeared in 58 games during his two years in Madison and totaled 19 goals, 33 assists and 52 points from 2019-21.

Through two NHL seasons, the Bragg Creek, Alberta native has registered 18 points in 89 career games in Edmonton. He has scored three goals in 18 playoff games for the Oilers this postseason.

Two Michigan State hockey players honored with All-Big Ten selections

Two Michigan State hockey players honored with All-Big Ten selections

Well, this one might be a little controversial. Two Michigan State hockey players were honored with All-Big Ten selections on Tuesday, but only one of them made the First Team: Artyom Levshunov, the Spartans extremely talented freshman defenseman.

That’s not the one that may be controversial. What will be divisive is the fact that MSU goalie Trey Augustine was named to the Second Team, losing out on the First Team spot to Wisconsin goalie Kyle McClellan.

Both players were named to the All-Freshman team, as you’d expect.

Michigan State hockey head coach Adam Nightingale named Big Ten Coach of the Year

For the first time in the history of the award, a Michigan State hockey head coach is your Big Ten Coach of the Year. Adam Nightingale earned the honor after leading the Spartans to a 23-9-3 season and he will coach the Spartans against Michigan in the Big Ten Championship game on Saturday.

This is the most excitement we have seen around MSU hockey in years, and Nightingale is a huge part of that.

As every sports fan knows, records only mean so much when we get to the postseason.

In December, the Badgers swept the Buckeyes. Then during their next weekend series in February, Ohio State took three of the four points up for grabs, including an overtime win. That ended up being costly for Wisconsin as it gave Michigan State the regular season conference championship.

The stage is set for a huge weekend of hockey in the Big Ten, here’s how to catch all the action:

Michigan State hockey bounces back, beats Michigan in Ann Arbor

MSU bounces back, beats Michigan in Ann Arbor on Saturday night

Following an embarrassing 7-1 loss in East Lansing to rival Michigan on Friday night, the Spartans responded in a big way on Saturday, earning a 7-5 victory in Ann Arbor.

Though, it wasn’t easy, and it was a roller coaster ride in Ann Arbor for Spartan fans on Saturday.

It was another horrid start for Michigan State, going down 4-1 early into the second period, but the switch flipped. When that switch flipped, it flipped in a big way.

The Spartans responded with 6 unanswered goals, four of which coming in a seven minute span to end the second period, taking a 5-4 lead.

The Big Ten leading Spartans will be back in action at Munn Ice Arena next weekend against Minnesota.

No. 12 Michigan State hockey knocks off No. 13 Ohio State, sweeps the Buckeyes

No. 12 Michigan State knocks off No. 13 Ohio State in game two, sweeps the Buckeyes

A week after the Spartans went to Massachusetts for a battle with No. 3 Boston College, that the Spartans unfortunately got swept in albeit played competitively, MSU traveled to Ohio State for their Big Ten opener against the Buckeyes.

After defeating the Buckeyes in the first game of the series on Friday, 6-0, the Spartans came back on Saturday to complete the sweep, defeating OSU, 6-4.

The game winning goal came from Tanner Kelly with 5:58 remaining in the game. Defenseman Nash Nienhuis added an empty net goal to seal the deal for Michigan State.

Isaac Howard, Patrick Geary and Gavin O’Connell (x2) also picked up tallies for the Spartans.

The Spartans will return home next weekend for another Big Ten series against Penn State.

Notre Dame’s Ryan Bischel makes Richter Award Watch List

Congrats, Ryan!

One of Notre Dame’s strong points this season has been at goaltender. [autotag]Ryan Bischel[/autotag] is the clear standout, and those who follow college hockey for a living seem to agree. Bischel has been named to the watch list for the Mike Richter Award, which is awarded annually to the best collegiate goaltender. The award hasn’t even been around for a decade, but the Irish already boast a winner in [autotag]Cale Morris[/autotag], who captured the honor in 2018.

Bischel leads all collegiate goaltenders in shutouts with four, and that’s only the beginning. He has the second-most saves in the country with 673, and he has a 2.70 goals against average and a .924 save percentage. Earlier this season, he was named the Big Ten’s Third Star of the Week.

We don’t know what more Bischel can offer this season, but it’s unlikely that he’s finished proving himself. The Irish will go as far as he can take them, which hopefully will be far.
