Social Media reacts to Southern Cal and UCLA joining Big Ten in 2024

Big changes are coming to the Big Ten and college football.

It’s official, in 2024, the University of Southern California and UCLA will join the Big Ten Conference. The two schools were notified Thursday night that all 14 member schools had unanimously approved their application to join the conference.

Conference realignment continues to be a consistent storyline of the last decade, and that story won’t end anytime soon. See below for social media reactions from conference officials, school administrators, and media members on the biggest story in college football this year. The Trojans and the Bruins are joining the Big Ten. A conference once confined to the great lakes region now stretches from one coast to the other. And I don’t think Comishoner Kevin Warren and Big Ten Conference are yet done. I’m willing to guarantee that more teams are coming to the now 16-team conference.

Report: Washington and Oregon may be eyeing to join the Big Ten alongside USC and UCLA

USC and UCLA made the jump from the PAC-12 to the Big Ten, officially set to join the conference in 2024. It is no secret that other schools will likely make an attempt to follow the two schools. Two schools that are already prospecting the idea of piggybacking USC and UCLA to the conference are the Washington Huskies and Oregon Ducks. It is reported the two schools have applied for entry into the conference.

All the social best media reactions and information from the craziest day in Pac-12 history

Did you just get home from work and see that the Pac-12 conference blew up? Yea, that happened… Here’s everything you need to know about a historic day in college football.

The headline says “the craziest day in Pac-12 history,” but let’s call this what it really is — the beginning of the end for the conference as a whole.

On Thursday morning, it was reported that the USC Trojans and UCLA Bruins were planning to leave the Pac-12 conference and join the Big Ten conference, starting in 2024. What followed, of course, was a slew of questions.

Why would the Trojans and Bruins do this? Where does that leave teams like the Oregon Ducks or Washington Huskies? What about the middling teams in the Pac-12 like Oregon State and Colorado? Ultimately, will the Pac-12 even survive?

We don’t have a lot of those answers, but it’s been an information overload on Twitter throughout the day. We’ve done our best to gather the pertinent information you need, as well as some of the best and funniest reactions as well. Here’s what you need to know:

Official: UCLA to join the Big Ten with USC in 2024

UCLA will officially be joining the Big Ten in 2024

In partnership with USC, UCLA will also be joining the Big Ten in 2024. A move that was rumored to take place is now official, and the Big Ten Conference will be expanding to the west coast and California.

This move by the conference looks to be a direct response to the SEC adding Texas and Oklahoma to their conference.

In what already looks like a major shift in the landscape of college football, it may not be done just yet, and several teams may look to position themselves to join the conference alongside these two powerhouse schools.

REPORT: Two Pac-12 teams are talking about joining the Big Ten as soon as 2024

Huge conference realignment news for the Big Ten, as two Pac-12 schools are in conversations to join the conference:

As first reported by Pac-12 insider Jon Wilner and The Athletic senior writer Nicole Auerbach, the USC Trojans and UCLA Bruins are in conversations to join the Big Ten conference as soon as 2024.

This would be a groundbreaking move for the Big Ten conference, which has remained unchanged since Rutgers and Maryland joined the Big Ten East in 2014. This is the first major realignment proposed for the conference since the most recent round of power five conference shifts, which include Texas and Oklahoma going from the Big-12 to the SEC in 2025.

If USC and UCLA were to join the Big Ten, they would most likely join the western division for football and could provide a balance in strength between the divisions.

My wife ranks the Big Ten uniforms

This list is going to be… interesting.

Last Sunday, my wife ranked all the Big Ten mascots. That idea was very well received, so she asked if she could come back and rank the uniforms of all the teams in the conference. If your school has a red uniform, then I’ll say this, I’m sorry. She just didn’t like how many Big Ten schools wore either red or some variation of the color red on their uniform. Everything on this list is flipped and mixed around.

If you’ve enjoyed this series, then fret not, as we’ll be back again next week as she takes a closer looker at Big Ten team helmets. But for now, it’s time to look at the list of who my wife thinks has the best and the worst uniforms among all the Big Ten teams. Her final words about this list were, “everyone is going to be mad at me.” I reassured her that isn’t true… unless you’re an Ohio State fan.

Where does Nebraska stand in all-time wins among Big Ten teams?

The Big Ten has some hefty totals in all-time program wins!

On May 20, 1949, the Michigan State Spartans joined what was then known as the Big Nine Conference and adopted the Big Ten moniker as we know it today. The conference would remain unchanged for 40 years, and then in 1990, it would accept the membership of football independent Penn State. The conference would look into adding teams like Missouri and Kansas in the mid-90s as the Big Eight would transition to the Big 12. They even talked to Notre Dame in 1999 about joining the conference full-time, but those talks failed partly due to the Irish’s desire to retain their independent home broadcast contract.

The expansion would not occur until July 1, 2011, when the University of Nebraska applied and was approved for membership. Fun fact, this was the third time that Nebraska had applied for Big Ten membership as they first petitioned in 1900 and 1911 but were denied both times. However, the third time is a charm. Further expansion would occur in July 2014 as Maryland and Rutgers joined as the 13th and 14th member schools.

The list below looks at the all-time records for each school’s football program. Even with their struggles, Nebraska features prominently on the list.

Big Ten could be the first conference to reach mega deal for media rights

Big pay day coming for Nebraska and the Big Ten?

With the current media deal for the Big Ten set to expire, the conference is in line to get a new deal. They could be on the track to earning a record deal.

According to John Ourand, they could be the first to get $1 billion per year in media rights. He spoke on a podcast with Andrew Marchand. “From what I am told.” Ourchand said, “the Big Ten Conference is going to be the first college conference to earn more than $1 billion per year in media rights.”

That is quite a huge number to try and wrap our heads around. With the number of schools in the conference, that is a huge payout for schools. This could help close the gap with the SEC in terms of how much they can pour into their athletic programs in terms of facilities.

It remains to be seen which networks would line up to land this massive deal.

Changes are being discussed for Big Ten football and could happen soon

Could this be the end of divisions for the Big Ten conference?

We told you last week that the NCAA has approved changes effective immediately relaxing restrictions on FBS conference championship games. Basically, conference championship games no longer require participants to be from separate divisions. The Pac-12 made changes soon after the NCAA’s ruling and now it looks like the Big Ten will follow suit.

Matt Charboneau of the Detroit News reported that Michigan State athletic director, Alan Haller has said that Big Ten realignment is being discussed and that changes could be coming soon. “Changes” could mean a plethora of things, but most believe it could lead to the elimination of divisions.

The Big Ten introduced divisions in 2011 when it adopted a conference championship game. The divisions were originally named Leaders and Legends with no attention to geographical locations. After much backlash, the conference realigned in 2014 to more traditional East and West divisions.

While we’re not sure exactly what these changes will equate to, it sounds like it’s going to happen sooner rather than later. We’ll keep you up to speed as those changes are made known.
