Watch: Joe Starkey calls epic end of 1982 Big Game

Still an incredible moment 40 years later.

When California comes to Notre Dame Stadium to play the Irish, it’ll be bringing legendary radio announcer Joe Starkey along with it. Starkey, who has called Bears games since 1975, is retiring at the end of the season. The Bears’ last visit to South Bend predates Starkey’s tenure, so this undoubtedly will be a big moment for him. However, nothing he’s ever done can compare to his call in the final minute of the 1982 Big Game against Stanford:

You probably have heard everything about this if you’re a college football fan. It was John Elway’s last game for the Cardinal, there is controversy as to whether the play should have been blown dead at midfield, and of course, the Stanford band had an intimate view of the winning touchdown. Starkey’s call brought it all to another level, and Irish fans should appreciate his presence at Saturday’s game. That man has history attached to him, and he deserves respect.

Rare battle between rhino and buffalo caught on video

A ranger in South Africa’s Kariega Game Reserve has captured “extremely rare” footage showing a white rhinoceros in head-to-head battle with a Cape buffalo.

A ranger in a South African game reserve has captured “extremely rare” footage showing a white rhinoceros in head-to-head battle with a ferocious buffalo.

The tale of the tape favors the rhino – they can weigh nearly 6,000 pounds – but the 1,500-pound Cape buffalo proved a worthy and formidable opponent.

“The incredible strength of both species is on display here as well as the obstinate nature of the buffalo!” Kariega Game Reserve wrote on Facebook. “Completed with great commentary by the guests present.”

In the footage, best viewed with sound, other buffalo gather around the combatants as if to enjoy a better view. A female rhino and her calf observe from a safer distance.

Remarkably, the same ranger and guide, Wayne Deryck Howarth, captured footage three years ago showing a battle involving the same rhino and possibly the same buffalo.

Kariega Game Reserve stated that the male rhino had recently been trailing the female rhino and her calf and “is probably full of romance and testosterone.”

The reserve described what the tour group witnessed as “an extremely rare sighting.”

Why Stanford Will Win

The offense is working okay, but the defense hasn’t been able to put it together quite yet. The mediocre Cal offense should help the cause.

The Cardinal couldn’t hold up against the Oregon running game in the opener, and last week it struggled too much to come up with a stop against the Colorado ground attack – losing both games.

Cal’s ground game isn’t strong enough to take over, there’s not enough of a downfield passing game to mater, and most of all, the problem is coming from an offensive front allowing way too many plays in the backfield.

The Golden Bears after two games are dead last in the Pac-12 in total offense, but …

Why Cal Will Win

Stanford isn’t generating a lick of of a pass rush to take advantage of the struggles on the Cal offensive front.

It hasn’t been a pretty start for the Bears, but they’ve been thrown into a rough run with the last-minute trip to UCLA, and then came the struggles against the Oregon State balance. But now the Bears get a chance to keep things moving against a Stanford defense that’s not able to get off the field.

The Cardinal might be great at controlling the clock, but they’re awful on third downs – Oregon and Colorado combined to convert a whopping 17 of 25 third down tries – and Cal is overdue to start playing stronger and sharper.

Finally, QB Chase Garbers should get a little time to work.

What’s Going To Happen

It has been a wildly disappointing season for both teams, and the loser’s campaign is effectively over after this. Going 0-3 is bad enough, but to start winless and lose this game.

Finally, Cal gets a home game against a team that’s going to fit its style. Deliberate, ball control, strong defense.

Can the Bear offense finally start to do something well? The defense will play just a bit better as Cal will look like it needed the two games under its belt to finally start playing like it’s supposed to.
