Watch: Joe Starkey calls epic end of 1982 Big Game

Still an incredible moment 40 years later.

When California comes to Notre Dame Stadium to play the Irish, it’ll be bringing legendary radio announcer Joe Starkey along with it. Starkey, who has called Bears games since 1975, is retiring at the end of the season. The Bears’ last visit to South Bend predates Starkey’s tenure, so this undoubtedly will be a big moment for him. However, nothing he’s ever done can compare to his call in the final minute of the 1982 Big Game against Stanford:

You probably have heard everything about this if you’re a college football fan. It was John Elway’s last game for the Cardinal, there is controversy as to whether the play should have been blown dead at midfield, and of course, the Stanford band had an intimate view of the winning touchdown. Starkey’s call brought it all to another level, and Irish fans should appreciate his presence at Saturday’s game. That man has history attached to him, and he deserves respect.
