Big 12 passing leaders heading into Week 6

Ranking the passing leaders for each team in the Big 12.

Besides No. 3 Texas and No. 12 Oklahoma, the Big 12 conference has had a lackluster start. The conference’s new teams have struggled, while the expected powerhouses are near the bottom.

Texas, Oklahoma, West Virginia, and Kansas State find themselves undefeated in conference play whilst Oklahoma State, UCF, Cincinnati, and Houston have yet to manage a win thus far.

Through five weeks, we have a pretty decent idea of who the top dogs are in the conference and which programs are at the bottom of the totem pole.

Each team in the Big 12 is led by quarterbacks who are in either in contention for the Heisman Trophy or just trying to keep their team afloat.

Either way, the quarterback position is arguably the most important one on the roster, and here are the passing leaders for each team in the Big 12.

Athlon Sports ranks the Big 12 QB rooms going into the 2022 season

Here is how Athlon Sports ranked every Big 12 quarterback room entering the 2022 season.

The Big 12 Conference is known for producing excellent quarterback play year in and year out.

The new season will feature many fresh faces around the entire conference. Oklahoma State’s Spencer Sanders is the only surefire starter returning from the 2021 season. The transfer portal brought five new quarterbacks to the Big 12, eyeing starting jobs in the fall. Notables include Quinn Ewers (Texas), JT Daniels (West Virginia), Dillon Gabriel (Oklahoma) and Adrian Martinez (Kansas State).

Quarterback battles are expected to take place at Texas, Texas Tech and TCU. Baylor’s Blake Shapen already beat out Gerry Bohannon to take hold of the job in spring ball.

Athlon Sports released their annual 2022 college football preview magazine, where they took a look at each quarterback situation in the Big 12.

Oklahoma State got top spot in large part due to Spencer Sanders coming back for his senior season. Oklahoma and West Virginia round out the top three after the additions of Gabriel and Daniels.

Here is how Athlon Sports ranked every Big 12 quarterback room entering the 2022 season.

In-depth look at the new quarterbacks in the Big 12 this season

The Big 12 will look way different this season, thanks to a slew of new quarterbacks joining the conference.

This offseason of college football may have had the most movement of players around the country we have ever seen.

Some of the players hitting the transfer portal was expected, as with the new one-time transfer rule there has been an all-time high of player movement as the athletes no longer have to sit behind someone and wait their turn.

However, the amount of quality of athletes playing what seemed to be the most interesting game of musical chairs ever was something that we did not expect.

Starting with the biggest storyline of the offseason, Oklahoma’s former head coach Lincoln Riley took the USC job, and superstar quarterback Caleb Williams followed him to California. Spencer Rattler also flew the coop, as he left Norman and is now in South Carolina.

The Riley-Williams saga seemed to have the whole college football world enamored, and Williams’ decision to transfer actually impacted where other quarterbacks like USC’s Jaxson Dart, Texas’ Casey Thompson, and UCF’s Dillon Gabriel ended up.

Now that all the dust has settled, it is safe to say that the Big 12 conference was one of the most affected by the large amount of quarterback movement, as a handful of the programs will likely be trotting out a quarterback that was playing at a different university last season.

A few Big 12 programs may have new starting quarterbacks that were already on the roster, such as Iowa State and TCU, but here are the new faces at quarterback to join the Big 12 this offseason.

Grading the big 12 quarterbacks through the first four weeks

The Big 12 has been home to some very good and very bad quarterback play thus far.

College football is in full swing, and this year is making out to be one of the most crazy years in recent memory with ranked teams dropping like flies, and unranked teams emerging from the shadows.

The Big 12 likely has been the most surprising conference through the first four weeks, as the two preseason favorites, Oklahoma and Iowa Sate, have both been major disappointments. The Sooners may be the least convincing 4-0 team in the nation, while the Cyclones already have two losses on the season.

Schools like Texas, Oklahoma State, Baylor, and even Kansas State have all looked much more impressive than the aforementioned preseason favorites. One of the main reasons for Oklahoma and Iowa State’s troubles is the poor performance from their star quarterbacks, Spencer Rattler and Brock Purdy.

The Big 12 is home to some of the best passers in the nation, typically stemming from Oklahoma, but this year there has showcased solid quarterback play from others not donning an Oklahoma jersey.

It is time for some early season report cards. First, I’ll grade each of the quarterbacks in the Big 12 and how they have performed through Week 4. Keep in mind that this is not a ranking of who is the most talented quarterback, but rather who has been playing the best football to start the season.

Top 10 passers in the Big 12 through Week 4

Where does Texas QB Casey Thompson rank among the Big 12?

Quarterback controversy has been riddled throughout the Big 12 this season, especially in Austin. When the season started out well with Hudson Card against Louisiana, he was thought to be the guy. Now, Casey Thompson has led Texas’ offense to new heights.

As far as the top passers this season goes, Thompson barely breaks the top 10 thanks to only starting two games. With how explosive the offense has been over the past two games, he will continue to rise up the board.

Spencer Rattler was seen as the surefire passing yard leader before the season and so far, it’s true. However, fans in Norman do not seem too pleased with the former five-star quarterback, asking for Caleb Williams to replace him. Until further notice, though, Rattler is going to be Lincoln Riley’s man.

Texas Tech is the only program with two quarterbacks on the list. Starter Tyler Shough got injured last week, giving Henry Colombi some playing time.
