Jake Paul told people ‘bet the mortgage’ on his fight, then made the dumbest excuse when he lost

76% of the public money was riding on Paul.

Welcome to the Winner’s Circle, a weekly column by Bet For The Win senior writer Prince J. Grimes.

For the first time in his short boxing career, Jake Paul took an L.

The YouTube star lost to Tommy Fury by split decision Sunday in a mini upset according to oddsmakers who had Paul as a slight favorite despite his limited experience.

There won’t be any shame for Paul losing a close fight to the half-brother of world heavyweight champion Tyson Fury who entered the ring with an undefeated record of his own. But Paul (6-1) should be ashamed of the excuses he made for why he lost to Fury (9-0).

Especially after telling everyone to “bet the mortgage” on a fourth-round knockout.

I hope no-one actually followed through on that advice, because not only did Paul lose as the -125 favorite, he revealed after the fight several ailments he battled during camp.

“Honestly, I felt flat. I got sick really bad twice in this camp, injured my arm. So, it wasn’t my best performance,” Paul said. “But I lost. I’m not making excuses, I’m just saying it wasn’t my best performance. I felt a little flat.”

I don’t know, Jake. Those sound exactly like excuses to me. Very bad excuses that, if true, were probably worth considering before telling people to bet large sums of money.

I understand part of being a great boxer is being a great salesman, and Paul has the latter part mastered. He even made his own bet during the heated pre-fight press conference to double Fury’s earnings with a win.

But Paul isn’t your typical boxer. Paul is the owner of a sports betting platform called Betr, and he has considerable sway with a young audience that might just bet on something because he says so. That was a point of contention during his awkward interview with Bomani Jones.

Boxers are supposed to project confidence, but Paul’s very specific choice of betting terminology seemed intentional — and irresponsible. We’ll never know just how much his bold prediction played into the final betting stats, but the public hammered his odds at BetMGM. A whopping 76% of the money wagered on the fight was on Paul, and 57% of the bets.

Paul’s brother Logan even joined in on the bold betting talk, saying he’d bet his equity in Prime (energy drinks) on Jake getting a win.

Rapper Drake, who might be more friend than fan of Paul, actually did bet the equivalent of a mortgage — on a very nice home — losing $400,000 on Paul.

And they weren’t the only influencers peddling confidence in Fury through a sports betting lens.

In the end, everyone lost except Fury.

But even in taking an L, Paul comes out a winner because he earned two very good pay days: the one on Sunday and the inevitable rematch down the road. Hopefully, the public doesn’t fall for the shenanigans next time.

Million Dollar Marco wins $2.8M on a parlay including Vikings’ epic comeback, Raiders’ last-second miracle

No, he didn’t hedge. Yes, he nearly cashed out. And there’s a logical reason he let it ride.

Marco Piemonte could see it in Jeff Saturday’s play-calling. The Colts were about to blow a 33-point lead in Minnesota.

Indianapolis was passing on second down, choosing not to work the clock and the Vikings were finally starting to string some drives together.

With the Colts up 36-14, and the Vikes +700 live on the moneyline, Marco made his move. He jumped on Minnesota’s odds to finish off the largest comeback in NFL history and parlayed it with a few other picks he’d already tossed out on his 100x Club podcast; Browns ML, Dolphins +7, Jaguars +4, Raiders ML (+9191), dropping $31,000 to win $2.88 million.

It miraculously cashed, and the journey to get there was unlike any Marco had experienced. He found himself on the right side of three completely bonkers finishes that are still hard to comprehend 24 hours later.

“This parlay will go down as my best win ever,” Piemonte told BetFTW on Monday. “Three storybook comebacks and the most insane ending in the world that football has ever seen with the Raiders.”

From the comfort of the his suburban Chicago home, Marco watched his 12th successful million dollar parlay of the year cash surrounded by a few friends and a representative from DraftKings. The moment the Patriots inexplicably lateraled a win to Las Vegas was captured by Betr and shows Piemonte’s appropriately stunned reaction.

(WARNING: There’s NSFW language in the video below)

“I thought I was going to pass out when [Chandler Jones] was running to the end zone,” Piemonte said.

If the end of the Raiders game was pure joy, the Jaguars-Cowboys game was pure exhaustion.

Piemonte thought he was cooked after Dallas went up 27-10 in the third quarter. Then Jacksonville scored three straight touchdowns to bring him back to life before a wild pick-six in overtime brought him one leg from nearly $3 million.

“That was the most excruciating game,” Piemonte said. “At least get me to the [afternoon] games. Don’t cut my day now. When that game was over it was a surreal feeling.”

That’s not to say things got any easier for him while the Raiders were battling the Pats. And, yes, Marco did think about either hedging or cashing out. But he didn’t have enough money left in his account to hedge.

“The cashout got as high as $2.4 million,” Marco said. “I’m not going to lie, I thought about clicking the button. Take the win, move on.”

The only reason he didn’t? Dinner arrived at the house, momentarily taking his attention away from the TV. Unfortunately, that was also the moment the Raiders threw a pick-six. That put the Pats within a touchdown of tying the game and dropped the cashout to zero.

Piemonte was crushed, convinced his bet was about to bust. Then Las Vegas tied the game with 30 seconds left.

“When the Raiders tied it the cashout went from zero back to $2.4 million,” Marco said. “I thought I had zero so you just have to live with it.”

Now he’s living with an extra $2.8 million sitting in his account. Marco said he’s up $9 million on the year but none of those wins come close to this one.

One of the wildest weekends in NFL history will go down as the latest bit of magic for Million Dollar Marco.

Jake Paul launches sports betting and media company Betr: ‘The TikTok-ification of sports betting’

Travis Scott and Ezekiel Elliott are just a couple of Betr’s many investors.

Jake Paul, the YouTuber turned boxer, announced Monday the launch of his new sports betting company, Betr. Founded by Paul and sports betting entrepreneur Joey Levy, Betr is touted as the first direct-to-consumer sports betting company with a focus on micro-betting.

A company press release, explains micro-betting as “a new form of betting that introduces instant gratification to the sports betting user experience by enabling the moments that drive U.S. sports consumption – such as pitches & at-bats of baseball games and plays & drives of football games – to become discrete betting opportunities.”

In addition to betting, Betr will also dive into sports media and content creation.

Betr has raised $50 million in funding from investors, including rapper Travis Scott, NFL running back Ezekiel Elliott and wide receiver Braxton Berrios, former players Richard Sherman and Dez Bryant and the co-owners of the 49ers, Celtics and Marlins to name a few.

“I wasn’t into sports betting until I was introduced to micro-betting,” Paul said in the release. “Micro-betting is the TikTok-ification of sports betting and I am excited to bring it to the masses through Betr.”
