10 prospects of interest for the Commanders on Day 3

We highlight 10 prospects of interest for the Commanders as Day 3 kicks off.

The Washington Commanders go on the clock early in round four of the 2023 NFL draft, holding the No. 118 overall selection. Overall, the Commanders have five selections on Day 3.

Washington addressed the secondary in the first two rounds, selecting cornerbacks Emmanuel Forbes [No. 16] and Jartavius Martin [No. 47], and added center Ricky Stromberg [No. 97] late in the third round.

What positions are of most interest for Washington on Day 3? The Commanders could still target the offensive line, with some intriguing talents still on the board.

Here are 10 prospects who could interest Washington when round four kicks off.

Broncos enter NFL draft valuing BPA over roster needs

The Broncos have a few roster needs going into the draft, but Sean Payton says the team will stick to its big board and not reach for needs.

As the Denver Broncos prepare for the start of the NFL draft this week, the club has set its draft board and plans to select “the best player available” when they go on the clock with each pick.

That doesn’t mean the Broncos’ don’t have roster needs — they do. Denver could use more help at cornerback, center and on the defensive line, among other positions.

The Broncos do not plan to reach for any of those needs during the draft, though. If a player at that position falls to them at the top of the remaining players on their big board, Denver will select him. And if a player who isn’t at a big need position falls to them, the Broncos will select him.

“[W]e’re going to grade these guys and make sure that we’re getting the best available player,” coach Sean Payton said during his pre-draft press conference last week. “If the best player on the board is a defensive end or offensive guard and we have a clear vision, that’ll happen. If the draft ends and we’ve got a receiver, a tight end — in other words, some of that is subjective to how this thing unfolds. …

“It’s hard to say [how the draft will fall]. We would look at a list — and we’re not going to share the list with you — but we would look at [it like], ‘These were some things we’d like to get out of this draft, if it’s possible.’ But there’s an ‘if’ there, and we recognize that.”

The draft will begin on Thursday evening, but barring a trade, the Broncos will not make their first selection until the third round on Friday.

After filling holes in free agency, Broncos can truly draft ‘the best player available’

After filling roster holes in free agency, the Broncos don’t have to reach for needs during the NFL draft.

Every team preaches drafting “the best player available” (BPA) when they go on the clock, but that doesn’t stop clubs from reaching to address needs every year.

This year, after patching numerous roster holes during free agency, the Denver Broncos can truly target the BPA when they go on the clock in the third round, regardless of the player’s position.

“We’re going to take the best player,” Broncos general manager George Paton said during his pre-draft press conference last week. “We were really aggressive in free agency. We wanted to fill as many holes with as many quality players that fit the prototype and fit our culture as we could. They just so happened to be on offense. We feel like we filled a lot of those holes.

“Now, we can draft the best player. We were good on defense last year, and we still have some talent on defense. We have a foundation. We’re not going to stretch to draft a defensive player. Both of our mindsets is to draft the best player, no matter where we are in the draft.”

When Paton says “our mindsets,” he is referring to the mindsets of himself and new head coach Sean Payton. After going heavy on offense in free agency, there’s been speculation that Denver might go heavy on defense during the draft.

While Payton admitted that the team will enter the draft with a few positions they would like to upgrade, but he and Paton both said the Broncos won’t reach to address specific positions.

“We would look at a list — and we’re not going to share the list with you — but we would look at [it like], ‘These were some things we’d like to get out of this draft, if it’s possible,’” Payton said. “But there’s an ‘if’ there, and we recognize that.”

The first round of the draft will begin on Thursday. Denver is not scheduled to pick until the third round on Friday, barring a trade.

NEXT: 2021 NFL Mock Draft Fourth Round Picks 21-39

Talent-rich Packers feeling free to trade up or pick best player available

Packers GM Brian Gutekunst, confident in his talented roster, is feeling comfortable about options to trade up or taking the best player regardless of position.

Green Bay Packers general manager Brian Gutekunst is confident in the current construction of his roster, providing freedom to both aggressively move up in the draft or stay put and pick the best player on the board without worrying too much about need.

While Gutekunst said need can sometimes be a tiebreaker between equally-graded prospects, he doesn’t believe there is a pressing need on his roster entering the draft.

“We feel like we could go play, we have a very good football team coming back, which gives me a little more freedom, I think, as we attack the board and go with the best player,” Gutekunst said Monday.

The Packers retained a bulk of last year’s roster despite significant salary cap challenges. The team brought back running back Aaron Jones, tight ends Robert Tonyan and Marcedes Lewis, cornerbacks Kevin King and Chandon Sullivan, defensive lineman Tyler Lancaster and safety Will Redmond, helping patch potential weak points with returning veteran players.

Even at potential need positions, like cornerback, offensive tackle and the defensive line, the Packers have several experienced players coming back in 2021.

Targeting short-term needs in the draft can be a recipe for disaster. The Packers, ranked as the fourth-most talented team entering the draft according to Pro Football Focus, can focus more on acquiring the most talented and highest potential players regardless of position.

“For the most part, we try to look at the draft as a long-term investment in the Green Bay Packers,” Gutekunst said.

The freedom entering the draft also applies to aggressively maneuvering around the board, especially early.

In each of the last three drafts, Gutekunst has traded up in the first round to get a player: cornerback Jaire Alexander in 2018, safety Darnell Savage in 2019 and quarterback Jordan Love in 2020.

The Packers pick 29th overall in the first round but have 10 total picks, making Gutekusnt a prime candidate to move up again on Thursday night. He said it is “always tempting” to trade up to get players, especially when picking late in the round.

“When you’re sitting at 29, and watching those kind of players come off the board that you have spent so much time studying and thinking about how they could affect your football team, it’s always tempting. You have to be careful,” Gutekunst said.

Targeting a game-changing player could be an attractive scenario for a team coming off back-to-back NFC Championship Game losses.

“At the same time, for me, if we have a chance to move up and take a specific player that we think is special, you have to consider that,” Gutekunst said. “The last three years, we’ve done that. We’ll always do that. There’s only so many game-changing type players in this league, and if you have the opportunity to acquire one, you have to consider it.”

Falcons 2021 Mock Draft: Best player available edition

The Atlanta Falcons’ new general manager, Terry Fontenot, believes in selecting the best player available in the NFL draft.

The Atlanta Falcons’ new general manager, Terry Fontenot, believes in selecting the best player available in the NFL draft — as opposed to Thomas Dimitroff’s philosophy of taking the best player at a position of need who fits the scheme.

Using the Draft Network’s Mock Draft Machine, we went with a no-trade scenario for this one to really see what a best player available mock would look like.

Colts’ Chris Ballard emphasizing best player available mentality

Chris Ballard emphasizes taking the best player available.

A philosophy that many general managers in the NFL have adopted is the idea of taking the best player available. While team needs and positional depth are definitely factors, most teams will draft players based on the most overall talented guys at that spot.

[lawrence-related id=42647]

Many teams will reach in the draft and grab a guy to fill an immediate need, even though the player may not be worth the pick. Whatever decisions were made in the past, Chris Ballard has nailed most of his draft picks whatever round they may be in.

Ballard said in his press conference on Friday that the urge to draft the best player available does not scare him. When asked about how he learned not to reach in the draft Ballard said, “I’ll tell you one. Everybody won’t say it now but taking Quenton Nelson. I mean everybody said you can’t take a guard at six. I mean, I even heard it – I mean I heard it in a lot of different spots. But you take the best player man.”

Ballard went on to praise Nelson and how much he has changed the culture in Indianapolis.

“Quenton Nelson was the best freaking player at that point in the draft. I’m not sure if he wasn’t the best player in the entire draft. That to me, solidified it and said ‘I don’t care what position he’s at. Take the best player.’ I think we know the impact that kid has had.”

Whether it was grabbing Nelson at No. 6, Leonard in the second round or trading draft picks out of the first round, Ballard has always wanted high value for draft picks. This year will be interesting as the Colts hold the Nos. 34 and 44 picks in the second round. Both picks are highly anticipated to fill some big holes in a young roster.

But Ballard is also open to trading back given his desire to add more picks.

There may be some surprises coming as the 2020 NFL Draft opens up on Thursday. One thing is for sure though, Chris Ballard and the rest of the front office will not be reaching on any player, no matter the pick.
