Bengals tabbed as team most likely to win more games in 2020

The Bengals had an abysmal season a year ago with a league-worst 2-14 record leading to drafting Joe Burrow no. 1 overall .
ESPN’s Bill Barnwell listed the Bengals alongside Dallas as the team most likely to win more games in 2020.
The Bengals were 0-7 in one-score games last season, an unlucky number, and suffered a litany of injuries including to WR AJ Green.
With some better injury luck and a new QB, the Bengals should be able to easily improve on a 2-win total in 2019

Look: Bengals share first on-field photo of QB Joe Burrow in uniform

We’ve seen plenty of edits of Joe Burrow in a Bengals uniform, and now we see it for real.

Former LSU quarterback Joe Burrow accomplished more than any Tigers signal-caller before him in Baton Rouge, and now he has a chance to prove his talents translate to the NFL level.

We’ve seen a host of edits and photoshopped images of Burrow in a Cincinnati Bengals uniform since the team selected him first overall in the 2020 NFL Draft, but we’ve only recently had a chance to see it for real.

The Bengals took to Twitter with a photo of Burrow throwing in his uniform this week, referencing the “In the pocket like Burrow” line from rapper Jack Harlow’s “WHAT’S POPPIN.”

Expectations are high for the Heisman Trophy winner as the Bengals look to right the ship after a dismal 2-14 finish to the season in 2019.

As with any rookie, there’s a considerable jump to be made between college and the NFL, but given Burrow’s practically unparalleled mental quickness, Football IQ and work ethic, many in Baton Rouge are betting on a smooth transition.

It will be interesting to see how things play out for him and the rest of the team when the Bengals begin their season on Sept. 13 against the Los Angeles Chargers in Paul Brown Stadium.

It was reported last week by The Athletic’s Jeff Schultz that the Falcons had agreed to terms with free-agent cornerback Darqueze Dennard.

However, the team didn’t officially sign him until this morning.

In eight seasons, the former Bengals CB has racked up 268 tackles (200 solo), three interceptions and 22 passes defended.

Dennard would be best utilized as a nickel, although he has the versatility to line up wherever the Falcons need him most.

With so much youth and inexperience at the cornerback spot, Dennard’s veteran presence is a welcome addition that brings some much-needed leadership to Atlanta’s secondary.

Former Notre Dame star Khalid Kareem signs his rookie deal

Khalid Kareem fell in the draft because of a shoulder injury but was able to sign his rookie deal on Thursday. How much did he get?

Khalid Kareem was a big reason for Notre Dame’s strong ability to get after opposing quarterbacks the last two seasons and looks to help the Cincinnati Bengals improve their defense this season.

The fifth round pick of the Bengals from the 2020 NFL Draft agreed to terms with the team Thursday and is set for training camp to open.  The four year deal is estimated to be worth roughly $2.6 million.

Kareem suffered a shoulder injury last season that kept him out of Senior Bowl activities and didn’t allow him to workout at the combine which is seemingly the main reason he fell to the fifth round.

Kareem recorded 88 tackles, 20.5 tackles for loss and ten sacks over the last two seasons at Notre Dame while forcing four fumbles and returning a fumble recovery for a touchdown last season.

13. New York Giants

The Giants added cornerback James Bradberry and former Green Bay Packers linebacker Blake Martinez, who is a tackling machine.

Bradberry should improve the secondary while defensive coordinator Patrick Graham should improve the defense as they switch to the 3-4.

Second-round pick Xavier McKinney, a safety out of Alabama, should add a playmaker to the secondary as well.

The addition of defensive end Leonard Williams was huge as well.

Top 5 landing spots for Dre Kirkpatrick

Former Alabama CB Dre Kirkpatrick is now a free agent after being released by the Cincinnati Bengals. Here are five possible landing spots.

Dre Kirkpatrick was a standout player while at Alabama, and was a key piece within the Cincinnati Bengals secondary after being drafted in the first round of the 2012 NFL draft.

The 30-year old Alabama native was cut by the Bengals after the 2019 season, spending eight years with the franchise. His injuries and age were possible causes for concern by the Bengals front office.

Let’s explore some options for Dre Kirkpatrick and see which teams might benefit from picking up the veteran.

5. Miami Dolphins

Douglas DeFelice-USA TODAY Sports

The Dolphins are in the later phases of an all-out rebuild. Their secondary was a focal point which now consists of cornerbacks Xavien Howard and Byron Jones and safeties Bobby McCain and Eric Rowe.

While it may seem that there is no room for Kirkpatrick, it’s important to remember that he will likely be serving a supporting role in any secondary he joins. Utilizing him in rotation with Jones and Howard could give Miami some stability and comfort if their stars are unable to be on the field.
