Bernard, 29, joined the Bengals in 2013 and had been a staple of the organization. But after some huge free-agency spending, the team needed roughly $4 million in wiggle room the release creates.

Bengals agree to terms with free-agent DB Ricardo Allen

Wednesday, the Bengals agreed to terms with free-agent safety Ricardo Allen, according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter. It’s a one-year deal, confirmed by Allen’s reps.
Allen, 29, has been with the Falcons since 2015 and last year over 12 games posted a 62.4 PFF grade, picking off two passes in the process.
A depth move for a Bengals defense that has already added Chidobe Awuzie, Mike Hilton and Eli Apple to the secondary, Allen is a versatile type who can play corner or switch to a safety spot.
The move is yet the latest in a long line of resets for the defense, highlighted by the massive deal for edge rusher Trey Hendrickson

Bengals sign free-agent CB Eli Apple

The Bengals went out and got a former first-round cornerback during the second week of free agency with Eli Apple.
Apple, 25, was a former Ohio State standout who went 10th overall in 2016 before having a weird split with the Giants. He’s since played for two other teams, including a two-game stint with Carolina last year.
In 2020, Apple had a deal fall through with Las Vegas, then landed in Carolina where he played in those two games before getting cut due to an injury.
At this stage of his career, Apple is interesting depth for the Bengals as they otherwise hope to start Trae Waynes, Mike Hilton, and Chidobe Awuzie with Darius Phillips in there for good measure

Bengals agree to terms with free-agent CB Chidobe Awuzie

The Bengals have made another splash in free agency, agreeing to terms with former Cowboys cornerback Chidobe Awuzie.
NFL Network’s Mike Garafolo reported the news, citing the Bengals liking Awuzie’s athleticism and consistency as reasoning for the signing.
Awuzie, a second-round pick in 2017, graded at a 51.9 at Pro Football Focus last year, allowing 25 catches on 38 targets over eight games.
The defense was a disaster around him though, so 2019’s 72.2 grade over 16 games is a better indicator of what the Bengals are getting.
This signing would appear to mean the end of the William Jackson era in Cincinnati, as Awuzie is a boundary starter and the team still has to find a slot guy to replace Mackensie Alexander
