Son of former Bengal Dre Kirkpatrick commits to Alabama

A fun Bengals connection of note.

Dre Kirkpatrick Jr., son of former Cincinnati Bengals cornerback Dre Kirkpatrick, has officially committed to Alabama, the same school his dad was drafted out of in 2012.

In a video posted by Kirkpatrick on Instagram, he is emotional seeing his son holding up an Alabama jersey with his old jersey number.

Kirkpatrick Jr. is a 6-foot-tall safety in the class of 2024, 195 pounds and is a three-star rank on 247 Sports.

Kirkpatrick played in Cincinnati with the Bengals for eight years of his NFL career after being drafted in the first round. He had 10 interceptions in 99 games played. He last played in the NFL in the 2021 season with the San Francisco 49ers.

Now Kirkpatrick, the 33-year-old, will be able to watch his son play on the same college field he did not that long ago.

Class of 2024 safety Dre Kirkpatrick Jr. committed to Alabama on Friday evening. He chose the Crimson Tide over Auburn, Arkansas, and Missouri.

Kirkpatrick Jr.’s father, Dre Kirkpatrick, played for Saban at Alabama from 2009-2011. Now, his son will follow in his dad’s footsteps at Alabama.

Kirkpatrick Jr. received an offer from Alabama following an impressive showing at a July camp. The Alabama coaching staff had been keeping an eye on Kirkpatrick Jr. but were not pursuing him prior to him receiving an offer.

The Gadsden City High School standout has been recruited to play safety at Alabama. However, there is the possibility that he plays STAR. The STAR position is best suited for a player that is versatile enough to play cornerback and safety. Kirkpatrick Jr. fits the profile at six feet tall and 192 pounds.

Kirkpatrick Jr. is the sixth defensive back to commit to Alabama as a part of the 2024 recruiting class. He joins fellow commits Jaylen Mbakwe, Jameer Grimsley, Zabien Brown, Rydarrius “Red” Morgan, and Peyton Woodyard. Overall, the Crimson Tide have 18 commitments for the ’24 recruiting class.

49ers waive CB Dre Kirkpatrick

The #49ers waived CB Dre Kirkpatrick and opened opportunities for rookies.

The 49ers on Tuesday waived cornerback Dre Kirkpatrick in a move that could signal good news for the team’s 2021 draft class.

Kirkpatrick missed the 49ers’ Week 10 win over the Rams with an ankle injury he suffered the previous week. While Josh Norman started, rookies Ambry Thomas and Deommodore Lenoir were both active for the first time since Week 1.

The 49ers originally added Kirkpatrick as a depth piece while their secondary dealt with some injury issues. He wound up assuming the top reserve role while Thomas and Lenoir found their way. His release is an indication the 49ers are confident enough in their rookies to put them on the field should either Norman, cornerback Emmanuel Moseley or nickel cornerback K’Waun Williams be unavailable.

Kirkpatrick played in six games with one start and notched seven tackles.

49ers to sign CB Dre Kirkpatrick

The #49ers are signing CB Dre Kirkpatrick to assist their ailing secondary.

The 49ers’ shaky secondary depth was tested against the Lions late in San Francisco’s near Week 1 meltdown. They didn’t waste any time looking to remedy that issue, agreeing to a deal with free agent cornerback Dre Kirkpatrickagreeing to a deal with free agent cornerback Dre Kirkpatrick per NFL Media’s Ian Rapoport.

The 31-year-old spent the first eight seasons of his career with the Cincinnati Bengals before joining the Cardinals for the 2020 campaign. He played in 14 games with 11 starts for Arizona last year and hauled in three interceptions.

In his nine-year career Kirkpatrick has played in 113 games with 78 starts. He has 13 interceptions to go along with 72 pass breakups.

Kirkpatrick will join a secondary in a bit of disarray following a season-ending ACL tear for starter Jason Verrett. The 49ers’ other starter Emmanuel Moseley missed the season opener because of a knee injury, leaving veteran Dontae Johnson and rookies Deommodore Lenoir and Ambry Thomas as the only healthy options. Veteran Josh Norman was a healthy scratch as he gets back into playing shape.

San Francisco won’t need to work hard to clear a roster spot for the veteran cornerback. Verrett is set to go on season-ending injured reserve, and running back Raheem Mostert is also due to hit IR because of a knee injury he sustained against Detroit.

49ers working out former first-round pick Dre Kirkpatrick

#49ers working out former first-round pick Dre Kirkpatrick:

With some slight questions ongoing for the 49ers at the cornerback position, the team is bringing in a known name for a workout on Friday.

According to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport, the Niners will hold a workout with former first-round pick Dre Kirkpatrick:

As 49ers training camp got underway this week, the team was handed a tough break. Expected starting cornerback Emmanuel Moseley was placed on the Reserve/COVID-19 list. Tim Harris, a 2019 sixth-round pick, took over his spot with the first-team defense.

In addition, the Niners are generally inexperienced at the position. Depth players currently include Ambry Thomas and Deommodore Lenoir, rookies with no NFL experience. There had been talks of a reunion with Richard Sherman this offseason, however, his recent off-field issues might have pumped the brakes on that idea for the 49ers.

That could’ve helped turned the Niners’ attention to Kirkpatrick, who was a first rounder of the Bengals back in 2012. After spending eight years with Cincy, he skipped town to the NFC West, signing with the Cardinals in 2020.

In his career, Kirkpatrick has notched 13 interceptions and defended 72 passes. Just last season, he had three picks and seven pass breakups.

However, the fancy stats were not nice to him. Pro Football Focus graded the 31-year-old a poor 49.0 overall grade in 2020. His coverage number from the analytics outlet was even worse, a 46.1.

Despite that, the Patriots and Saints were two teams that still expressed interest in Kirkpatrick earlier this offseason.

Check back to Niners Wire for any updates regarding Kirkpatrick and the 49ers.

Report: Free agent CB Dre Kirkpatrick visited with the Patriots

Are the Patriots interested in adding some cornerback depth.

The New England Patriots hosted cornerback Dre Kirkpatrick for a visit on Thursday, according to NFL Media’s Ian Rapoport.

Kirkpatrick, a 2017 first-round pick out of Alabama, has spent his first eight seasons in the NFL with the Cincinnati Bengals before spending a season with the Arizona Cardinals. The 31-year-old cornerback has 13 career interceptions with 358 interceptions.

He’s a member of a deep group of free agent cornerbacks, which includes Richard Sherman, Steve Nelson, Bobby McCain, Josh Norman, Buster Skrine and Bahaud Breeland, among others.

New England has a deep cornerback group: Stephon Gilmore, J.C. Jackson, Jonathan Jones, Jalen Mills, Joejuan Williams and Michael Jackson, among others.

After the Patriots elected not to draft a cornerback and Jason McCourty signed with the Miami Dolphins, New England might be looking for more options at the position.
