Alexander Gustafsson vs. Ben Rothwell targeted for UFC Fight Night on May 21

Alexander Gustafsson will remain at heavyweight for his next bout.

[autotag]Alexander Gustafsson[/autotag] will remain at heavyweight for his next bout.

Gustafsson (18-7 MMA, 10-7 UFC) is expected to meet [autotag]Ben Rothwell[/autotag] (39-14 MMA, 9-8 UFC) on May 21 at UFC Fight Night, which doesn’t yet have a publicly known venue or location.

Two people with knowledge of the situation confirmed the targeted booking to MMA Junkie after an initial report by Frontkick Online. The people requested anonymity since the UFC has yet to make an announcement.

Gustafsson, a three-time UFC light heavyweight title challenger, came out of retirement in July 2020 but was quickly submitted by Fabricio Werdum in his heavyweight debut. He was then booked to face Paul Craig back down in his original weight class at UFC Fight Night 191, but he withdrew due to injury. The 35-year-old has decided against a return to 205 pounds and will take on longtime heavyweight contender Rothwell.

Rothwell has split his past four appearances. After submitting Chris Barnett in May, the 53-fight veteran was stopped in the first round by Marcos Rogerio de Lima at UFC Fight Night 197 in November.

With the addition, the UFC Fight Night on May 21 lineup includes:

  • Felipe Colares vs. Chase Hooper
  • Alexander Gustafsson vs. Ben Rothwell

UFC Fight Night 197 video: Marcos Rogerio de Lima TKOs Ben Rothwell in 32 seconds

Marcos Rogerio de Lima became the first to stop Ben Rothwell with strikes since 2009 in the UFC Fight Night 197 co-main event.

[autotag]Marcos Rogerio de Lima[/autotag] needed one opportunity to finish Ben Rothwell in the UFC Fight Night 197 co-main event.

In essentially the first exchange, de Lima (19-7-1 MMA, 8-5 UFC) put hands on Rothwell (39-14 MMA, 9-8 UFC) and staggered him backward toward the cage. He followed up with a big-time flurry, forcing referee Herb Dean to stop it just 32 seconds in.

The heavyweight bout was the UFC Fight Night 197 co-main event at the UFC Apex in Las Vegas. It streamed on ESPN+.

Check out the replay of de Lima’s triumph below (via Twitter):

Not only does de Lima register the most notable win of his career, but he gets consecutive victories for the first time since 2013. He’d alternated wins and losses over his past 11 fights but finally snapped that trend.

Rothwell, meanwhile, suffers his first knockout loss since October 2009.

“I knew it was a tough fight, all respect to Ben,” de Lima said through an interpreter during his post-fight interview with Michael Bisping. ”

Analyzing Saturday’s UFC Fight Night 197 odds and lines between Rothwell vs. de Lima, with MMA picks, tips and predictions.

The card can be viewed on ESPN+ with the prelims at 1 p.m. ET and the main card at 4 p.m. ET.

Rothwell stands three inches taller than his counterpart, and he’ll look to use a three-inch reach advantage to keep Rogerio de Lima at bay. He also holds a 3.71-to-3.24 significant strikes landed per minute advantage.

Rothwell picked up a submission victory in the second round last time out over Chris Barnett in May and has won three of his last four fights. Five of his last seven fights went the distance.

UFC Fight Night 197 Rothwell vs. de Lima: Odds, lines, predictions and picks

Records: Rothwell (39-13-0) | Rogerio de Lima (18-8-1)

Fight result (2-way line or money line)

ROTHWELL (-175) is the play as the moderate favorite here, as de Lima has been too erratic lately. He hasn’t won two consecutive fights since he was victorious in a TUF fight and his first UFC bout in 2014.

The veteran Rothwell has 41 finishes across his 52 career professional bouts, but five of his last seven fights have gone the distance. ROTHWELL ON POINTS (+250) is worth a roll of the dice for a payout of two and a half times your potential return.

Over/Under (O/U)

Yes (+122): Fight to Go the Distance? is a value play based upon Rothwell’s recent history and a lack of stoppages. Rogerio de Lima also went the distance last time out.

In addition, OVER 2.5 ROUNDS (+122) has an identical price and is a better play just in case of a late finish in the third round. Why not give yourself a better chance to cash a ticket?

The UFC is back home in Las Vegas this week with a former champion at the top of the lineup.

UFC Fight Night 197 takes place Saturday at the UFC Apex in Las Vegas. The card streams on ESPN+.

(Click here to open a PDF of the staff picks grid in a separate window.)

In the main event, former featherweight champion [autotag]Max Holloway[/autotag] (22-6 MMA, 18-6 UFC) takes on [autotag]Yair Rodriguez[/autotag] (13-2 MMA, 8-1 UFC), who is fighting for the first time in more than two years. Holloway is a huge -800 favorite at Tipico; the comeback on Rodriguez is +470. Given those odds, it’s not surprising that not a single one of our 13 editors, writers, radio hosts and videographers is picking against Holloway.

In the co-feature, [autotag]Marcos Rogerio de Lima[/autotag] (18-7-1 MMA, 7-5 UFC) meets [autotag]Ben Rothwell[/autotag] (39-13 MMA, 9-7 UFC) at heavyweight. And though Rothwell only is a -165 favorite, he’s got the support of 11 of our 13 staff members.

Also on the main card, [autotag]Leah Letson[/autotag] (5-1 MMA, 1-0 UFC) takes on former Invicta champion and former UFC women’s featherweight title challenger [autotag]Felicia Spencer[/autotag] (8-3 MMA, 2-3 UFC). Spencer is a big -320 favorite, and she’s our other unanimous pick.

[autotag]Miguel Baeza[/autotag] (10-1 MMA, 3-1 UFC) may be just a -150 favorite at welterweight against [autotag]Khaos Williams[/autotag] (12-2 MMA, 3-1 UFC), but he’s got a near-unanimous picks lead at 12-1.

And to open the main card, [autotag]Song Yadong[/autotag] (17-5-1 MMA, 6-1-1 UFC) is a slim -140 favorite at featherweight against [autotag]Julio Arce[/autotag] (17-4 MMA, 4-2 UFC). Yadong has most of our backing – he’s an 11-2 pick.

In the MMA Junkie reader consensus picks, Holloway (88 percent), Rothwell (72 percent), Spencer (86 percent), Baeza (51 percent) and Yadong (81 percent) are the choices.

Today in MMA history: Affliction hosts star-studded ‘Banned’ event

Take a look back at the inaugural event of Affliction hosted 13 years ago today.

Thirteen years ago today, one of the best heavyweight fight cards in MMA went down in the U.S., but it wasn’t part of the UFC.

Back on July 19, 2008, Affliction hosted its inaugural event – Affliction: Banned, which took place at Honda Center in Anaheim, Calif. This card featured a high-profile, heavyweight matchup in the main event with the legendary [autotag]Fedor Emelianenko[/autotag] taking on former UFC champion [autotag]Tim Sylvia[/autotag]. Additionally,[autotag] Andrei Arlovski[/autotag] fought [autotag]Ben Rothwell[/autotag] and[autotag] Josh Barnett[/autotag] took on Pedro Rizzo.

The star-studded event even featured [autotag]Vitor Belfort[/autotag], [autotag]Antonio Rogerio Nogueira[/autotag], and [autotag]Gary Goodridge[/autotag] the preliminary card. That’s how stacked Affliction: Banned was.

And to counter-program the card, the UFC put its middleweight champion, Anderson Silva, to fight on a UFC Fight Night event after headlining five consecutive pay-per-view cards. Silva moved up a weight class to take on tough veteran James Irvin at UFC Fight Night 14, which aired on Spike TV.  That would be Silva’s only Fight Night performance in a decade, as he would fight again on a non-UFC pay-per-view in 2016 against Michael Bisping at UFC Fight Night 84.

Take a look back at the stacked Affliction: Banned in the video above.

Ben Rothwell down to fight Jared Vanderaa – but says he got told ‘LOL’

More than 50 fights into his MMA career, one might think Ben Rothwell would be running out of interesting fight options.

More than 50 fights into his MMA career, one might think [autotag]Ben Rothwell[/autotag] would be running out of interesting fight options.

But the Wisconsin-based heavyweight, who will turn 40 this fall, thinks he’s got a lot of potential bookings as possibilities. But there’s one in particular he’d gladly sign on for – if only the UFC’s matchmakers would get behind it.

Rothwell (39-13 MMA, 9-7 UFC) submitted Chris Barnett (21-7 MMA, 0-1 UFC) at UFC Fight Night 188. And later on the same card, [autotag]Jared Vanderaa[/autotag] (12-5 MMA, 1-1 UFC) took a unanimous decision against Justin Tafa (4-3 MMA, 1-3 UFC).

Afterward, Vanderaa said he’d like to fight Rothwell – which is music to Rothwell’s ears.

“Vanderaa did the press conference and had my name come out of his mouth and said he wants to fight me,” Rothwell recently told MMA Junkie Radio. “He said he’d fight me or (Andrei) Arlovski, but he especially would want to fight me. Well all right – I’m especially going to try to make that fight. I don’t think it’s going to happen because I got told ‘LOL.’ But I’m down.”

[lawrence-related id=613408]

The implication from Rothwell is that UFC matchmaker Mick Maynard, if an “LOL” was offered, might not find a Rothwell-Vanderaa fight competitive, given Rothwell has three times the experience.

But Rothwell said Vanderaa, and anyone else who wants a piece of his action, should stay vocal.

“If you’re going to say my name, good,” Rothwell said. “Come try to make your name off me. I don’t give a sh*t about rankings and politics. That sh*t, I can’t control it. What I can control is wrapping my hands around you and rectifying your false sense of reality. That’s what’s going to happen.

“I’m going to push to try to get the fight to happen. I don’t know what’s going to happen though, really. You know how the UFC is. They do what they want. They’ve got a master plan. But if we could get this guy to run his mouth some more and we get the fans (interested) about it and the fans start putting the pressure on the UFC, then that fight could get made. I think that’s what we need to do.”

Beyond the possibility of a Vanderaa fight, Rothwell said the fighters in the UFC’s top 10 are new matchups for him. And though he’s 3-3 in his past six fights, he’s also won three of his past four after a three-fight skid.

Rothwell isn’t in the UFC’s top 15, but there’s no one in the top 10 he’s crossed paths with yet.

“Moving forward, I think I have a whole bunch of fresh matchups that are very exciting,” he said. “Most of the top 10 is all a fresh matchup. A lot of guys that I’ve fought have moved on or retired or (been) cut, so it’s all exciting matchups here on out. And then, as more and more of these newer guys see me as an easy fight, calling me out: awesome.

“Let’s get a little more vocal, because when I ask for you, when I talk to the UFC and ask for you, they f**king laugh at me. That’s what they think of you. … I want these guys to start speaking up now, now that I’ve got this going. Keep speaking up. There are a few of them.”

Ben Rothwell: Health issues, looming roster cuts have put UFC career on the line

Ben Rothwell explains why he feels his career is on the line every time he sets foot in the octagon.

LAS VEGAS – [autotag]Ben Rothwell[/autotag] is not taking his time as a professional MMA fighter for granted.

The long-time UFC heavyweight feels his career is on the line every time he sets foot in the octagon in this stage of his career. Rothwell (39-13 MMA, 9-7 UFC) got back to his winning ways on Saturday night after submitting Chris Barnett (21-7 MMA, 0-1 UFC) at UFC Fight Night 188.

Rothwell felt he was fighting for his spot on the UFC roster and also his career in the sport. The 39-year-old said he’s at a point where he can’t afford many setbacks both in and out of the cage.

“In the sport, every fight, a bad injury right now, and so many things – my back is against the wall even with winning as far as my career goes,” Rothwell told reporters at the UFC Fight Night 188 post-fight press conference. “I wear my cross now because I bring God with me. There’s a lot of things that I can’t explain that are happening. My body is staying together. I’m finding ways to improve myself and I walk a very tight line. This sport is very dangerous. You have to stay healthy and a bad injury now, you know I’m not 30. You’re 30 and you take a bad injury and you have time to recover. I don’t have time to recover. My back is against the wall regardless of where I go.

“My back is also against the wall in the UFC. This is the biggest and best organization in the world and you have to fight like it. I have to be one of the best heavyweights in the world. I have to win fights. You don’t win fights, they bring new people in. Nothing has changed, I’ve watched it for 26 years.”

[lawrence-related id=612830,612761]

Rothwell entered Saturday’s bout coming off a unanimous decision loss to Marcin Tybura from last October. Prior to the defeat, he was on a two-fight winning streak.

The veteran fighter wants to get some big names now that he’s back on the win column and 3-1 in his past four performances. Even though Rothwell approaches his career with much care at this stage, he knows he can be a nightmare matchup for any heavyweight in the roster.

“I have some medical things I’ve been dealing with for several years. I’m sure it’s not too hard to figure out what that is, so there is a lot against me,” Rothwell said. “But here I am, still got a win, still fighting, still mean as hell. I’m hell for anybody they put in there and they know it.”

Ben Rothwell welcomes ‘Beast Boy’ Chris Barnett to the octagon at UFC Fight Night 188

Ben Rothwell will compete just a couple of weeks after having his fight scratched when he faces Chris Barnett at UFC Fight Night 188.

[autotag]Ben Rothwell[/autotag] will get to compete just a couple of weeks after having his fight scratched.

Rothwell (38-13 MMA, 8-7 UFC), who saw his UFC on ESPN 24 matchup vs. Philipe Lins fall apart just one day before his fight, will now face octagon newcomer [autotag]Chris Barnett[/autotag] (21-6 MMA, 0-0 UFC) at UFC Fight Night 188 on May 22, which takes place at the UFC Apex in Las Vegas.

Two people with knowledge of the matchup confirmed the booking to MMA Junkie on Thursday but asked to remain anonymous since the promotion has yet to make an official announcement. Fight Bananas was first to report the news.

After Rothwell successfully made weight for his featured prelim against Lins, the Brazilian never showed up to the weigh-ins and was ruled out of the fight due to illness. Rothwell took to Instagram to say that his matchup with Lins had been rebooked for UFC Fight Night 188, but sources close to MMA Junkie confirmed that Lins wasn’t ready to compete at that date. Instead, Rothwell drew Askar Mozharov, but visa issues forced the Ukrainian to withdraw and he was replaced by Barnett.

Barnett, a 27-fight veteran, never fails to entertain. “Beast Boy” was scheduled to face Brett Martin at XFC 44 on May 28, but the fight was scrapped once he got the call to the UFC. The former Island Fights heavyweight champion most recently competed in September, when he scored a first-round knockout at UAE Warriors. He has participated in boxing, kickboxing and MMA fights and will look to score a big upset over veteran Rothwell in his short-notice octagon debut.

With the addition, the UFC Fight Night 188 lineup now includes:

  • Rob Font vs. Cody Garbrandt
  • Carla Esparza vs. Yan Xiaonan
  • Justin Tafa vs. Jared Vanderaa
  • Norma Dumont vs. Felicia Spencer
  • David Dvorak vs. Raulian Paiva
  • Bill Algeo vs. Ricardo Ramos
  • Court McGee vs. Claudio Silva
  • Victor Rodriguez vs. Bruno Silva
  • Josh Culibao vs. Yilan Sha
  • Damir Hadzovic vs. Yancy Medeiros
  • Rafael Alves vs. Damir Ismagulov
  • Sarah Alpar vs. Stephanie Egger
  • Jack Hermansson vs. Edmen Shahbazyan
  • Chris Barnett vs. Ben Rothwell

Philipe Lins out of UFC on ESPN 24 fight with Ben Rothwell because of illness

The featured prelim for UFC on ESPN 24 will no longer take place Saturday.

The featured prelim for UFC on ESPN 24 will no longer take place Saturday.

[autotag]Philipe Lins[/autotag] has fallen ill and was ruled out of his heavyweight matchup with [autotag]Ben Rothwell[/autotag] prior to weigh-ins Friday at the UFC Apex in Las Vegas.

Rothwell (38-13 MMA, 8-7 UFC) successfully made weight at 264.5 pounds. Lins (14-5 MMA, 0-2 UFC) was nowhere to be found, and news later emerged that he was dealing with medical complications and would not be stepping on the scale.

UFC officials subsequently confirmed to MMA Junkie that the fight is off the card.

Rothwell issued a statement on the situation on social media (via Instagram):

https://www.instagram.com/p/COlIX5TDdVo

I made the weight , ready to go. UNFORTUNATELY my opponent has gotten ill today , and the fight has been scratched. @phillipelins I hope you are ok and can recover 🙏💪 #godspeed #ufc

UFC on ESPN 24 also lost a flyweight matchup between Ryan Benoit and Zarrukh Adashev due to a botched weight cut, and the event will now proceed with 10 bouts.
