Bellator 273 results: Sullivan Cauley slices up ‘Big Tuna’ for dominant first-round win

Ben Parrish made a big splash with a big upset in his Bellator debut. But Sullivan Cauley had other ideas about upsets at Bellator 273.

[autotag]Ben Parrish[/autotag] made a big splash with a big upset in his Bellator debut. But [autotag]Sullivan Cauley[/autotag] had other ideas about upsets Saturday at Bellator 273.

Cauley (3-0 MMA, 3-0 BMMA) took Parrish (5-2 MMA, 1-1 BMMA) down early and controlled him with relative ease on the canvas. Eventually, Cauley, a Ryan Bader protege, looked a lot like his mentor when he pounded Parrish out at the 4:35 mark of the opening round and kept Parrish from a second straight Bellator upset after his viral win over Christian Edwards in 2021.

Bellator 273 took place at Footprint Center in Phoenix.

Parrish kicked high early, but missed. When he tried again to the body a few seconds later, Cauley caught the kick and took him down. Cauley quickly moved to side control to the delight of his home fans. Cauley recovered to half-guard, but still was in trouble on his back eating punches.

Parrish threw elbows and tried to crawl his way to the fence. Parrish went after a kimura midway through the round, which slowed Cauley’s attack for a few moments. But soon after, Cauley landed big right hands that started to spill Parrish’s blood.

Cauley jumped to mount with 90 seconds left, then took Parrish’s back. Parrish scrambled his way back to guard, but couldn’t get back to his feet. Cauley started to unleash with punches and was relentless with them, and before too long, referee Mike Beltran shut things down for the first-round TKO.

‘Don’t you ever bully somebody’: Ben Parrish using newfound Bellator popularity to take a stand

“Big Tuna” is fed up and wants to put an end to bullying.

PHOENIX – “Don’t ever doubt me again. Don’t you ever bully somebody. Don’t you ever talk about somebody and think you’re better than them.”

That’s what massive underdog [autotag]Ben Parrish[/autotag] barked into the camera moments after his shocking knockout of top Bellator prospect Christian Edwards at Bellator 266 in September.

The words were passionate, but the origin wasn’t known to MMA fans, who largely knew nothing about Parrish at all. From the in-cage interview to his post-fight news conference, “Big Tuna” was fired up.

In the weeks leading up to the fight with Edwards, he received numerous messages from people he never met. The messages poked fun at his appearance. They said he’d lose – and do so badly. They said he didn’t stand a chance.

Parrish blocked out the haters and doubters. Instead of being rattled by the nastiness of complete strangers, he believed in himself, and shocked the world. In victory, he validated his fighting career, something he at times contemplated altogether.

People ask him all the time, but the answer is no. Parrish wasn’t bullied growing up. That said, his first Bellator experience showed him how nasty people can be to one another. Entering his second fight with the promotion, Saturday at Bellator 273, Parrish is an advocate for anti-bullying efforts.

“I’ve always felt that way, but it definitely reinforced it,” Parrish told MMA Junkie on Wednesday. “They were 100 percent trying to e-bully me into mentally shaking out of my fight, not realizing that it was just going to make me go harder. I don’t operate that way. I don’t get stage fright or whatever. If anything, I get more serious when I get in there.”

Growing up in Mississippi, Parrish was the youngest of 10 children in his neighborhood. Sure, the crew had plenty of fun times. But being the little guy, Parrish and his best friend (the second-youngest) grew thick skin. By the time he was in high school, no one would mess with him. They knew better than that.

Whether he was bullied or not, it doesn’t matter. As Parrish eluded to, he doesn’t need to experience intense bullying first-hand to know it’s wrong. He’s always known it was wrong. It’s bothered him. Now with a platform, Parrish has partnered with a charity organization, The Jesse Dylan James Foundation, to raise awareness.

The foundation started in honor of a 17-year-old Arkansas boy, who committed suicide after he struggled to deal with bullying at school. According to the organization’s website, its mission statement is “to educate and raise awareness about the horrific damaging effects of peer pressure, bullying, and cyber relations to help prevent teenage suicide.”

Connected through UFC featherweight contender Bryce Mitchell and their manager, Matt Weibel, of First Round Management, “Big Tuna” saw the partnership as perfect. To team up was a no-brainer.

“Try to bring awareness to this thing. Let’s put this thing to bed.” Parrish said. “I’m sick of this society we live in,” Parrish said. “They want to one-up everything, one-up everybody. You can’t even enjoy life without being in competition with somebody. Cut that sh*t out. Just enjoy life. We could be gone tomorrow.”

Maybe, Parrish will go down as a Bellator champion. Maybe, he’ll go down as a fighter, who had his one shining moment in the spotlight. Either way, Parrish finds peace in knowing he did something good outside the cage.

“Like, you never know how precious life is,” Parrish said. “This stuff, I know you see this drip that I’m wearing. It don’t mean nothing. Posting pictures of how good you look on Instagram ain’t going to last forever. The picture will last forever, but all that stuff fades away, man. What they’ll remember you for is what you stood for. This is something I stood for.”

Bellator 273 takes place Saturday at Footprint Center. The main card airs on Showtime after prelims on MMA Junkie.

Defying the odds: The 10 biggest MMA betting upsets of 2021

Check out the biggest upsets of 2021, according to the oddsmakers.

Who doesn’t love a good upset?

In 2021, MMA saw its fair share of underdogs who defied the odds – in the UFC, Bellator and beyond. While everyone has an opinion of who should win and who should lose, the oddsmakers largely get the final say on what history reflects.

This year, with the help of MMA database Tapology, MMA Junkie has compiled the top 10 betting upsets of 2021. Fights that were eligible were those which numerous major online sports books recognized, and which Tapology recorded prior to line close.

Check out the top 10 MMA betting upsets of 2021 below, per Tapology. Note that only major MMA promotions were included in the tally.

Bellator 266 salaries: Yoel Romero leads disclosed payouts despite promotional debut loss

Yoel Romero lost his Bellator debut – but was still compensated the highest amount of anyone on the card.

Bellator 266 is in the books and although [autotag]Phil Davis[/autotag] was the victorious half of the main event, he didn’t receive the highest disclosed payout according to the event’s commissioning body.

While Davis (23-6 MMA, 10-3 BMMA) pocketed a $100,000 flat salary for his three-round split decision, his opponent [autotag]Yoel Romero[/autotag] (13-6 MMA, 0-1 BMMA) earned $150,000 in defeat. The fight was Romero’s promotional debut with Bellator and his first bout since his UFC departure in 2020.

MMA Junkie acquired a full list of Bellator 266 payouts Wednesday from California State Athletic Commission (CSAC) executive director Andy Foster. The amounts include win and show purses, but do not account for any discretionary bonuses.

Bellator 266 took place Saturday at SAP Center in San Jose, Calif. The main card aired on Showtime after prelims on MMA Junkie.

‘I just lived my dream, man’: Meet Ben ‘Big Tuna’ Parrish, the unlikeliest winner of Bellator 266

A 6-to-1 underdog, Ben Parrish got some things off his chest after he was the big winner of Bellator 266 with his 38-second knockout of Christian Edwards.

SAN JOSE, Calif. – As cliche as it sounds, [autotag]Ben Parrish[/autotag] was living the dream Saturday night.

To understand why, you’d have to hear the man they call “Big Tuna” explain after his stunning 38-second knockout of rising star Christian Edwards as a 6-to-1 underdog at Bellator 266. Parrish, a native Tennessean who works for an industrial supply company, made his Bellator debut after nearly 10 years in the fight game.

When he got on the microphone during his post-fight news conference at SAP Center, Parrish had a lot to get off his chest. The father of a 6-year-old daughter, he talked about people making fun of him all the time, breaking his leg in 2019, losing relationships, friendships and jobs while pursuing MMA, and feeling like this opportunity to fight on a big stage might never come after two previous bookings with Edwards fell off.

But Parrish (5-1 MMA, 1-0 BMMA) got his opportunity, and he certainly made the most of it, and now there’s the possibility of making MMA full time.

“If I can do this, anybody can do this,” said Parrish, who mentioned that he’s the son of a mobster. “Anybody watching at home, if people try to make out like you can never hang doing this, for 10 years I’ve been hearing the same exact conversations, the same exact talks. All you gotta do is get up, walk the walk and bite down on your mouth guard. Nobody’s gonna be mad at you for losing. …

“I just lived my dream, man. What are you guys doing at home if you’re not trying to live your dream? The only thing left for me to do is win a world title. That’d be the only thing I want to do. Anything else after this means decimals to the right side of the comma.”

There might be plenty of fish in the sea, but on this night, there was only one “Big Tuna.”

6-to-1 underdog ‘Big Tuna’ knocks out top prospect Christian Edwards at Bellator 266

Check out the video of when Ben Parrish sent the SAP Center into a frenzy with a massive knockout of rising star Christian Edwards.

SAN JOSE, Calif. – “Big Tuna” was a massive underdog going into Bellator 266, but he defied the odds in a matter of seconds.

Some online sportsbooks had [autotag]Ben Parrish[/autotag] as high as a 6-to-1 underdog against rising star [autotag]Christian Edwards[/autotag]. So when Parrish (5-1 MMA, 1-0 BMMA) knocked out Edwards (5-1 MMA, 5-1 BMMA) with a series of punches 38 seconds into Round 1, the SAP Center was sent into a frenzy.

A hard overhand left started off the finishing sequence. As Edwards crumpled to the canvas, Parrish poured on a series of punches that put the lights out.

Bellator 266 lineup finalized with the addition of four more prelims

The lineup for Bellator return to its Northern California home base is set with the addition of four new fights on the preliminary card.

The lineup for next week’s Bellator return to its Northern California home base is set with the addition of four new fights on the preliminary card.

[autotag]Rhalan Gracie[/autotag] (0-2 MMA, 0-0 BMMA) will return to MMA for the first time since 2007 when he takes on [autotag]Shane Keefe[/autotag] (1-0 MMA, 0-0 BMMA) at welterweight.

Plus, [autotag]Eddie Abasolo[/autotag] (0-0 MMA, 0-0 BMMA) meets [autotag]Art Hernandez[/autotag] (4-5 MMA, 0-0 BMMA) in a 160-pound contract weight fight; [autotag]Edwin De Los Santos[/autotag] (0-0 MMA, 0-0 BMMA) takes on [autotag]Jon Adams[/autotag] (0-1-1 MMA, 0-1-1 BMMA) at flyweight; and [autotag]Jesse Delgado[/autotag] (0-0 MMA, 0-0 BMMA) fights [autotag]Joshua Dillon[/autotag] (1-1 MMA, 0-0 BMMA) in a 130-pound contract weight bout.

Bellator 266 takes place Sept. 18 at SAP Center in San Jose, Calif. The main card airs on Showtime following prelims on MMA Junkie. The card will be Bellator’s first in San Jose in more than two years.

In the main event, [autotag]Yoel Romero[/autotag] (13-5 MMA, 0-0 BMMA) finally will make his Bellator debut when he takes on former light heavyweight champion [autotag]Phil Davis[/autotag] (22-6 MMA, 9-3 BMMA).

Romero signed with Bellator in December 2020 after a seven-year run with the UFC. He was booked to make his promotional debut against Anthony Johnson to open the Bellator light heavyweight grand prix in May, but was forced to withdraw because of concerns over his eye following a pre-fight medical exam.

Romero, 44, hasn’t fought since March 2020 when he dropped a unanimous decision to UFC middleweight champion Israel Adesanya at UFC 248, which marked his third consecutive loss. His other two defeats in the skid came against Robert Whittaker and Paulo Costa. Romero hasn’t won since a February 2018 knockout of Luke Rockhold at UFC 221.

Davis is coming off an April unanimous decision loss to champion Vadim Nemkov in the Bellator light heavyweight grand prix, which snapped a three-fight winning streak.

Christian Edwards receives medical clearance for heart, canceled fight rebooked for Bellator 261

Days after his fight was canceled, Christian Edwards is back on the Bellator schedule.

With a clean bill of health, [autotag]Christian Edwards[/autotag] is ready to give his return to the cage another go.

Six days after his fight against [autotag]Ben Parrish[/autotag] was canceled after the Bellator 259 official weigh-ins, the bout is back on the books. The light heavyweight duo has been rebooked for Bellator 261, promotion officials told MMA Junkie on Wednesday.

Bellator 261 takes place June 25 at Mohegan Sun Arena in Uncasville, Conn. The main card airs on Showtime after prelims on MMA Junkie.

Edwards’ (4-0 MMA, 4-0 BMMA) removal after this past Friday’s weigh-ins came as a surprise to many, including Edwards himself. After he stepped on the scale and came in light at 202 pounds, Edwards was denied medical clearance from The Mohegan Tribe Department of Athletic Regulation due to heartbeat irregularities.

In a series of Instagram posts and stories following his removal, Edwards said the issue was a first – and likely an error. Sure enough, less than a week later, Edwards has been cleared and rebooked to fight Parrish (4-1 MMA, 0-0 BMMA).

“Like (I’ve not) done this more than once lol these doctors are funny man,” Edwards wrote on Instagram on Saturday, in response to a tweet by reporter Mike Pendleton. “Just some funny motherf*ckers bro lol.”

https://www.instagram.com/p/CPLBnABJAr5/

Edwards, 22, is a training partner of former UFC light heavyweight champion Jon Jones and one of two Mata Leon JacksonWink scholarship recipients in Bellator. He’s finished three of his four pro fights inside the distance.

With the addition, the Bellator 261 lineup includes:

  • Timothy Johnson vs. Valentin Moldavsky – for the interim heavyweight title
  • Kyra Batara vs. Lena Ovchynnikova
  • Isaiah Hokit vs. Aaron Hughes
  • Myles Jury vs. Sidney Outlaw
  • Keoni Diggs vs. Daniel Weichel
  • Christian Edwards vs. Ben Parrish

Bellator is back this week with a title fight at the top of the card.

Bellator 259 takes place Friday at Mohegan Sun Arena in Uncasville, Conn. The main card airs on Showtime following prelims on MMA Junkie.

(Click here to open a PDF of the staff picks grid in a separate window.)

In the main event, women’s featherweight champion [autotag]Cris Cyborg[/autotag] (23-2 MMA, 2-0 BMMA) puts her title on the line in a rematch with challenger [autotag]Leslie Smith[/autotag] (12-8-1 MMA, 2-2 BMMA). Cyborg is a huge favorite at -1400 at BetMGM, so it’s no surprise she’s one of three unanimous picks on the main card from our editors, writers, radio hosts and videographers.

In the co-feature, former bantamweight champ [autotag]Darrion Caldwell[/autotag] (14-4 MMA, 11-3 BMMA) takes on [autotag]Leandro Higo[/autotag] (20-5 MMA, 3-3 BMMA). Caldwell is a -350 favorite, and he’s a 12-0 unanimous pick from our staff members.

Also on the main card, [autotag]Fabian Edwards[/autotag] (9-1 MMA, 5-1 BMMA) takes on [autotag]Austin Vanderford[/autotag] (10-0 MMA, 4-0 BMMA) in a middleweight bout. Vanderford is a -225 favorite, but two of our pickers are taking Edwards in an upset.

[autotag]Maycon Mendonca[/autotag] (11-4 MMA, 0-0 BMMA) is a slight favorite at -125 in his welterweight bout against [autotag]Jaleel Willis[/autotag] (14-2 MMA, 2-0 BMMA). But it’s Willis with a big 10-2 picks lead.

Unfortunately, the bout expected to open the main card, which saw [autotag]Christian Edwards[/autotag] (4-0 MMA, 4-0 BMMA) as a big -650 favorite at light heavyweight against [autotag]Ben Parrish[/autotag] (4-1 MMA, 0-0 BMMA), was called off following the day’s official weigh-ins. Edwards was our third unanimous pick.

In the MMA Junkie reader consensus picks, Cyborg (86 percent), Caldwell (77 percent), Vanderford (70 percent), Willis (85 percent) and Christian Edwards (83 percent) are the choices.

Check out all the picks above.

Christian Edwards removed from Bellator 259; Valerie Loureda elevated to main card
