Bears 2020 training camp preview: Safeties

With Eddie Jackson sliding back over to his natural position at free safety, the Chicago Bears defense should get a big boost.

Potentially a question mark entering the offseason, the Chicago Bears quieted the doubters when they signed safety Tashaun Gipson to replace Ha Ha Clinton-Dix, who departed in free agency. Clinton-Dix was persuaded by friend and former Alabama teammate to join the Bears on a one-year, “prove-it” deal, which turned into another one-year deal with the Cowboys.

In order to accommodate Clinton-Dix, All-Pro safety Eddie Jackson slid over to strong safety, taking him away from plays on the ball. Now that Jackson is back in his natural position at free safety, the Chicago Bears defense should get a significant boost.

Let’s review what the Bears safety room looks like as a whole.

Back at free safety this season, Jackson should be more comfortable doing what he does best, which is making plays on the ball. The former fourth-round pick has quickly become one of the best safeties in the league, highlighted by an All-Pro year in 2018 where he tallied six interceptions, returning two for touchdowns.

Both of Jackson’s interceptions last year came in desperation mode for the opposition, but the Bears will be counting on him to create turnovers this year.

2020 NFL Draft: 5 safeties available for Bears on Day 2

Here are five safeties that are still on the board heading into Day 2 that Chicago should target, if they fall to them at pick 43.

The first round of the 2020 NFL Draft couldn’t have gone better for the Chicago Bears, who heading into Day 2 armed with a pair of second-rounders has plenty of first-round talent still on the board.

Heading into Round 2, there are a wealth of safety prospects — including some first-round talent — available. And considering the Bears are looking for safety Eddie Jackson’s running mate at strong safety, Chicago would do well to consider these players.

1. Xavier McKinney, Alabama

It’s hard to believe that, after Round 1, arguably the best safety prospect is still on the board heading into Day 2. While the Bears should lock him up in an instant, there’s a good chance he doesn’t fall 10 spots to Chicago at No. 43. But on the off chance he does, Xavier McKinney would bring athleticism, instincts and versatility to the safety position opposite Eddie Jackson.

According to NFL.com’s Lance Zierlein, McKinney is an “ascending safety prospect offering a combination of plus athleticism, field awareness and versatility. McKinney split time equally at slot, free safety and in the box and is accomplished in each. His coverage instincts, athleticism and quick-twitch burst are more cornerback than safety, which is why he’s likely to be a coveted toy for teams looking to upgrade and diversify their sub-packages. He can sit in center field all day if needed, and he’s an adequate open-field tackler but has room for improvement in that area. McKinney represents the new breed of versatile, matchup safety with high upside as an early starter.”

Allen Robinson has thoughts on who should join Eddie Jackson at safety in 2020

Bears WR Allen Robinson has thoughts on who should join Eddie Jackson at safety next season, and spoiler alert, it’s not Ha Ha Clinton-Dix.

If you’re someone hoping Ha Ha Clinton-Dix returns to the Bears in 2020, you’re going to want to stop reading this.

Bears receiver Allen Robinson has thoughts on who should join Eddie Jackson at safety next season, and spoiler alert, it’s not Ha Ha.

Former Chiefs safety Eric Berry has had a productive career, and he’s overcome several obstacles along the way. He overcame cancer in 2014, but then dealt with an Achille’s injury during 2017-18.

Berry didn’t play in 2019, which according to NFL Network’s Mike Garafolo was an intentional decision. Now, he plans to make a return in 2020. Which has Robinson thinking ahead, and he’d like to see the former Chief in the Bears’ secondary.

Given that Clinton-Dix is expected to test the free agent market, Robinson might’ve assumed that Clinton-Dix already has his foot out the door.

Unfortunately for Robinson, Clinton-Dix took notice of his tweet.

The Bears signed Clinton-Dix last offseason to a one-year prove-it deal worth $3 million. Clinton-Dix had a productive season for the Bears, where he had 78 tackles, two interceptions, including one for a touchdown, and five pass breakups.

Clinton-Dix is likely to draw interest in free agency, and if the Bears were to re-sign him, the price-tag would definitely be higher than $3 million they paid him in 2019.
