Bears RT Bobby Massie out several weeks with high-ankle sprain

The Bears will be without starting RT Bobby Massie for a few weeks as he deals with a high-ankle sprain.

The Chicago Bears might’ve escaped Week 12 with a 19-14 victory over the New York Giants, but they didn’t escape injury.

Aside from special teams standpoint Sherrick McManis, who suffered a groin injury, right tackle Bobby Massie suffered an ankle injury in the third quarter of Sunday’s win.

According to NFL Network Insider Ian Rapoport, Massie suffered a high-ankle sprain and is expected to be out for the next few weeks.

Massie was relieved by Cornelius Lucas in the third quarter against the Giants. While the Bears will likely activate Alex Bars come Thursday, look for Lucas to get the start in place of Massie.

The Bears have a short turnaround following Sunday’s win over the Giants as they head to Detroit for a Thanksgiving meeting against the Lions.

Bears QB Mitchell Trubisky suffered hip pointer vs. Rams

Matt Nagy told reporters Monday that Bears QB Mitchell Trubisky suffered a hip pointer vs. the Rams, and he was not benched for performance.

The story following the Chicago Bears’ deflating 17-7 loss to the Los Angeles Rams remains beleaguered quarterback Mitchell Trubisky, who was pulled from the game with Chicago down 10 points and less than four minutes left in the fourth quarter.

There was speculation that Matt Nagy benched his struggling third-year quarterback after sideline cameras captured a conversation between the two in which Trubisky appeared to be on the verge of tears. It looked more like a coach benching his quarterback for performance rather than injury.

Although Trubisky was far from the problem on Chicago’s offense — dropped passes, receivers stopping running routes and questionable pass protection led the way.

Nagy has since confirmed that Trubisky suffered a hip pointer against the Rams on the final drive of the first half. Trubisky received treatment for the injury at halftime, and while it looked like he was fine to start the third quarter — leading the Bears on an 80-yard touchdown drive — it wasn’t something he was able to overcome down the stretch.

“What ended up happening over time with him was it became stiff and tighter and tighter,” Nagy said Monday, via NFL.com. “We ended up keeping an eye on it and noticing that we wanted to be careful of it affecting his play. … I knew he had a hip deal, but it wasn’t significant to not play. But over time the stiffness got to a point to where he really wasn’t even able to sit on the bench. That’s when I became aware of it and we kept an eye on him for a series and a half.”

That was when Nagy pulled Trubisky from the game. Nagy said the move was for health reasons in order to “protect him from himself” and had “zero to do with his play.”

“The thing that you love about Mitch is that he’s extremely tough,” Nagy said. “I love that about him. But at the same time, he’s at a point where you could see that it was painful. What I had to do was, I wanted him to know coming from me that he needs to be brutally honest with me in regards to his pain and where he’s at. That’s exactly what it was.”

Whether Trubisky will be healthy enough to go Sunday against the New York Giants remains to be seen. But Nagy said it’s something they’re “working through” and if he’s healthy, he’s “absolutely” the starter.

Matt Nagy offers no official update on Danny Trevathan’s injury, but IR likely option

Matt Nagy didn’t have an update on Bears LB Danny Trevathan’s elbow injury, but injured reserve is likely a forgone conclusion.

When Chicago Bears linebacker Danny Trevathan exited Sunday’s game against the Detroit Lions in the first quarter, it was safe to assume that he wouldn’t be returning anytime soon.

Not after suffering a gruesome elbow injury, where Trevathan’s arm was bent awkwardly as he brought down Lions quarterback Jeff Driskel.

While Trevathan had an MRI done Monday, Bears coach Matt Nagy offered no official update of Trevathan’s injury during his Monday press conference. But he didn’t sound optimistic.

“Yeah. It’ not real pretty,” Nagy said, via NBC Sports Chicago. “But it’s a part of this game. You hate to see that, so we’ll see how that goes moving forward.”

Nagy wouldn’t rule out placing Trevathan on injured reserve. Though, to be fair, Nagy said during his post game press conference that they wouldn’t know anything for a “few days.” But injured reserve feels like a foregone conclusion at this point given the gruesome look at Trevathan’s elbow injury.

“It could be,” Nagy admitted. “Again, we’ll know more here in the next couple of days, but we’ll see where it goes as far as weeks are concerned.”

With the impending loss of Trevathan, that leaves the Bears down two defensive leaders. Defensive tackle Akiem Hicks, who sustained a dislocated elbow in Week 5, was placed on injured reserve shortly after and is eligible to return in Week 15 against the Green Bay Packers.

“They’re two of the more vocal guys on that side of the ball,” Nagy said. “When you lose a guy like Danny in the middle, that leadership part, you lose a little bit…

“It’s hard, just because there is so much between the two. Just their personalities in general – they’re both a little bit different, with how they handle their personalities. But they’re very similar on the field, leadership-wise. As we move forward here, we’ll have guys that are always ready and prepared and the coaches will have them the same way.”

Bears LB Nick Kwiatkoski steps up in place of injured LB Danny Trevathan

The Bears lost starting LB Danny Trevathan to a gruesome elbow injury, but reserve LB Nick Kwiatkoski stepped up in his absence.

When Bears linebacker Danny Trevathan suffered a gruesome elbow injury, backup Nick Kwiatkoski rose to the occasion in his place in Chicago’s 20-13 victory over the Lions.

Trevathan left the game in the first quarter after his arm bent the wrong way as he attempted to sack Lions quarterback Jeff Driskel. Trevathan immediately left the field, knowing that something was wrong.

While Bears coach Matt Nagy didn’t offer an update on Trevathan’s injury, it appeared to be similar to defensive tackle Akiem Hick’s elbow dislocation, perhaps worse.

Kwiatkoski relieved Trevathan with one of the best games of his career. He finished second in tackles with 9, recorded a sack and had the Bears’ lone takeaway — an interception of Driskel early in the third quarter, which led to a Bears scoring drive.

Kwiakoski once again proved to not only be an adamant fill-in but a productive one, just like he did earlier this season in place of linebacker Roquan Smith, who was a healthy scratch against the Minnesota Vikings.

‘‘It’s just preparation,’’ he said, via the Sun-Times. ‘‘As a linebacker, you plan on playing. Things happen throughout the course of a season, and you have to be ready for it.’’

Trevathan looks to be out awhile with his elbow injury, and Kwiatkoski suddenly has a big opportunity in front of him.

‘‘It’s not the way I want it to happen,” Kwiatkoski said. “Danny’s a close friend of mine.’’

But Kwiatkoski will get his chance this week as the Bears travel to Los Angeles to play the Rams on Sunday Night Football.
