Former Notre Dame Receiver Transfers to Cincinnati

Michael Young will have two years of eligibility remaining when he starts play with the Cincinnati Bearcats football team this fall.

Graduate transfer Michael Young has officially left the Notre Dame football program and found a new home at Brian Kelly’s previous stop, Cincinnati.

Young announced the decision on Easter Sunday and will have two years of eligibility remaining for Luke Fickell and the Cincinnati Bearcats.

Part of the selling point to Young was that the man that recruited him to Notre Dame is now the Bearcats offensive coordinator, Mike Denbrock.  Young said of Denbrock to 247Sports:

Also, can’t forget to mention the connection that I had with coach Mike Denbrock. From recruiting me to Notre Dame, to now being my offensive coordinator at Cincinnati, it means everything. The relationship we’ve built from high school up until now played a significant factor in my decision.”

In three seasons at Notre Dame, the former top-50 receiver nationally as a recruit played in 27 games and pulled down 17 receptions for 177 yards and two touchdowns.

Cincinnati TE Josiah Deguara considers Chiefs TE Travis Kelce a role model

Josiah Deguara has looked up to former Cincinnati Bearcat TE Travis Kelce throughout his NFL career with the Kansas City Chiefs.

The tight end position was on full display during Super Bowl LIV with two of the best in the NFL going head-to-head in Travis Kelce and George Kittle. The ever-growing importance of the position in NFL offenses makes it one of the more intriguing groups of players each year at the combine.

You’ll find Cincinnati TE Josiah Deguara among the more intriguing athletes in this class because he’s done a bit of everything in college football. Deguara believes his skill set fits in with the evolution of the position in the NFL.

“I think I fit in pretty well,” Deguara told Chiefs Wire. “My biggest strength is my versatility whether it is playing a traditional tight end or maybe a little fullback. Teams like what I can do in that scenario too. So being able to do a lot of different things on the field, it’s definitely something that I can use to my advantage. It’s cool to see how far the [tight end position] has come in the NFL.”

Deguara took an interesting road to become Cincinnati Bearcat. He was not highly recruited coming out of Folsom High School in California. He was connected with former Bearcats OL coach Darren Hiller through a family friend and with just under two weeks to go before signing day, Deguara received an offer. With the next step in his journey just ahead, Deguara has leaned on a former Cincinnati player as an example and role model. That player is Chiefs TE Travis Kelce.

“With Travis Kelce just being at Cincinnati, he’s a huge role model for me,” Deguara said. “He’s someone that I try to model my game after. We’re from the same school so he knows what it’s like to be a bearcat from Cincinnati. So being able to reach out to him — and I’ve talked to him a few times —he’s a huge example for me. It’s awesome to see him in the league — being probably the best tight end in the league right now. To be able to look up to him and talk to him is awesome.”

Kelce, now a seasoned NFL veteran, offered Deguara some valuable advice during his career at Cincinnati. He even offered him some guidance in the process that lies ahead at the NFL combine and in the 2020 NFL Draft.

“He’s pretty much just encouraged me throughout this whole process,” Deguara said of Kelce. “Don’t listen to all the outside noise and control what you can control. Put my head down and whatever happens — happens. I can’t control where I go or when I go. I can just do everything to the best of my ability and let the rest handle itself.”

Chiefs fans could see Deguara line up beside Kelce come the 2020 season. Chiefs TE coach Tom Melvin met with Deguara informally earlier in the week and their meeting went well.

“I spoke to the Chiefs a little bit,” Deguara said. “They obviously use the tight end a lot, so it’s an offense that I would love to play for. The tight end coach [Tom Melvin] was awesome to speak to.”

Whether Deguara ends up in Kansas City, the advice that Kelce passed along to him will help him make an impact during the next phase of his football career.

UC Bearcats DC Marcus Freeman reportedly turned down offer from Titans

MMQB’s Albert Breer reported the news first via Twitter on Tuesday afternoon.

The Tennessee Titans’ search for a new linebackers coach continues after the team’s offer to Cincinnati Bearcats defensive coordinator Marcus Freeman was turned down.

Freeman would have been the replacement for Tyrone McKenzie, who came to the mutual decision to part ways with the team earlier this month to join Matt Patricia and the Detroit Lions.

MMQB’s Albert Breer reported the news first via Twitter on Tuesday afternoon.

The 34-year-old has been with the Bearcats since 2016, joining the staff just days after Luke Fickell was named to the head-coaching position.

Freeman also coached at Purdue, Kent State and Ohio State, where he too the field for then-Buckeyes assistant Fickell from 2004-08.

The Titans certainly have some voids to fill as the offseason continues, but have already addressed some.

Former Houston Texans secondary coach Anthony Midget replaced Kerry Coombs last month, leaving Tennessee potentially on the hunt for a new defensive coordinator and someone to take McKenzie’s place.

The former may come from within, as multiple reports of coach Mike Vrabel having a heavier hand in the defense this year have emerged since Dean Pees’ departure.

Tennessee at Cincinnati odds, picks and best bets

Previewing Wednesday’s Tennessee Volunteers at Cincinnati Bearcats betting odds and lines, with NCAA basketball betting picks and bets.

The Tennessee Volunteers (7-2, 0-0 SEC) and the Cincinnati Bearcats (6-4, 0-0 AAC) square off Wednesday at 7 p.m. ET at Fifth Third Arena. We analyze the Tennessee-Cincinnati odds and betting lines, while providing college basketball betting tips and advice on this matchup.

Tennessee at Cincinnati: Three things you need to know

1. The Bearcats are looking to bounce back after a stunning 67-66 loss at home to Colgate. G Jarron Cumberland fired up a 3-pointer with about five seconds left, as Colgate came down with it and ended up at the free-throw line to win it.

2. The Volunteers are coming off a 51-47 loss against Memphis last time out. That’s the bad news. The good news is the defense hasn’t allowed 70 or more points all season.

3. Both teams are a disaster against the number, as the Vols are 1-4 against the spread in the past five overall and 2-5 ATS in the past seven on the road, while the Bearcats are 8-23 ATS in the past 31 overall dating back to last season.

Prediction

Tennessee 69, Cincinnati 55

Moneyline (ML)

TENNESSEE (-125) is worth a considerable bet on the road, as the ranked Volunteers face a Cincinnati (+105) side that can’t seem to get out of its own way lately.

A $10 bet on the Vols to win outright would return a profit of $8.

Against the Spread (ATS)

TENNESSEE (-1.5, -110) is expected to win, and all it has to do is win by a bucket to cover. The Volunteers are a better value against the spread. While they have struggled on the road against the number, the Bearcats (+1.5, -110) are coming off a home loss to Colgate, they have dropped two in a row, and they have won just once in regulation over their past four home games. They’re not playing good ball right now.

Over/Under (O/U)

UNDER 129.5 (-106) is worth a small-unit play, although confidence is not high. Tennessee’s defense has been strong this season, however, and that’s not what Cincinnati needs as it looks to bounce back.
