Baylor vs Kansas Game Preview

Why Baylor Will Win

There’s the Baylor we’re all used to.

After the stunning problem with Alabama in an 87-78 loss last Saturday, it bounced back with a nice offensive performance to get by West Virginia to potentially get back on track.

Sort of.

It didn’t shoot the lights out and the defense struggled – more on that in a moment – but it was still pulled off the win by attacking the rim and dominating on the offensive glass.

It was great on the offensive boards against Alabama and it didn’t matter enough, but it came up with a whopping 17 against West Virginia. It might not own the glass against Kansas, but it should be able to come up with just enough to hang around, but …

Why Kansas Will Win

What happened to the Baylor defense?

Overall it’s good at forcing mistakes, it’s able to come up with a few blocks here and there, and it’s usually able to overcome problems with a whole lot of scoring, but Alabama and West Virginia were both able to hit everything from the field.

The Bears got away with having problems against the Mountaineers, but that’s not going to work against Kansas.

How did the Jayhawks get back on track after getting rocked by Kentucky? It had one of its best shooting days of the year by pounding away on the inside and getting back to rebounding everything defensively.

Top 25 Game Previews, Predictions

What’s Going To Happen

Kansas will be too good from the field.

Baylor might have the playmakers who’ll keep attacking, and it can hang around this by being great on the boards, but Kansas lost to Kentucky with its worst shooting and worst overall rebounding game of the season. It might struggle a bit on the boards, but it’s not going to have issues from the field.

This should be a fun offensive show, both teams will be happy to get up and down the floor, and Kansas doesn’t lose when it scores.

The Jayhawks are 14-0 when they score 74 or more. They’re not a lock to get there – the Alabama loss was a total aberration for Baylor – but they will.

Baylor (2-0) vs Kansas (1-1) Game Preview

Why Baylor Will Win

Baylor seems like it’s just a few more at-bats away from figuring it all out.

Second year head coach Dave Aranda is getting the defense working – even if the competition hasn’t exactly been stiff so far – and there’s experience talent at the skill spots to work around.

And there’s speed. That should be enough against the Jayhawks.

Kansas has had a rough time getting the defense off the field, and it’s having a harder time keeping teams from blocking kicks – three in the first two games.

There’s not enough pressure coming from the defensive front, and the offensive line isn’t doing much in pass protection. If Baylor gets up early and then gets to rely on the defense, there won’t be any problems. The O hasn’t been turning it over enough to worry.

Week 3 College Football Expert Picks

Why Kansas Will Win

Don’t get all fired up over Baylor rolling through Texas Southern 66-7.

This is still a team that needed way too much work to get by Texas State to start the season, it’s still in a bit of a transition overall, and as weird as it sounds, Kansas is a step up in competition.

The Jayhawks are going to need a while, but they’ve started to find a few things that work.

Struggling against South Dakota wasn’t awe-inspiring, but the passing game wasn’t bad in the loss to Coastal Carolina, North Texas transfer QB Jason Bean appears to be a guy to work around for the next few years, and there’s at least some big play potential to the running game now.

Not a lot, but some. That’s a start.

Week 3 College Football Schedule, Predictions, Game Previews

What’s Going To Happen

Kansas is going to give Baylor a far tougher time than it might like.

There will be a third quarter offensive spurt from the Bears to take over, but after rolling for over 700 yards last week, the BU offense will sputter a bit for far too long.

Kansas, though, won’t have the offense to take advantage of the several opportunities to make this a battle, and then the floodgates will open.

Why Baylor Will Win

The Bears were wayyyyyyyy shaky against a bad Iowa State team, but a 21-day layoff had something to do with it. When it had to turn it on, it did in the 77-72 win.

Just assume the warmup is out of the way now.

When this thing is working, the offense is the best in college basketball – with some due respect to Gonzaga, but it doesn’t have to play in the Big 12 – with three after three after three. That was the problem against the Cyclones – it was one of the few times the Bears didn’t hit nine or more from three this year.

Kansas is fine at guarding the three and is playing well overall, but it also has a big problem turning the ball over. It’s usually able to get aways with it, but it gave it up 15 times against Baylor the first time around back in January.

But …

Why Kansas Will Win

It’s possible that Baylor really isn’t quite back yet and the Iowa State game was more than just a case of trying to shake off the rust.

No one in the Big 12 has made more threes, no one in the conference moves the ball as well, and as always, the rebounding is fantastic. For all of the amazing things Baylor does, it doesn’t get on the defensive boards as well as it needs to at times.

The Bears have the offense to make up for the problems, but if the Jayhawks get on the offensive glass – they’ve done it ten times or more five times in the last eight games – they’ve got this.

What’s Going To Happen

Baylor will start to look the part again.

As mediocre as it played against a bad Iowa State team, it wasn’t all that great in the first meeting, too. The offense will get going again from the outside in a gut-check game with a lot of energy and a ton of fun.

Kansas will lose, but it’ll look like a team that can make a whole bunch of noise when this really matters.

Baylor (10-1) vs. Kansas (3-8) Game Preview

Why Baylor Will Win

It has to keep on pushing.

The Bears got past the painful loss to Oklahoma with a terrific performance against Texas to earn a spot in the Big 12 Championship, and now it’s time to keep the dream alive.

It’s going to take a whole slew of breaks to get through the traffic to have a real shot at the College Football Playoff, but beat Kansas, beat OU, beat 12-1 with a Big 12 title, and the Bears will be knocking on the door.

They’re not turning the ball over enough to be a problem, the pass rush continues to be a terror, and the defense is holding teams to under 20 points per game.

Kansas doesn’t take the ball away – just seven forced turnovers on the year – there’s no pass rush to worry about, and the defense is non-existent on third downs.

It’s going to take a perfect game from Kansas to pull this off, and it’s not capable of being that sharp. However …

“Go to the bank!” Today’s top pick of the day just released

Why Kansas Will Win

This is the Jayhawks’ bowl game.

It’s the final game of the year, it’s at home, and it’s a chance to ruin Baylor’s dream with a shocking win. This would be the type of victory to build off of all offseason.

No, the Jayhawks just aren’t tight enough to get through this by winning the mistake battle, but they’ve got the ability to bomb away and make this scary.

Carter Stanley hit Iowa State for 328 yards and three scores – and he didn’t throw any picks – and has gone over 300 yards in three of the last five games. The Baylor secondary has been terrific, but it has given up 200 yards or more in six of its last eight games.

The pressure is all on the other side. At home, if Stanley and the offense can get hot early and make the Bears press, this should be a decent battle. The Jayhawks are going to empty the bag – and any other cliché you might want to use – and Baylor has a way of playing up or down to the competition.

But …

What’s Going To Happen

Baylor is used to playing in close games.

The Oklahoma game was an aberration – the Bears uncharacteristically melted down.

This is still the team that came through when things got tight against Texas Tech, West Virginia, TCU, Iowa State, and on the road at Oklahoma State before pulling away late.

Kansas will make this way too interesting for Baylor’s liking for three quarters, but slow and steady will win the race. Baylor won’t stall in key fourth down moments, and Kansas will.
