Baylor at West Virginia picks and predictions

Prediction

West Virginia 76, Baylor 73

Moneyline

PASS.

I would prefer to play the spread here, as the moneyline odds do not present as much return on value for the home side that I think emerges with the win.

Against the spread

BET WEST VIRGINIA -1.5 (-110).

West Virginia is 7-1 at home and none of those victories have come by just a single point. Its only home loss was against a tough Kansas team last time out.

Baylor has not played well in either of its 2 true road games, losing both by an average margin of 20.5 points despite being the favorite in each.

Over/Under

LEAN OVER 147.5 (-110).

With Baylor’s offense averaging more than 80 PPG and West Virginia’s averaging more than 78 PPG — both teams clearly like to push the pace. Both defenses rank poorly in scoring defense with the Bears allowing 69.8 PPG (207th) and the Mountaineers allowing 68.0 PPG (t-152nd).

Baylor at West Virginia odds, picks and predictions

Analyzing Thursday’s Baylor at West Virginia odds and lines, with college football expert picks, predictions and best bets.

The Baylor Bears (3-2, 1-1 Big 12) and the West Virginia Mountaineers (2-3, 0-2) meet in a conference game Thursday at Milan Puskar Stadium in Morgantown. Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m. ET (FS1). Below, we analyze Tipico Sportsbook‘s lines around the Baylor vs. West Virginia odds, and make our expert college football picks and predictions.

The Bears are looking to rebound after a 36-25 setback against Oklahoma State at home last weekend. Baylor failed to cover against the Cowboys, but it hasn’t had consecutive non-covers since Nov. 14-28, 2020.

The Mountaineers were humbled at Texas last time out on Oct. 1, falling 38-20. They have lost both games inside the conference and fell 55-42 at home to Kansas in OT on Sept. 10. It is 2-1 SU/3-0 ATS in non-conference games, and 0-2 SU/ATS inside the Big 12.

Baylor is No. 23 in the AFCA Coaches Poll powered by USA TODAY Sports.

Baylor at West Virginia picks and predictions

Prediction

Baylor 33, West Virginia 27

Moneyline

BAYLOR (-165) is a moderate favorite, but it isn’t a bad play if you simply want to pick a winner and not worry about the points. Three and a hook can be a scary number, especially on the road.

Against the spread

BAYLOR -3.5 (-105) is worth playing lightly in this road game. It has posted covers in 4 of its last 5 games on the road and is 13-5 ATS in its last 18 games overall. The Bears are also an impressive 20-4-2 ATS in the past 26 games following a non-cover, too.

West Virginia has failed to cover in 5 of the past 6 games inside the conference, although the home team is 4-1 ATS in the past 5 meetings in this series. Go lightly.

Over/Under

OVER 54.5 (-110) is the lean and worth playing a half-unit or more. Baylor’s offense is strong, registering 37.4 PPG to rank 26th in the nation. But the defense is 37th overall, yielding just 20.6 PPG.

West Virginia is in a similar boat offensively, scoring 38.2 PPG, but it allows 29.6 PPG. This won’t be a track meet, but it also won’t be confused with a defensive masterpiece, either.

Baylor at West Virginia odds, picks and prediction

Analyzing Tuesday’s Baylor at West Virginia odds and lines, with college basketball expert picks, predictions and best bets.

The No. 6 Baylor Bears (15-2, 3-2 Big 12) visit the West Virginia Mountaineers (13-3, 2-2) Tuesday at WVU Coliseum for a 5 p.m. ET tip-off. Below, we look at Baylor vs. West Virginia odds and lines, and make our expert college basketball picks, predictions and bets.

Baylor has dropped to No. 6 after holding the top spot for a few weeks following consecutive home losses to conference foes Texas Tech and Oklahoma State. The Bears are led by James Akinjo, a senior guard who transferred from Arizona.

West Virginia did receive some votes to break into the top 25 although it remains on the outside looking in. The Mountaineers are coming off a 26-point road loss to Kansas, but they have recently defeated Oklahoma State — one of the two teams that defeated Baylor. West Virginia is led by junior guard Taz Sherman.

Baylor at West Virginia odds, lines, picks and predictions

Prediction

Baylor 72, West Virginia 68

Money line

PASS on the money line.

I like Baylor to win but I’ll pass on their money line odds at -270 in a road game and on a two-game losing skid. Similarly, WVU’s last performance was far from convincing, so betting an upset at +210 isn’t wise either.

Against the spread

BET on WEST VIRGINIA +6.5 (-120).

While its most recent showing was pitiful, it was on the road against the best team in the conference.

West Virginia’s premier struggles come in defending big men as they only consistently play one player over 6-foot-7 — 6’10” F Isaiah Cottrell — and even he only averages 16.5 minutes per game.

Baylor, while gritty on the defensive side, is similar in the fact that they’re primarily guard-led. This will be a battle of star backcourts, and I’ll take the Mountaineers and the better scorer — Sherman — to cover.

Over/Under

“LEAN” to the OVER 138.5 (-110).

The Bears rank first in the conference in three-point field goal percentage and three-point field goals made. They like to get out and shoot early and often and they’re 9-7-1 O/U this season.

The Mountaineers star-studded backcourt with two premier sharpshooters will more than likely also be letting it fly. WVU is 3-1 O/U in conference games.

Baylor is No. 3 in the Ferris Mowers Coaches Poll powered by USA TODAY Sports. West Virginia is ranked fifth.

  • Against the spread/ATS: Baylor -4.5 (-105) | West Virginia +4.5 (-115)
  • Over/Under: 149.5 (O: -110 | U: -110)

Baylor at West Virginia: Three things to know

  1. Looking to rebound from their first loss of the season, the visiting Bears will have to contend with a surging West Virginia five that has won three in a row. The Mountaineers are 6-1 since Feb. 1, and their lone loss in that span is a 91-90 double-overtime loss against No. 15 Oklahoma.
  2. Baylor logged a three-week hiatus due to COVID-19 protocols and returned to action with a shaky performance in a win over Iowa State Feb. 23. The Bears followed that up with a 71-58 loss at No. 14 Kansas Saturday. Baylor — which averaged 86.4 points and led the nation with a 43.2% mark from 3-point range during a school-record 18-0 start — set season lows for points and field-goal percentage (34.8%) against the Jayhawks.
  3. Baylor G Jared Butler is averaging 16.4 points and 4.9 rebounds this season, but the junior talent was held to just five points on Saturday. Butler scored 21 in each of the two meetings with West Virginia last season; the Big-12 foes, split, with each side winning at home.

Against the spread (ATS)

The Bears are 12-3 ATS in their last 15 road games against teams boasting home winning percentages greater than .600. Look for the Bears to find success inside on both first- and second-look buckets. And peg Baylor as having the perimeter defense to hold WVU at bay.

BACK THE BEARS -4.5 (-105).

Over/Under (O/U)

The Over is 6-1 in the Bears’ last seven games. The Over is 5-1 in the Mountaineers’ last six home games.

Look for BU’s shooting to be more on target in this third game back off a layoff. After a loss in a slow-pace game against Kansas, the mid-tempo Bears likely join the faster-pace Mountaineers in a game that travels into the mid-150s. TAKE THE OVER 149.5 (-110).
