Broncos place Baron Browning on IR, ruling him out at least 4 games

The Broncos have placed OLB Baron Browning on injured reserve, ruling him out for at least four games.

Denver Broncos outside linebacker Baron Browning has been placed on injured reserve, the team announced Saturday. Browning now has to sit out at least four games before becoming eligible to return.

Browning (6-3, 240 pounds) injured his foot against the Pittsburgh Steelers on Sunday. He played 12 snaps before leaving the game and did not record any stats. Two weeks ago, Browning totaled five tackles (including one behind the line of scrimmage) against the Seattle Seahawks.

Browning was picked by the Broncos in the third round of the 2021 NFL draft out of Ohio State. He missed three games due to injuries in each of his first two seasons and then missed seven games last fall. Browning had set a goal of playing a full 17-game season ahead of the 2024 campaign, a goal that has now hit a roadblock.

The 25-year-old pass rusher has totaled 112 tackles, 22 quarterback hits, 9.5 sacks and one interception in 40 games (28 starts) in Denver.

Browning started the Broncos’ first two games across from Jonathon Cooper. Denver’s top backup pass rushers are rookie Jonah Elliss and Nik Bonitto. Ellis totaled three tackles and one sack against Pittsburgh.

Broncos injury news: Baron Browning ruled out for Week 3

Broncos OLB Baron Browning (foot) and DB JL Skinner (ankle) have been ruled out for Sunday’s game against the Buccaneers.

The Denver Broncos have ruled out outside linebacker Baron Browning (foot) for Sunday’s game against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers after he missed all three days of practice this week.

Jonah Elliss and Nik Bonitto are the next men up at pass rusher following Browning’s injury. One of them will start across from Jonathon Cooper in Week 3, and Dondrea Tillman was promoted from the practice squad to the active roster this week to provide more depth at the position.

Elsewhere on the injury front, safety JL Skinner (ankle) has also been ruled out. Keidron Smith could be the next man up to replace Skinner on special teams.

Meanwhile, safety Brandon Jones (foot) and defensive lineman John Franklin-Myers (concussion) have been cleared to play.

Broncos injuries: Baron Browning trending toward not playing

Broncos OLB Baron Browning (foot) missed practice again on Thursday, putting his status in doubt for Sunday’s game against the Bucs.

Denver Broncos outside linebacker Baron Browning (foot) did not practice again on Thursday after previously missing Wednesday’s session. The 25-year-old pass rusher appears to be trending toward not playing against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in Week 3.

Denver added more depth at outside linebacker this week by promoting Dondrea Tillman to the active roster and signing Andrew Farmer to the practice squad, perhaps early signs that Browning’s status was in doubt.

Elsewhere on the injury front, safety JL Skinner (ankle) was also held out Thursday while safety Brandon Jones (foot) and defensive lineman John Franklin-Myers (concussion) returned on a limited basis.

Recapping the 3 roster moves Broncos made Wednesday

The Broncos placed Mike McGlinchey on IR, promoted Dondrea Tillman to the 53-man roster and signed Andrew Farmer to the practice squad.

The Denver Broncos made three roster moves on Wednesday ahead of Sunday’s road game against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

First, the Broncos placed right tackle Mike McGlinchey (knee) on injured reserve, ruling him out for at least four games. Alex Palczewski is the next man up to fill in while McGlinchey is sidelined.

Second, Denver promoted outside linebacker Dondrea Tillman from the practice squad to the 53-man roster. Tillman was likely elevated to provide depth while Baron Browning nurses a foot injury.

Third, the Broncos signed pass rusher Andrew Farmer to the practice squad to fill the spot vacated after Tillman’s promotion.

Broncos injuries: Baron Browning did not practice Wednesday

Broncos OLB Baron Browning (foot) did not practice Wednesday, and the team added depth at his position this week.

Denver Broncos outside linebacker Baron Browning (foot) was among four players held out of Wednesday’s practice.

Also sidelined were safety Brandon Jones (foot), defensive lineman John Franklin-Myers (concussion) and safety JL Skinner (ankle).

Franklin-Myers has a “50-50” chance of playing against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers this week after suffering a “mild concussion” in Week 2, according to the Denver Gazette‘s Chris Tomasson. Eyioma Uwazurike is listed behind JFM on the depth chart, but Jordan Jackson and Malcolm Roach would be more likely candidates to fill in if needed.

The Broncos promoted outside linebacker Dondrea Tillman to the active roster and signed Andrew Farmer to the practice squad on Wednesday, moves that might signal Browning’s status for Week 3 is in doubt.

Broncos cut pass rusher from injured reserve

The Broncos have waived OLB Ronnie Perkins from injured reserve.

The Denver Broncos have waived pass rusher Ronnie Perkins from injured reserve, via KUSA-TV’s Mike Klis.

Perkins (6-3, 253 pounds) was initially waived by the Broncos with an injury designation in August. After clearing waivers, he reverted to the team’s IR list. Denver has now reached an injury settlement with Perkins and he will be waived from IR to become a free agent.

The NFL’s transaction wire also listed Andrew Farmer as having visited the Broncos on Tuesday. Farmer is set to sign with the team’s practice squad, but that move will not become official until Wednesday.

The fact that Denver is bringing in Farmer to provide depth at outside linebacker might not be a good sign for the status of Baron Browning, who suffered a foot injury against the Pittsburgh Steelers on Sunday. We’ll find out more about Browning’s status following Wednesday’s practice when the Broncos release their first injury report of the week.

Riley Moss was this close to getting the ball back for Broncos in Week 1

Riley Moss was *this close* to breaking up the third-down pass that clinched the game on Sunday.

After quarterback Bo Nix rushed for a four-yard touchdown on Sunday, the Denver Broncos trailed the Seattle Seahawks by six points with just over two left in the game.

With a pair of timeouts and the two-minute warning still remaining, the Broncos decided to kick it deep to Seattle instead of attempting an onside kick. The decision nearly paid off.

After two plays, the Seahawks faced a 3rd-and-11 from their own 29-yard line. Seahawks quarterback Geno Smith connected with tight end Noah Fant on a nine-yard completion that was short of the first down marker.

That would have given the Broncos an opportunity to get the ball back, but pass rusher Baron Browning was penalized for lining up offside. That five-yard penalty turned a 3rd-and-11 into a 3rd-and-6 and Seattle got another chance to convert.

This time, Smith connected with wide receiver Tyler Lockett on a nine-yard completion to pick up a first down and seal a 26-20 win.

Denver cornerback Riley Moss came very close to breaking it up:

“[W]e competed,” Nix said after the game. “We went down there and scored at the end and gave ourselves a chance to win. We were an inch away on an almost batted ball that Riley Moss made an incredible play on that they just made a better play. It’s tough. You’ve got to give them credit, but we battled and we continued to fight.”

Browning and Moss will regret those final two plays that demonstrated how football truly is a game of inches. Denver’s defense will look to bounce back when the Pittsburgh Steelers come to town in Week 2.

Broncos OLB Baron Browning hoping for first healthy season of his career

Baron Browning’s goal for 2024: Play a complete 17-game season for the first time in his career.

Since being picked by the Denver Broncos in the third round of the 2021 NFL draft out of Ohio State, outside linebacker Baron Browning has missed 13 games due to injuries, and he has never played a full 17-game season.

The talent is there for Browning to emerge as a top pass rusher, but he needs to stay on the field, and he knows it.

“For me, [my goal is] just to play 17 games this year,” Browning said in July. “That’s my main focus. Just to be available for my teammates and just do whatever I can do to help us win games.

“And just as an edge, to just be disruptive. I think the outside linebackers play a very pivotal role in this defense. We’re just trying to be the leaders of the defense and make plays. Every day we break it down on playmakers, so that’s our mindset and we’re believing in it.”

Browning totaled 4.5 sacks in 10 appearances last fall.

“It’s an important position in this defense,” Broncos coach Sean Payton said of the team’s outside linebacker spot. “It’s the defensive ends in the 4-3. So you’re looking for guys that are physical enough to set an edge in the run game and yet give you pash rush and convert when it’s a passing situation. Obviously, it’s a real important position for what we do defensively.”

Two years ago, Browning totaled five sacks 14 games. He has 21 quarterback hits over the last two years and 12 tackles behind the line of scrimmage. If he can stay healthy this fall, perhaps Browning can approach the first double-digit sack total of his career ahead of free agency in 2025.

Broncos rolling with 4 pass rushers on initial 53-man roster

After parting with Dondrea Tillman, Thomas Incoom and Durell Nchami, the Broncos have Browning, Cooper, Elliss and Bonitto at OLB.

The Denver Broncos are rolling with four pass rushers on their initial 53-man roster for the 2024 NFL season.

After waiving Dondrea Tillman and Thomas Incoom on Tuesday and moving Durell Nchami to injured reserve, the Broncos are left with Baron Browning, Jonathon Cooper, Jonah Elliss and Nik Bonitto at outside linebacker.

Tillman and Incoom will presumably be priority targets for Denver’s practice squad if they clear waivers. Nchami could potentially reach an injury settlement and return later, or the Broncos could put him on short-term IR with the possibility of returning after four games.

To begin the season, though, Denver is rolling with Browning, Cooper, Elliss and Bonitto. The Broncos could also look to the waiver wire to add depth, but that’s the quartet of pass rushers at the moment.

Denver needs to finalize an initial 53-man roster by 2 p.m. MT today. We are tracking all of the team’s roster moves on Broncos Wire.

Broncos roster series: No. 5, OLB Baron Browning

Entering a contract year, Broncos pass rusher Baron Browning will aim to top his career high of five sacks this fall.

Broncos Wire’s 90-man offseason roster series continues today with a look at fourth-year outside linebacker Baron Browning, No. 5.

Before the Broncos: Browning (6-3, 240 pounds) started his college career at Ohio State as an inside linebacker. His best season came as a junior in 2019, totaling 43 tackles, five sacks and one pass breakup. A versatile defender, he moved between inside and outside linebacker. Browning ended his time with the Buckeyes with 110 tackles and seven sacks in four seasons (43 games).

Broncos tenure: Denver picked Browning in the third round of the 2021 NFL draft. He started nine games at ILB as a rookie, totaling 58 tackles. Browning moved to OLB in 2022 and posted 24 tackles and five sacks in 14 games (eight starts). Last fall, Browning was healthy for 10 games and recorded 25 tackles and 4.5 sacks.

Chances to make the 53-man roster: Lock. Although Browning has yet to stay healthy for an entire season, he is arguably the team’s best OLB. Entering a contract year, he’ll aim for a breakout season before hitting free agency in 2025. Browning seems like a lock to start in Week 1.
