Baltimore high school football rivals suspended from playoffs following fight

Baltimore rival City and Poly football teams suspended from postseason following a fight.

Two of Baltimore’s best high school football teams will not be allowed to participate in the postseason following fights that broke out after their matchup on Friday night.

Baltimore City College (Md.) and Baltimore Polytechnic Institute (Md.) share one of the most intense rivalries in the nation, and in this case, it continued after the final whistle at Homewood Field at Johns Hopkins University, a neutral site.

According to Tim Tooten at WBALTV, the incidents began by the 30-yard line after City celebrated their 24-16 win and involved both players and spectators.

The district’s athletic director Tiffany Byrd explained the decision in a letter to both schools.

“Consistent with (Maryland Public Secondary Schools Athletic Association) rules and Baltimore City Public Schools athletic guidelines, when a team engages in a fight, they are automatically suspended for the next game. For both of our teams, this means that they will not participate in the state playoffs. We wanted to provide this communication as quickly as we could since state playoff brackets are being announced today. While the playoff game forfeiture is final, there could be additional consequences as we continue to review available information…”

Byrd also noted this was not the first time that these two teams have had a similar incident.

City finishes their season with a 6-3 record, and Poly at 7-2.

Baltimore vs New York Giants Game Preview

Why Baltimore Will Win

Do the Giants have anyone left?

They made a wonderful comeback to beat Green Bay last week, but they had to make the trip back from London, they’re all banged up across the board, and now they get a Ravens team that should be able to pound away.

The Packers got away from the ground attack a bit, but just about everyone else is able to grind it out if they commit to the run. It won’t be just Lamar Jackson, the Baltimore backs will all keep things moving.

But …

Week 6 CFN NFL Expert Picks

Why New York Giants Will Win

So how is this working? What are the Giants doing that’s bring the stunning wins week after week?

Consistency overall, for one.

They’re going to crank up about 330 yards against Baltimore, because that’s what the Giants do.

They’re getting a great year out of the league’s second-best ground game, the defense doesn’t allow touchdown runs – even if gives up yards – and to go schmaltzy, this is a full four quarter team. The effort matters with this bunch, but …

Week 6 NFL Schedule, Predictions, Game Previews

What’s Going To Happen

The Giants aren’t going to be able to take advantage of Baltimore’s mediocre pass defense, and they’re not going to force any key mistakes because they don’t generate nearly enough consistent takeaways – they don’t come up with picks.

The Ravens never seem to make anything easy, but at some point the Giants are going to hit a bit of a wall. That’s this week.

Bills’ Devin Singletary pulls back curtain on final seconds vs. Ravens

While it might not have seemed it, #Bills RB Devin Singletary was integral for his team in the final seconds vs the #Ravens:

Buffalo Bills RB Devin Singletary got off to a shaky start during Week 5’s game against the Baltimore Ravens, which included a fumble.

Yet he would bounce back to be a significant contributor on offense, including one pivotal play in a contest where the Bills would also comeback to win.

“That’s always tough when you have a mistake like that, but my guys were behind me,” Singletary via the Buffalo News. “We kept rallying. We knew that wasn’t us in the first half, and all we were preaching is to come out and be us in the second half and we were able to do that and get the win. All you can do is keep going and take it play-by-play. Execution fuels the team, and that brings energy, and we were able to get that going.”

Head coach Sean McDermott allowed QB Josh Allen to lead the offense in clock and game management on what would prove to be the teams game-winning drive.

While in the huddle Allen reminded Singletary to get down before the goal line, Baltimore could let him score a touchdown to give themselves a shot at a kickoff return and another offensive possession. The Bills RB did just that, allowing Allen to take two kneel-downs and Tyler Bass a game-winning field goal in the final seconds.

McDermott was impressed by the overall play of the running back in the victory.

“Very impressed. Not surprised. He does a great job resetting and sticking with it,” McDermott said to the media. “Really good football player, great intangibles and we’re happy to have him.”

“I can’t rave enough about what he is, who he is, and what he does for this team,” Allen said to the media after the game. “I urge everybody that’s watching football, if you’re a young kid, if you’re in college, whatever, you turn on Devin Singletary tape and you watch him, how he sprints to the ball, whether he’s got it or not. He’s downfield picking guys up, he’s doing everything right in practice. He’s running 50-60 yards, getting in the end zone and coming right back and running another play. The dude, all he knows is work and that’s why his name is ‘Motor’ and he lives up to the name. I can go on and on about what’s type of person he is. I freaking love the kid.”

Bills center Mitch Morse also heaped praise on Singletary and his work ethic as well.

“He’s a professional,” Morse said to the press. “Really takes pride in his work, pride in what he does for this offense and we love him for it. He’s been doing it at a high level for a very long time. It seems like when we need those big moments, he’s one of those guys that steps in.”

After the game, Singletary noted how the team practices final-play situations.

“We kept preaching to each other, ‘Let’s be us, take it play and play, and let’s try to execute,” the RB added. “When we were able to execute, you can see the energy in the game. To come out on the winning side, it feels great, and it shows that we are continuing to grow.”

Bills’ Josh Allen on comeback vs. Ravens: ‘Those are games you love winning’

#Bills’ Josh Allen on comeback vs. #Ravens: ‘Those are games you love winning’

The Buffalo Bills finished the day on Sunday with a 23-20 lead that gave them a victory over the Baltimore Ravens.

While the final score might suggest the game was close, it wasn’t for very long.

In fact, Buffalo was down early in the game as Baltimore leapt to a 20-3 lead before QB Josh Allen and the Bills offense scored 17 points to take that lead and win the game in the final seconds on a Tyler Bass field goal.

Those points would go unanswered thanks to another shutdown effort by the Bills defense that included an interception by Jordan Poyer in the final minutes of the fourth quarter.

No moment was too big, the Bills (3-1) kept their poise and played their way back into the contest.

“It’s situational football. It’s what coach McDermott preaches to us,” Allen said while speaking with the media after the game. “Defense leads to offense and offense puts us in positions to win games, a couple of huge kicks by Tyler Bass. Those are games that you love winning. It’s just a hard-fought battle both ways. Winning on the last play of the game is always fun and just proud of our guys for how they played.”

Despite their defense giving up 20 points early and the offense committing an interception and a fumble, those turnovers did not deter the team.

“I’ll tell you what, it would be very difficult if we didn’t have the guys in the locker room that we did,” Allen added. “Guys that just love each other, want to play for each other, aren’t going to stress in frantic situations.”

The QB executed effectively in managing the final 1:50 minutes of the game, which put the Bills in field goal range. It was an awareness by the QB of the time left on the clock that led to his instructing RB Devin Singletary in the huddle to make sure to go down and not score a TD on that last play by his offensive unit. Scoring a TD would have left time on the clock for the Ravens to return a kickoff and possibly have an offensive possession.

“He’s such a competitor to get us even into that situation to begin with,” McDermott said of Allen prior to leaving the stadium. “He loves to compete. And then what I saw today, in particular, Albert, was just he was so calm. He knew exactly what he wanted to do with the ball, and then he knew exactly what the situation was as we got closer to the goal line.”

Allen’s playmaking is not lost on his teammates either.

“We don’t take that for granted,” center Mitch Morse shared. “The offense goes the way he goes. That’s a lot of pressure to have on one pair of shoulders, and he carries it with grace. He always executes when we need him the most.”

The all-around win also demonstrated ways the Bills have improved across all three phases of football this season.

“It’s a combination of the defense doing their job, the offense, and even special teams,” TE Dawson Knox pointed out. “You want to treat each play like it has a life of its own, not harping on the past, not looking too far ahead. You want to dominate one play at a time and start to crawl back. The defense pitched a shutout in the second half. When they do that, it’s fun to be out there on offense.”

Notre Dame to play California in Shamrock Classic in St. Louis

Football not your thing? Get to St. Louis for a women’s hoops game one day instead.

Football no longer is the only sport in which Notre Dame and California will play each other this year. As the guys on the gridiron get set for battle at Notre Dame Stadium, the schools’ respective women’s basketball program are looking forward to their own meeting. The teams will play each other Nov. 12 in the first Shamrock Classic at St. Louis’ Enterprise Center, where Irish coach [autotag]Niele Ivey[/autotag] won the national title along with her other Irish teammates in 2001:

Ivey is not the only St. Louis native coaching this game. It’s also the city where Bears coach Charmin Smith is from, so you better believe both coaches are looking forward to this a lot.

Also of note is that this will be the first women’s basketball game to be shown on NBC and Peacock. Don’t worry about it interfering with football though. That program is facing Navy in Baltimore that day, so it won’t even be on the same network.

Here’s hoping this event is a big success (and an Irish win).

Ravens CB Marlon Humphrey shares excitement about team being ‘worldwide’

Ravens cornerback Marlon Humphrey spoke about his international travels

When it comes to the offseason, a lot of NFL players train for the upcoming season, travel, and just recover from various injuries after a grueling season. It gives players the opportunity to try out and experience many different things as they navigate through the spring and summer months of the offseason.

During a media session, Baltimore cornerback Marlon Humphrey was asked about his international travels and his trip to Israel. He shared his excitement that he found out the team is worldwide and appreciates the support from a fanbase that’s spread all around the globe.

“Yes, actually, surprisingly, there were some big Israeli fans out there. I had a couple spectators at a workout; they just found me on a local field. I donated my helmet to a fan that was at a gym I worked out at. It was kind of surprising. There were a lot of fans in Israel. Shoutout to the Ravens in Israel. The Ravens are worldwide – I found that out – and I do appreciate the support we have. It feels great to play for such a great fanbase that’s kind of spread throughout the [world].”

The NFL is making a point to try to grow their game internationally, and they have taken multiple steps to do so over the last few years. The league will likely continue to try to expand into new and uncharted territories, which bodes well for the Baltimore fanbase growing even larger.

Clemson’s Max Wagner saw his dream come true Tuesday when he signed his deal with the Baltimore Orioles.

The deal was reported to be for 1.9 million.

Sophomore infielder Max Wagner was selected in the second round by the Baltimore Orioles, who took Wagner with the 42nd overall pick.

Wagner burst on the scene this season en route to ACC Player of the Year honors. He led the Tigers in average (.369), RBIs (76), slugging percentage (.852) and on-base percentage (.496). Wagner tied Khalil Greene’s school record for the most home runs in a single season (27), tied for the third-most in ACC history.

Washington D.C./Baltimore snubbed in World Cup 2026 bid

The nation’s capital had a troubled bid process that saw it forced to merge with Baltimore’s bid at the last moment

The combined bid of Washington D.C. and Baltimore was not selected to host matches in the 2026 World Cup, as the nation’s capital made some unwanted history on Thursday.

For only the the second time in men’s World Cup history, the capital of a host country will not host any matches.

The only other time a capital or surrounding area missed out was in 1974, when the West German capital of Bonn did not host a match.

The snub marks the end of a difficult bid process for Washington, D.C. The city first began as a standalone bid with FedEx Field in suburban Maryland as its venue.

However, due to a myriad of issues with the stadium, which is home to the NFL’s Commanders, Washington D.C. merged its bid with nearby Baltimore in April.

The joint bid would have seen matches played at M&T Bank Stadium in Baltimore, while a fan festival and other activities would be held in Washington.

Trey Mancini wins MLB Comeback Player of the Year

Was there ever any doubt from the second he stepped on the field this past opening day?

In a year that saw some incredible performances there was no easier Major League Baseball award to be given out than the American League Comeback Player of the Year Award that went to Trey Mancini of the Baltimore Orioles on Monday night.

Mancini, a former Notre Dame star, returned to the Orioles after missing the entire 2020 season after being diagnosed with colon cancer during spring training.  Mancini hit 21 home runs and batted in 71 runs in 147 games this season.

Mancini also made a splash during the All-Star Game festivities in Colorado when he finished second in the home run derby to Pete Alonso of the New York Mets.

Congratulations to Mancini for an incredible return to the field in 2021!

Cincinnati vs Baltimore Game Preview

Why Cincinnati Will Win

Do the Ravens have any running backs left?

That doesn’t always matter when it comes to the Baltimore attack – especially with Lamar Jackson cranking up the passing game – but the Cincinnati run defense has been terrific this year and should keep from getting gouged.

Baltimore is fourth in the NFL in rushing yards, but the Bengals are good at getting behind the line, they have yet to allow 140 yards on the ground, and on the flip side, here comes the Bengal offense.

Joe Burrow has cranked it back up after two early mediocre days, throwing for 250 yards or more in each the last three games. Throw in a running game that’s improved in each of the last three weeks and …

Week 7 CFN NFL Expert Picks

Why Baltimore Will Win

The Raven defense is humming.

Fourth in total yards allowed, Baltimore held the high-powered Charger attack to just 208 yards and six points after getting torched for over 500 by Indianapolis the week before.

The pass defense is strong, the run D is better, and – again – it doesn’t matter who’s in the backfield. The running game keeps on working, hitting 187 yards last week and controlling the battle throughout.

Cincinnati has the stats, but that’s partly because it hasn’t dealt with a running game like this.

What’s Going To Happen

Cincinnati is coming off its best performance of the year – a blowout win over Detroit – but the offense isn’t going to get the ground attack working this week.

Burrow will be fine. He’ll hit his weekly deep shot to Ja’Marr Chase for a score, but Jackson will match him big play for big play with a balanced effort and a sixth straight Raven win.
