Happy Gilmore commits to Ball State, gets Adam Sandler’s blessing

Happy Gilmore — yes, that is his name — committed to Ball State, which prompted a response from Adam Sandler himself.

Happy Gilmore didn’t break Twitter when announcing his college commitment — he was testing its durability.

Bloomington South (Ind.) senior Happy Gilmore, whose real name is Landon but was monikered Happy at the age of 6, committed to Ball State University on Friday. According to Golfweek, the high school golfer shot 66 at a U.S. Junior Amateur qualifier and is ranked 497th in the Golfweek/Sagarin boys rankings.

With the announcement, people on Twitter saw the graphic and started spreading it around, prompting responses from notable figures, including Adam Sandler himself, who starred in the 1996 golf film as the titular character with the explosive spirit and wacky swing.

“Go get em Happy. Pulling for you,” Sandler tweeted.

Shooter McGavin also took note of the commitment:

Gilmore told the Indy Star that he started going by Happy full-time when he was around 13 years old. His caddie posts his scores to the website Team Happy Gilmore, which was updated through April as of his commitment time.

“I don’t think it adds any pressure to me,” Gilmore said of his name in an interview with the Indy Star. “But I do know that whatever I do is going to be seen. Especially as far as leaderboards when people are scrolling down and see ‘Happy Gilmore’ they are going to look at it, obviously. So I do know that, but I don’t let it get in my head or that I have to play good because of it. I just go out and do my thing.”

In other words, he has already risen above the pressure.

Adam Sandler congratulates the real-life Happy Gilmore on committing to Ball State golf

Yes, there’s a real Happy Gilmore. And yes, he’s very good at golf.

Happy Gilmore is leaving the big screen and joining the putting greens. At least, if you’re a fan of Ball State men’s golf.

We’re not talking about the 1996 film of the same name, though. We’re talking about the high school golfer turned media sensation who announced his commitment to play college golf for the Cardinals on Friday.

Adam Sandler, who plays the titular character in the comedy about a hockey player turned golf star, offered his congratulations to the real-life Gilmore on his commitment in a tweet that is sure to warm your heart if you’re a fan of the movie.

Gilmore’s response was even better.

Gilmore — a Bloomington, Indiana, native whose legal name is actually Landon James Gilmore — earned the nickname “Happy” after winning a long-drive contest at the age of nine. Pretty easy to see how they may have put that one together.

He went viral in May 2022 while trying to qualify for the U.S. Open as an amateur. But while he may have a memeable name, he can also play. Gilmore ranks inside the top 500 of the junior boys’ amateur rankings, and he shot a 66 at U.S. Open qualifying.

But he’s also never played hockey in his life, so just don’t be expecting any slapshots at the tee.

Why Ball State Will Win

The Ball State offensive line has to take over early.

It’s doing a decent enough job for the ground game – averaging close to five yards per carry over the last three weeks – and it’s fantastic at keeping defenses out of the backfield.

Miami University has the No. 1 run defense in the MAC, but that doesn’t mean Ball State shouldn’t try plowing away.

The RedHawks are 1-4 when allowing more than 110 rushing yards and 4-2 when they don’t. Ball State has been able to pus past 110 yards in five of the last six games, but …

Bowl Projections | Bowl Bubble: Who’s Bowl Eligible?

Why Miami University Will Win

The Ball State defense isn’t coming up with enough key stops.

It’s consistently mediocre against the run, it’s not coming up with enough takeaways, and it’s just okay on third downs. It’s hardly awful – it allowed 21 points or fewer in four of the last six games – but it won’t come up with the big takeaways.

Miami University’s offense is struggling, but it doesn’t turn it over enough to matter – the two giveaways against Northern Illinois marked just the second time all year there were multiple turnovers – and it’ll be more than happy to make this a low-scoring fight.

Week 13 College Football Schedule, Game Previews

What’s Going To Happen

This is about one more game.

This is about the swag bag, the free vacation, and one more game of football with the winner becoming bowl eligible and the loser is done.

Ball State’s offense is just a little bit better and Miami’s offense struggles way too much to score.

The Redhawks are 1-6 when scoring fewer than 21 points, but their defense has held down most of the mediocre attacks. Ball State will slip by with the running of Carson Steele taking over late.

Notre Dame dismantles Ball State, 95-60

The Irish keep rolling.

The following is courtesy of Notre Dame athletics:

SOUTH BEND, Ind. — The most complete performance to date.

That was the way Karen & Kevin Keyes Head Coach Niele Ivey unquestioningly described her team’s 95-60 dismantling of Ball State (2-2) on Sunday at Purcell Pavilion to move to 4-0 on the year. No. 9 Notre Dame left little to no doubt from the start, scoring 27 points in both the first and second quarters and holding Ball State to just nine points in the second 10 minutes. Notre Dame led by as much as 39, and five Irish players finished with 10+ points for the second time this year.

A huge piece of that first-half deluge came as a result of guard Dara Mabrey’s five three-pointers before the break, the first time she’s had such a showing since sinking seven threes against Oklahoma in last year’s NCAA Tournament. Mabrey finished with a total of 19 points, three rebounds and three assists.

“Dara’s one of the best three-point shooters in the country,” Ivey said. “Seeing her light it up from the perimeter right away from the beginning of the game [is awesome].”

Notre Dame topped the Cardinals in every category, including bench points (41-17), fast breaks (19-11) and second chance points (15-6). The Irish blocked eight shots, including a season-high three from center Lauren Ebo. She had her first double-double in a Notre Dame uniform on Sunday, finishing with 11 points and 10 rebounds.

A couple of newcomers posted career highs in the points category against the Cardinals; graduate student and Stanford transfer Jenna Brown had 10, while freshman KK Bransford posted 16.

“It was special for me, and it was special for my teammates to see what I can bring to the team,” Bransford said after the game. “Tonight I felt really confident just knowing that [my teammates] have my back.”

Bransford went 8-8 from the free throw line and posted six rebounds as well. She is the lone freshman currently on the team, but she played like a veteran on Sunday.

The depth and contributions across the board bode well for Ivey, who has hopes of making the Final Four for the 10th time in program history.

“I think that we’re just scratching the surface.”

Notre Dame heads to the Bahamas this week to play in the Goombay Splash for a Thanksgiving tournament. First up is a match against American (0-3) on Thursday at 4:15 p.m. The contest can be streamed on FloHoops, and additional information about the tournament can be found here.

Why Ohio Will Win

The Bobcats can’t quite lock up the MAC East title with a win, but …

They can realistically lock up the MAC East title with a win. They need to win and Bowling Green has to lose at Toledo. Otherwise it comes down to next week’s matchup between the two for the division.

For now, the high-powered passing game should be enough.

The offense leads the MAC in yards and is second in scoring thanks to the high-powered air show that’s ripping through everyone.

The Ball State pass defense is fine against attacks that don’t throw a ton, but the team is 0-4 against teams that go for 230 yards or more.

Ohio has thrown for over 230 in seven games going 6-1. However …

Bowl Projections

Why Ball State Will Win

Ohio defense, welcome to Mr. Steele.

Carson Steele has the name, the game, and the hair to become a star around the MAC world, running for 1,280 yards and 12 touchdowns with five straight 100-yard games. He’s going to be the workhorse from the start to keep the Bobcat O off the field.

The Ohio run defense has been able to pull off a shocker here and there, but for the most part it gets barreled on.

Ball State relies on Steele to set the tone, is getting a nice year out of the offensive line, and …

Schedules, Predictions CollegeNFL

What’s Going To Happen

There isn’t enough of a downfield passing game for the Cardinals to keep up.

The other problem is the inability to control the clock. Steele might be a hammer, but Ball State doesn’t do enough to control the tempo. However, Ohio isn’t playing in Peden.

The Bobcats are 5-0 at home, 2-3 away – granted, two of those losses were to Iowa State and Penn State – and this is the final home game of the year for the Cardinals.

Ohio pulls it off, but Ball State makes it a fight.

Ball State vs Toledo Game Preview

Why Ball State Will Win

Toledo was able to get the win over Eastern Michigan, but it didn’t have star QB Dequan Finn and likely won’t have him in this.

Ball State has the biggest problem holding up against the run, and as much as it can load up and make Tucker Gleason – if Finn really can’t go – throw, the better. Gleason might be able to run and he wasn’t bad against Eastern Michigan, but he’s not Finn.

On the other side, Ball State’s offensive line continues to be a major plus. It doesn’t allow plays in the backfield and Toledo’s D all but lives on getting behind the line in key moments.

However …

Bowl Bubble: Every Team’s Bowl Situation

Why Toledo Will Win

Gleason was actually very good against Eastern Michigan.

He might not be as accurate as Finn or as dynamic, but he didn’t make any mistakes last week and this week he should be able to rely on the ground attack.

Ball State’s run defense is awful. It’s usually able to overcome the problems – the Rockets got rolled by Northern Illinois and Kent State and still won – but just assume Toledo runs for 200 yards and go from there.

Turnovers mean almost everything. Toledo is 0-3 when turning it over multiple times and 6-0 when it doesn’t. Grind, run, and don’t force throws – everything else should work if the team is relatively conservative. It also helps that …

Schedules, Predictions CollegeNFL

What’s Going To Happen

Ball State is great at taking the ball away … at home.

The defense is good enough to keep Toledo from running away with this, but nine of the 12 takeaways happened in Muncie. Even so, with the exception of the loss to Tennessee, just about every Cardinal game is relatively close – for good and for bad.

Ball State can take control of the MAC West with a win, and Toledo can all but close it if it wins.

The Rockets will rise up at home. If they win and Western Michigan loses to Northern Illinois on Wednesday, the West is wrapped up.

Ball State vs Kent State Game Preview

Why Ball State Will Win

The Cardinals have to be able to get their offense moving, and the Kent State defense should be able to help the cause.

They like to move quickly, but no one gets going like the Kent State offense. It might go against type, but the chance to control the clock and the tempo could be there for a Ball State attack that’s been struggling to consistently put  up points.

Fortunately, the Golden Flashes have massive problems against the run – Ball State should be able to rumble for 200 yards behind a strong line.

However …

NFL Expert Picks, Week 9

Why Kent State Will Win

If the FlashFast style of offense works for Kent State, Ball State doesn’t have the offense to keep up. The Cardinals aren’t exactly slow-and-stodgy, but Kent State does the whole quick attack thing better.

The big flaw for the Golden Flashes is a secondary that gives up way too many big plays, but that’s not a concern with Ball State.

There’s no real downfield passing game to worry about, and the scoring punch just isn’t there with just 25 points or fewer in four of the last five games.

Ball State will try relying on its defense, but …

– Game Previews, Predictions CollegeNFL

What’s Going To Happen

Kent State runs better than anyone in the MAC.

The ground attack should get over 200 yards as it keeps the Ball State defense on its heels all game long. This will be close throughout – the Golden Flash defense will give up plenty of yards – but the Cardinals won’t be able to cash in.

Eastern Michigan vs Ball State Game Preview

Why Eastern Michigan Will Win

What the heck was that?

Just when it seemed like Eastern Michigan was about to go on a run, it didn’t show up at home in a stunning 39-10 loss to Northern Illinois.

That wasn’t normal. The running game didn’t work, the run defense didn’t work, nothing worked. However, it should be able to hold up against a Ball State passing game that sputtered over the last few weeks.

Ball State isn’t good against the run, Eastern Michigan will hammer away for well over four yards per carry, and the team should settle down after last week’s debacle. However …

NFL Expert Picks, Week 7

Why Ball State Will Win

Eastern Michigan is weird. It was able to beat Arizona State and couldn’t do anything defensively against Buffalo or Northern Illinois.

It’s not going to do enough against Ball State this week.

The Cardinals haven’t been perfect, but they’re on a three-game winning streak with with the offensive line doing a nice job of keeping defenses out of the backfield and the D taking the ball away on a regular basis. That’s why …

– Game Previews, Predictions CollegeNFL

What’s Going To Happen

Eastern Michigan is going to have issues. It doesn’t have huge turnover problems, but it’s -10 overall in turnover margin because the D isn’t doing its part.

Ball State has come up with multiple takeaways five of the last six games, and it’ll do it here, too. That will be just enough to get by in an uneven game with neither side able to get comfortable.

UConn vs Ball State Game Preview

Why UConn Will Win

Can Ball State stop the run? Sort of, but not really.

Usually the run defense holds up mostly because teams chose to throw, but commit to the ground attack and it’s possible to bash a bit.

UConn has won its last two games with a strong defensive performance against Fresno State and by running for close to 300 yards against FIU. It’s going to have to keep the clock moving and control the line.

Ball State’s defense doesn’t do enough to get into the backfield, the offense doesn’t do well on third downs, and …

NFL Expert Picks, Week 6

Why Ball State Will Win

The Cardinals are finding ways to win, taking three of the last four with the passing attack taking over when the running game isn’t working.

The defense is taking the ball away forcing multiple turnovers in four of the last five games – UConn can’t afford any giveaways or mistakes.

There’s no passing game from the Huskies to worry about. Keep them to under 200 rushing yards and all should be okay.

– Schedules, Previews CollegeNFL

What’s Going To Happen

Ball State might not be perfect, but good passing teams are the bigger problem for its D. The good ground games aren’t that big of an issue.

UConn is plucky enough to hang around and keep this tight for a while, but the Ball State offense will start to throw well enough to pull away in the second half.
