The top performing Badgers in the NFL in Week 12

A look at the top Badgers in the NFL in Week 12

Wisconsin’s Week 12 standouts in the NFL included a number of familiar names. T.J. Edwards had a breakout night on Monday Night Football in the Bears’ 12-10 win over the Vikings, recording six tackles and coming away with an interception along with a pass defended.

Jonathan Taylor found pay dirt twice for the Colts in their 27-20 win over the Buccaneers while Russell Wilson kept the Broncos in the playoff hunt by leading them to a crucial win over the Browns.

Rookie Nick Herbig recorded the second sack of his NFL career as he helped the Badgers of the NFL also known as the Pittsburgh Steelers to a key win over the Bengals.

Here is a look at the standouts in Week 12:

Another weekly recap of the performances of former Wisconsin Badgers in the NFL, another terrific weekend for Russell Wilson.

The former Wisconsin star was in a rough place in 2022 under Nathaniel Hackett. Now, the Broncos have won four straight games under Wilson and Sean Payton and the signal-caller leads the NFL in touchdown-to-interception ratio. His last-minute touchdown on Sunday Night Football was a pretty good example of what this season has been like in Denver.

There were also some defenders in the headlines. T.J. Watt added to his sack total, Jack Sanborn registered his first NFL sack and T.J. Edwards continues a terrific year.

For that, plus an older Wisconsin product who found his way back on an NFL field, here is how every former Wisconsin Badger performed in NFL Week 11:

Former Wisconsin defenders had yet another memorable day in the NFL yesterday.

The weekend started with former Badger defensive lineman Beau Allen leading the Badgers on the field on Saturday night. It then continued with several Wisconsin products making game-changing plays on Sunday.

Two of those players had the Bears in position to pull an upset in Detroit, and one future Hall Of Famer continued his absolute dominance of a division foe.

First, an interception by Chicago Bears linebacker T.J. Edwards:

Edwards finished with nine tackles and the one interception. He’s up to 121 tackles on the season.

Next, a sack by Bears LB Jack Sanborn in the same contest:

That was Sanborn’s first career NFL sack.

And finally, future Hall of Famer T.J. Watt with another sack against the Browns:

Don’t look now, but the Denver Broncos are 5-5 on the season and former Wisconsin quarterback Russell Wilson is playing some really good football.

Last year’s disaster under Nathaniel Hackett is proving to be that, a Hackett-related disaster. New head coach Sean Payton and Wilson now have the rejuvenated Broncos on a four-game win streak after last night’s 21-20 win over the Vikings.

Wilson was 27/35 in the contest for 259 yards, 1 touchdown and zero interceptions. His season line is now up to 69% completion, 2065 yards, 19 touchdowns and four interceptions, plus 42 carries for 232 rushing yards.

He isn’t quite the Russell Wilson of old. But 2023 has been an impressive return to solid play from the Wisconsin legend.

You can add last night’s game-winning touchdown pass to Courtland Sutton to the mounting pile of evidence that Russ may be back:

Week 10 of the 2023 NFL season concluded last night as the Russell Wilson-led Denver Broncos stole a win in Buffalo against the Bills.

A twofold takeaway from that game: the Bills are in trouble, and Wilson and the Broncos are playing much better than last season.

Wilson was not the only former Wisconsin Badger at the center of the action this weekend. Jonathan Taylor and Jake Ferguson both found the end zone again, T.J. Watt set another record and T.J. Edwards is on pace for two million tackles.

Here are stats from those performances, and from every former Wisconsin Badger in NFL Week 10:

The NFL world revolved around Houston, Texas for a few minutes on Sunday afternoon. Texans kicker Ka’imi Fairbairn went down with an injury during the team’s game against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, thrusting the team’s emergency kicker into duty.

That player: former Wisconsin running back Dare Ogunbowale.

What came next was madness. First, the former Badger performed well at kickoffs. Then, the Texans faced a fourth-and-goal from the 12-yard line. They needed a field goal.

And Ogunbowale delivered, becoming the first non-kicker or punter to make a field goal since wide receiver Wes Welker did it in 2004 for the Dolphins.

Texans QB C.J. Stroud spoke with ESPN’s Scott Van Pelt on Monday Night Countdown last night and told his side of the story:

Week 9 of the NFL season is in the books as many teams officially surpass the midway point of their seasons.

For Wisconsin Badgers in the NFL, it was a week in the spotlight.

First, former Badger RB Dare Ogunbowale was thrust into emergency kicking duties in Houston. He ended up booting kicks for touchbacks and connecting on his only field goal attempt (29 yards).

Then, former Wisconsin TE Jake Ferguson gave the Eagles defense fits in America’s Game Of The Week.

Overall it was a productive week for Wisconsin products. Here is how every one of them performed in NFL Week 9:

Former Wisconsin RB Dare Ogunbowale re-writes an NFL record

Former Wisconsin RB Dare Ogunbowale re-writes an NFL record:

Former Wisconsin running back Dare Ogunbowale has struggled to find playing time this year in Houston.

Entering Sunday’s contest against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers he had only seen 16 total offensive snaps, during which he took two carries for four yards. Most of Ogunbowale’s action has come on special teams.

Yesterday, a few more special teams snaps became available. But not in a conventional way…The former Wisconsin Badger was forced into kicking duties when Texans kicker Ka’imi Fairbairn was injured on a kickoff.

What did Ogunbowale do? Drill a 29-yard, go-ahead field goal midway through the fourth quarter.

He became the first non-kicker or punter to make a field goal since Wes Welker did it as a Miami Dolphin.

And then there’s this:

Whichever way you look at it, it’s an incredible feat. As many around the Wisconsin football program have noted since yesterday afternoon, it was something they could’ve seen coming.

We’re almost at the halfway point of the 2023 NFL season already, or the midpoint of the regular season at least.

The year has always seen former Wisconsin Badgers hold national relevance. Steelers OLB T.J. Watt is playing like an All-pro yet again, Broncos QB Russell Wilson is improving on last year’s disaster, Colts RB Jonathan Taylor is back on the field, Bears ILB T.J. Edwards might finish with 200 total tackles and more.

While the team in Madison is a disappointing 5-3 so far this season, many of the program’s now-NFL players are playing quite well.

Badgers continue to ball out at the next level

Wisconsin legends continue to show out at the next level and Week 8 had a number of standout performances from former Badgers.

The headliner was the return of Jonathan Taylor, who after contract disputes with the Indianapolis Colts finally returned to the field with 12 carries for 95 yards. Taylor also surpassed the 4,000 career rushing yards mark in the Week 8 matchup.

Jake Ferguson continued to be an essential part of the Cowboys offense, catching a touchdown pass in a runaway win over the Rams. Russell Wilson helped lead his Broncos to an upset win over the Chiefs at Mile High in a game Denver had to have. Here is a look at the top performances from Week 8:
