Austin Novosad shows promise, room for growth early on in spring practice

Dan Lanning likes what he sees out of QB Austin Novosad, but naturally, there’s a lot to improve upon.

Spring practice is a time to shake the rust off. In the case of some young players, it’s a chance to rip the bandaid off and see how you can stack up against established college athletes.

For true freshman quarterback Austin Novosad, the first week of spring practice in Eugene was the latter.

Novosad is one of the many young athletes that arrived in camp early in hopes of getting a jump start on his career. Unless injuries occur, 2023 will be a redshirt season for the 6-foot-3, 185-pounder from Dripping Springs, Texas, but being able to get his feet wet in the spring will ultimately give him more experience down the road.

According to head coach Dan Lanning, Novosad has looked good so far, but still has a lot of room for improvement.

“I think he’s really smart. I think that shows with the way he attacks each day and plays,” Lanning said. “I know he wants a couple of plays back today and I know he’s gonna be a guy that cares enough that he’s going to learn from it and so I’m excited about his progress.”

Media members were not allowed to watch more than 20 minutes of the start of practice on either Thursday or Saturday, so we did not get to see Novosad in action. However, I’m told by someone who watched the practice that there were multiple turnovers, and Novosad was responsible for at least one of them.

“He throws a tight spiral, but he needs to deliver it in the right location a few more times,” Lanning said.

Should everything stay status quo with no injuries and no transfers between now and fall camp next season, the battle between Novosad and Ty Thompson to immediately replace Bo Nix in 2024 could be an interesting one, to say the least.

Oregon Spring Ball Player Spotlight: Austin Novosad and the future of the Ducks’ QB position

There are a handful of Ducks we can’t wait to see once spring ball starts. QB Austin Novosad is near the top of the list.

The Oregon Ducks will be taking the practice field and getting the spring football season started a week from today. This fact has brought a ton of excitement to Eugene.

Why? Because after the successful and encouraging 2022 season under Dan Lanning, there seems to be more anticipation surrounding this program than we’ve seen in the past few seasons. The Ducks have a Heisman contender at quarterback, a potential Biletnikoff contender at wide receiver, and a running back group that could be among the best in the nation next season. On the defensive side of the ball, there are some key returning starters in the front seven, a couple of promising up-and-coming players in the secondary, and a handful of intriguing transfer-portal players who could end up making a massive difference for Oregon. On top of all of that, the Ducks are fresh off of back-to-back top-15 recruiting classes, stacking the roster with young, unproven talent.

It’s safe to say that there are a handful of guys that we can’t wait to see take the field in Eugene.

To kick off our preview of some of these players, we wanted to focus on QB Austin Novosad, a 4-star player from the 2023 class who flipped to Oregon late in the game, choosing Will Stein and the Ducks over the Baylor Bears.

Here’s our breakdown of the young QB who could end up giving a glimpse of what’s to come this spring in Eugene.

Dan Lanning on QB Austin Novosad: ‘He has elite arm talent’

Oregon Ducks quarterback Austin Novosad has impressed Dan Lanning so far, and will learn a lot from Bo Nix and Ty Thompson in 2023.

The Oregon Ducks pulled off a massive recruiting flip in late December, stealing 4-star quarterback Austin Novosad from the Baylor Bears as a way to replace the loss of 5-star Dante Moore – who flipped to UCLA earlier that week.

Novosad has a long-standing relationship with new offensive coordinator Will Stein, and now he’ll have a chance to compete alongside Bo Nix and Ty Thompson in Oregon’s talented and experienced quarterback room.

Dan Lanning, speaking to assembled media after national signing day on Wednesday, believes being around those talented quarterbacks will help Novosad develop in his first year in Eugene.

“I’m really excited about what what he brings to our program,” Lanning said of Novosad. “I think he has an elite arm talent. And I think we have a mature quarterback room around him. And Ty and Bo both, I think will really pour into him to help him, you know, be great moving forward.”

Lanning admits he hasn’t had much time around Novosad since he arrived on campus, as he’s been out on the recruiting trail, but he’s excited to get more time with his team – newcomers and returners – as they prepare for another run through the Pac-12 and potentially into the College Football Playoffs.

“These guys have been grinding really hard the last month really with our strength coaches and the guys that are on the team,” Lanning said. “So that’s maybe the thing I’m most excited about as we approach the month of February is to get to spend more quality time with the players that are on our team.”

Social Media Buzz: Duck fans react to Austin Novosad, Dante Moore in All-American Bowl

Oregon QB Austin Novosad had some nice throws at the All-American Bowl, but Dante Moore stole the show.

The second of three high school football showcases, the All-American Bowl, took place on Saturday afternoon in San Antonio and aired on NBC.

A couple of future Oregon Duck players were on the field and showed what they could do along with a number of other elite prospects Oregon fans likely kept a close eye on.

Five-star quarterback Dante Moore stole the show, throwing for four touchdowns in a blowout win for the East team. As a former Oregon commit, it was at the very least entertaining for Duck fans to watch Moore sling it. Austin Novosad also had a chance to show what he can do, but the Ducks’ signee struggled, dealing with inconsistent offensive line play and receivers who dropped a couple of passes that were on target.

In the end, it was a good showcase of talent in the 2023 class, and college football fans had an enjoyable time watching it. Here are some of the best reactions to the play throughout the game:

4-star QB Austin Novosad continues to impress at Day 2 of All-American Bowl practice

Oregon QB Austin Novosad had another strong day at All-American Bowl practice in San Antonio on Wednesday.

As we continue to go through the All-American week in the world of high school recruiting, the focus for Oregon Duck fans is starting to hone in on 4-star QB signee Austin Novosad.

While the weekend and early days of the week were focused on the Under Armour All-American game, where guys like 4-star WR Ashton Cozart and 4-star DL Ashton Porter turned heads, the start of practice at the All-American Bowl down in San Antonio as seen a new group of Ducks take the stage. Most notably, Oregon’s newest quarterback has started to make some waves.

4-star QB Austin Novosad is turning heads down in Texas. The former Baylor commit who flipped to the Ducks on signing day was named the No. 1 passer in the group on Tuesday, and he continued with another strong day on Wednesday, being named the No. 2 passer in the group, behind only 5-star UCLA signee Dante Moore.

Take a look at some of his highlights from the day:

Oregon QB Austin Novosad turns heads; 4-star DL Ashton Porter sees stock rise

Oregon QB Austin Novosad was ranked ahead of Dante Moore at All-American Bowl practice, and Ashton Porter saw a big stock rise in the UA All-American game.

The first week of the new year has given us a great chance to get a closer look at some of the top recruits in the 2023 cycle, and for fans of the Oregon Ducks, that means that a lot of news is coming in about the new class coming to Eugene this spring.

Among the most notable players drawing buzz this week is Oregon’s 4-star QB Austin Novosad. After flipping from Baylor to the Ducks on signing day in December, Novosad comes to Eugene with hopes of being the QB of the future for the Ducks. Novosad suited up for practice at the All-American Bowl on Tuesday in San Antonio, Texas, and he was able to turn a lot of heads, being ranked as the No. 1 QB on site, according to On3.

Elsewhere, Oregon’s newest defensive lineman Ashton Porter — who announced his commitment to the Ducks at halftime of the Under Armour All-American Game on Tuesday — saw his stock rise a lot as he gets set to head off to college.

Here is a roundup of everything that media members are saying about Duck commits after Tuesday:

Where did the top quarterbacks sign in the 2023 recruiting class?

Jackson Arnold to Oklahoma and Arch Manning to Texas, but where did the rest of the top quarterback sign to play college ball in 2023?

From the high school level to the NFL, quarterback play has become the greatest contributor to winning in the game of football. Teams can certainly win without great quarterback play, but they must have an elite defense and running game to do so.

So when a team lands one of the top quarterbacks in a recruiting class, it’s a big deal.

The Oklahoma Sooners have had their fair share of great quarterbacks over the last 20 years. Sooner quarterbacks have won four Heisman trophies and earned more trips to New York as a finalist as well.

In the 2023 cycle, the Sooners signed [autotag]Jackson Arnold[/autotag]. A four-star player at the time of his commitment last January, he has skyrocketed over the last 11 months. From earning Elite 11 MVP honors in the summer to becoming a consensus five-star player, Arnold’s stock has seen incredible growth. He backed that up with an incredible senior season, during which he accounted for 4,400 total yards and 57 touchdowns to help Denton Guyer reach the Texas 6A state semifinals.

He’s the highest-ranked player in the Oklahoma Sooners recruiting class, according to 247Sports. Arnold was the second-longest tenured commitment in the class before signing with Oklahoma on the first day of the early signing period. Pulling the No. 1 player in the state of Texas and the No. 7 player in the class is a huge win for [autotag]Brent Venables[/autotag] and [autotag]Jeff Lebby[/autotag].

Arnold’s addition helped ease the loss of Malachi Nelson, who flipped to USC to follow Lincoln Riley last December. Signing Arnold also helped the Sooners answer the Arch Manning signing by Texas.

There are a lot of good quarterbacks out there going to a lot of different places. Let’s take a look at where the top signal-callers landed.

Where the top 10 quarterbacks in the 2023 class are going

Where the best quarterbacks in the 2023 class are headed.

College football’s early signing period officially started on Wednesday as the majority of the top players in the nation are signing letters of intent.

Quarterbacks often serve as the crowned jewels of a recruiting class. Coaches are looking for a program changer at the most important position on the field. As a result, recruiting battles for the top passers are extremely competitive each season.

The 2023 cycle features one of the more talented quarterback classes of all time. Five different signal callers earned five-star rankings throughout the recruiting process highlighted by Arch Manning (Texas), Malachi Nelson (USC) and Nicholaus Iamaleava (Tennessee).

Four-star Austin Novosad made headlines with a signing day flip from Baylor to Oregon. A huge get for the Ducks to pull the Texas product out of state.

Each of 247Sports’ top 10 quarterbacks has committed and signed with their college programs. Here is where the top-ranked high school quarterbacks are headed next season.

Ducks flip 4-star QB Austin Novasad from Baylor Bears

A massive win for Dan Lanning and Oregon OC Will Stein. The Ducks have pulled off the flip and landed former Baylor commit Austin Novosad, the No. 9 QB in the nation.

The Oregon Ducks made a splash in the recruiting world on Wednesday, pulling off a flip that gets their quarterback room back in order after losing 5-star QB Dante Moore to the UCLA Bruins earlier in the week.

4-star quarterback Austin Novosad, the No. 9 QB and No. 86 overall player in the 2023 class, has announced that he will flip his commitment from the Baylor Bears and instead join the Ducks going forward. Novosad has a long-standing relationship with Oregon’s new offensive coordinator Will Stein, and once Stein came to Eugene and a spot at the QB position opened up, the wheels were in motion for the Ducks to pull off this flip.

With Bo Nix returning for the 2023 season, Novosad will be able to likely redshirt as a freshman and pick up some valuable experience from the veteran who projects to be a Heisman Trophy candidate this season. Going forward, Novosad could be in competition for the starting job in 2024.

The Ducks were dealt a tough blow on Monday when Moore announced that he would flip to UCLA, but Dan Lanning and his staff did a great job of quickly pivoting and finding a way to still get a win at the end of the day.

Ducks pick up new predictions to flip 4-star QB Austin Novosad from Baylor

Things are heating up for the Ducks as we head into the early signing day. Flip watch is officially on.

With the news on Monday that 5-star quarterback Dante Moore was going to flip his commitment from the Oregon Ducks to the UCLA Bruins, a lot of fans started to wonder what Dan Lanning and his staff were going to do going forward.

It has since become clear that the staff has been working on a contingency plan for a bit now, knowing that there was a chance that Moore was going to flip. That plan may be working.

A pair of 247Sports Crystal Ball Predictions came in on Tuesday night that show Baylor Bears’ 4-star QB Austin Novosad, the No. 9 QB in the 2023 class, is likely to flip to the Ducks.

Novosad has a relationship with new Oregon offensive coordinator Will Stein, and the two have kept in touch since Stein came to Eugene.

With Bo Nix returning for the 2023 season, it has become clear that the Ducks are set at the starting QB spot for this season, but they need players to fill out that room and compete for the starting job in 2024. Should they be able to pull off the flip from Baylor and land Novosad, who is the No. 86 overall player in the 2023 class, it would be an impressive pivot from Lanning and his staff after suffering a blow with the Moore decommitment.
