Freshman Caden Sorrell has become an invaluable member of No. 4 Texas A&M’s elite outfield

“Every single guy that we’ve got in the lineup is incredible. That’s why it’s so hard to get that starting spot because we have many guys.”

After intermittently starting to begin the 2024 season, Texas A&M freshman outfielder Caden Sorrell has quickly proven that he’s not only worthy of being an everyday starter, he’s also become an invaluable member of the No. 4 Aggies lineup.

“It’s been an amazing feeling. I started off not playing too much but kind of just making the most of every opportunity that I’ve been given. Staying true to my routine has been the biggest part for me,” Sorrell recalled postgame Friday night. “It can be a little unmotivating, depending on how you look at it. For me, it was just being the best teammate that I could be, even though I’m not playing, just being there for my guys.”

During a 12-8 win against Auburn at Blue Bell Park, Sorrell was 1-for-5 with 3 runs batted in, 1 home run and 1 run scored.

“The first two prior ABs weren’t too hot so I went up there and tried to do too much. Was just kind of moving guys over and doing the best that I could. It just so happened to carry out of the ballpark,” Sorrell said. “Our routine is to always stick to heaters, so that’s what we did, and we battled with two strikes.

“Every single guy that we’ve got in the lineup is incredible. That’s why it’s so hard to get that starting spot because we have so many guys that can hit. It’s amazing feeling that if you can’t do your job, you have someone behind you that can.”

‘Star power guys’: Texas A&M baseball coach Jim Schlossnagle reflects on series win vs. Auburn

“Those guys at the top, the star power guys are going to do their thing most days. The key is can we get on base enough towards the bottom?”

Following a 12-8 win against Auburn to clinch a second SEC series victory in a row, Texas A&M head coach Jim Schlossnagle spoke to the media on Friday night.

The No. 4 Aggies (24-3, 5-3 SEC) were led to the win at Blue Bell Park against the Tigers by junior right-handed pitcher Tanner Jones (2-1).

“That was as good as he’s pitched. The last game was pretty good, he had a cutter going a little bit, all three pitches for the most part and that’s the deepest he’s pitched,” Schlossnagle said. “Remember that he missed most of the preseason so he is still kind of behind everyone else in terms of appearances and innings pitched. He did well against a good lineup and on a tough night to pitch.”

The outfielder dynamic duo of junior Braden Montgomery and freshman Caden Sorrell led the way with 3 runs batted in, respectively.

“Those guys at the top, the star power guys, those guys are going to do their thing most days. The key is, can we get on base enough towards the bottom? Ali (Camarillo) had a great night. (Hayden) Schott has shown signs of coming back,” Schlossnagle recalled. “Sorrell has been staying on baseballs the other way. That’s a big sign for a good young player like that. I thought Targac’s first at-bat was tough when he smoked a ball to center field but the game rewarded him finally down the left field line, so I’m happy for Ryan.”

Texas A&M junior OF & RHP Braden Montgomery is among top tier of college prospects

“I knew I wouldn’t be getting as many fastballs as I would’ve liked so I just had to deal with what I got and see something over the plate.”

Texas A&M junior outfielder and right-handed pitcher Braden Montgomery departed Stanford last year for College Station and fans in Aggieland are extremely grateful for that.

Dylan Widger-USA TODAY Sports

Montgomery hit two home runs during a 12-8 win against Auburn to clinch an SEC series victory on Friday night at Blue Bell Park, surpassing fellow outfielder, sophomore Jace LaViolette, for the lead in homers.

“It feels great to have another win in the column,” Montgomery said postgame. “Obviously, I’m always going to have the playful noise back and forth with Jace. We’ll see if he can answer back. I was just seeing the ball over the plate and seeing really good swings on off-speed pitches. I knew I wouldn’t be getting as many fastballs as I would’ve liked so I just had to deal with what I got and see something over the plate.”

Montgomery finished 3-for-4 versus the Tigers with a game-high 3 runs batted in, 2 HR, 1 double, 2 runs scored and 1 walk. The versatile junior is quickly establishing himself amongst the top tier of college baseball prospects.

Game Three Recap & Highlights: Baseball – Texas A&M vs Auburn

The Aggie take game two of the double header over Auburn for their second SEC series win of the season

Texas A&M (20-12, 5-7 SEC) jumped out to an early lead in the second game of Friday’s doubleheader against Auburn (19-12-1, 4-8 SEC) and never looked back. The Aggies take game three and win the series over Auburn for their second straight SEC series win and have now won four of their last six SEC games.

The game started with a based loaded walk by Auburn to give Texas A&M a free run to start the game. Ryan Targac has found his bat again and hit a single into right-center field to take a 3-0 lead going into the bottom of the first inning. Auburn not wanting to be left behind add two of their runs to cut the lead to 3-2.

Auburn’s pitching struggled in the second inning and the Aggies took full advantage. After a walk from Max Kaufer and a single by Hunter Haas Whataburger player of the month, Jack Moss hit a single scoring Kaufer. An Austin Bost single loaded the bases and that was followed by back-to-back walks of Jace LaViolette and Targac for two more free runs. The final run of the inning was an RBI single by Jordan Thompson for a 7-3 lead.

A led extending single by Brett Minnich put the Aggies up 8-2, but the Auburn followed up with a four-run inning to pull within two runs in the bottom of the third cutting the lead to 8-6. Minnich was not going to let that slide and hit an RBI single scoring Moss then Trevor Werner hit a double putting Minnich across the plate. The last run of the inning came on a wild pitch allowing Werner to score pushing the lead to 11-6.

Aggie’s pitching and some good defense kept the Tigers from being able to mount a comeback keeping them scoreless after the third inning. With the game coming to an end Texas A&M added one more insurance run in the top of the eighth by an error on the pitcher that let Travis Chestnut get home in what ended up being the final run of the game for a 12-6 lead.

Final Score: Aggies 12, Tigers 6 – W: Rudis, Brad (4-0); L: Sheehan, Tommy (0-1)

The Aggies’ pitching still has a few issues closing out innings, but the offense has now found its groove, especially with Minnich back in the lineup. They are now back in the top three in SEC West standings after hovering in the bottom during the first few weeks of league play.

Texas A&M will be back in action on April 11th to host USTA in a midweek matchup at Blue Bell Park

Game Two Recap & Highlights: Baseball – Texas A&M vs Auburn

Texas A&M drops a close game one in Friday doubleheader against Auburn

Texas A&M (19-12, 4-7 SEC) dropped game two against Auburn (19-11, 4-7 SEC) in a game where a questionable call should have tied the game late. But when you constantly put yourself in bad positions the pendulum will not always swing your way.

It’s safe to say Brett Minnich is officially back. He got the scoring started after hitting a three-run home run putting Jack Moss and Austin Bost across home plate. Feeling good, the Aggies took a 3-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning. That lead did not last long as Texas A&M gave up two runs in what’s becoming a tradition so far this year.

Tell me if you’ve heard this before, with two outs Texas A&M give up a three-run home run to tie it 3-3, then gave up a double and two singles allowing the Tigers to take the lead 3-5 after the inning was over.

The Tigers added three more scores in the third off a few wild pitches and hits to extend their lead to 3-8. The Aggies answered back a Jace Laviolette home run in the top of the fourth scoring himself and Ryan Targac for a 5-8 score. But Auburn, staying just a few steps ahead, added another score in the fifth to make it 5-9.

Laviolette hit his second two-run homer of the night to pull within two scores, but once again Auburn answered back with another score. Both teams went scored in the seventh and eighth innings making the score 7-10 in Auburn’s favor in the final frame.

The Tiger’s pitching got the jitters in the top of the ninth inning giving the Aggies a chance to tie up the game. The inning started off well with a Trevor Werner single followed up by a balk putting him on second base with no outs. A Targac single put runners at the corners and an in-field hit by LaViolette scored Werner, but fielders’ choice just left one runner on base with one out. Back-to-back walks loaded the bases and Hunter Hass hit a single through the left side scoring LaViolette, but a phantom tag of Kasen Wells at home plate took away what would have been the tying run. Unfortunately, Bost would line out on the final leaving three runners on base for a 9-10 loss to Auburn.

Final Score: Aggies 9, Tigers 10 – W: Armstrong, John (6-1); L: Sexton, Ty (1-1); S: Carlson, Parker (1)

Game One Recap & Highlights: Baseball – Texas A&M vs Auburn

Texas A&M beats Auburn in game one for their third straight win

Sometimes scores don’t really tell the whole story. Texas A&M (19-11, 4-6 SEC) took a few innings to retake the lead back from Auburn (18-11, 3-7 SEC), but solid pitching and consistent hitting put them on the right side of the scoreboard.

Nathan Dettmer got the Aggies off to a good start holding the Tigers scoreless and retiring the first six batters while striking out four of them. His pitching allowed the Aggies to take a two-run lead into the bottom of the third of a Ryan Targac single scoring Trevor Werner in the second inning. Then Brett Minnich, who’s been a hitting machine lately, knocked an RBI double in the third to score Hunter Haas.

Dettmers’ hot start hit a tragic halt at the bottom of the third. With a runner on second base and two outs, Dettmer walked a batter, then Auburn went in a mini hitting streak. Three straight singles and a double put the Tigers up 5-2.

Fortunately, those were the only runs scored by Auburn for the rest of the game as the Aggies clawed back into the lead. A home run by Jace LaViolette in the fourth and by Targac in the sixth put the Aggies within striking distance going into the seventh 5-4.

Texas A&M tied the game in the top of the seventh inning after Haas scored on a wild pitch. Werner is also starting to find his swing again, hitting a three-run home run to center field to take the lead 5-8.

The final run came ona sac fly in the top of the ninth by Targac getting Kasen Wells across the plate to push the lead to 5-9. Evan Aschenbeck, with two outs in the bottom of the ninth, struck out the last batter to close out the coin.

As a final note, even though Dettmer had a rough third inning he still pitched well and had a career high 11 strikeouts.

Final Score: Aggies 9, Tigers 5 – W: Aschenbeck, Evan (4-0); L: Bauman, Tanner (2-1)

Game two will take place on April 7th at 1pm.

Series Preview: Baseball – Texas A&M vs Auburn

Texas A&M and Auburn will start a three-game series at Plainsman Park in Alabama

The Aggies will travel to Alabama to take on the Auburn Tigers for their fourth SEC series this season. Texas A&M (18-11) and Auburn (18-10-1) essentially same the exact same overall record and mirror each other in league play at 3-6. The big difference is that Texas A&M is coming off their series win over the defending national champions, Ole Miss, and a midweek victory over Texas State. While Auburn is on a three-game losing streak dropping their last series to Florida and mid-week game against UAB.

Along with having very similar season records, the Aggies only hold a one-game edge in the series since 2013 at 15-14. However, Auburn has the recent edge over the last two years beating the Aggies in five of the last seven games. This is a major series for both teams as the Aggies will be looking to keep their momentum going while Auburn is hoping to right the ship.

Behind Enemy Lines: Texas A&M-Auburn Series Preview with Taylor Jones of Auburn Wire

In an interview with Auburn Wires’ Taylor Jones, we previewed the Aggie’s weekend road matchup vs. the Tigers.

The Texas A&M Aggies finally notched their first SEC series win against the defending National Champion Ole Miss Rebels last weekend with a little help from junior DH Ryan Targac’s game-winning home run in the final game of the series.

The Aggies will now travel to Plainsman Park in Auburn, Alabama to face the Auburn Tigers, who sit at 18-10 on the season, and 3-6 in the SEC, the same disappointing conference record as the Maroon and White. The Aggies and Tigers will start their three-game series on Thursday, April 6th at 7:00 p.m. CT, and will air on the SEC Network.

The Tigers are coming off their series loss on the road against the Florida Gators last weekend, knowing that a little home-cooking against a very up-and-down Aggie squad could be all they need to get back on track this season. The Tigers aren’t at all shy at the plate, sporting four players with .300 plus batting averages, yet the pitching staff has had its share of issues, Tommy Vail leads the team with 35 SO so far this year.

In an effort to provide you with the best preview possible for this crucial SEC series, we caught up with Taylor Jones, managing editor of Auburn Wire to provide his take on the action.

Here is the first edition this season of Behind Enemy Lines with Auburn Wire managing editor, Taylor Jones.
