Report: Shawn Stiffler hired as Notre Dame baseball coach

Like the hire?College World Series

With Link Jarrett moving within the ACC to Florida State, Notre Dame needed a new coach to build upon its College World Series berth. Less than three weeks after the end of the 2022 season, the Irish appear to have found their man. According to Matt Fortuna of The Athletic, VCU coach [autotag]Shawn Stiffler[/autotag] has been tabbed as the Irish’s next coach.

Stiffler just completed his 10th season as Rams coach, accumulating a 352-207 record during that time, including a 42-20 record in 2022. Stiffler has led the Rams to the Atlantic 10 Tournament title and the NCAA Tournament in each of the past two years and in 2015. They also won the regular-season title in 2019, and Stiffler was named the conference’ coach of the year.

During Stiffler’s tenure, the Rams produced four All-Americans, five Freshman All-Americans and 43 all-conference players. Here’s hoping that success will carry over against the arguably tougher competition that will come with this new job.

Tale of the Tape: Individual Leaders – Notre Dame vs. Massachusetts

What are your thoughts on these numbers?

Notre Dame is about to find out just how strong it is in the NCAA Tournament, and it begins against Massachusetts. Never mind that it’s an ACC team going up against the Atlantic 10 Tournament champion. Everything goes out the window it takes only one loss to end your season. The Irish might have had a better season than the previous few, but the Minutewomen will come out just as hungry to prove themselves on the biggest stage.

You could look at the above chart and interpret it a couple of ways. The Irish have lower numbers in a lot of categories either because they have greater distribution of stats among their rotation, or the Minutewomen have players who are able to carry the team to victory almost by themselves. Whatever it is, we don’t know how much it will factor into the final score of this game. All we know is only one team will be able to say it was their leaders that paved the way to victory.

All of the CFN Fearless Predictions

Fordham vs George Mason Game Preview, Atlantic 10 Tournament

Why Fordham Will Win

The Rams aren’t going to come out hand hang 85 on the board unless everything goes right, but they’re going to take plenty of threes, do a good job at guarding on the outside, and they’re going to come up with plenty of rebounds.

They do have a bit of a scoring punch – they actually did hang 85 on UMass a few days ago – and there won’t be too much of a concern with the George Mason defense that doesn’t force mistakes and hasn’t been anything special to close out the regular season.

But …

Why George Mason Will Win

The Patriots will make a ton of threes.

They might not have the defense to hold up on the inside, and they tend to lose when they have to push the offense, but they’ve hit 21 threes over the last two games and will keep on bombing away throughout.

They lost the first game to Fordham 50-47 on the road, but they were way off from outside and never got to the free throw line. With this team, though, it’s all about the threes.

Hit ten of them, and good things happen. But …

Fordham vs George Mason: What’s Going To Happen

Duh, of course teams do well when they make a whole lot of threes, but George Mason is 9-5 when it hits ten or more threes and 5-10 when it doesn’t.

Fordham has allowed just three teams to hit double-digit threes.

Notre Dame to play St. Bonaventure in 2022 Gotham Classic

Did you expect this opponent?

Notre Dame knows at least one of its nonconference opponents for the 2022-23 season, and it’s not one that was on anyone’s radar. That opponent is St. Bonaventure, which the Irish will play in the 2022 Gotham Classic at UBS Arena, the new home of the New York Islanders. It will be the Bonnies’ second straight season playing a prominent ACC program at a neutral site. This season, they lost to Virginia Tech in Charlotte, North Carolina.

The Irish are 5-2 all-time against the Bonnies, but the teams have not faced each other since a few days before Christmas in 1994, which the Irish won, 57-54. That marked the third straight season in which the teams met, and it snapped a two-game losing streak for the Irish in the series. Before that, the Irish had won all four previous meetings.

The Bonnies have a 20-8 overall record this season and have a double bye in the upcoming Atlantic 10 Tournament.
